From KillianF: 28mm medieval horse and cart (20 points)

 Hello all,

As is becoming slightly standard practice, I have not completed exactly what I set out to for this week. A handful of fantasy miniatures are tantalisingly close to finishing, but I will have to save them for next week's post.

I did however finish a medieval cart from Medbury Miniatures. This is again an STL printed by me. It's a really good kit that gives loads of options for baggage. I went with relatively nodescript options, several bundles of hay, a barrel and a large bundle covered in cloth. I can then argue that anything could be under it.

The backdrop is by Jon Hodgson, downloaded from his Patreon and displayed on a standard computer monitor. Works well enough to create a scene.

I had to pull up a load of tufts as I initially placed some tall ones in the middle of the base. These got repositioned to the edge to create the impression of a verge either side of a cart track.

I painted the driver slightly brighter than I first intended. He adds colour right in the centre and prevents it from looking entirely brown.

The cart itself was sprayed Halfords Camo Brown, then drybrushed with some different brown shades up to a bone white, and then washed with AK Matte Varnish and Vallejo Game Colour Sepia and Smoky Inks.

This guy will see use in Five Leagues from the Borderlands and likely any number of medieval skirmish games that require a cart to escort, destroy or loot. It could also work as a background piece in larger battle games like Midgard. Mainly though, it's a cool model I wanted to paint for a bit of variation.

Points:
1x 28mm vehicle: 20

Total: 20 points

Thanks,

Killian

From DaveD. That’s a fine piece . Interesting to know it’s a 3d piece .the tufts at the  side have given the effect you wanted nicely .

From TomL: Modern Civilians, Overdue and Returns (75 points )

I am another long time watcher who decided to join this year. For various reasons I have painted very little the last few years so I am hoping to reverse that trend with the AHPC this year. First entry for me is at the Overdue & Returns desk.

Purchased long ago from a LAF posting for a doomed pulp project around 2010, these are 28mm  “Unarmed Civilians” originally from Akuna miniatures. Most of these sculpts are now with Crooked Dice. These are painted mostly with contrast paints except where I hated the coverage and repainted it with Foundry paints (first figure). Originally primed black, I experimented with a heavy drybrush of white as opposed to priming again with white. Not 100% sure that was a good idea for some colors but overall I am happy.

These figures have a lot of character. I think the Box guy & Mr Cargo pants are my favorite.

Having cleared this group from their long wait, I will jump on the library cart and head over to History to save the final remnants of my canceled Sudan project .  Accompanying me will be a 28 mm Bob Murch Daughters of the Empire figure (PHP-22).

For scoring, I have:

7x28mm minis = 35 points
Overdue & Returns = 20 points
Library Cart = 20 points
Total = 75 Points

 ______________________________________

It's wonderful to have you with us this year, Tom! Welcome aboard!

These are great looking civilians. I too quite like Mr. Cargo Pants and Box Boy, though The Photographer is excellent as well. I love Bob Murch's stuff and this Daughter of the Empire does no dissappoint. You've done her proud. I like the yellow sun hat and her burgundy vest. Yeah, I find Contrast Paints seem to work to their strength on small areas, or with figures that have a lot of texture, in order to allow of their 'wash' quality to do its thing, otherwise I find I'm in for a few streaky coats, hoping for the best. Nevertheless, these look the business - well done!

From ScottM: Sci-Fi Civilians (100 pts)

These are the last of my sci-fi figs from Crooked Dice. They're a wide assortment of civilians. First up is a group of robots and guys in heavy work gear.

Next two groups are some random travelers and ship crew.

Next are some mechanics.

And finally is a group of  ship officers and officials.

Scoring: 20 - 28mm foot figs = 100 points

Friday minion: Ooooh, nice work on these civvies Scott. I do like the availability of interesting civilian models and vignettes these days. I really should keep more of an eye on the Crooked Dice range as these are very nice, though they are probably a bit too slight for my purposes. I like your mix of colours here, with the mechanics having irregular gear, but the same red to bring them together.

What systems were you planning to use these for?

100 points brings you pretty close to your 500 point target :-)

From StuartL - Hell Hath No Fury - Lady Sarah's Limousine - 35 Points

And here I am again needing another ride in the Limousine. This time, I am taking a detour from the studio to head in the direction of the gift store. It's not actually all that far from the High Adventure studio, but a star like me is hardly going to walk like one of those common folks.

So, I need to pay my way and once again I'm breaking into the stash of Reaper Bones minis.

As I mentioned before, civilian NPC's are a must. In this case I have another peasant, this time armed with a rolling pin and a burning torch. Has her husband gotten drunk at the tavern again and she is off to fetch him home? Is she part of a mob going to burn down the evil lord's castle? Is she some sort of proto-anarchist? Who knows, but I wouldn't want to stand in her way.

And just for fun, I have painted a large catapult. This is again from Reaper's Bones range and while all the parts don't quite fit perfectly, it still looks pretty cool. There aren't any crew with this, I guess Reaper figured that players could use it with goblins, dwarves, gnolls or elves at their own discretion. It is pretty chunky though, the base is an old CD.

Points wise:
1x28mm mini = 5 Points
1x28mm artillery piece = 10 Points
Limo ride = 20 Points
Total = 35 Points

And nothing for my duels.

More battle-axe action and I love the catapult. We used to play with one from a Star Wars set, think it was an Ewok one.

From StuartL - Cleaning Up - Lady Sarah's Limousine - 30pts

Hi all,

So last week MartinC ended my last post telling me to 'work harder'. As he apparently needs me to do more than 3 posts per week, I have obliged and this week I have 4 posts for you. Perhaps he didn't realise that the more work I do, the more he has to do to?

Anyway, I left off at the Historical Drama stage of the studios and I have places to be. So, a quick trip in Lady Sarah's Limousine is called for.

This figure is from Reaper's Bones range of figures. One of the problems with most RPG ranges is that there are loads of Elven wizards or Half-Orc fighters, but more often than not you also need a lot of civilian NPCs. So, whenever Reaper did a kickstarter, I made sure to pick up any non-combatants on offer. This cleaner should pay for my ride over to the High Adventure part of the AHPC Studios, GmbH.

And just to add a little more diversity to this post, I also painted a campfire and its surrounding environment.

The fire, stump and log are all from, you guessed it, Reaper's Bones range. The rock is a piece of tree bark painted grey. The whole setup is mounted on an old CD. Now when the players in my D&D group get attacked in the middle of the night, we will have somewhere to stage the fight.

For scoring, the campfire set is probably about 0.001 terrain cubes, and is mainly just base colours, a quick drybrush and a wash, so I will leave it to my minion to assign a score. (Am I working hard enough now Martin?)

Scores:
1x28mm mini = 5 Points
1x Limo ride = 20 Points
1x campfire = 5 Points

And nothing for any of my duels.

Call that hard work. Also you don't have to submit loads of posts, you could group them! Lovely work on the domestic and 5pts for the cool camp fire. Also where are you going

From Barks: Lobelia fights the orcs (Fantasy)(105 points)

I've painted Lobelia Sackville-Baggins as my fee for Lady Sarah's limousine. Lobelia is a grumpy and disliked hobbit but redeems herself by standing up to Sharkey's rogues with her "umberella" in The Scouring of the Shire, aged about 100.

She gets me to the Fantasy set, where I present a dozen armoured orcs. I have many more to paint, but wanted to get this batch down.

13x 28mm figures (65 points)

Fantasy set (20 points)

Lady Sarah's Limousine (20 points)

That doesn't look like a very fair fight, Barks. There are only twelve of those poor orcs, and she has an umbrella. You should probably crack on with some more batches of orcs to even the fight up a little.

Nice work.

From JohnE - 28mm Town Crier [Babylon5] - 25 Points.

Just cruising around the Quadrant at a scorching sub-light speed. Here's a Town Cryer [sic] from Foundry. Same old bag of tricks - Scale75 ScaleColor and InstantColors. Makes a pretty good animated character for Sharp Practice and seems operatic to me, so fingers crossed.

Points Summary:

1x28mm foot @ 5 points = 5 points

Babylon5 (Outer Ring) bonus = 20 points

Total = 25 points

From DaveD

Oj yay, oh yay,,i can hear him shout from here - lets add another 25 to the tally!

from RayR - In Hoc Signo Vinces - 40pts

Or "In this sign thou shalt conquer"

In February's edition of  Wargames Illustrated Barry Hilton of League of Augsberg/Donnybrook and Warfare Miniatures fame wrote an article "In Hoc Signo Vinces" where he revisits the Battle of Aughrim in 1691. Eighty member of the Catholic clergy were killed during the battle, they were all attached to Jacobite regiments providing encouragement and fervour to the units.
He goes on to say that
"If 80 were killed it is safe to assume that as many survived the slaughter after the route began, in which casualties ran as high as 25%. Losses amongst Officers and leaders were always proportionately higher in battle and General and field Officer casualties were particularly steep at Aughrim ".
If those ran at 33%, not an unreasonable estimate, up to 250 Clerics may have been present on the battlefield, that's as many as 6 to 10 per regiment"
So I dug through my boxes of despair and found these 7 figures from various companies to represent some of the 250.

North Star (Bishop of Munster), North Star and Front Rank (with a head swap)

Redoubt, dunno?, Col Bills and Front Rank

I do already have a selection of Clergy that I've previously painted up, so I'll add these to the pile if I ever get to do the scenario. The Scenario though is actual for Beneath the Lilly Banners rules, But its easy to convert it over to Donnybrook.

Rear view!

Out of the mag, what you can expect if there are Clergy attached to a unit.
Its not gonna be fun for the Williamites!!

the 7 figures will provide me with 40 points
--------
While I do like to see a Padre at sea, I cant fathom a whole boat load o them like that!

From PeterD Home Front Lady for a Balloon Trip (5 points)

It's the last day of the challenge so I'm running the table with whatever I could finish up last night.  Next up is this lady for a Balloon ride to join up with Miles and Paul...

This is another of the lovely Bad Squiddo women of WW2 range that I picked up in January.  I've really enjoyed this figures.

I think that she could give Aunt Jane a good run in a scowl off.

Lots of subtle details on this very sensible outfit - the belt, the buttons and the satchel.

Smile and nod boys, smile and nod

This is my fourth balloon ride and 4 is 1 mod3, so no extra point here.  Just 5 for the figure.

He's back with his second of five entries for today. Great figure Peter!
