THE POWER OF A GRUDGE

From the fallow fields of Japan's horror film industry sprung a terrifying new wave of shockers. Initiated by RINGU (THE RING) in 1998, suddenly "J-Horror" movies sprouted like shiitake mushrooms. Despite mostly negative reviews in the U.S., Japanese horror films continued to proliferate by the second wave in 2000 with THE GRUDGE franchise. Boasting over a dozen sequels, the storyline has endured through 2020 with the Sam Raimi-produced remake.

This "Timewarp" retrospective from SCIFI NOW (February, 2020) covers the history of this chilling series.

A MODERN GUIDE TO EDGAR ALLAN POE

We all know we are much in debt to Mary Shelly for what may be perhaps the greatest contribution to Gothic Horror in the 19th Century, her novel of "Frankenstein". But we must not forget another highly regarded gothic mystery and horror writer, Edgar Allen Poe. Poe's work has equally, if not surpassed Shelly's for the infusion of his work in literature and media. While "Frankenstein" has been adapted uncountable times in films, comics, toys and much more, Poe's work has had it's fair share of the same.

This article from the January, 2020 issue of SCFI NOW takes a look at Poe in the spotlight and his impact and influence on modern horror.
