From JezT: The Silver Bayonet Skirmish Characters Part 1 - 28mm (60 points)

Dear All

A new project this challenge is to paint up some skirmish figures for "The Silver Bayonet". You may have already seen some of my brother Matt's Silver Bayonet Zombie figure posts and we are basing the game in the Russian 1812 Winter campaign - I am taking on the French faction.

Not sure what it is with the Thursday crew and more snow based figures - must be having TeemuL as our minion.

Anyway here are the first 4 French characters. These are from the Perry Retreat from Moscow Cavalry pack.

Love the Dragoon with the Musket and converted the Polish figure to have a musket rather than carbine

Next up are some Revenants from North Star.

I also have some North Star individual figures - very handy as I especially want figures in winter uniforms. Am French so must have a Guard character option.

Two against One isn't fair ...

Finally got the North Star pack of Hounds.

Altogether 12 figures for 60 points - fingers crossed will be Part 2 coming up with my Officer character.

Cheers Jez

TeemuL: Excellent Jez, something new! :) Well, good old Retreat from Russia and snow bases, but from different contributor. I'm glad to have any changes. You have an interesting take to bases, clear bases, but still some basing material glued on. It might be the best of both worlds, clear base area, but it is not that visible. Great idea! In general I like your brushwork and the bases look very real. Good luck with your brotherly project! That starts to sound quite familiar, two particants working on a same project, where I have heard that before...

From RayR: The Retreat from Moscow meets The Silver Bayonet (42 points)

For my second entry of the day I've gone all silver Bayonet on ya! I've no real interest in the game Silver Bayonet, but I've been a long admirer of the figures produced for the rules, they're so full of character. So I took full advantage of the recent offer from North Star, where you could buy the figures individually, rather than the unit boxes they usually sell in.

I managed to get this unit finished in time to take some pics and post it up. Sitting them on a radiator to help them dry quicker did help!

I painted the figures at the back first, the chap back o the left was supposed to be for my Haitian project, but Haiti's too hot for him,

The figure on the left, has a greenstuff cloak added

as does the Cuirassier on the right, all the others are as they came in the post. Which is a shame, they're both really nice figures and I've hidden all that wonderful detail under a cloak!!
I'm not sure if these will become a unit of stragglers or command figures if I'm being honest, they'll probably be a bit of both in the end.

Points mean prizes and these bad boys will give me 40 points.
8 figures@ 5pts each.

Plus anything Teemu wants to give me for the conversion work ;0)

TeemuL: More winter minis, well done Ray! As before, you have found a nice recipe for snow and frost on minis. Green stuff cloaks are worth couple of points, when asked nicely. And they seem to be nice minis by themselves, it would be nice to see them next to the other parts of your army. They will add some spice to your units, that's for sure.

From RayR: Retreat From Moscow - Chasseurs a Pied (40 points)

The best laid plans of mice and men!!
I was supposed to be keeping the majority of my French army to Ney's Third Army, but.......

well you've gotta paint some Guard haven't you?
I've called these the Chasseurs a Pied, but they could be any of the Guard regiments that were in Marshal Bessiers' Imperial Guard Army of 1812.

The figures are from North Stars Muskets & Tomahawks range of figures, unfortunately they only sell 3 units. The 8 figure Guard as seen here, an 8 figure Fusiler unit and a 6 figure Voltigeur unit, all of which will be seen at a later date.

Both Lee and myself bought movement trays for our troops, we were going to add them in as an entry during the Challenge, but when Curt disallowed terrain, we both satisfied our painting urge, by painting up all our bases beforehand. So each unit you see will have its own tray, which is great for storage purposes too!

Onto the points.

8 x 25mm figures @ 5pts each = 40pts!

From TeemuL: It is nice to see two you working on this project, can't wait to see how great it will look in the end. Very neat painting, as usual, and the trays are great, too. The minis look great, they have "a bit too cold here" feeling.

From RayR: Hakuna Matata [Children's Book] (30 points)

Children’s Books: Something sweet for the kiddies, or perhaps something darker, maybe a little
Edward Gorey?

Back in the late 90's my daughter Abi was obsessed with The Lion King, she was 3 at the time,  everyday after I picked her up from nursery school, I'd ask her what video she'd like to watch while I'd make her lunch, everyday for what seemed like years she would pick Disney's The Lion King.
This is the film that I've watched the most, honestly I don't know how many times I've seen it, but its got to run into the 300+ mark, easily!
Still to this day, I can resight the script and of course sing all the songs!

Abi wasn't just interested in the Disney film, she had plates, mugs, soft toys, bed covers, bags and everything imaginable, including this book.

Which of course I read and re-read several hundred times! The book came as part of a collection, every month, we'd get 2 different Disney books delivered to our house. The Lion King is the only book we have left from back then. I'll be giving this to Abi soon after I post this, she's 30 this year and I know she's gonna love it!

The figures are all from North Star's African animal's range and are all 25mm.

Obviously they're not all the same size so I'd guess they're worth 10 point as a total?

Simba, Pumba & Timon

So 10 points for the figures
and 20 points for bonus round, making a total of 30 points.

TeemuL: All right, let's sing a song! You can start, Ray! What a fantastic entry for Children's book. I guess I have not seen Lion King, but I have heard a lot of it and I guess your view ratio nicely averages mine. The minis look like made for the movie, very nice brushwork and I like the basing, too. 10 points (28mm cavalry) seems appropriate point amount.

JezT - Library True Crime Room - (60 points)

 Dear All

Another small post to tick off a new Library Room "True Crime" for me but keeps the scoreboard ticking over. First as I am in the entrance area I have to use a Lady Sarah post to get to the back area. These are a pair of North Star figures painted up as armed and dangerous female archaeologists.

I play Bolt Action but using a 1930's Very British Civil War theme and in previous challenges posted armed village policeman and so on. Against my brother now decided we will start a new desert based setting for the same period, and thinking of an "Indian Jones meets Casablanca" type setting.  Here is the start of my force.

Using the library cart I can cross the building to the True Crime section and present "Sherlock and Watson". I know we have had some posts of these two already in the challenge and my versions are from Ironclad Miniatures. I think they have gone for the Jeremy Brett version of Sherlock and Watson as seen in the UK TV dramas in the 1980/1990's.

Anyway that should be a simple 30 points (two figures and bonus) for Lady Sarah and the same for True Crime so 60 in total.

Five rooms now completed for me ....

Happy painting all - Jez

Great work Jez, and excellent models for both Sarah's cart and for the True Crime Section.

An solid 60 pts here for you it seems.

From LeeH: Barbarians of the Icy North (Library: Overdue & Returns) (45 Points)

From LeeH: Barbarians of the Icy North (Library: Overdue & Returns) (45 Points)

The air is frigid and the ground frozen hard, but this band of barbarians seem to barely notice the cold.

I bought these models, pre-assembled as a job lot from a bring-and-buy some years ago and they have been primed, ready and waiting for painting ever since. I don't often paint plastic figures but these models from North Star deserved some attention they are now ready to join my growing fantasy/frostgrave collection of figures.

I’m also going to claim the Challenge Library “Overdues and Returns” bonus for these because not only have they rested in my pile-o-shame for at least a year, but they presumably sat in someone else's pile-o-shame before that. So these are long, loooong overdue for their coat of paint as well as being a return to an old project from Challenge Ten, way back in 2019.

5x28mm Infantry = 25 Points + 20 Bonus Points

Love this group of 'Canadians on a pub crawl' :D The cold doesn't bother them anyways..

They really look the business and will fit the genre of Frostgrave fully. I would not want to be facing off against them for sure!

Well done, and 45 pts added for you!

From DaveS: More Adventures In the Congo, and something Newly Acquired [New Acquisitions] (95 points)

So, I've painted some more of the miniatures that I got for playing Congo, although I have never actually played the game (or even read the rules for that matter), relying on the prebuilt "Expedition Packs" from North Star to decide what I should include. These are made up of the rest of the units that were unpainted from the last post, plus a few additions to units that I realised I hadn't fished out of the "Drawer being used as a shelf support".

First, we have the final 2 archers for the unit.  These were painted in an identical fashion to the others, using predominantly contrast paint.  Since severl people asked, I used GW Contrast Wildwood for the skin for all of the Natives in this post.

Next, we have another Askari that I found, to bring the total unit size to 5.

A unit of scouts.  These didn't come with spears, and led to some consternation, as I know that when I first bought these, a friend kindly donated some brass wire spears for me to complete them.  Several years later, I have no idea where these are (believe me, I looked), and so having checked the online stock, I tried my FLGS.  Who showed me to a 10'x4' display of blisters, and let me know they were in there somewhere!!!!!! (I should stress that had I ordered them from the website, they would have dug them out for me).  As the wife was in the car at the time, I declined to go through 100s of blisters, and so these have spears donated from some sprues of Ancient Celts.....

Next, we move on to what are referred to on the box as "Explorers".  These were again, painted mostly with contrast paints.  I'm probably most happy with these of all the models that I painted from this set.

Finally for now, the two characters.  Lady Isobel Poppington herself, and the Professor.

I'm not hugely happy with how Her Ladyship's glasses turned out, but I will live with it I think.  I still have some "Soldiers (Acutally Sailors)" to paint to have the complete expedition finished, but I haven't quite got them polished off yet, so they will have to wait.

As a break, and because I finally got hold of them, I have also painted some of the new GW Legion Imperialis Space Marines. Space Marine was the very first wargame I ever got bought, for christmas when I was still at school. I never played that edition, and a few years ago sold on my attempt to start collecting a force for the NetEpic version that was around online.

But since I had bought a small (honest) number of titans to use with it when this was first announced, I decided that this would break my embargo on buying new models for the challenge.  And thus I present my first 4 bases of Tactical Marines. Since 6mm is .5 points, and 10mm is 1 point per model, I propose .75 points for the 8mm that these are claimed at.  I'm also going to claim New Acquisitions for these, if I may.

So that should make

13x28mm Models at 5pts = 65 Points

20x8mm Models at .75pts = 15 Points

New Acquisition Desk = 20 Points

For a round total of 100pts

TeemuL: More warriors for Congo. The Contrast paints seem to work very well on these minis, they all look great! The Space Marines look good, too. But in the future posts, could you include more photos from different angles and the Challenge Map, please? Especially the Explorers, they do look good and I'd like to see more of them.

I understand your scoring proposal and that was discussed before the Challenge started with Minions, but in the end it was ruled that 6mm category will be known as 6-8mm category from now on, so they are only worth half a point, so total of 10 for Space Marines and 95 in total.

From Barks: Halo Jones (Manga and Graphic Novels)(25 points)

Halo Jones

The Ballad of Halo Jones was a 2000AD comic strip from 1984 to 1986 by Alan Moore, with art by Ian Gibson. Described as a "groundbreaking feminist heroine" by The Guardian, Halo is a futuristic everywoman who decides to leave her life behind to find herself in the galaxy. The epic ballad covers her trials and tribulations over decades of her life as she travels, fights, loves, and ultimately becomes a galactic hero and transcends time and space- or would have if Alan Moore hadn't characteristically had a falling out with his publishers.

The girl who got out

Halo Jones has no characteristic uniform or look beyond her short blonde hair. I made this figure from the wonderful North Star ranges.

1x 28mm (5 points)

Manga and Graphic Novels (20 points)

From Millsy: I have to admit to being a complete n00b when it comes to Halo Jones. Such a pity that a falling out consigned her to a much smaller part in the pantheon of heroines.

Really nice work and a great entry for the graphic novel section of the library. Nice one mate!

From KenR - 28mm Italian Wars Spanish Colunella (210 Points)

This is proper last minute, I got the end of challenge dates wrong so I've been slaving away to get these spanish done and I think i will just get under the finish line.

This is the full unit of 60 figs, I put up 20 last Monday so I'm claiming 40 28mm figs at 5pts each for 200 points.

Figs are from North Star.

Photos are way too dark but this is rush, I've got 10 minutes to press submit, I'll do some nicer ones for the Challenge Round Up.

Thanks to Curt again for organising and those who have followed my stuff throughout the event, those awaiting the Italian Wars Spanish, here they are !

_________________________________________________

Absolutely beautiful work, Ken. Well worth the last-minute wait as they look magnificent. Its the Italian Wars for the win (and I'm going to add a few more points for the banners, shields and insignia)!

Well done, mate.
