The Hotel

Another two-page quickie, this time from the January - February 1973 issue of Weird Mystery #4, art by Jim Starlin. Another Silver Age favorite "Jim" did the artwork for the front cover of this issue, but you'll have to visit GCD to see it because I didn't wanna spoil the ending of our story! I'll have something a bit longer coming up next, I promise! Arf! Arf!

The Devil To Pay

Fans of a certain devilishly terrific Twilight Zone episode (and Charles Beaumont short story) might find today's post from the January - February 1973 issue of Weird Mystery Tales #4 of howling interest. Highlighted by some truly superb Rubeny illustrations-- even the slight twist Jack Oleck adds to the climax is nicely done. And CLICK HERE after the story!

Fire Dance

An apology awaits as I know it's been awhile since our last post, but sinister scanner issues (as well as my teenage son who's now on summer vacation and creating his own video game) have allowed me very little time on my own damn computer! But now, finally, we'll leap forward a bit into the silver age of horror comics for another weirdly mysterious tale, this time about the mother of all moths, from the June 1975 issue of Weird Mystery Tales #19, highlighted by a spooky Luiz Dominguez cover, and eerie interior art by Abe Ocampo. Today's special post is also dedicated to another ravishingly lovely moth I know ;) enjoy-- lots more on the way this summer, I promise!

The Secret of Bat Island! / Flight into Fright

I was having a conversation with someone a few months back about a story concerning a guy who drinks bat blood to halt the aging process. It was assumed this was a precode story, but alas, digging through my 70's DC horror long boxes, it seems it actually appeared in the Jan-Feb 1973 issue of Weird Mystery Tales #4 (unless of course someone knows of a precode story I'm somehow missing!), art by Bill Draut. And since this story is kind of short, I thought we'd round trip things out with another oddball yarn featuring the world's worst (or greatest?) travel agent ever, from the Oct-Nov 1974 issue of Weird Mystery Tales #14, this issue highlighted by one of my all time favorite Luiz Dominguez covers no less! So off we go-- one by air, and one by sea, pack your fangs and hop aboard for a double feature excursion into batty bluh-bluh-bluh-blood sucker terror-tory!

Final Take!

I had a request for something "monstery" from DC, and this tale from the Oct-Nov. '73 issue of Weird Mystery Tales #8 is pretty fun, --though the cliched plot of a film crew making a horror movie in a haunted house is certainly not pulling any surprises, DeZuniga's art is wonderfully creep-filled, pulling image reference from classic horror legends like Karloff, Lugosi, Lee, and Chaney.

PS: Don't forget about our ZOMBIES book give-away contest (see our last post HERE!) I think I'll extend the deadline through the weekend-- winners announced on Monday, October 27th!

Blood Moon

Post #2 in our wild 'n wooly Week of Werewolves fest, and like our last entry it's another one from DC's Weird Mystery Tales (and also written by David Michelinie), this time the Dec - Jan 1974-75 issue of Weird Mystery Tales #15. The ferociously bold line work from Rubeny is the real highlight here-- and there's the tremendous Luis Dominguez cover tease that a few of you commented on a while back when I posted a DC ad bonus that featured a smaller thumbnail version of it-- now you can see it better in all of it's full sized glory. More lycanthropes coming your way, stay tombed...

The Curse of the Fool Moon

Back in January I posted a freaky Frank Robbins vampire tale (click HERE if you missed it), and now today I have another great one illustrated by him as we kick off March 2014 with a Week of Werewolf posts! Today's terrifically illustrated howler comes from the Feb - March 1975 issue of Weird Mystery Tales Vol. 4 #16, and David Michelinie's story is a bit reminiscent of I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957) --a horror film classic that's a favorite here in Karswell's Kastle!
