From StuartL - A Terrifying Tale of Turnips - 25 points

Hi all,

I managed to get another entry finished off this morning, and I have just enough time to get it posted before I start work. A few years ago, the game Turnip28 squelched onto the scene and was quite popular for challengers. I worked on a small force myself. However, I was always one commander and one unit short of finishing my army. Today, I am proud to say that I have completed my last entry for that force.

'He's a Very Naughty Boy'

One day, Farmer Brown was in his field tending his turnips. He would always stand in the same spot and watch his turnips growing. As they didn't grow very fast, he would stand there for a very long time.
Now, on that particular day, as he was standing in that particular spot, he saw a particularly peculiar figure. Dressed all in robes, carrying a long staff and with a body made up of a spongey green plant.

"Mornin'," said Farmer Brown. "Lovely day for turnip farming isn't it?"
".....," replied the newcomer.
"I guess so," said Farmer Brown. "Do you have a name there stranger?"
".....," replied the newcomer.
"The Moss-iah? Well, that's a new one on me," said Farmer Brown.
".....," said the Moss-iah.
"I'd never really considered that," said Farmer Brown.
".....," said the Moss-iah.
"But who'll stand here and watch the turnips grow?" asked Farmer Brown.
".....," replied the Moss-iah, handing Farmer Brown a gun.

".....," said Farmer Brown as he took the Moss-ket.

First up, we have the Moss-iah. A strange figure moving slowly through the boggy marshes of Turnip28. Rumour has it, that if you stand in the same place long enough, he will appear and enlist you into his entourage.

Next, we have the four Moss-keteers, sworn to protect the Moss-iah at all costs. Equipped with their powerful black powder moss-kets, they are not to be taken lightly. As their motto says, '.....!'

The Moss-iah model is an old D&D cultist figure, while the Moss-keteers are Warlord Games AZW British. All of the figures were painted and then a mix of green paint, PVA glue and flock was used for the moss. Once that had dried, I added some washes and drybrushes to give the moss more colour.

In terms of points these are just 28mm infantry, for a simple 25 points, plus another Squirrel point.

  My ongoing duels information:
Skulls - 218 (+0)
BSRoD - 16 (+0)
Squirrels - 14 (+1) - D&D Animals, 30K Militia, Plague Clowns, Afghans, Robots, Anglo-Saxons, Medieval Polish, Clan Smoke Jaguar, 81st West Africans, Undead, 10mm FPW French, Daemons of Khorne, Modern Vehicles, Turnip28

From DaveD , A second bite of the cherry for Stuart or maybe it’s the turnip . I like mine roasted .. anyway a decent bit of output , the greens have worked well . 25 points it is .

From SteveA: Turnip 28 , Frosthaven(140 points)

Rounding up my submissions for this fine AHPC XV is the continuation of my efforts to complete my first Turnip  28 army is two Regiments of Fodder, a Toff and a couple of Toadies to fill the ranks of   "Les Betteraves Royales Maléfiques du Grand Destin, du but Prédestiné et du design Inspiré !!"

The Fodder and Toff are converted models from the Victrix kit  'Napoleon's Middle Imperial Guard, Fusiliers-Grenadiers' # VX0016.   Green stuff of course features prominently for conversions to create roots and Plague doctor style masks, as does the use (and abuse) of Tajima1 grass tuffs typical of Turnip28 conversions.  To punch up the vegetation tufts sprouting from these Fodder I also used bristles clipped  from a (new and unused) shower scrub  brush, where I dipped the extended bristly tips  first in glue then in fine sand to (hopefully) infer a flower or small leaf effect at the ends of long slim stems.

For the banners I drew inspiration from a recent 'Peachy Tips' YouTube video for the use of masking tape to craft cloth capes for conversions, to my current need to create cloth banners
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJ0cOFKpto4
My banner cost of arms art needs some skill-ups for future efforts, but hopefully  what many layers of paint wash and  battle damage cannot hide here, the lore of decay and corruption afforded by the world of Turnip can perhaps obfuscate behind assumptions that the Fodder, rather than I,  are woefully ill-equipped and nigh-useless at free hand banner painting.

One of my Toadies is an olde thyme GW Halfling adventure conversion up with green-stuffed mushrooms rising from his back to effect his bragging a taller stature and the other Toady is a converted 10mm Troll 3d misprint mashed up with a few of the same Victrix kits bits, hence scoring this one Turnip 28 mini as a 10mm model.

When working on my first few T28 head conversions I became a little frustrated with my efforts to sculpt green stuff into  plague doctor style masks into something more elegant than looking like the drooping noses of chubby elephant seals. After some mucking about and experimenting I found I could easily achieve a long tapered nose for the mask by first crafting up the same disappointing chubby mask, but then rather than using tools to somehow force a sculpt of fine features I instead just pinched the mask's chubby nose tip between my fingers and then pulled and stretched the green stuff  away from the bulk of the green stuff stuck to the model's face and kept slowly pulling and stretching past the green stuff's stretchy breaking point, which left me with a satisfyingly   long and narrow length of green stuff  protruding from the model face for me to sculpt into visages closer to my artistic vison. I am keen to return to more T28 conversion in future to better evolve mask sculpting techniques, as these conversions were fun to do.

Squirrel! huh wuh? Do I hear the sweet jangling of keys???   Unplanned and imperfect is this last entry here, a Deathwalker mini from the Frosthaven board game that I play most Thursdays with ByronM and some other fine folk as fate permits.  On impulse  last week we decided to paint up the  minis for the characters we played, to add more colour and spectacle to the weekly-ish game

Not my best, but hopefully board game worthy to combat vs cardboard standy monsters.  This is the 3rd or 4th repaint within the same past week to sort out colours and contours before I had to invoke the ancient power of GEMO ( Good Enough, Move On) against my impulses to overcome this re-visitation to my to memories of more (ahem) "youthful" years skill level of painting.  This isn't the only distraction from the well constructed painting plan I had at start of this years challenge, but at least it resulted in another mini no longer blighted by the grey

Magnifique Turnips Mssr! I particularly like the way you've incorporated bright gaudy colours, yet kept their miserable demenour- trés bien! I particularly admire the additional kit bashing and con version - only Turnip touched affecionados know how much additional work does into this madness - to do so during the Challenge is, well, madness! (I speak from experience naturally)

What a great note to finish your Challenge on Steve. Better take a few rooty bonus points for the wonderfully tattered, hand made flags too :-)

From GavinB- New WoTR Army, Disturbing T28 fellows, and The Walking Dead, Oh My! (145 points)

And I swore to myself that I would not be a wargames butterfly, and yet here we are...

Hello everyone, sorry its been a while! For my birthday I received the Wars of the roses supplement for Hail Caesar 2nd edition and decided to start a new division. (Ill take any excuse I can get to paint more WoTR Figures) This time I choose to make Richard Neville, 5th earl of Salisbury, and I figured I'd try a new basing system too, because I'm not very pleased with the way I did them in the previous division

Anyway I made two test bases of troops, one of bill and the other of bow, and I was pretty happy with the results. When I start a new project I always get exited about making the command base, So as soon I finished the test figures, I pulled some Green Stuff, multiple boxes of perry plastics, and a 100mm base and got to building. At first I planned on using the metal Perry miniature of the earl of Salisbury on foot, but it just didn't feel right, I wanted him on a horse, so I built a new Salisbury from the mounted men at arms set and sculpted a bevor onto his face that way it resembled the metal foot version of him. After the other fellows were built I smashed some  modeling compound onto the base making it appear as if he and his his men were charging down onto a road. And In the end I was very pleased with how it came out!

17 x 28mm foot figures (Including both the unit bases and command base) for 85 points

2 mounted figures for 20 points

Totaling 105 points

This man at arms really adds some personality to the base!

I bit of string always make archers look a lot better!

And The Command Base:

CHARGE!!!

A close up of Richard

My attempt at hand painting a flag...

Turnip28... On my last post I had made a unit of Fodder for the Parsnip Pustules 91st. Well now its time to give those guys a toady to command them and who better to lead the Fodder into battle than  Peeves! (Or "Little P" as his men call him) But with Peeves's little stubby legs he cannot maneuver about the battlefield quickly to keep up with his men, and with the size he is, he would end up getting lost under the legs of the soldiers and no one would be able to hear his commands. So this is when his handy "assistant" Jim comes in, Peeves rides on Jim's shoulders which kills two birds with one stone, now he sits up above everyone else and Jim's lanky legs let him travel with speed that Peeves alone could never accomplish.

Peeves was built entirely out of green stuff (aside from his hands and pan on his belt) and Jim was just a zombie miniature that I had kicking about with a basinet plate glued onto his face and I did some repositioning of his back and arms. I'm not really sure how much points these two are worth because Peeves is kind of small so I will just not score him and say:

1 28mm figure for 5 points

Oh Jim How did you get yourself tangled up in that barbed wire

I have one last quick T28 figure and then it will be onto the walking dead. In turnip 28 a lot of people represent battered units with teeth tokens which I will probably switch back to, but I just wanted to try something different so I made a poor guy bleeding out in the mud to represent the battered units. I used a lot of greenstuff to change the position he was in and to make that classic T28 style helmet. Then I caked on a lot of mud and blood!

1 x 28mm Foot figure for 5 points

Ouch!!

Does someone need a hand?

Okay sorry about how long this is, but we are at the final section don't you worry! The Walking Dead All Out War! and this weekend I really got the itching to paint up these wonderful miniatures. So I primed a batch of walkers and Clementine, who is obviously one of the best characters in the walking dead, along side Lee Everett. To your relief there is not a whole lot to say about this bunch so...

5 x 28mm Foot figures for 25 points!

I do not want to be that deer !

And Clementine:

Thanks for reading my post, sorry it was a long winded one, I know that you have a lot better things to do than listen to a strange person talk about what he's been painting. And I also apologize for the lighting inconsistencies, I got a special lighting box for taking pictures and I am still figuring it out.
POINT TOTALS:

24 28mm figures for 120 points

2 Mounted figures for 20 points

The total points of all of the miniatures is 140 (If my math is right!)
Happy Painting!
Gavin

Well done Gavin! As you indicate in your headline, this is quite the assortment of painting to take in - and it is all of very high quality. I am always tickled to see some Turnip28 stuff - and "Peeves" looks like he will fit right in with his lot. And we all enjoy seeing more Zombie, and Zombie-adjacent content.

But I truly tip my hat to your WOTR stuff. I am totally captured by the idea of that period, but the banners/livery is so intimidating to me that I chicken out every time before I try it, and I have a lot of respect for those willing to tackle it. You have done fine work on the fellow who was "the Kingmaker" - at least, I think he was? Anyway, it looks tremendous. I am tossing in a few bonus points for the hand-painted flag - bravo, and thanks for sharing all of these photos and the thoughts which accompany them!

From SteveA:Turnip 28 (32 points)

And now I too turn up at the Turnip table..... with the first painted followers from my first Turnip 28 Regiment:    "Les Betteraves Royales Maléfiques du Grand Destin, du but Prédestiné et du design Inspiré !!"

Presented here are the Stump Gun Artillery Piece, its crew and leading Snob/Toady.

The Stump Gun and 2 Artillery crew adorned with the tall bearskin hats are Turnip 28 3d printed minis I obtained from ByronM, while the 3rd crew with the fuse lighting torch is an old converted  ( ala green stuff, grass tufts)  GW Warhammer Fantasy Battle Empire artillery crew mini from a mixed bag of unwanted minis I was gifted about 30 years ago from a friend abandoning WFB.  The cart supporting the stump gun is also of GW vintage stock from a WFB blister pack of  horse and cart baggage train minis I had impulse bought from my local hobby shop around that same time in the mid 90s.

The Toady is a converted model from the Victrix kit  'Napoleon's Middle Imperial Guard, Fusiliers-Grenadiers' # VX0016.  The Toady's head was obtained from a stl I found last year on Thingiverse , but  I cannot seem to find on the site currently.  Arms/weapons are from my old WFB bits box,  and of course the rest is a dose of green stuff and grass tufts befitting the Turnip 28 basic conversion techniques to represent the rooty corruption.

The minis are painted with a combination of Army Painter's regular paints and layers of AP speed paints.  The bases colour is mostly Burnt Umber brown  Liquitex brand basics acrylic paint & Argrax Earth Shade.

I have not much developed background lore for my Regiment as is often expected in theme of a Turnip 28 force,  but I will create some simple lore as I paint more, and I know these Royal Baleful Beets of Grand Destiny and Fated Purpose and Inspired Design, seek out the rare parts of the root that mimics beets from which rooty juices they can craft the Royal Purple dyes they crave to stain the remains of their battered uniforms so they can resplendently display a colour befitting their private perceptions of their public status.

Total Points = 30

x1 Toady                          (28mm Foot Figure) = 5pt
x1 Stump Gun              (28mm Artillery)   = 10 pts
x3 Stump Gun Crew     ( 28mm Foot Figure) = (3x5)=15 pts

-----

Another convert to the rooty goodness! Great work Steve, they look wonderfully miserable (ie great!) - your conversion work on the gun really good too. Take a few bonus tubors!

From GavinB, Some Walking Dead All Out War Vehicles and a unit of Fodder for T28 (140 Points)

This Christmas I was graciously granted The Walking Dead All out war 2024 Collectors Edition, and an extra box of perry French Napoleonic infantry! There is no better way to spend holiday break than painting up more miniatures!

WALKING DEAD ALL OUT WAR:

Looking through the assortment of minis that comes with the collectors edition of this game I figured it would be best to begin with the cars because I have not painted a vehicle in a very long time, also due to the fact that I am not fully sure how I want to base the actual miniatures yet... There is really not to much to say about these so, Four 28mm vehicles for 80 points!

A bullet hole in the windshield... Someone's a good shot

Does not look like this cars going anywhere anytime soon...

I made this truck less broken down then the rest because we plan on using it for a scenario where you have to get it up and running before the enemy survivor group finds out and stops you.

This truck needs a good cleaning.

TUNIP28 UNIT OF FODDER

My new regiment, the Parsnip Pustules 91st was looking way too small, with only one toady and a unit of chaff, I wanted to add a unit of fodder, and since I had received a box of French Napoleonic perry plastics I decided to take the opportunity to pull out my green stuff and clippers and get to work mutating these little fellows, chopping off their torsos and replacing them with those of Agincourt foot knights from a previous project, then I did some sculpting to their helmets to fit the signature Turnip 28 art style! I also was given the Woodland Scenics water effect for Christmas and had a lot of fun sloshing this stuff on their bases to give them that muddy effect. Twelve 28mm foot figures for 60 points!

Anyway sorry for boring you with my ramblings, now, the photos!

Sorry for the camera angle, it was hard to get them all into the pictures

I put my graphic design to use and made a flag on photoshop. Hand Painting them is too hard for me! I have a lot respect for those who can do that.

Adding up the points for cars and the Fodder should total up to 140 points (If my math is correct). Huh I think I set my point target too low...
Happy painting everyone!!

Great work Gavin. I have this same set of vehicles and they're such wonderful bits of kit. I like how you've weathered them, especially the dusty windshield on the last one. Personally I wouldn't bother basing them as I think they look great just plopped on the tabletop as is, but horses for courses. I'm loving your Parsnip regiment! I did a large force of Turnip28 models a few editions ago and really enjoyed the whole free-ranging, no-rules approach to it. I especially like your dolorous standard bearer - great work on the mods. These guys will make great fertilizer to the Great Root in your coming games.
