KRAFTWERK MEETS CALIGARI

Musical interpretations of the first feature length horror movie, DAS CABINET DES CALIGARI (THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, USA, 1920) have been numerous, including works by Giuseppe Becce (now lost), Walter Sickert, In the Nursery and ex-composer/guitarist for BE BOP DELUXE, Bill Nelson. Now, one-time member of the seminal German electronic band, Kraftwerk, Karl Bartos has thrown his beret in the ring with his own score.

After I gave it a listen, I found it to be exquisite and to be one of, if not the best I've heard. This article from ELECTRONIC SOUND (February 2024) discusses both the film and its influence on cinema, as well as Bartos talking his composition.

Karl Bartos discussing his score:

THE SOUND OF 'CASTLE' THUNDER

One of the most spectacular scenes in horror cinema history is the creation scene in James Whale's FRANKENSTEIN in 1931. Expertly filmed and skillfully cut to maximize the tension of what was to come, it was only surpassed when Whale again filmed a similar scene for the 1935 BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN.

Besides the Kenneth Strickfaden-built flashing electrical equipment in the lab, the lightning and crashing sound of thunder heard overhead where the monster would be drawn up on his slab added to the nerve-rattling sequence.

It turns out that the thunder sound effect was so effective that it was used again and again for years.

Castle Thunder: The Sound Used for Thunder in Almost Every Movie and TV Show
By Timothy Sexton |August 13, 2008

The thunder heard in this scene was used many times over in films.

How many times have you heard thunder in a movie or TV show? Bet that you did not know that nearly every single flash of lightning that results in a thunderclap is the result of a sound recorded for a movie in 1931. That movie was, aptly, the original Universal horror classic Frankenstein. This sound is known as the Castle Thunder sound effect and until around the middle of the 1980s the chances were at around 99% that a thunderclap in a movie or TV  show was the old recording. Today the sound effect is still occasionally used, but usually only by filmmakers who have an appreciation of film history. The castle thunder effect is used in contemporary movies  mainly for the purpose of a kind of inside joke; a salute to the fans out there who are aware of cinematic history as well. That is because the original record and subsequent re-recordings

The thunderous sound of this effect is really quite perfect. It is a full bodied sound that echoes with a sense of dread and suspense and instantly brings to mind a dark and stormy night with a long winding road that leads to an imposing castle. Since it was recorded for Frankenstein, Castle Thunder has been used in too many movies to even keep count. Although there is that certain sense of foreboding and horror to the sound of the Castle Thunder, you can also hear in movies  ranging from Citizen Kane to The Rescuer. Some sound men like to fiddle around with Castle Thunder by adding it into the mix. If you listen closely you may be able to hear the sound of thunder when the dam is bursting in the 1970's disaster epic Earthquake. You may also be able to hear it during the assault on the Death Star in Star Wars.

Of course, using Castle Thunder to create a unique sound by mixing it with others is more difficult to detect than the sound by itself. Have no fear because you can pretty much hear Castle Thunder any day of the week. How? Well, sit down to watch Scooby-Doo with your friends and listen closely to that thunder that precedes the opening theme song. And if you are visiting Disney World or Disneyland take a visit to the Haunted Mansion and you will hear Castle Thunder several times, including when you are in that little room where the portraits seem to stretch out. If you are lucky enough to live somewhere that has a local station that still reruns of Gilligan's Island any time there is a clap of thunder you heard the Castle Thunder sound.

PAURA IS "FEAR" IN ITALIANO

Released by Decca Records on October 1, 2021 on CD and vinyl, "Paura: A Collection of Italian Horror Sounds" is a set of mostly short pieces from the soundtracks of Eurohorror films during their heyday from the 70's and 80's. Distinctive for their moody and atmospheric melodies and ambient sounds, they remain popular, in large part due to the work of Ennio Morricone and Goblin. The title, "Paura", is the italian term for "fear".

From Decca Records:
PAURA explores the horror repertoire from the precious CAM Sugar archives taking us on a hypnotic journey into the labyrinths of fear, through the different variations that Italian horror took on from the esoteric and supernatural to the slasher films of the early 1970s; to reinterpretations of Romantic literature and gothic fiction to the splatter films of the ‘80s; and from witchcraft to metropolitan horror This is not a real “best of” but an eclectic menu full of mysterious voices, childlike lullabies, sweet melodies, obsessive music boxes, obstinate harpsichords, crazy distortions and threatening synthesizers, conceived as a succession of sequences, as if a film edit The new collection includes some of the most creative music ever written and strives to do justice not only to some of the best known composers in this genre, but also to many great unsung composers: From celebrated composers like Ennio Morricone, Riz Ortolani & Stelvio Cipriani to long-forgotten personalities who fed the industrial backbone of Italian cinema such as Daniele Patucchi, Marcelo Giombini & Berto Pisano Includes 6 previously unreleased tracks plus 3 tracks released on vinyl for the first time and 5 tracks available commercially for the first time (originally released only as a limited promo item)

LULLABY FROM THE BLACK LAGOON

Bah-Bah-Baaa! Who can forget this brassy, 3-note blast that announces the titular character in THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON whenever he appears on screen? The most famous of the Universal monster movies of the 1950's, the film was also complimented by a great soundtrack composed by Henry Mancini (!), Herman J. Salter, Herman Stein, Milton Rosen and Robert Emmett Dolan. It was Stein who wrote the signature cue for the Creature.

Back in the late 90's and early 2000's, the market exploded with a slew of monster movie soundtracks from different sources. One company in particular, Monstrous Movie Music, was responsible for releasing numerous complete lost gems from horror and science-fiction films.

CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (AND OTHER JUNGLE PICTURES) was released in 2000. It included the complete score for CFTBL, cues from the MGM Tarzan films and the score for THE ALLIGATOR PEOPLE. Makes for great listening, folks, when you're in the mood for a for a movie soundtrack.

THE SOUNDS OF ADVENTURE AND HORROR

Available for pre-order (HERE) are three soundtrack collections that set the bar. From Irwin Allen's disaster flicks to the Friday the 13th franchise, if you love the music from these films and TV shows, these new collections are as complete as I think you'll be able to find.

$74.99
Disaster Movies of Irwin Allen Soundtrack CD Collection 4 Disc Set John Williams:

Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Music, Warner Bros. Studios, Warner Music, Universal Studios, Universal Music Group and Geffen Records proudly present the DISASTER MOVIE SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION – MUSIC BY JOHN WILLIAMS, a thrilling, limited edition four disc box set containing the remastered and expanded original motion picture scores to the exciting feature films THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972) and THE TOWERING INFERNO (1974), both produced by Irwin Allen, and EARTHQUAKE (1974), produced by Mark Robson and Filmakers Group, and all composed and conducted by Academy Award-Winning composer John Williams (JAWS, STAR WARS, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK).

Prior to the deep-water predator threat of JAWS and the outer space spectacle of STAR WARS in 1977, maestro John Williams lent his sizable talents to that decade’s first half by composing breathtaking scores to the ’70s’ most prominent and epic, star-studded, force-of-nature disaster spectacles, notably THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, THE TOWERING INFERNO and EARTHQUAKE. This spellbinding collection showcases Williams’ musical mastery in deluxe fashion, featuring improved sound over previously released editions, and in the case of THE TOWERING INFERNO and EARTHQUAKE, expanded with previously unreleased material. Produced, restored, mixed and mastered by Mike Matessino, this limited edition set is comprised of four discs, spread across three separate jewel cases (one jewel for each score) - all housed in an attractive slipcase. The exclusive, in-depth liner notes are by writers Jeff Bond (POSEIDON, INFERNO) and Jon Burlingame (EARTHQUAKE) and the thrilling art direction is by Jim Titus.

THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE and THE TOWERING INFERNO scores are presented in association with the Irwin Allen estate. POSEIDON has been restored and meticulously remastered from original vault materials for improved sound over previous releases, and features a reordered program of the movie’s source music and songs, now including the hit Maureen McGovern single version of “The Morning After.” The 2-CD TOWERING INFERNO presentation is a major restoration project, sourced from 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros. WEA and Allen estate materials, and is the most comprehensive and best-sounding representation of this amazing score to date. DISC 1 showcases the original score presentation, while DISC 2 features alternates, source music, and the first official CD release of the 1974 soundtrack album master.

The EARTHQUAKE score, sourced from Universal Music Group and Universal Pictures elements, features a fully remixed and remastered presentation of the 1974 soundtrack album recording, and – for the first time – the world premiere of the original film score recording.

This composer-approved collection is limited to 5000 units and is a must-have for all film music enthusiasts. These are legendary Williams scores, preserved and presented in a most worthy fashion.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Original Television Soundtrack 4xCD:

Music by Alexander Courage, Robert Drasnin, Jerry Goldsmith, Lennie Hayton, Joseph Mullendore, Nelson Riddle, Paul Sawtell, Herman Stein and Leith Stevens

Limited Edition of 1000 Units

We proudly present VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA – ORIGINAL TELEVISION SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION: LIMITED EDITION, a deluxe 4-CD collection of original music from the classic Irwin Allen 1964-1968 sci-fi/deep ocean adventure television series!

This beloved series, an exciting whirlpool of espionage drama, spy suspense, submarine action and creature features, showcased state-of-the-art effects that would blaze a trail for Allen’s LOST IN SPACE, TIME TUNNEL and LAND OF THE GIANTS to follow in its wake. A vital part of this series’ success and timelessness are its knockout episode music scores, which prove to be some of the finest examples of the era’s orchestral television music.

Featuring music by composers Alexander Courage, Robert Drasnin, Jerry Goldsmith, Lennie Hayton, Joseph Mullendore, Nelson Riddle, Paul Sawtell, Herman Stein and Leith Stevens, this deluxe 4-CD set, limited to 1000 units, is produced by Jeff Bond and Neil S. Bulk, executive produced by Kevin Burns, executive produced for 20th Century Studios by Mike Matessino, and digitally edited and mastered by James Nelson.

Among the many musical treasures to be found within this exciting release are an expanded presentation of the "Jonah and the Whale" score by Jerry Goldsmith, as well as main and end titles Goldsmith wrote for the show, along with a bumper, and a previously undiscovered, completely different, high-energy never-used main and end title Goldsmith was asked to provide later as an alternate. The set also features scores by Alexander Courage, Leith Stevens and Nelson Riddle that incorporate Goldsmith's theme for the Seaview submarine.

Additionally found here are several versions of the popular Paul Sawtell main and end titles that were retained throughout the series, including the fourth season arrangement recorded by Leith Stevens, both the long and short, editorially-created end titles, and bumpers based on the Sawtell theme heard in the first and fourth seasons. Among the five hours of underscore much of the most familiar and often-repeated music from the series can be heard, including a number of cues written to accompany the show's early second season introduction of the Flying Sub.

Co-Producer/writer Jeff Bond takes you to the Bottom of the Sea and beyond with exclusive, in-depth liner notes that journey you through a photo-packed 40 page booklet! The mission-ready art design is by Mark Banning. This special release is a limited edition of 1000 units.
