From MarkG: WW2 Naval ships (72 points)

While my main project of painting up units for the Russian Civil War continues, as a side project I’ve been painting 1/1800 scale naval forces for WW2. I recently purchased “Nimitz,” the excellent set of naval rules from Sam Mustafa, which has motivated to start these. It also helps with motivation to occasionally take a break, and work on another theme, such as these.

Full compliment: Kriegsmarine on the left, RN on the right

These are all 3d prints that I made at home on my filament printer. The sheer amount of either free, or cheap, STL files on the web means I’ve been amassing files for pretty much any engagement I find interesting (many from Ghukek's Miniatures); thus, I have a big bag of further goodies for the Royal Navy, Kriegsmarine, Regina Marina, US Navy, and Japanese Navy still to paint.

HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales

Given that nearly each of the ships require a base with slightly different dimensions, I decided to use balsa wood. For the sea effects I followed Ken Reilly’s (Yarkshire Gamer) tutorial on the ‘U-Tubes.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQMlywFOoeg). I temporarily painted on the names, as I still have to print up ship labels.

Bismarck

For my first outing I’ve concentrated on the War in the Atlantic, with the key ships for the Battle of Denmark Straight, and the Battle of the River Plate. Who hasn't seen the film "Sink the Bismarck" and then wanted to wargame it. I threw in the Scharnhorst as well for some fictional encounters between the RN and Kriegsmarine. I’ll add a few more ships for this theatre in coming posts, such as HMS Cumberland, and HMS Rodney.

Prince Eugene and Scharnhorst

Further on I want to focus on the Mediterranean battles, and eventually early war encounters in the Pacific, such as the Java Sea battles.

Graf Spee

For scoring, I found an entry from the 2023 competition, where Battleships and Cruisers were scored similarly to the effort involved with a 15mm vehicle, so 8 points each (if that is acceptable).

HMS Achilles, HMS Ajax, and HMS Exeter

Normal service with more RCW figures will resume next week.

HMS Hood

The points summary:

9 x 8 = 72 points for nine 1/1800 scale Battleships and Cruisers.

Goodday Mark, what a great renditions of these classic Warships! Believe it or not but when I was a lad I did read a lot of books about WW2 and some of these ships featured amongst their pages HMS Prince of Wales and Hood amongst them. So it's a joy to see them get this kind of high level attention from you! Not only have you done a sterling job on painting the vessels themselves, the bases are top notch to!

From AdamC: German Destroyer and Torpedo Boat (4 Points)

With the Flue hitting my home hard I have only small entry this week.  A pair of German ships 1/2400 Scale form GHQ.

First up a Z1 Class German Destroy.  The Z1s were big destroyers mean to counter the large French and Polish destroyers of the late 20s and 30s.  Unfortunately for the Germans there were issues that came from a lack of practical experience among German ship designers/builders.
These ships had too much capability crammed into too little hull. Sea keeping was poor (one commentator indicated they had distressing habit of plunging bow first as if  trying to join the U-boat arm).  Three out of the four were lost in 1940 the last one eventually being surrendered to the British.
I also have a Type 23 torpedo boat also called a Mowen (Seagull) class  Theses are small ships built under the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty.
Six were built in total and despite being older designs they saw a good deal of fighting.  All six were lost during the war.  I am not sure if Baltic Camo pattern is appropriate for Destroyers and Torpedo Boats but I like how it looks and use it for all my Kriegsmarine ships.

Two 1/2400 Scale ships is 4 points

Sylvain: Great looking little ships. Destroyers make naval games fun. It's a great idea to use transparent bases. Bravo!

(Tuesday - Ready) Anthony O - Last throw of the dice - German soldiers and sailors - 80 Points

Well this is my last entry and I must admit I ran out of steam with two weeks to go. This will put me over 2000 points and for the most part I really powered through but painting fatigue got me in the end and I have been taking a break with some well deserved time wasting on a computer game.

These guys are the German Kriegsmarine from Warlord Games and the 'Raus' blister pack with a Warlord Games Panther Coelian to demonstrate just how dynamic they are.

I have had a ball and I really appreciate the positive nature of this community, I will definitely be back!

Alan and Paul: Patch, I know we say this every week, but it has been a real treat to see the magnificent figures you have been churning out at such an alarming rate. I'm glad you have had such a positive experience of the Challenge. I'm also glad Paul isn't editing this post, as one glance at those Kriegsmarine would inspire him to get straight on the phone to War & Peace Games and start another project. I hadn't seen those 'Raus' figures before, and they are indeed a great set of dynamic and very believable poses. The Tuesday Minions salute you Sir! The camo on those Panzergrenadiers earns you a bonus five points.

WEDNESDAY from RichardP - WWII Kriegsmarine (116 points)

A 20mm Platoon of WWII German Kriegsmarine for Chain of Command. Figures are Kelly Heroes from Grubby Tanks (Britannia Miniatures).

Each of the three sections consist of:-

Junior Leader
Rifle Squad - 4 Riflemen
MG Squad - MG34 Team (2 Figures) + 2 Riflemen

Commanded by a Senior Leader.

This will be the first unit of my 2017 WWII Chain of Command project. I have painted them a bit bluer than they probably should be and have started to paint all my figures a bit brighter than usual as I like the way they look on the tabletop.

ByronM: A very good points score for the day at 116 points!  The blue may be a bit bright but I think it works and will really make them stand out on the table, especially with the white accents.  I hope they serve you well in CoC, and I look forward to seeing more of your CoC project.
