Vampire's Roost

Time for one more reason to beware, and it's another Art Gates classic, this time from the May 1954 issue of Beware #9. And not to be confused with yet another Brian Barnes unlocked fetish (really Brian, vampire roosters now??!!), but this blonde blood sucker story might just leave you all with a serious case of hellacious heart burn! And how about that wonderfully silly Hollingsworth cover design? haha

The Eternal Fires!

It's always weird when I discover a story that I actually published in one of my books 10 years ago (aka DEVIL TALES) but has yet to ever be posted here at THOIA. I honestly have no idea how that happens, and happens it does. But this damned 'n doomed Dick Beck and Art Gates pair-up from the Nov. '53 issue of Adventures into the Unknown #49 is not only a good / inconsequencial example of when Mr. Karswell pulls a blog boner blunder, --it also still fits right in rather nicely with THOIA's Halfway to Halloween / Walpurgisnacht shindig happenin' in just a few days, anyway-- so whatev!

The Wail of the Werewolf

"The Wail of the Werewolf" from the May 1952 issue of Adventures into the Unknown #31, is one whale of a weird tail, er-- tale, for our latest installment of Werewolf Wednesday. It's fast-paced and fun, and totally unlike any other lycanthropy story you've ever read-- guaranteed! Art Gates delivers some decent art, though his bear-werewolf is more silly than frightening looking, and clearly Betty is drawn quite a few times from probable Hollywood starlet photo reference. But it's the sudden, added mix of dueling supernatural entities in the climax that really makes this one of the more original ACG horror adventures in my book...

The Bell Tolls Death!

Goofy lookin' host aside (I can actually think of plenty of names for "The Nameless One"), this is a wonderfully eerie tale from the July 1954 issue of Beware #10 about spooky skeleton pirates guarding their sunken sea booty vs. those who try to take it from them! THOIA art fave, Art Gates, again demonstrates just exactly how underrated he is / was...

The Spectral Bride

What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than by attending a weird wedding! And like our previous post, it too is from the August 1953 issue of Out of the Night #10, with Golden Age great, Art Gates, doing a swell job creating some fast paced, moody, midnight atmosphere. And as we plunge our doomed groom into a cemetery of horror for all eternity, here's hoping every one of you has an equally grave, errr, great holiday! Lots more from THOIA's February Freak-A-Thon throughout the rest of the month too-- stay tombed!

The Thing That Killed!

Three's a charm, as we take a look at one more woppin' Doll Man and Doll Girl monster mash, this time from the December 1952 issue of Doll Man #43, and illustrated by Art Gates. It's a musky (haha) tale of science gone horribly wrong, and one highlighted by a terrifically disgusting looking creature! And oh my stars, Doll Girl really turns up the fists in this one-- I seriously love that the sound effect of a hat being pulled down over someone's eyes is "WHAP!" Hmmm, I wonder who chose the color scheme of the Doll Plane though?

When Werewolves Die

Werewolf Wednesdays (on any given day of the week except Wednesdays) returns, with a weirdly witchy one from the September 1953 issue of Beware #5. Does anyone else know of a precode horror tale that mentions exorcisms?
