The Immortal Brain!

Another out of context panel leaving a disturbingly gory trail along the tumblr interwebs lately, comes from this spooky story in the April 1954 issue of Mister Mystery #16, (page 5, panel 2), and if you've seen it, you've never forgotten it, and if you haven't-- you never will forget it-- guaranteed! It's bloody 'n brutal, and it will definitely give you a horrific, splitting headache just by looking at it. Overall nice, creepily concise, easy read art from "Loffredo", who, to be honest, I'm not really sure that I'm at all familiar with... the title treatment makes it look like an ACG story, but this is definitely Stanley Morse material all the way!

The Stolen Brain

From an age when brains looked more like armadillos, it's yet another revolting scientific development (aka FULL FREE PREVIEW) from HAUNTED HORROR #16! Originally presented in the May 1953 issue of Mysteries #1 --the artist is also an (Iger Shop) mystery.

The Corpse That Lived!

Science gone goofy is a popular theme in pre-code horror, and none came more goof-infused than those featured in ACG's variety of terrific terror titles. Like this wonky one from the September 1954 issue of Forbidden Worlds #33, art by Lloyd Cynwald (who?) Click HERE for another corpse currently living under the same story title in the THOIA June '08 Archive-- this time from Alex Toth!

The Corpse Who Killed

The living dead come in all shapes and sizes-- and sometimes they even come in jars! This is a weird one with a well used "brain" theme found in many pre-code horror tales, this time courtesy of Farrell Publications and from the March 1953 issue of Haunted Thrills #7.

The Brain That Wouldn't Die

Not to be confused with the cult classic B-film from 1962 of the same name, today's tale from the January 1954 issue of Web of Evil #10 makes a gloriously revolting mess of science as only pre-code horror knew how.

The Buried Brain

In case you missed the memo, we're in the middle of a "Brain Fest" here at THOIA... and here's a cool 'n creepy entry from ACG fan fave Ogden Whitney, from the Jan. '52 issue of Adventures into the Unknown #27 (actually this tale is totally brainless, but still fun.)

The Return of the Brain

I totally forgot I even had this story until I was looking around through my silver age horror comics. Sure enough, lurking there in the back of Giant-Size Werewolf #4 was the surprising reprint bonus sequel to our post from yesterday! Two issues later Russ Heath apparently bounced The Brain back for more spooky thrills and chills in the October 1951 issue of Adventures into Terror #6! Bump! Bump! Aaaaaa again!

The Brain!

As long as we have the June 1951 issue of Adventures into Terror #4 sitting in the scanner (well actually it’s my less brittle copy of the Crypt of Shadows #11 reprint), let’s take a look at a great Russ Heath classic--- The Brain! I suppose if WWII proved anything it was that insane Nazi scientists make great subject matter for pre-code horror comics. Wha-what’s that sound? Bump! Bump! Aaaaaa!
