From JezT - Early Samurai - 28mm From TAG (70 points)

 Hi All,

Excited to post up these 3 Samurai packs from The Assault Group which is part of my plan to be able to field a Basic Impetus rules Early Samurai army. I can already field the Later  Samurai "Age of War" period and have matched armies based on Warlord Uesugi Kenshin and the Ikko Ikki peasant league.

I have always had an idea to use some of these army figures and expand earlier and be able to field a Samurai army from the time of the Mongol invasions in 1274. Here the Samurai have very different early style armour, with no "sashimono" and still have traditional bow armed mounted troops. Of course with no arquebus.

There are 8 infantry and 3 mounted in the three TAG packs -

The Mounted Samurai are the stars -

Next the Foot Samurai

Sabot based so can use in skirmish games if I want

In Basic Impetus the Early Samurai fight as Light  Infantry

Finally some "Followers" - I painted these simply with plain black armour and white cloth and they can then mix with other figures I have from the later Ikko Ikki army, such as farmers, peasants and so on. In the Basic Impetus Early Samurai army you have 8 bases in total, 4 of which are these "Follower" Light Infantry.

Pleased to get these 3 packs done, although felt with the Samurai armour and clothing I was reaching the limits of my painting skills. They don't have any immediate Mongol opponents, but that is another long term painting project for my brother ......

So in total 70 points recorded.

Have a great week painting all! Cheers Jez

Very cool samurai Jez! This is one of the periods I've often thought about (I loved the Dixon Samurai range with the football heads that used to be advertised in Wargames Illustrated eons ago) but the delicate painting put me off... you've done a fine job with these and I'm happy to chalk up 70 points for you!

From KentG: 28mm Samurai foot (135 points)

Well even though I wanted to be working on my Barons wars figures,
I find myself painting my Japanese again, and I have to say I'm loving every
moment maybe my colors aren't historically perfect but what
the heck they will look good on the table, the figures will be used for
multiple periods so the Sashimono's aren't specific to anything.
In the last picture you will see a bannerman with a red banner,
I painted him before the challenge so he is not included in the points
but was my test figure for the clan color set.

The Ashigaru figures are some of my favorite to paint
and these lads really pop, spent way to long on them but what the heck.

Love painting the big banners, there are 2 layers of blue one of
sliver grey and 2 washes of white to create the white banner,
I know you can't see that depth but in person it's there and I'm really
pleased with the effect the writing on the banner was just a one go freehand
all or nothing, was more afraid of recking all those layers of white,
hardest part was making sure it all fitted on the banner.

the figures below are my latest samurai in civilian dress
and if I  i spent to long on the figures above oh boy did I get lost
painting these, I spent 4 hours plus on the first figure alone
the figure is 28mm from Footsore Miniatures.

the figure to the right was missing his hand holding the hilt
so i used a hand from a plastic wargames Atlantic set and a hilt
from a Fireforge Samurai set, there was another
broken figures and even one missing, I got an
email this morning from them saying replacements were on the way

These three characters are from the Perry set which i
bought two or three sets of, not quite sure why I got so many

The figure from Footsore miniatures again is probably my
favorite and I lost track on the hours spent layering his coat and
clothing

A little group shot of the team

point are pretty simple

27 x 28mm foot @5 points each = 135 pts

From Millsy:

Wow, another lovely batch of Samurai mate! I really like the palette you've chosen with flashes of colour contrasted with the earthy tones. The patterning on the fabrics is a lovely touch and really elevates these too.

Cracking work and another 135 points in the bank!

Cheers,
Millsy

From: Jez Todd - Early Samurai - TAG 25mm (20 points)

Hi All

Just a small 4 figure 25mm entry from me this week. These figures are from The Assault Group and really like the style and design. Last year built up an Impetus Ikko Ikki peasant league army and this has the option to field a Foot Light Samurai unit with longbow. Quite a powerful unit to have. The Ikko Ikki's most notable battles were in the sixteenth century and these based on the armour style these figures are really for earlier period Samurai, but I think they can fit in. When playing Impetus will use them on a light foot sabot base.

This is about at the limit of my painting skills but appreciate that, with the samurai armour, there's still plenty of scope for extra detail. So just 20 points - but pleased to get these finished.

Cheers Jez

Jezz, there's nothing wrong with just 4 figures as entry nor with your painting mate. These chaps are pretty good imho! Samurai armour is not the easiest armour to paint what with all those little frills and thingamabops everywhere so there! Your terrain is very good as well, I really appreciate it when people take time to make photos of their figures set in good terrain. 20 points will be added to your score this evening Jezz!
