THE MONSTERS OF DR. WHO

 

Since its first episode aired on the BBC sixty years ago, the science-fiction television series, Dr. Who has been loyally followed by fans all over the world. The adventures of the Time Lord aboard his time-bending contraption, TARDIS have taken him on many a' perilous journey. While the show is rooted firmly in science-fiction, that's not to say that it hasn't featured its fair share of monsters over the years, as this article from Marvel's DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE (April 1998) attests.

DR. WHO ADVENTURES FOR KIDS

It's Monday -- blecchh! Let's have a little fun, shall we? This is a magazine aimed at kids and is published by the same outfit that publishes the regular BBC DR. WHO magazine. Complete with character profiles, activities, puzzles and a comic story, DR. WHO ADVENTURES is a lively 'zine for kids. . . and for the kid in all of us. Have fun!

It not too hard to see the dismantling of male-dominated feature roles in media, including news and sports. It hasn't stopped there; complete role reversals are the norm in comics (Thor a woman?), movies and TV these days. Following in the footsteps of the Mighty Marvel, who most recently feminized the character of Capt. Marvel, the newest in a long line of the BBC's Dr. Who is now a woman.

I liked the elfin-faced Jodie Whittaker's character in the detective/mystery series BROADCHURCH, so I was familiar with her talent. She has also been a respected actress in the UK ever since her breakout film, VENUS, with the late, great Peter O' Toole. Admittedly, I have yet to see an episode with her as the new Who, but I have no doubt see is doing a capital job.

The October 20-26 issue of the UK's TV programmer, RADIO TIMES has a look at the new Dr. Who along with the TARDIS makeover.
