From Guy B: [The Oubliette] The Peacemonger [25 points]

For the oubliette, I almost literally went digging in the darkest corner of my cellar to find the oldest and most unloved model in my collection. I don't recall how I got him but I know he has a long heritage.

He's a Golden Heroes model from 1984 (!) and looks like a Captain America lookalike.

The base is marked Games Workshop 1984. WOW! He needed a little bit of scrubbing!

Here he is, the Peacemonger! Here to bring peace to the citizens of the city of Brex, by all means! He brings evildoers to his JUSTICE, bloodily! In his eyes, this includes Criminals, petty thieves, troublemakers, beggars, peaceful protesters, the woke, you name it!

Armed with the shield of righteousness and the baton of 'peace', he cracks heads to make the Brex city streets quiet! (Yes, by now, you may have gathered he's a bit of an anti-hero!)

I could have swapped this entry with the one for my Heroes (if I get that far). I've really enjoyed painting for the challenge so far but this one was a bit of a struggle. If not for the challenge, The Peacemonger would have spent many more years in the darkness. So one model with a ridiculously wide base, 25 points.

From AdamC - One last anti-hero? (15 points)

Well this is my second time writing my last entry hope this one doesn't get stolen by the net gremlins. First of all thank you to Curt for running the challenge and thank you to all of you who commented on my posts for your praise, critiques and suggestions I feel I have grown some as a painter over the last 100+ days as a results.  I hope you will all drop by at Fencing Frog to see what I am up to between now and next December.  My final subject is Robert E. Lee.

The moment I am portraying actually happened 2 to three times with variations in 1864-65.  Robert E Lee ceased a regiments colors to rally troops who were falling back and on the verge of routing.  The reaction of the troops was more or less the same on all three occasions.  They rallied, angrily told Lee that they would hold (or counter attack) but only if he got to the rear.

On at least one of these occasions brigade or division officers also took part in persuading Lee to get out of harms way.  On all three occasions Lee's intervention "saved the day" and the Army of Norther Virginia managed to hang on just a little longer.  So that is my vignette  Lee is reaching for the retreating soldiers flag while an officer tries to persuade him that this is not were an army commander should be.

Is Lee and Anti-hero?  I myself am some what torn.  Its hard to find much in his person that is not the model of 19th century masculinity.  His resignation for the US army was just that and predated Virginia's succession.  I for one can't really blame a man for thinking it his duty to defend his family and neighbours. He fought skilfully, honourably and never spared himself any hardship in the field.  In the end he didn't try to prolong a war with needless guerrilla fighting that would have done nothing but add to the body count. Indeed after the Civil War he did nothing but encourage reconciliation.  Yet there is the cause he defended which was slavery, it may not have been his personal motive but if Virginia had not had slaves his home state would never have seceded and would never have needed his defense.  Ultimately I think Lee is an anti-hero a good man defending a wicked cause.

The figures are all Blue Moon 18mm figures.  There are two mounted and one on foot.  I am guessing about 6 points for the mounted men and 3 for the infantry.  The Flag is a generic flag from War Flag.com.

Once again it has been a great pleasure taking the ride with all of you.  Drop by when you can.

From Curt:

A great final entry Adam. For me Lee is a heroic figure caught within tragic circumstance and a corrupt national policy. Like many, I've always admired both his strategic genius and his humanity - he was a man who was tasked to destroy that which he loved (the Union and his own army),  a situation that makes him a great creature of pathos, if nothing else.

It has been a delight having you part of the Challenge Adam. You completely embraced the event and have been one of its most enthusiastic participants - thank you for your participation and camaraderie.

From PaulS - Missed opportunities and Bloody Sands (90 Points)

So, we're nearing the end and weariness has started to set in. I have no idea how those of you up near the top keep up the pace, I really don't! I'm in awe. Also, terrain bits turning up in the post may have distracted this week!

Anyway, last week I painted up the figure for the anti-hero challenge, but at the last minute decided the paintjob wasn't good enough. A few gentle glazes to blend together some of the rougher transitions here he is, a little bit late and 50 points less than he would have been last Monday (damn you perfectionism!!). I present... John Constantine (on the left).

You can see in this photo that he's based on the other Curtgeld model, Spike. A bit of greenstuff later and we have the master of magic. Not always the nicest of men, but someone you want on your side if things start to go a bit pear shaped. Curt, it is up to you if you want Spike or John as your prize for this year. Or... you can have both for an extra 50 points ;)

In a different scale and a different time period, I've also finished the other 5 gladiators, which means I now have two familia for Jugula! *woo!* that is probably the first game that I have ever finished every model I own for it and had two playable forces!

Finishing off Familia Callainus we have our Retairus

Here he is with the rest of his posse from last time

And in the other, rather bloody corner we have Familia Purpura

You can see from these photos, I decided I'd had enough of the domed shields and those not quite stickers, not quite transfers, so the Purpura Velites has a larger, rectangular shield. Historical accuracy be damned... Even with these much simpler shield shapes and surfaces the transfers were still a pain in the backside. If I never have to use those transfers again I'll be a happy happy man.

I also realised I've never actually demonstrated how chunky these gladiators are, so here they are against Constantine. Beastly!

So, that is 5 40mm gladiators and 1 28mm figure for you this week.

From Curt:

Oh, no contest. 50 points is a small price to pay for both Constantine and Spike.  Consider me well and truly bribed!

Congratulations on getting all of the Jugula gladiators done. They look brilliant (and very chunky)!  Nonetheless, Constantine would TOTALLY own that Retairius without even taking his hands out of his pockets.  :)
