From GrahameH - More 15mm Cold War Battlegroups (746 points)

In a previous post I showed my US Cold War Battlegroup (BG) which I had finished and was then hoping to get some other non-completed NATO BGs completed without getting distracted. So in order to give myself a little encouragement I listened to the "Team Yankee" book. All was going well until they described the attempt by a US Armoured Cavalry Squadron to act as a speed bump in the face of the Warsaw Pact armoured advance. Spoiler - it didn't go very well for the US. Then the troubled started. "I'd like a Armoured Cavalry Squadron" I said even though it not on my list to do. However, I summoned up all my will power to keep to my original plan, failed and here it is.

Its not to big as I left out the artillery battery as it the same as the other US BG. The figures etc are all 15mm Battlefront.

The HQ - MG, Stinger, CO and a M113 (20pts)

Armoured Cavalry Troop

There are 2 of these each consisting of 8 men and a M113 ACAV. (24pts x 2 = 48pts)

Support

M113 ACAV for the Recce Unit and 1 M106 with a 120mm mortar. (16pts and 4 for the mortar crew (20pts)

Two Armoured Cavalry Tank Troops (Each of 2 M60s) (32pts)

So the US Armoured Cavalry Squadron = 120pts

Then I thought I wonder if I could add a US Air Assault BG. I have a Russian one and a British one.

Never really sticking to a painting plan due to my butterfly issues, here is my US Air Assault BG.

A A10 Warthog, a AH-1 Cobra and 2 Chinooks (32pts) (the Cobra is Battlefront, the Chinooks are 3D printed and I have no idea where the A10 came from.

The Ground Forces

HQ and the 3 Infantry Companies

This was before the entry of the Humvees so most of the transport is Mutt 151 jeeps (From Army Bits)

(2 vehicles and 34 figures, including crew for the jeeps) = 84pts

Support Company - M151 with TOW (2 vehicles and 6 crew) = 28pts

Recce Platoon - M151 and 7 figures (22 pts)

Airborne Tank Sqn - 3 X M551 Sheridans (Army Bits). Apparently the 82nd kept their Sheridans during this time period. (24Pts)

The Artillery Battery (2 Guns, 3Vehicles and 12 figures) = 56pts (all Army Bits who make some wonderful US Infantry) I think the guns are a bit late for 1984 but they will do.

So that the US Airborne BG at 246 Pts.

Right back to the Plan

West German BG

West German BG (most of the infantry was already painted so just the vehicles)

HQ and two Sqns of Leopards (7 vehicles) 56pts - Battlefront

Leopard Recovery Vehicle (8pts) (Army Bits)

4 Marder 1s for the HQ, if not an armoured BG and three Infantry Coys (Battlefront) (32pts)

Second Part of the West German BG.

The Artillery Battery - 2 X M109s and a M113 FO (Battlefront) (24pts)

Support Company - 2 M113 (for the Milan Teams) and a M106 with 120mm Mortar - 2 crew. (28pts)

AA Platoon - a Roland (this was suppose to be a Gepard, but that model has been drafted into the Dutch BG) (8pts)

Recce Plt - a Luchs (8pts)

Any then the Butterfly Syndrome hit again 😒

West German Fallschirmjager BG

AT Company - 2 Wiesels with TOW and 2 with 20mm *Butler 3d printing) (32pts)

Pts = 112pts

I need 5 KraKa transport for this unit. These are little go-kart things but I can't find any in 15mm. Anyone know of anyone who produces these please let me know?

So the Grand Total

61 Vehicles

123 Figures

3 Served Guns

Grand Total = 746

***

Did the Painting Challenge start much earlier than I realized? On days like this, it seems so, as with today's posts, Grahame has surpassed what most Challengers manage in an entire AHPC.

However it happens, that is another 746 points.

From DougM - Lightning Elephants- Corsucant (sic) - (76 Points)

Not exactly a points bomb, and I am sure no surprise after my 1/200 Japanese WW2 aircraft...  this very versatile hex mat is no longer Kent, it is in fact, paddy fields on Asian islands.

So first some Army Lightnings. The hard part was finding ways to make a very dull colour scheme a little bit interesting.

And the Navy is here... F4F Wildcats. As usual, I didn't make them for a particular squadron, but kept them generic.

Finally, you know when you think an 'army' is finished, and you spot something? Well, it doesn't come much more 'Imperial' conflict than the Indian Mutiny, and who could resist a splendid (and very well priced) AW Miniatures Elephant drawn limber? I think this will be my Deployment Point for Sharp Practice.

That's my 'Imperial' for Coruscant planet bonus, making a total of:

12 x 10mm 'vehicles' @3 each = 36
1 x 28mm 'vehicle' @20 = 20
Planet Bonus = 20 for a total of 76 points.

Hopefully more to come this week...

And Squirrels..  now up to 10 I think.

  • 1/200 WW2 Japanese Aircraft
  • 1/200 WW2 US Aircraft
  • 1/200 WW2 British Aircraft
  • 1/200 WW2 German Aircraft
  • 1/144 WW1 British Aircraft (not quite enough for WW1 German Aircraft (doh!))
  • 28mm German Armour
  • 28mm 12th SS Panzer infantry
  • 28mm Indian Mutiny Sepoys
  • 28mm Dr Who
  • 28mm Austrian Napoleonics
I was curious about the content of this post based on the title.  I was kind of expecting Incendiary Pigs or some other Anti-elephant ploy that used to exist on the WRG army lists.  However I am well satisfied with what you've presented Doug.  Love the aircraft and that Elephant is just the bees' knees.  Really good work on the saddle blanket and mahout.

From JamesM: Participant Prize for DaveD (71pts)

Hi Folks,

Off to a slow start this year (I blame a number of causes, but mainly buying Pathfinder: Kingmaker for cheap in the Steam winter sale...), but I had asked His Curtness for permission to paint my challenge entry fee specifically for DaveD.

As such, I present a small diorama from 'somewhere in Normandy'. This consists of a GMC CCKW Radio truck, complete with generator trailer, along with a couple of Jeeps and a map table.

The truck and jeeps are 15mm Skytrex models purchased specifically with this idea in mind, while the figures are all Battlefront 15mm metal figures which came from a stash I was holding for DaveD anyway. I had planned to use Skytrex infantry figures, but they were too small compared to the table.

As usual, I tried to arrange the figures so that a bit of a story was being told. This story is 'look, a map!'. In all seriousness, commanders discuss routes for an armoured advance through the bocage while a recce team reports back and a runner in a jeep awaits orders. It should be noted that this truck based radio was also capable of communicating with the UK, and was frequently used by war correspondents and the like to send messages back!

Decals were limited to what few US ones I had (for some M10's) - and the Battlefront 15mm decals seem to be closer to 20mm in size. Still, I'm sure Dave can update if required.

Final tally is:

6 x 15mm figures standing/sitting = 12 points
2 x 15mm figures in jeep = 2 points?
4 x 15mm vehicles = 32 points

= 46 points

James, this is amazing. I am blessed to be able to play with your toys and Dave will love it. By the way GMC CCKW is the worst scrabble hand possible. As it's the entry fee you are short on the points

From FranL - Near Future/Sci-Fi US Force (124 Points)

This before you is the future of US forces in our near future (maybe not that near) to defend against alien incursions or to take the fight to the stars maybe..........

15mm figures from White Dragon Miniatures, GZG and Khurasan Miniatures.

Recon Mechs......

Standard infantry.....

Heavy Mech, SEAL Team and Synthetics.......

Heavy Assault Infantry.....

Synthetics are the future........

Casualties........

The force is made up of 44 figures plus 4 Recon Mechs plus 1 Heavy Mech.

More near future sci-fi loveliness. None of that frilly lace and sheep were getting from the Donnybrook Kid... It has to be said your painting output is prodigious, but as a Mud Farmer I guess you have a lot of time on your hands at this time of year? Seriously though I really like these, particularly the Mechs.

I can only count 42 infantry (unless you have crew inside the Heavy Mech!?) so they'll get you 84 points. The four Recon Mechs looks to be about the equivalent of 28mm infantry so I'll award five apiece, so 20 in total for these. Now the Heavy Mech is a monster of a vehicle. I'll start with base points for a 15mm vehicle which is 8 but award another 8 bonus points for its sheer size. That brings the total up to 120 points.

UPDATE: Fran kindly pointed out the two missing infantrymen I couldn't find (hiding, bold as brass in that last photo!!), so I've added another 4 points for these.
