From JimG: Heading to Section 6—Sarah's Library Cart and Oversize Books (125 points)

This week we're starting with a ride on Sarah's Library Cart from the Entrance to Section 6. To get there we're being assisted by Olivia the Female Cleric from Reaper Bones.

Not really much to say about this miniature. She's a Reaper Bones from their second kickstarter, painted up in a pretty basic slap-chop style.

Once we've made it to Section 6, we have a project I've been working on steadily since this challenge started: Games Workshop's Battlezone Mechanicus – Ferratonic Furnace.

This thing is huge. The footprint is 12"x12" and the second level sits approximately 6" tall. The chimney pipe thing in the middle then goes up another 6" or so, though there's a lot of space underneath so I'm just counting this as fitting in 4 6"squares for 80 points total.

I've included the Votann mini I painted the other week here for scale. This thing is seriously huge.

Being a piece of terrain in the Grimdark Future, I painted this up using a variety of overbrushes and washes. In my personal headcanon the Mechanicum is not very good with maintenance, and everything is covered either in rust or a thick patina of verdigris.

I've also taken to using vinyl flooring tiles covered in various sands as basing materials for these larger 40k pieces.

I've got another Ferratonic Furnace kit that I'm currently kitbashing with a few other 40k terrain kits—hoping to have it done for the DIY section some time later in the competition.

POINTS:
28mm footsoldier = 5 points
Sarah's Library Cart = 20 points
4 6" Squares of Terrain  = 80 points
Oversize Books = 20 points
Total = 125 points

Sylvain: Your female cleric seems to convey these two message in equal measure: "I can help you", "I can kill you". Very nice work on her clothes. And the piece of scenery is very impressive and appropriately rusty, as required by any WH40k settings. Next time, please, put a little ruler beside your piece of terrain, to help with estimating the size.

Now let's see how many lives will be lost defending or storming that structure...

FromJimG: A Trio of Dwarves — Fantasy, Children's Books, and New Acquisitions (75 points)

Happy New Years all!

As the song goes, "All is quiet on New Years Day."

Today I have a trio of dwarves, all for different topics in section 1.

First up, we have the Reaper Bones model of Thain Grimthorn, the Dwarf Cleric.

My family has started working our way through the massive Frosthaven over the winter holidays, and I am tempted to paint up all the minis in the game. Thain here is an attempt to work out the simplified, moody style to match the character art on these minis.

Basically this is just a simple slap-chop with contrast paints. I'm not sure whether I like the style or not. Particularly, I'm not sure how to get enough contrast in the face.

Moving on. I have a second Dwarf in a chibi style from CMON's Arcadia Quest.

What's nice about painting chibi minis is that they have exaggerated features which makes it easier to paint their faces. I tend to work with NMM for chibis since they are already in such a comic style.

I painted this guy up like slayer from the Old World. That might make "Children's Books" a bit of a stretch, if you know the lore; but his big baby art style just screamed kiddos to me. Hopefully it fits close enough!

Finally, my last offering of the week is for New Acquisitions: a Hearthkyn Theyn from the Leagues of Votann. I've been painting them up in a cyberpunk style with glowing green accents.

The Leagues of Votann (aka Squats 2.0) are the newest faction to Warhammer 40k. And the Hearthkyn Salvagers is an even more recent addition to the Kill Team line up. I picked these guys up in late October.

In November I painted up an entire Kill Team for a local convention. Unfortunately, I realized that I needed more flexibility than the models I had originally assembled. So that's where this most recent space dorf comes in—hopefully she'll give me some advantage on more open boards.

Again, happy New Years to all of you and yours!

Not two (or three?) dwarves are the same. and your submission is a brilliant demonstration of how different they can be, while still being called "dwarves". I like how you accentuated the unique personae of each figurine with its "natural" background. The zenithal highlights are well done and bring out lots of details and texture. Scoring 60 additional points with 3 sections of the library gives you lots of bang for your gang. Well planned!

From JimG: Ork Trukk, Overdues and Returns (50 points)

Hey there! Long time listener; first-time caller.

My first post for the challenge is one of the most long suffering models in my backlog: the humble Ork Trukk. I've had this kit for at least 8 years.

I haven't played a game yet of 10th Edition, but here we are with a model so coveted in the current meta that you can't find them online. Clearly, painting this thing is far overdue.

There are plenty more Orks to paint in the backlog that will involve significant kitbashing, so I decided this one should stay basic. I've swapped the heads out on driver and gunner, but otherwise everything is stock.

As a former librarian and current professor, I definitely dig the whole library challenge this year. Who knows, I might even find an orangutan in my pile to paint up...

POINTS:

28mm Vehicle = 20 points
Overdues and Returns = 20 points
Total = 40 points

Welcome to the Challenge Jim!

Your opening entry is a doozy! What a magnificently shambolic Ork Trukk. There is so much to like with this model, especially your work on all the various details and the overall weathering. I'm also quite impressed with your apocalyptic backdrop and photography - it really sets the scene for the vehicle and its loonatic crew.

I'm going to give you a few extra points for the driver, gunner and sheer size of the model.

Terrific work!
