A MERMAID ON LAND

In the 50's and 60's it wasn't hard to find the lovely Diane Webber in any number of men's and nudist magazines. She was a sought-after model who wasn't afraid to bare it all in front of the photographer's camera. In this pictorial from BATTLE CRY (February 1964) she keeps her clothes on -- well, most of the time.

Two years earlier, Miss Webber starred in the fantasy/adventure film THE MERMAIDS OF TIBURON. She was in a few other genre films, SINTHIA, THE DEVIL'S DOLL for one, but besides being an unabashed nudist, her greatest achievement was becoming a world-class belly dancer.

Here's a lucky guy taking a swim with Diane and her mermaid friends in a clip from the movie:

TRAPPED IN A JUNGLE SNAKE PIT!

In order to satisfy their wanderlust, Dan and his wife, Edie, travel to New Guinea (!) for a vacation. Of course, they end up getting lost in the jungle and accidentally fall into a snake pit, complete with snakes. Trying desperately to escape, they are finally saved by surprise visitors.

"Save Her From The Snakes" is a typical "Man vs. Beast" story from the men's adventure magazines of the times, told in the first person. From BATTLE CRY (February, 1964).

MASTERS OF HELL!

The Black Plague was the scourge of Europe in the 1300's. While people died horribly in numbers too many to count, in Italy it was up to the Monatti, many released from prison, who did the dirty work of collecting the bodies. In the meantime, with nothing to lose, they took advantage of their situation and embarked on a rampage of plunder, rape and depravity . . . at least that's what this story from BATTLE CRY (February, 1954) suggests . . .

SIEGE OF THE KILLER APES!

The post-war "men's adventure" magazines were filled with thrilling stories, many which took place in foreign lands and dealt with duels to the death with all sorts of exotic animals. The most famous was, "Weasels Ripped My Flesh", that appeared in the September, 1956 issue of MAN'S LIFE. Today's story, written by Stan Lewis, is a tale of a photographer and his friend that meet up with an unsavory lot of Hamadryas baboons.

Incorrectly called apes in the title, baboons are actually primates of the monkey family and they are not known to be particularly aggressive towards humans. They were, however, revered by the ancient Egyptians. Anyway, it makes for a good story!

OH, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SHE CREATURE!

Although she only starred in a handful of B-movies in the 1950's, Marleine Gaile English (January 4, 1935 – December 10, 2012) made her mark as one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood at the time. Making just two genre films, THE SHE CREATURE (1956) and VOODOO WOMAN (1957), she married and retired after the latter at the age of only 21!

Also active in a modeling career, here she is a a pictorial in the men's adventure magazine, BATTLE CRY (April, 1957), complete with insipid captions.
