It’s a very conflicted song, but it’s surprisingly low on angst — if anything, it comes across like a defeated shrug. There is certainly some anger in the lyrics, but it’s stifled and buried as the singer looks around, struggling to understand a culture that he barely recognizes, and openly rejects his identity and ideals. He’s trying to be fair, he’s trying not to be judgmental, but he can’t help it."

For this album the song could be considered a strong closer, but on its own it's an easy song to overlook. In fact, when I started this album I wouldn't have been able to hum it to you if asked - which is a shame because it's a lovely song. The literary references spill over to the structure of the song which is has a bookend style verse, an allusion to unrequited love because of metaphors--all very cool, plus the overlapping verse is so well done."

We get some acoustic guitar playing a bleak progression that starts with two minor chords (Em and a variation of F sharp minor). There’s also some piano and dramatic synth strings. I think the fake strings make this intro sound a little corny and overall it’s a sound from this album we’ve heard a ton of already. Lyrically, this song starts off with this character leaving a situation or a person/people that are dragging them down. Michael sings about this character walking away and how this other person or people are “drowning” while on display. The reason I think it could be “people” is because he sings “every time I've dropped by, I've tried to say ‘the water is rising.” This gives me vibes that this character could be talking about their parents. And maybe they feel like the boy in the well because they feel like getting out this metaphorical well."
