From PaulSS: Gaslands "La Troca" and a load of tires -- 25pts

More Gaslands madness this week with more additins to the Gaslands collection, you probably only need at most four or five vehicles to play thsigame, but sourcing Hot Wheels cars and then kitting them out for combat is great fun.

Victoria bought me this Hot Wheels 1950 Chevrolet 3100 lowrider "La Troca" and I wanted to do a rather simple build on this. It was kitted out with exhaust, hub spinners and hood exhaust pipes and then a massive secondary exhaust all sourced from Etsy 3D prints. I wanted it dirty off-white, so the main colour is Contrast Skeleton Horde.

Another Etsy buy was a set of ten sections of 3D printed tires/tyres, three in the form of piles, six as tire walls and the last a flaming tire fire.

One 20mm vehicle and I think 1pt each is good for the tire sections will add another 25 pts to the ongoing total.

Squirrel Duel Tally: 4 (40K Kroot, Gaslands, 12mm WW2 US, 12mm WW2 German)

Another fine looking jalopy to park in your Gaslands garage Paul.  La Took looks every bit the part.  Also really liking the tire scenic bits.

From PaulSS: A trio of Gaslands Carnage -- 50pts

The mojo was low this week, with todays deadline looming all I had added was a shipping container and made a start on the base-coat of a '32 Ford for the Gaslands collection.

Waking up yesterday morning with a head cold did little to boost my enthusiasm, but powered by hot lemon drinks I finished the Ford and then painted a Volkswagen, before, in true Gaslands style "Pushing It" and getting the Bel-Air finished before bedtime.

'32 Ford
A few weeks ago I had been visiting my daughter and her boyfriend who is also into Gaslands and he showed me some 3D prints he had picked up from Etsy. After an order of my own I was soon sticking bits on of my own.

The '32 Ford, has new wheels and hubcap spikes added as well as a door mounted machine-gun, rooftop lighting array and exhaust baffles added, the windscreen cover is made from car body repair mesh.

I painted this in mainly army surplus, US Dark Green, but with a door panels and trunk in white, what does "15137" mean? Who knows!

Baja Bug
The Hot Wheels VW "Baja Bug" really comes out of the packaging ready to play, but I still added new wheels, extended exhaust with spiked baffles and some bolt-on armour to the front.

In this instance the colour is Clear Orange, but with many panels scraped back to rusty steel.

I left the glass in the windows of the Bug, so after finishing the paintwork did those, and the headlamps and roof mounted lighting array in a non-glassy glass technique.

Bel-Air

The final car is a Bel-Air, this one was quite the build, I cut the roof off with my Dremmel and added armoured plates from Wills corrugated iron sheeting, strapped in place with some jewellery chain. The 3D printed parts added a ram at the front, new wheels, air intake, machine-gun and rack of supplies on the back. The windscreen was replaced with car body repair mesh.

I had a go at painting this one with contrast paints and the main colour of the car is Leviadon Blue, although by the time I had done dirtying it up you would hardly tell.

As I made this a cabriolet, I will need to add a driver at some future point.

The last item is a rusty shipping container I made a start on a few weeks ago when I had over-done it with the US Dark Green when painting the US armour.

We have a 60-can game on Thursday so will use these three to make up my team for the evening.

Three 20mm vehicles and a 5 point claim for the container will add 50 points to my total.

Squirrel Duel Tally: 3 (40K Kroot, Gaslands, WW2 US, WW2 German)

A fine trio of Gaslands wrecks Paul.  I love all the extra details that you put on these vehicles and the battered and chipped paintwork.  The conversion work on the Bel Air is particularly fine.  Good luck dealing with the head cold and hopefully you are fully back up to speed next week.  Oh and give 'em hell on the track this week.

From PaulSS: High Adventure - Sons of the Desert (with location catering) - 58pts

The latest blockbuster from Thomas Silverfish Productions, Sons of the Desert!

Victor Maraschino crosses the vast wastelands on his trusty mount Ol' Red to rescue Ginger from the evil clutches of "Baron" Rutherford.

Ol' Red is a Hot Wheels Land Rover Defender 90, with twin machine-guns, ram and additional armour from a Northstar Implements of Carnage set. The screen protectors are car body repair mesh.

Location catering is provided by Borgles. The food truck always on hand with a tasty bowl of Stoo for cast and crew.

The food truck is a Hot Wheels Quick Bite, the machine gun and crew from an Implements of Carnage set while the ram is an Ork power claw

Doing some revision for this post I now feel quite ancient, Moving Pictures was released in 1990.

Two 20mm vehicles and two 20mm crewmen with the location bonus should be 58 points

Squirrel Duel Tally: 2 (40K Kroot, Gaslands)

Haha! These are some great looking vehicles for Gaslands, Paul, and I quite enjoyed the location catering background banter. My favourite is the food truck. The Ork power claw, the B-17 waist-gun position and the the use of mesh in the windows is inspired. Excellent work.

From DallasE: Roadkill Garage BBQuda for Gaslands (Babylon 5)(37 points)

Presenting... the BBQuda!

There's a bit of a story behind this... one of my other enthusiasms is old cars, and TV shows about them. One of my favourites is "Roadkill Garage", broadcast on the Discovery Velocity channel. Roadkill Garage follows the misadventures of its hosts David Freiburger and Steve Dulcich as they play around fixing up old cars on the cheap, and as they put it, "doing the wrong things the right way."

They give their project cars fun names too - "Stubby Bob" the cut-down wheel-standing pickup; "General Mayhem" the clapped out big-block Dodge Charger; "Crop Duster" the beaten-up old Dodge Duster; "Vanishing Paint" the rusty Dodge Challenger (inspired by classic '70s car movie Vanishing Point); and the subject of this post: a 1968 Plymouth Barracuda called "BBQuda".

The story of BBQuda is rather sad - apparently it was a decent car owned by host Dulcich, who loaned it to a friend who intended to use it to design an engine-swap kit for the car. Unfortunately the friend lived in the way of the California wildfires... and the car burned to the ground. So in true Roadkill fashion, Freiburger and Dulcich decided to fix it back up on the cheap - low-budget fun for sure.

The project started with trying to find a suitable donor car for the BBQuda. Fortunately Hot Wheels made a "1968 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S" in metallic green and one was duly ordered from an ebay vendor in Saskatchewan.

The car arrived two days ago and I wasted no time in getting to work. First thing was to take the body off the chassis by Dremeling through the melted plastic "rivets" in time-honoured fashion.

Once the body was off I took out the glass, as the BBQuda ran without it.

I also removed the wheels and replaced them with resin "mag wheels" which look so much better.

A driver figure was placed in the car to represent Steve Dulcich, of course wearing a scary skull mask. He doesn't usually do that on the show but... artistic license was exercised. I stuck on a gas can from my spares box - it's from battlefront's 15mm Team Yankee range but I think it looks OK.

At that point the weathering really began. I painted the car body flat black with Krylon spray, followed by a coat of watered-down craft black as the finish was a bit sticky (!) - that solved it.

At that point I stippled soft Mechanicus Standard Grey in various places, and added the lighter parts in light grey. I also traced the panel lines in Nuln Oil. Lots of surface rust was also added with GW Doombull Brown and watered down Rust Effects wash.

To make the car suitable for Gaslands, I added a minigun from the excellent North Star "Implements of Carnage" sprue. Since the car body is non-magnetic, I superglued a magnet to the underside of the hood and that allowed be to magnetize the minigun for the hood top.

Here's what we started with...

Now for some gratuitous burnout pics...

I love the burnout pics... basically half of every show is just the guys doing burnout and donuts... their tire bill must be extravagant.

HOWEVER, I'm submitting this one for Babylon 5 as the Roadkill ethos is really "doing things on the cheap", as any viewer will testify. Hence using used parts, cars from junkyards, and a gas can for a fuel tank.

Points:

20mm vehicle: 15 points
20mm 1/2 figure (driver): 2 points
Planet bonus: 20 points
Total: 37 points

Thanks and have a great week everyone!

That's superb work, Dallas- worth the wait! I really like your rusty burned out weathering, and the comparison shots with the real thing demonstrate how well you have achieved this. There is, however, a noticeable lack of weaponry for survival and victory in Gaslands...

From PaulSS: Gaslands 1968 Mustang (15 points)

I've been away visiting family for a few days this past week and really was not sure if I would be able to get anything painted for this weeks slot. Fortunately I had a Hot Wheels 1968 Ford Mustang that I could do a swift job on yesterday.

It's a basic Hot Wheels model with just the addition of a roof mounted machine-gun.

I was given a demo of Gaslands back at the end of October and really got caught up in it, especially enjoying the converting and painting of the cars, I've now got way more than I'll ever need done.

With what is currently WIP I should have some bigger entries next week.

A single 1/64 vehicle is probably worth the same points as a 20mm one so should add 15 points to my total.

American Civil War Duel Totalizer: 81 foot, 2 mounted, 4 horses (504pts)

Napoleonic Duel Totalizer: 8 foot, 2 mounted (100pts)

***

Hello again Paul - what is more fun than classic cars? Why, classic cars with GUNS! That blue is very sporty, and so is that lovely MG! What a lovely beast. While the prospect of "bigger entries next week" by your standards is somewhat threatening to my brain, for now I will simply relax and allow my inner 10-year-old to enjoy this vehicle, and make "vroom! vroom!" sounds in my head on my next Zoom call. Not out loud of course. Probably.

From SamuliS: Implements of Carnage (79 points)

With a nice Christmas behind me I managed to get back to painting on Sunday with bit of an unplanned little project. We had a Gaslands game planned for this Monday and I wasn't able to find my ready vehicles after our move, so I decided to quickly paint up a few new ones that I had mostly built previously. One Idris team with a Monster truck and two Buggies with Nitrous kits and a Rutherford team with some heavier firepower and a Performance Car with improved off-road capabilities in the form of tracks.

Mostly pretty small modifications with just wheel (and track) changes and some added weaponry. The monster truck had a ram built in front to ensure smaller cars won't cause issues on the racetrack. I threw on a soldier on the back of the pickup truck to remind me of the Grenades that the car is carrying. The mini is some 20mm flexible plastic moderns mini I had picked up from some toy store.

Painting was a breeze with just a rattle can primer in the main colour followed by picking out some details and then applying rust in a few different colours using a sponge. Then a wash to highlight some panel lines and they were ready for mayhem. Decals were from old 40K chaos sheet from the 90s I think. Text from a custom decal sheet I had printed for my Alpha Legion project some years back. Unfortunately I had some silvering especially on the text decals that I just couldn't completely hide. Might have to go back and try to paint over the edge areas to blend it in better.

The first outing wasn't too successful as I came dead last and only the Idris team got to race. But boy was it fun with plenty of crashes and exploding vehicles going around. I've never had my whole team get wrecked during turn 1 before which was even more astounding considering that we all started in different corners of the map. The Monster truck ended up getting destroyed two more times after respawning twice and taking out several other vehicles on the way.

Anyways 5 vehicles in what I think is closest to 20mm scale as well as one passenger firing his weapon. By my count it should be 75 points for the vehicles and four more points for the passenger to net me another 79 points.

Nothing like an impeding game to get one's creative juices flowing. Well done on getting these great looking vehicles on the starting line Samuli! 'Gaslands' is wonderful as it serves up that wonderful blend of absolute mayhem, combined with a thin veneer of tactical acuity. Such fun.
