From RobH: A walk in the Sun (190 points)

Time flies. The month of February is the busiest month of the year for me at the office. It actually begins in mid January and ended last week. As a result I get next to nothing gaming related completed. But here goes.

1) This was a project I began on Thursday after I signed off work. Twelve Late Roman slingers, or a Saga Levy. This was 15 stages of work, completed at all hours of the day or night. From the first application of paint applied to the trousers (AV Game Color 72.037 Filthy Brown to the final stage of a coat of Mod Podge applied to provide a sealant for the Meadows of Purity Krautcover Scenics. I just wanted to see if I could push it throught in about 60 hours.

2) The second project was the completion of 10 Late Roman Cavalry.  This would be a Warlord and bannerman and a Saga Warrior Unit. This was the project that was start and go in the middle of the night during the long winter season.

3) Finally we have a walk in the sun. This was a freebie from Warlord Games showing off their French Line Infantry. I have some plastics but I prefer my mins to be metal. It had just the right amount of model work that appealed to me. Glue on a head, attach the backpack and roll. No fuss, no muss. I have never got into painting Napoleonics and I don't have a lot of knowledge of the period. This was an easy project simply because I thought, six figures and my Spanish Guerrillas needed someone to ambush. I went for a ragtag look. The greatcoat makes it an easy project.

18 25mm Infantry X 5 points = 90 points

10 25mm Cavalry x 10 points = 100 points

Total 190 Points.

Very nice work here Rob and a nice variety of historical subjects! I have a large amount of 28mm Napoleonic British and French in a box, waiting for the right moment... I suspect they will be a retirement project. Your ragtag Frenchmen do look the part though!

One-ninety for you!

From RobH - All Things Greek (165 points)

My local club has a focus this year of sharing the Saga Age of Magic night with Saga Ages of Hannibal/Alexander. I have been trying to finish some Greeks I purchased in order to play both these books as well as have another faction for Clash of Spears. Since my first posting for this years challenge I have been work on all things Greek, well almost.

1) First up is a 28mm figure of the Goddess Athena. I am not sure of the source of the figure.

2) The second offering are 12 Companian Cavalry. I had another 24 figures of the same pose based to WRG/DBX standards as part of my Ancient Greeks and that was the same fate that awaited them until I started playing SAGA.

3) I believe that this was the old Aventine Hellenistic/Carthaginian elephant before they made the switch to resin. I finished painting the elephant and howdah early last year when I first received the Greek Warband. However the 4 crewmen have sat around gathering dust. Since I put on the push for the Greeks I went to work on these 4 figures.

4) My final offering this post was a set of ruins I received last year. This is not Greek. Not sure where I ordered them from but they were a filler to help make sense to me for the shipping expense. Hard to quantify the points. Total footprint is roughly 5 inch x 3 inch x 2 inch. One figure include to show scale only.

A set of ruins for Pillage/SAGA.

12 X 25mm Campanian Cavalry @ 10 points each is 120 Points

1 Goddess. Not sure of the points but she towers above the 25mm figures. 7 points

4 x 25mm crewmen @ 5 points each for 20 points.

A set of ruins ??

Total 150?? points

Rob, excellent stuff here. Athena is cool and will be a nice deus ex machina for a magical Saga game. The Companions are quite colourful and should be great on the table. I always liked the idea of war elephants and I love that you've finished the crew.

The ruins look to me like the equivalent of three 28mm figures and I'll allow 15 points for those. Rounding up we get 165 points for your tally.

From RobH -28mm Gallic Warband (100 Points)

My first entry for the 2026 Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge are twenty Gallic Warriors. This is a unit purchase from Black Tree Design that has been sitting in my pile of lead for somehere between 15 and 20 years. The unit deals, and even the Gauls are no longer available on the BTD website.

20 Gaulic Warriors - 28mm

They are an easy addition to my SAGA Gallic Warband but are displayed here on prototype movement trays for a concept test for Infamy, Infamy. A fellow gamer here in Montreal did a 3D print of the trays for use for a Sharpe's Practice game later this month.

On New Year's Eve I discovered I had no shields for these figures, which I imagine are lost in the mists of time. I placed an order to Warlord Games for shields that I hope will work with these figures. Howvever I wanted them posted for the Challenge as I am still awaiting an order that was mailed on Dec 5th, departed the country on Dec 16th and still has not arrived in Canada.

I feel your pain on the shipping times Rob, I do. But your Gauls look great, they're very colourful and I quite like the groundwork too. Black Tree models are suitably chunky and fun to paint as well. I'd like to see the movement trays when they're done.

Looks to me like you've painted 20 28mm infantry models here which at 5 points each, equals 100 points for your tally. This one was easy for me to figure out but in future could you please indulge me and list the number and type of models, scale, and points claimed at the end of your post? Thanks!

Rob H - Wrap Up!

Thank you Curt for organizing the event and thanks to all the minions who help make it run smoothly, and finally to all the participants who made it through the winter.

I am afraid that AHPC XIII ended in late January for me.  I am happy to have succeed my goal by almost 50% . My best showing yet. Three weeks of antibiotics and a request to move after 25 years, put a damper on my grandiose plans. New housing has been secured and packing continues at a brisk speed. My miniature storage units have been dismantled and all the nicely organized boxes packed away in preparation of Der Tag.

From RobH - SAGA - Dark Age Archers - 90 Points

A second post for this week. Early last summer, I received some Gripping Beast or Victrix Plastic Miniatures, in a zip locked baggie as part of a purchase. I finally  got around to painting a Unit of Levy Archers.

In addition to the archers, I completed another two elements of pack mules, pulled from the mountain of lead.

For my final entry is a LOTR figure, but I really don't know what it is. I was unable to match it up against the current Games Workshop website.

12 x 28mm ARCHERS @ 5 Points = 60 Points

5 x 28mm PACK MULES @ 5 Points = 25 Points

1 x 28mm LOTR Mystery Figure = 5 Points

Total 90 Points

A good collection of really useful minis here Rob.  The archers look Gripping Beast to me and will serve in many Dark Age armies.  The pack mules are always useful as scenario objectives, hinderances or food source for the truly desperate.  I've no idea of the LOTR figure so will let other's debate its provenance.

From RobH - Numidian Field Force - War Elephants (100 Points)

I have been ill the last two weeks and haven't done a whole lot other than a lot of napping. This weekend I spent about 4 hours to apply the decals to my Victrix War Elephants. I would have sworn I had ordered two packs of Little Big Man Numidian Elephant transfers, but it looks like I have one Numidian and one Carthaginian. In any case the elephants are ready and the Carthaginian Elephants are obviously plunder.

My first elephant took the longest and I learnt from my errors. Somewhere along the line I lost one of the little corner square decals and caused a dogeared effect on one of the hawdah's side panels. Live and learn. Two much detail for my thick and clumsy fingers, which at times are all thumbs.

Points

12 x 28 mm crewmen @ 5 points each = 60 Points

4 x 28 War Elephants - At the discretion of Minion Miles - I started painting the elephants and the trim on the howdahs pre - AHPC, but hit a brick wall and didn't advance on the project until this weekend when I completed basing and decaling. I hope that the time spent may be worth some points.

Great looking Heffalumps Rob! I really like what I've seen of these Victrix ancient kits.  I flat out do not have the patience for 4 hours torture with transfers however nice the end effect is, and yours look very nice.  Once I figure the SSOD out I'll adjust your score to include the Elephants on the bait of "Miles said it was ok".

I wasn't sure if Elephants count as a vehicle or a mount.  In the end, I went with 10 points per Pachyderm in the full knowledge that someone will correct me and point out the error of my ways.

RobH - Saxon 1066 (50 Points)

In May 2021 I backed Bob Murch's (Pulp Figures) 1066 Saxon Kickstarter in conjunction with Crucible Crush Miniatures. I selected the Saxon Raiders Pledge. They were purchased in order to build a SAGA army. I received my rewards last October. Thanks to the glorious autumn in Montreal  I was able to prep most of the selection before the weather turned.

I do my undercoats on the balcony using a spray can.

Two units are ready, in addition to the villagers I posted last week.

Unit Number 1 - Foot Command - 5 figures

Unit Number 2 - Dane Axes - 5 figures

10 x 25mm figures @ 5 Points each = 50 Points

Minion Miles: These are some very fine figures and will make a very fine part of a SAGA warband!

RobH - A Hodgepodge of Figures (75 Points)

Today I offer a varied collection of figures. A real hodgepodge as I put it.

1) Party of Adventurers

This is a group of travelling Clerics with a Magic User accompanied by a mule train of supplies and trade goods. The mules came from my mountain of lead, while the adventurers were part of a gift of figures given to me this pass summer when I visited Nova Scotia.

2) Villagers exercising their right to vote. These three figures were part of the package of figures I was gifted on my travels. With torch and pitchfork they seem intent on removing a local bigwig.

3) Two of the 1066 peasant Women and Children figures I received as part of Bob Murch's 1066 Saxon Kickstarter in conjunction with Crucible Crush Miniatures.  I will apply the Woman and Child as Lady Sarah's Limo to take me onto my next studio location.

4) The final figure is Gollum, as offered by Harlequin Miniatures when they held the licence to produce LOTR figures.

Points Scored

11 x 25 mm Figures @ 5 Points = 55 Points

1 x Lady Sarah's Limousine Service = 20 Points

Total 75 Points

___________________________

It may be a hodgepodge of figures, but they make for a great review, Rob. I quite like the clerics with their faithful pack pony, and it's great to see some of Bob Murch's new 1066 figures getting the proper painterly treatment. I didn't know that Harlequin Miniatures had the LotR licence, so seeing their version of Gollum is a real treat. Good work!
