RARE BERT WHEELER MONSTER MASKS

"Studio masks are beautifully made by clever artists and finished by make-up artists. These must be seen to appreciate their quality".
- Bert Wheeler's Make Up and Mask Catalogue

Before Don Post claimed the top spot in the monster mask market, Bert Wheeler's Hollywood Magic Shop and mail order business located at 6660 Hollywood Blvd. and Las Palmas was selling a line of over-the-head latex masks inspired by Universal monsters. They had the added cachet of being designed and created by none other than makeup man, Ellis Burman, Sr., who, among his other accomplishments, had the distinction of creating Lon Chaney, Jr.'s mask of Kharis for the mummy movies of the 1940s.

Ad from Genii, The Conjuror's Magazine, still being published today.

The masks were cast and painted by hand and sold exclusively by Wheeler, whose main business was selling magic supplies. The prices ranged from $8.95 to 14.95, depending how much work was put into them. Existing examples are extremely rare and my search only came up with photographs from the catalog and various images like the one below.

There's a lengthy thread about his shop, the masks and similar paraphernalia at the Classic Horror Film Board on Tapatalk.

SELL YOUR HALLOWEEN MASK FOR CASH

Wait! Don't toss out that old Halloween mask until you've read the story below.

Woman Thrifts ‘Dirty’ Halloween Costume for $5, Sells for Over $700 on eBay
By Alice Gibbs | October 18, 2025 | Newsweek.com

Brittany Carey, a stay-at-home mom in her 30s, said she stumbled upon the mask while shopping for a Halloween costume for her daughter at a local Goodwill. A California mother’s $5 thrift store find turned into an unexpected Halloween jackpot after she unknowingly picked up a rare vintage Ghostface mask—later selling it online for more than $700.

At first, the mask didn’t look like much. “It was dirty, had several holes, and was smushed as if it had been sitting under a heavy box for months,” Carey told Newsweek. But when she picked it up and flipped it over, she spotted something that made her pause: “Fun World,” stamped underneath the chin. “That was when I knew it was something special,” she said.

After learning from a friend on Instagram about the value of vintage Ghostface masks, Carey listed hers on eBay with a starting price of just 99 cents. “I wanted it to go to someone who would treasure it,” she said.

As bids quickly climbed to $500, then $700, Carey watched the auction unfold in disbelief. “It brought me immense joy to know that I was able to bring this mask to someone who valued it,” she said. “The earnings paid for baby diapers, groceries, and medical bills.”

The History Behind the Mask
The Ghostface mask, made famous by the Scream film franchise, actually predates the 1996 movie. Originally created by Fun World in the early 1990s as part of its “Fantastic Faces” line of inexpensive Halloween masks, it was sold under names like “Weeping Ghost” or “Peanut-Eyed Ghost.”

During Scream’s production, producer Marianne Maddalena discovered one of the masks in a Halloween store and showed it to director Wes Craven, who adopted it for the killer’s look. After the film’s success, Fun World officially licensed the design as “Ghost Face,” transforming a once-generic novelty item into one of horror’s most recognizable and collectible icons. Vintage examples, particularly those produced before Scream, can now sell for hundreds of dollars among collectors.

Carey shared the discovery on Instagram, where the video has more than 1 million views, detailing how she first found the mask and the bids as they rolled in on eBay. This isn’t the first thrift find she has shared, either. “I share my experience as a stay-at-home mom trying to avoid returning to the corporate world,” she said. “I’m overwhelmed by the reaction.”

“Oh my gosh!!! Amazing,” said one commenter. While another wrote: “I could never resell, 'cause I want to keep all the good finds for myself. I would've never given away the Scream mask.”

“I would simply die if this had happened to me lol congrats,” wrote another viewer.

Others couldn’t believe that the mask had sold for such a high price. One commenter even joked: “You could have bought my face for that price.”

NOTE: The images shown here are not the mask that is mentioned in the article, they are from various eBay sellers, one who is asking $9,000!

CHARLIE GEMORA AND THE MASK OF ZUTAI!

About a dozen years ago, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Charlie Gemora's daughter, Diana, at Monsterpalooza. At the time she and Jason Barnett were collaborating on a documentary about her late father, released as CHARLIE GEMORA: UNCREDITED in 2016. Besides Diana, the film features Rick Baker, Bob Burns and Chris Walas among others. Unfortunately, after poking around a bit on the 'net I was unable to find any DVD's for sale, so I'm really glad I got mine off Jason's Kickstarter project back in the day.

I did find it on YouTube on the JB Video Show channel, so I'm taking a wild guess that the "JB" stands for Jason Barnett (see below).

Jason Barnett talks about Charlie at the 2013 Monsterpalooza, Burbank, CA.

I got to meet both Diana and Jason twice and spent about an hour or so with them, soaking up everything I could about Charlie and his career as a "monkey man" and makeup artist.

Charlie ready to "go ape".

Charles "Charlie" Gemora was born in the Philippines and came to the United States in 1922 during the civil unrest that has plagued the island and and off for many years. On the ship bound for the States, Charlie became an invaluable asset as, because of his small size, he could wiggle through the pipes and lines to repair critical equipment. Charlie landed odd jobs in Hollywood and was later hired as a sculptor and key craftsman at Universal and worked on both THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Another knack that Gemora had was his ability to sketch amazingly accurate portraits. Many times Charlie would sketch a co-workers' visage as quick as the time it took for a lunch break! Charlie contributed his artistic talents to films for many years, from the Phantom's Opera House stage to the shrunken heads in THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE. His legacy is rich in the lore of old Hollywood and the early days of special effects. Of particular interest to me was his affiliation with famed makeup artist Jack Pierce, who went on to become head of makeup for Universal.

During our visit, Diana gifted me this mask made from a sketch by Charlie of Zutai, Henri Danielle's faithful, head-hunting servant from THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE. Sadly, Diana Gemora passed away on October 15, 2023. She was a wonderful lady and I feel fortunate to have met her.

DO THE MONSTER MASK!

The latest mask from Trick or Treat Studios is Lon Chaney, Jr.'s Wolfman, sculpted by Jasper Anderson. A pretty good likeness of Chaney, but I think he's got a bit too much going on with his hair in front.

All of these can be purchased from MONSTERS IN MOTION.

These are previous releases:

Werewolf of London sculpted by Jasper Anderson.

Curse of Frankenstein sculpted by Russ Lukich.

Curse of the Werewolf sculpted by Casey Wong.
