From Mike W: Warlord Epic 15mm Numidians & Celts, plus some others! (185 Points)

So this last week has been really disappointing in terms of free time that I could put towards painting for the challenge, with real life again throwing up unexpected obsticles to resolve! Who said being retired was easy, with nothing else to do except your hobbies, everyone seems to believe that you're the guy who can do everything at the drop of the hat! 😀

That said I have concentrated on trying to break the back of my 15mm Carthaginian army, with Light Infantry and Horse all lurching towards completion.

The bulk of this week's submission is focused on the Carthaginian's allied Numidian and Celtic forces, with the foot all being depicted as Light Infantry. I have noticed that Warlord Games do a close formation Celtic frame, so I'll be looking to acquire one of these in the near future - plus some elephants of course!

Anyway on to this week's figures, first the Numidians:

The Numidian contingent, Horse, Javelin men and Archers.

A close-up on the horse, 2 bases each of 5 men, all armed with Javelins
and their distinctive hand painted cow hide shields

Another shot of the mounted men, sorry having trouble getting a clear shot of these small guys

The Javelin men, again two bases each of five figures.

Two bases of Archers, again two bases each of five figures.

And with the rear rank brought to the front

A better shot of the Javelinmen

Now the Celts:

The Celt contingent, 2 bases of cavalry and two bases of skirmishers

Close-up on the Javelin armed skirmishers, shields are again hand painted

Another view of the Javelin men.

Celtic Cavalry, javelin and sword armed with a mix of armoured and unarmoured figures

Another view of the Celtic horse.

And finally the others!

Two bases of Lybian Skirmishers armed with spear and shield

Rear rank brought forwards

Two bases of Iberian slingers

And the rear rank of the slingers brought forwards

Hopefully next week back to 28mm Arthurians - although I do have some 20 or so more Carthaginian Horse to get completed!

Ah, a slow week. Only 180 points! Oh my. Well, at least you made the effort, Mike! All joking aside, you have been busy. I always like your Epic contributions, and this is no exception. A fine and varied entry. I particularly like your Celtic troops, but the others look good too. I'll top you up to 185 points for the handpainted shields, they really do something for these 15mm figures. I am looking forward to seeing a group photo of all your epic troops when you have finished them. Well done!

From TamsinP: 15mm Roman & Numidian Cavalry [Swords & Sandals] (104 points)

Moving on from the Westerns studio, I find myself in the Swords & Sandals studio. Luckily, in the drawer of minis I failed to paint in AHPC XII there were some 15mm cavalry figures that worked for this and which will help to round out my Early Imperial Roman army for Art de la Guerre.

Numidian Light Cavalry

I only need two bases for a "standard" 200 point army; the third base (which has the two figures with damaged javelins) will allow me to run a 300 point army if I ever fancy a larger (and longer) game.

Roman Auxiliary Cavalry

On checking my (painted) Roman army box, I found that I already have more cavalry than I actually need, so these will just be for if I want to run auxiliary cavalry with different shields.

I did have some Gallic cavalry to paint as well, but I realised that I wouldn't get them finished and be able to base everything in time to get them submitted this week, so the Gauls will make a separate appearance.

The figures are all 15mm from Lancashire Games.

For Scoring

21 x 15mm cavalry @ 4 = 84 points

1 x studio @ 20 = 20 points

Total = 104 points

Next stop - the Fantasy studio

Friday Minion: Morning Tamsin, great to have you with us on a chilly Friday. I imagine it's satisfying finishing a project like this (or better, painting things because they're there, even if you don't need them) - alas the butterfly in me means I seldom have the pleasure.

Nice job, both of these cavalry units look great. I find Numidians look good in any scale with the extra visual interest of their hide shields, and the accurate horse markings really lift these minis.

RobH - Numidian Field Force Part A (140 Points)

I finally got around to working on both the crewmen for my elephants and the Victrix Miniatures pack of Numidian cavalry that I picked up. These is part of a new project to build an Art de la Guerre Numidian Army. This is part A as only the cavalry component is ready today. I still need to apply decals to the elephants.

State of project last Friday afternoon

Points

12 @ 10 Points 28mm Mounted Figures = 120 Points

20 Points - Under Construction (Next door to Black and White Studio)

Minion Miles: love 28mm ancients!

From Millsy: 28mm Numidians - Altar of the Snowlord (210 points)

Hi All,

This is my final post for this year's Challenge and it fulfils my very own personal assignment set by the Curt for the his Altar in the Chambers of the Challenge.
I had an 80% completed Numidian army which was lacking a couple of core infantry units so I've painted those up (100 + 20 bonus = 120 points), plus thrown in a pair of elephants with escorting skirmishers (2 x 45 = 90 points) as icing on the cake. In theory all that is missing now is some Celtiberian cavalry.

All miniatures are from Victrix with decals from LBM. I had something of a disaster with one of the decal sets (don't ask) so one howdah is a little less ornate than the other but I don't mind the overall finish.

Thanks Bruce for painting such a wonderful miniature for me as a prize, much appreciated mate.

Curt, thanks yet again for your efforts to keep the Challenge going from year to year. Having missed the last one I was doubly keen for this one and have enjoyed it immensely. Sarah, thank you for your efforts in wrangling both Curt when he is most distracted and for Sarah's Choice which is a real treat. Thanks also minions for your efforts yet again, it wouldn't be the same without you. Finally thanks to my fellow challengers for your comments on my own work and more importantly for sharing your own which I find inspiring, diverting and in many cases dangerously seductive and potentially harmful to my credit card balance!

Cheers everyone. I hope you all stay safe, well and are looking forward to a better year than last.

From: MartinC - Numidian Cavalry (230 pts)

For Christmas I received 2 boxes of Victrix Numidian Cavalry from my baffled sister. They are really great, very well sculpted, easy to assemble and very dynamic. My only gripe is that there are only 4 different arm poses. Luckily I have loads of suitable arms in the bits box from the Perry Mahdists, so I used some of these.
There are 23 of them, there are 12 per box but I needed one to use to cast more elephant riders. This worked OK and so there is another elephant to make from the Northstar safari collection.

These guys, and next weeks submission, will fight on Sunday with republican Romans against evil Persians. My first battle using my Rep Romans resulted in their slaughter because they got mullered by elephants. Hence my need for elephants in their 2nd battle.

23 cavalry = 230 pts

Martin, that is one awesome and massive block of speedy death on horses. Those Numidians really look the part. How in the world did you get those lines of the Carthaginian Goddess symbol on their shields so thin? It looks really nice. The basing is great too since it could be used in Northern Africa but also easily pass for Northern Italy at that, so if Hannibal takes these chaps over for a well deserved vacation you do not need to rebase. 230 well earned points indeed. I am wondering though, why your sister was baffled...

Cheers Sander

Welcome to Challenge Grahame and what an entry!  Staggeringly good work Sir and I can't thank you enough for the handy breakdown of units to help with my awarding of points!  I have to confess that I know little of working with 15mm miniatures, but when I look and my beloved 28mm and try to imagine working on something half the size my admiration for your post increased ten fold.  Tremendous start to your campaign and I am happy to award you an impressive 820 points!
