From FrederickC: Yet Another Shambling Horde of Zombies (285 points)

Just when I thought Mike W had done all his zombies, he posts another twenty. Well, I will see your twenty zombies, and raise you forty more. 😉

This is definitely my last post for the Challenge, and my last batch of zombies as well. It is a mix of 36 Wargames Factory Zombie Vixens, and 24 Zombicide Box of Zombies Set 1 Walk of the Dead.

Horde #2 out for a shamble

The Zombie Vixens come as 3 identical sprues of 12 figures of which 10 are standing, one is missing its lower legs, and the last is missing everything below the diaphragm. All the figures have separate heads and some choice of arms, so it is possible to do a fair bit of 'mix and match', although some combinations fit together better than others. The bases also come as a separate piece, but only enough for the standing figures. I had a half dozen wooden discs of the right diameter in the bits box to put the half figures on, so it all worked out in the end. The figures are finely sculpted with a variety of open wounds, with some showing exposed bones and/or skulls, all looking appropriately gruesome.

The Zombicide set consists of three figures each of eight different poses which are described as 'walkers', 'runners', or 'fatties'. They come as one piece, including the base, so no assembly required. The latter two types will add some variety to the usual slow moving undead, being faster or tougher respectively.

Once the Zombie Vixens were assembled both sets were primed flat grey using a rattle can, and then painted with Vallejo acrylics, followed by a coat of Army Painter Strong Tone Quickshade. I deliberately left the bases plain so they would look like concrete, rather than adding sand or flocking. As with my earlier Challenge submissions, the Quickshade leaves everything rather glossy, so I will hit these with some clear matt spray once it is warm enough to do it outside.

The points being claimed are as follows:

57 x 28mm figures @ 5 points each = 285 points

(I am counting the six literal half figures as half figures 😁)

And with this final submission, my 2021-2022 Painting Challenge comes to a close. Once again, a big thank you to all who left encouraging comments on my posts. They were much appreciated.

Cheers,

FrederickC

From DaveD - Well another great horde of Zombies for this challenge. a great way to finish off!

From FrederickC: A Horde of Shambling Zombies (300 points)

Now that Mike W seems to have completed his massive horde of Zombies, I think it might be safe to start working on my own horde. I am starting with two boxes of plastic Wargames Factory Zombies that I picked up at a local hobby store at least a decade ago. They have languished in the 'big box of unpainted minis' until now. These seem to have gone out of production in the interim.

Each box contained five identical sprues with enough parts to build 30 figures. Every sprue provided one figure in a lab coat, four different pairs of legs, four upper torsos, and a variety of heads. All the left arms were part of the upper torso, but the right arms were separate. This allows for some mix and match, although some combinations work better than others. I will let the pictures tell the rest.

The figures were assembled and then glued onto 1 inch fender washers. I wanted to leave the bases quite plain to look like concrete, so I used some spackling paste to create a smooth transition from the molded base to the washer. Once everything was dry and sanded, the figures were primed grey from a rattle can. They were then painted using Vallejo acrylics, followed by a coat of Army Painter Strong Tone Quickshade. Here is the end result.

The Horde, out for an evening shamble

The points being claimed are as follows:

60 x 28mm figures @ 5 points each = 300 points

While I have more Zombies lined up in the queue, it is going to be down to the wire to see if I get them completed by March 20th.

What?!  More flipping Zombies!  That's just what we need, and I'm all out terms to apply to the shambling semi-dead.

Anyway, that's an impressive horde Frederick. You've done well to get some variation into the somewhat repetitive figure selection.

From AlexS: Zombie horde (475 pts)

Hello everybody! My name is Alex and I am from Russia. I am very grateful to all of you for continuing to paint miniatures at this strange time. I am also grateful to Kurt personally for the fact that he was able to organize all this. I am pleased to look at the works that appear here and am very glad that many people are stealing better and more.
Today I present to you my little work - a horde of 100 zombies. They are collected from different kits, produced by different manufacturers. I was asked - why do I need 100 zombies? It's great to just put 100 zombies on the table ...

Many thanks again to everyone, your work inspires me.

Points:
90 zombies 28mm 450 points
10 zombie halves 28mm 25 points
total 475 points

I'm terribly sorry for missing your post earlier, Alex, but I've got round to it now!

It's always great to see your submissions, and what a great way to start off your Challenge.

475 points it is, which will put you in joint 6th place (for now).

From JohnS: Space Zombies (65 Points)

With the holidays in full swing and our house host to a variety of out of town friends and relatives, it was a challenge to sneak away and get any painting done. With everyone back at work and things falling into their usual routine I managed to polish off a small set of intergalactic undead for the Painting Challenge.

I picked these up from Tim Prow's Diehard Miniatures Kickstarter last year and I've been dying to get some paint on them. Perhaps it was my desire to get them "right", but I wound up repainting them with a few different color schemes before I was happy.

These undead astronauts started unlife in dark blue space suits with orange and white accents, a color palette I stole from the Netflix "Lost in Space" series. Unfortunately, with their bulbous helmets and dark blue colors they looked more like undead deep sea divers than wayward spacefarers. Repainting them in a classic white spacesuit made them seem more prone to wandering a derelict spacecraft or irradiated moonscape than the Marianas Trench.

I decided on an unnatural yellow/green for the flames licking out of these Infernals, and snuck the same hue into the visors of the other star zombies to give the whole gang a unified feel.

I adore these sculpts. Classic, chunky, with plenty of detail but not the baroque monstrosities that seem to be the rage from more recent ranges. They'd be perfectly at home on a Rogue Trader battlefield, but I'll be using these for the homebrew rules I've been noodling on for the last few years.

And with that I should be on the board, only an insurmountable number of points to go!

__________________________________________________________________

And now for something completely different! Unless they're French zombies, in spaaaaaaaaaaaace. I shall defer to the Snow(over)lord for a definitive ruling in the comments.

I'm quite glad John is not in the prettiest undead competition, because these fellows are right smashing. I especially like how you've managed to paint facial expressions on fellows who don't have faces. You've got a great gung ho look on that first infernal, and his made has a decidedly less optimistic mein on his skull. Your flames and visors are quite smashing, and the helmets of the suited zombies are equally nice.

That's 65 points up on the board for you, and a right phantasmical entry for the Friday Follies here at the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge, Casino, Bar and Grill.

From JamesB: New Years Zombicide (250 Points)

So for my 40 Birthday I ask my wife for the game Zombicide and I was very surprised when the next weekend after I had invited my Daughter and her boyfriend round for Sunday roast and a game of Zombicide that my wife wanted to give the game a try.

Well our first run through did not go to well and most of us died except my Wife who finished the game striding down the road blasting zombies with twin usi sub machine guns, and she was hooked. Thus started our family love for the game and we can often be found slaying together in fact the last two boxing days have seen Zombicide games with my Family my Mum and Dad and my Sister and her kids so three generations. Since our first game three years ago its been a tradition that New Years eve afternoon is spent playing Zombicide followed by a Chinese banquet. this year we have moved on to season two and Prison Break that introduces the Berserk Zombies only snag with this is I had not painted them.

Action from the New Years Eve Game

My fully painted Survivors from Season 1&2 plus the Toxin expansion
While my survivors are painted in full detail my Zombies are monochrome with just a splash of colour, Basic Zombies have been black the Toxic one I painted green so the new ones were planned as red. I enjoyed painting these but in my rush to get them on the gaming table I tried to varnish them when it was not warm enough this morning leading to a bit of clouding on them it not terminal but annoying.

Along side these Zombies I painted a pack of Zombie dogs which did not get an outing today but will be used shortly.

So over the last week I have painted 29 Zombies and 20 Zombie Dogs. Pictures were taken after our game in which we were well beaten (does not often happen), but I am sure we will perform better next time.

I recommend Zombicide to everyone its a game simple to learn and complex enough for each game to feel different. It encourages team work as if you try and go it alone you will be swamped.

Great stuff James! That sounds like a fun New Years Eve tradition you've got going there. We played through the 'Boomtown' campaign last year and enjoyed the linked missions.

I like the glossy rancid red you've used for your zombies - they look very, um... icky. I've not tried the game with the dogs yet, but I want to after seeing your pups here. I'm sure they add some challenges for the Survivors.

I'm going to give you a few more points for the Fattys and the A-Bomb as they are quite large figures. Well done James!

From BrettM - Tanks, half tracks and Zombies! (297 points)

I have had a lot of projects going on and just not the time to take pics and sit down to upload them. So here are several that I have been meaning to get up. First up the rest of my German box set Ramsch's Charge

Using the airbrush I made the camo lines a bit to fat. Then used the wrong wash I believe as this looks more dirty/brown wash as apposed to black wash I meant to use. I have gone back and forth and like it but realize its not "historically" accurate. However I think it would actually camouflage the tanks pretty well in trees etc.

Just a close up of all the commanders in the tanks and the passengers in the Half tracks.

Next up is the last of the Grimballs Beats set. The final 3 Pershing tanks

Nothing much to say about these other than damn they had some long barrels on those guns! I painted these the basic US WW2 color and added some drybrush mud around the tracks.

I thought the name Lil' Joe was appropriate for this beast of a tank compared to the Sherman. Tex..cause "everything's bigger in Texas" and Porky cause well its a big tank

Last up that has nothing to do with WW2 unless you are doing some weird world war 2 like Dust is some Kings of War Zombies.

I do enjoy painting these Zombies from Mantic. Now though I have plenty for Kings of war so it will be on to skeletons and other undead units.

 and one more pic

Point wise I have come up with the following 3 Pershing tanks =18 points 12 German vehicles = 72 points. 6 infantry in the half tracks =12 points and 39 zombies = 195 points. I did not count the commanders in the tanks as didn't know if those counted or not. Total points 297

Blimey, that is a large and varied entry. Nice work on the tanks and half tracks; the zombies look suitably gruesome.
The tank commanders do count for points, but as vehicle crew are only half points I'll just leave things "as is" and accept your points calculations. The same applies to the half-zombies! Well, it's my last tour of duty as Tuesday Minion after all.

From ChrisH - Yu Jing and a few more Z hunters (50 Points)

Well as I thought I am running out of time to paint due to work commitments. But I have a few miniatures from the Infinity universe and a couple of post modern Zed Hunters to add to the ones from before.

To be honest I have barely had time to look at the fabulous eye candy that keeps appearing let alone make a comment. I was asked to come up with more points well I think that I may be able to get to 900 but little more. Points wise 10 X 5 = 50. Just got a new phone so using it this time. Hope you all like them, I do.

Great work Chris! I quite like the purple armour of the Infinity rankers juxtaposed against the white of the heroes. Did you freehand those hexes on their bases? If so, yikes, that takes more than a bit of discipline! Also, who makes the Zombie hunters? Those are nice looking models as well.
50 more points for your final push to 900!

From SeanS - 40mm Zombies!? (56 Points)

I finished these yesterday but didn't have time to draft the post what with Field Day at school, Chinese New Year and an evening of San Soo. Happy year of the Ram/ Sheep/ Goat (depending on your bias) to every one. 恭喜发财.

Anyway, here are eight Zombies from that EMCE Zombies vs. Zombie Hunters set.

I decided not to go with the sloppy drybrush technique and went with more of a shade, mid, highlight approach. I screwed it up and some areas and partially saved it with a combination of grunge and straight black washes.

This group looks a little more pristine than the ones I did for Zombtober. I added the Tamiya Clear Red gore after the Vallejo Matt varnish and the ink I added did not dirty the blood up enough. The only other addition was those GW tufts to my regular flock and static grass on the base. I tired a few different sizes. Some glued down better than others.

Just a group shot of those done to date. Eight Zombies for today's entry, the four survivors for the last one, and the seven done during Zombtober.

We'll see if I can pull the Comedic round out of my butt.

From Curt:

That last sentence had me do the one-eyed cringe. Let's pray for you that it's a small theme round... :)

This is a lovely(?) group of huge(!) zombies Sean!. It's nice to see undead painted in defined layers as opposed to the now-common quickshade method. Also, I really like the blueish grey fleshtone you've created for them - what's your recipe for that? It looks marvelously hideous.

Great work!

From RoyW - 10mm (very fashionable) Zombies, Part Two (14 Points)

Hello everyone,

To follow on from last week, here I'll present seven more bases of the 10mm Pendraken Miniatures Sci-Fi zombies (not to be confused with their Fantasy zombies, you see).

As last time they're based two to a base and on 20mm octagonals, to help differentiate them from the singular, round based survivors (when I get around to painting them).

I've been more adventurous this week, in painting more complex fashionable designs on some of the clothing, as well as attempting some 'fashion' camouflaged material.

Also, the bases have seen more grass / flower tufts in comparison to last weeks models.

Here's two shots of the Horde, so far

Five more bases to go of 'human' zombies and then six bases of undead canines. Work has begun on the lucky / unlucky survivors - six of which I've been converting using modelling putty and florist's wire - and there's a mail order near-ready to be made for more miniatures to expand the project ... And I foolishly said that it would be a one-purchase and then finished project :)

Points: Fourteen 10mm figures are worth 14 points

ps. If I say it here then it might just motivate me to finish the Curtgeld figure that's sitting on my paint desk.

From Curt:

I'm really enjoying seeing this project develop. The group basing looks excellent and I love the vibrant colours. Very, very cool.
