From RoyW: Science Fiction terrain, a spaceship, and a 28mm figure (14pts)

Mouldy orange, anyone?
Well, I think it looks like a rotten citrus fruit, even if no one else does!

This is my second post of the day (unless Ray posts this up first, then this will be my first post of the day!) and it sees another Personal Best achieved. Most total points submitted on a single day. Although the other post, today, sees the majority of the work done to earn those points, this post features the non-historic bits I've painted since my last submission date.

The terrain piece is quite obviously a DIY attempt at 'planets', for use in spaceship games. They are polystyrene balls, purchased from the haberdashery section of a local department store and painted with acrylic paints. Mounted on bamboo skewers and attached to an MDF base, all then painted in acrylics to represent Space and distant stars.

28mm cowboys illustrating the size of them there balls
Next up is another Star Trek Attack Wing repaint. The model is a Kazon Predator ship, but I've painted it to represent something else - I haven't decided what yet, so my Starfleet ships will be fighting an unknown enemy when first they meet.

The photo below shows the repainted model (to the right) and the as-bought, prepainted model (on the left).

Finally we have a 28mm Rogue Stars miniature, sold through Nick Eyre's North Star Military Figures. I've converted it somewhat, using greenstuff to alter the hair. The model will be used as an RPG character, who has an interesting taste in colourful clothing!

Points-wise;

1x 28mm figure = 5pts

1x Spaceship = 5pts (we decided to score them as 5pts each, last time)

1x Terrain piece = My suggestion is to count the planets as part of the 6" cube of terrain that also houses the trees and columns from the first of my posts today. Probably easiest, and will justify full points be issued for filling the cube. At least that is my suggestion.

So 10 points for this post, I reckon.

Over to you Ray. You're doing a grand job, so far 👍

From Ray

A second post eh????
You have been a busy boy!!
The Planets look excellent I especially like the orange one, and being home made too! A grand job, You could very well have a home made galaxy of planets soon.......now there's a Challenge!!
As for the points 10 points for the figures and 4 points for the planets!

From RoyW: Cowboys hiding amongst the palm trees (59 points)

Personal Best! This post marks the largest number of Challenge points that I have ever submitted at one time, outside of a Theme Round. Woohoo! Go me 😎
(a points grenade is what it should be labelled as, I am informed 😏 )

The miniatures hardly need explaining, they're Old West figures from a number of different 28mm manufacturers.

(top row) Artizan Designs/ Wargames Foundry/ Great Escape Games
I've based the miniature (with the sword) on a slotta-base as I want to use it as my RPG character, so the base fits with my others and helps it to visually stand out against the MDF-based NPCs.
'Roy has painted both of my eyes, they're hidden by my hat that's all!'

Sci-Fi Crate from Beast In The Broch
Terrain: the palm trees were bought as unpainted metal castings produced by Unfeasibly Miniatures. The metal trunks and the MDF bases have all been painted. Though the palm fronds are green coloured plastic (so unpainted). The stone columns/obelisks are resin, bought off eBay, painted and based by me.

As to scoring the terrain; well,  I can tell you that it wouldn't completely fill up the volume of a 6" cube. The extended tape measure is showing 6" (15cm) and the gridded cutting mat shows that the terrain bases reach the 15cm (6") mark on the other axis. But, obviously, there are gaps in the three measurements comprising the 6" cube scoring perimeters.

9x 28mm figures @ 5pts each = 45 points
1x 28mm crate thing = 1 point?
Terrain = 14 points (maybe that's too generous?)

Over to you, Minion Ray...

From Ray

I wish my Wednesday Motley Crew would stop posting terrain, its so hard to calculate the points!!!
I love the Wild West figures Roy, especially the figure first pic back row on the left. He looks like the infamous Henry McCarty!!
The palm trees look pretty cool to, I didn't know Unfeasably minis sold them??? And a very well done on breaking your points total!!

Hmm? the points.......
45 for the figures as you said...
I'll throw the crate on one of the trees and award you a total of  14 points for the palm trees and obelisks.

From RoyW: Star Trek Attack Wing - Star Trek Enterprise-era ships 13pts

This post shows some of my Star Trek Attack Wing repaints (though the white starship is actually belonging Star Wars Armada, if we're concerned with the facts).

2 NX-class ships and an unidentified (alien) craft
I plan on using the (white) spaceship as a light freighter in my games. It does still require a card base to be fabricated and coloured, to match the rest of the official ships.

Enterprise NX-01, United Earth's Starfleet
The first of the two NX-class starships, I've painted in a darker tone to represent it being the older of the sister ships. Having spent more time in space and exposed to 'weathering' from interstellar travel I've left the hull faded and the registration none too clear. The lights are also dimmer, in comparison to the other NX ship, possibly showing a difference in each ship's shift rotations and day/night hours.

Independence NX-08, United Earth's Starfleet
Independence NX-08 is a complete fabrication of my own imagination, the NX-class ships only running from zero-one through zero-seven in Star Trek fiction. Here's the blurb I wrote for the ship:

"NX-08 Independence

The last of the NX-class Warp-5 Starships, Independence was formerly a test vessel carrying out improvements and modifications at Earth spacedock. She was fully commissioned and brought into service at the end of the Earth-Romulan War, where she was used as a diplomatic cruiser and stellar cartography vessel.

Independence has the distinction of being a space trial vessel for new Starfleet equipment or procedures, meaning that command of the ship brings about it a level of non-conformity to other Starfleet vessels or United Earth institutions. As can be seen, in practice, through the crews use of trial uniforms and personal phaser weapons, added by the inclusion of several cases of Coalition Planet and Federation Interspecies Officer Exchange commissions into the ship's predominantly Human crew."

[the reference to the crew's uniform is due to my plans for playing 28mm skirmish games with miniatures sculpted wearing Star Trek: The Original Series uniforms - the ship models shown belonging to the chronologically earlier Star Trek: Enterprise.]

underside of Independence
Points-wise, I've no idea what these will score. To be honest, I'm not that concerned with the points. I just wanted to show what I've painted, then include the photos on my blog. Star Trek Attack Wing models vary in scale/size from model to model, so it isn't really possible to label them as one set thing.

From Ray

Excellent work Roy, I've always had a rather large soft spot for all things Star Trek, although I've never owned any figures for it myself, apart from some Star Trek action men when I was a kid. My little sod of a brother bit off Spock's nose, I never forgiven him!!
Great looking models though and I love the blurb on the Independence.
Now I've gotta admit I too am stumped for the points, but I'm gonna class the 2 larger ships as 28mm  infantry (although they're clearly not) and award you 5 points for each model. With the smaller earning 3 points.

Making a total of 13 points!

From RoyW: 28mm EMP Games Assortment (31 points)

My first offering to the Challenge takes the form of six 28mm miniatures from EMP Games, though painted up for the Colonel Bill's Wargames Depot trade stand (apologies, for the shameless plug!)

First off we have three 28mm Jungle Goblins

Apologies for the "Roy@Col.Bills", its there to help should my photos be published on another forum and the person doing the redistributing fails to credit me ownership.

I never got around to painting any of Games Workshop's Forest Goblins, so I quite enjoyed painting these 'Green-skinned' miniatures. Plenty of character to the sculpts, which made them a pleasure to paint.

Next up are three 28mm Toadstool men.

I did go to the lengths of researching actual toadstools for the colours, but I've since gone and deleted the files with my research so I can't label the correct identities of each painted miniature - Doh!

To be honest, I wished I'd painted the markings on the 'red cap' as stylised white circles as I'm not keen on how the paint job has turned out. But you live and learn, as they say.

The finished six miniatures, all shown together.

And a bonus photo showing two, additional, EMP Games miniatures that I painted before the Challenge commenced.

Next up for me will be my contribution to the 'Flight' bonus round, then some more EMP Games miniatures - four 28mm Pineapple Tribes miniatures.

Cheers
Roy

From Ray

Welcome to the Madhouse Roy, you're in for 3 months of craziness, I hope you know what you've volunteered for?
I'm sure Stuart will be impressed to add these little devils to his stock cabinets. While not the most colourful, I do like the grey mushroom, reminds me of my old pal Fran!
Your 6 EMP figures will give you 30 points but I'm going to add an extra point for the grey muzzy!

From RoyW - 'Paying the Piper' Figure (aka, the Curtgeld) (21 Points)

Hello everyone,

Now this may be correct, or it isn't. But I was sure I read somewhere that the anti-hero payment figure could be fictitious, I just can't seem to find the literature... One point that I do know is contrary to what the .pdf instructions state is the base - it not being "circular". This information having slipped my memory and it wasn't until I re-read the instructions after the painting was finished that I was reminded. Kurt, you will have to excuse me, I'm afraid.

Right, the figure.

28mm Wargames Foundry 'C14th Scottish' sculpt that you get free with all orders from said company. It being originally sculpted by one of the Perry twins.

Now, the character bio. (apologies in advance!)

Sir Talbot de Cheseholme is the hero of this tale;
He that publicly champions chastity, to all the fine females.
Scourge upon any man who thinks to spreadeth asunder;
Who'd swiftly take what they think, that is their right to plunder.

Though it seemeth that our knightly hero, is not quite the actual angel;
For he himself doth chaseth after ladies, he invites to feast at his great table.
It doth seemeth our spurred gallant, is truly quite the lecher;
This hypocrite chauvinist, who'd stealeth kisses from the ladies for his own pleasure.

But 'tis 'doeth as I say';
'Thou shall not doeth as I do'.
Those unfortunates who disobey him;
His sword doth swiftly runneth through!

If I do say so myself, that wasn't bad for someone who never sat an English GCSE.

The shield's hand-painted, the heraldry (like the anti-hero) fictitious.

All that's left for me now to do is package it up and ship it across the North Atlantic, at so many thousand feet through the air to North America. Hoping for it to arrive safe and sound in Canada.

Points wise; I believe the payment figure is worth 20 points.

From Curt:

Haha! Sir Talbot is spectacular (that shield is fabulous) and I must say my wife and I had great fun reading your 'blunt arrowhead prose' describing the 'do as I say, not as I do' bewhiskered warrior (worthy of a point in of itself).

Thanks very much Roy, Sir Talbot will have a welcome place in my display cabinet amongst the other antiheroes of this year's Challenge.

From RoyW - 10mm (very fashionable) Zombies, Part Two (14 Points)

Hello everyone,

To follow on from last week, here I'll present seven more bases of the 10mm Pendraken Miniatures Sci-Fi zombies (not to be confused with their Fantasy zombies, you see).

As last time they're based two to a base and on 20mm octagonals, to help differentiate them from the singular, round based survivors (when I get around to painting them).

I've been more adventurous this week, in painting more complex fashionable designs on some of the clothing, as well as attempting some 'fashion' camouflaged material.

Also, the bases have seen more grass / flower tufts in comparison to last weeks models.

Here's two shots of the Horde, so far

Five more bases to go of 'human' zombies and then six bases of undead canines. Work has begun on the lucky / unlucky survivors - six of which I've been converting using modelling putty and florist's wire - and there's a mail order near-ready to be made for more miniatures to expand the project ... And I foolishly said that it would be a one-purchase and then finished project :)

Points: Fourteen 10mm figures are worth 14 points

ps. If I say it here then it might just motivate me to finish the Curtgeld figure that's sitting on my paint desk.

From Curt:

I'm really enjoying seeing this project develop. The group basing looks excellent and I love the vibrant colours. Very, very cool.

From RoyW - 10mm (very fashionable) Zombies! (14 Points)

Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I last posted anything. The reason being, I suffered painting burnout from everything I did during December (which, incidentally, was the highest output of work I've ever achieved in such a short period of time).

Anyway, I'm back painting once again and will hopefully see out the rest of The Challenge.

The miniatures shown are all 10mm Pendraken Miniatures - Sci-Fi Zombies.

I've based them on Octagonals to help with quick-glance recognition during gaming.

The Survivors will be based singularly on round bases.

Also, to help distinguish the living from the dead, the survivors will be painted with natural skin tones and the zombies have been painted with green skin - again, to help during gameplay.

I bought enough models for twelve more bases of these and I hope to work in more fashion designs onto the clothing; Adidas, Nike, camo' patterns and imagery, etc.

If nothing else, these zombies are colourful!

Points: Fourteen 10mm foot will give me 14 points.

From Curt:

Yeah, the December/January flurry often creates painting burnout. Wait until late March - then we'll have some real paint zombies (right Tamsin? Ray? Millsy?).

These are very cool figures, Roy. Their flesh is ghoulishly wonderful. What system are you using them for? I really like the octagonal bases with the high-contrast black edging. It gives a nice 'playing piece' quality about them.

Great work.

From RoyW - 10mm Mounted Knights (4 Points)

If this post featured on any other form of social media it would be tagged like so; #NotAPointsBomb

Hello everyone ;)

May I present to you two 10mm Pendraken Miniatures mounted knights.

The bases are plastic 20mm slotted bases.

The colours and heraldry is all fictitious.

Painting the Iron cross -like design was easy. The other (red horse) was a swine!

Other than that the models were easy and a joy to paint.

With 10mm miniatures it's all about using shading washes (in this case those from Games Workshop) and then layering lighter shades over the raised areas, I'm finding. But I've only painted a handful, as of yet.

I'm now waiting for a copy of (the rules book) Lion Rampant to arrive and then I can begin work on buying in Pendraken models for some armies.

The painting area, up in the attic/loft space. Don't be fooled by all those paints (not many by most painter's selection) as the majority are never used and have, I'd imagine, probably gone dry inside the pot and need throwing out.

The two models from this post can be seen undercoated atop the piece of wood on the cutting mat. For those interested, the other miniatures are; Artizan Cowboy, Gripping Beast Dark Age, Pendraken ACW and assorted C20th for VBCW.

Back to the painting; two 10mm mounted figures should get me four points!

Great entry Roy! I love this scale and you've done a cracking job on them, especially the free hand crosses on the horses' caparisons - very nice.
I also appreciate the photo of your hobby desk. Nice, neat and bright (and I can attest to the high percentage of dry pots in my setup as well).

From RoyW - 28mm: Two Men, a Woman and a Dog (18 points)

Hello everyone, Seasons Greetings and All The Very Best for 2015!

May I present for your viewing pleasure my latest painted offerings, in 28mm.

The first miniature is by Pulp Figures, from Canada. This miniature was purchased alongside an order for the limited edition Movember Charity figure, that Bob Murch produced during November 2014. Yes, I grew a big (ginger) moustache for the event, even though my family hated it!

The second figure is produced by Ironclad Miniatures, from Wales. It is part of their Victorian Sci-Fi character range and is named "Alan Quartermain". There is two issues with the sculpt, I found. One, the gun looks very weird, featuring no firing mechanism barring the trigger. Two, the fingers cradling the rifle are too short, appearing to be only sculpted to the first knuckle. Saying all that, I still love the mini'.

The third figure is again by Ironclad Miniatures, and is again part of their Victorian Sci-Fi range. The miniature is named "Dr. Watson". This is the first figure that I've managed to paint eyebrows on, that don't look out of place!

Lastly, and I'm going to include this figure even if it is omitted from the points, is a Warlord Games hound, from their Ancient Celts range. Warlord Games are based in England, if we're being pedantic.

Points wise: three 28mil' foot figures are worth fifteen points.
As to the dog, well if it produces any points I'll gratefully receive them.

From Curt:
Lovely work Roy! I really like your smooth paint style on these miniatures. I always have soft spot for Bob Murch's characterful sculpts and this one is no exception (I love the sense of her hacking through the jungle of some undiscovered South Pacific island). I  I've not seen anything from Ironclad Miniatures before and after seeing yours I'm definitely going to have to check them out. My favourite of the batch is your Dr. Watson. As you say, the (ginger) eyebrows really work on him, good call!
