From TeemuL: Horticulous Slimux on Mulch (25 points)

Horticulous Slimux the Grand Cultivator of the Garden of Nurgle. I know many of the participants are eager gardeners, this miniature is a humble tribute to all of you. This is my second copy of the same miniature. First one I painted as part of Nurgle Daemon army for Age of Sigmar and I got this second one as a Christmas gift shortly after and decided to bring him as an ally for my Death Guard army for Warhammer 40000. I didn't have any daemons in my 40k army and I was struggling to figure how to paint him as a daemon, but still part of the army. Problem was solved by dropping out of 40k gaming... But since this was a gift, I felt obliged to paint it and year ago I assembled and primed it for previous Challenge, but never got further. Slimux has been staring at me for a year, so I decided I have to paint him and figure the colours while going. I have been painting him for a month, most often focusing on the other minis, because I didn't know what colours to use and how to paint.

In the end I followed the colours of my Death Guard army and tried to do my best with organic surface. I guess it is ok. Some of my Death Guard shown here: Death Guard. Hmm, six years ago... Time flies like a fly.... So the mount and rider are both quite white, that's basically white paint under Reikland Fleshshade. Then there are some greens to show connection to Nurgle and orange contrasts that nicely. And the combination of colours looks rather sick. Horns, nails, bones and similar are yellowish and woods are dark brown, looking a bit rotten I hope.

Rather new multipart plastic Warhammer 40k/AoS Nurgle Daemon special character. Barks and others, I'm quite sure you all are eagerly counting the skulls on this beauty! There are none...

I'm currently at the fourth circle of Abyss and next one would be Wrath, but I'd like to travel to Violence instead. I'm not fast enough to go through all the locations. Traditionally a female figure has been accepted as a passage to a different location, but this year devils and daemons are accepted, too, in the Abyss. Slimus is definitely a Nurgle Deamon looks a daemon enough, not sure about the female... In case he/she is a mortal and not a daemon, the Nurgling used as a bait is definitely a daemon. So I should be safe.

And the points... Is this a cavalry model? Or vehicle? Vehicle with a crewman/daemon? Or two crewmembers? How many points? Well, at least 10 for a cavalry, but Mulch is rather big, so might be counted as a vehicle, too. The oval base is 105x70mm. I'll leave the decision to knowable hands of minion Sarah.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Teemu

If I were to see this creature-thingy in my garden beds,  I would feel the need to either crush it with my spade or to spray it with some sort of toxic weed killer. Actually, I lie ... I would shriek and hope Curt would come to my rescue!

I rule that it's very much a 'vehicle' and am adding another 5 (Minion's Whim) for the 'yuck' factor and I allow you to pass on to the Violence circle of hell.

25 points to your tally

From Barks: Who ate all the pies? (Gluttony) (44 points)

I painted a yellow Nurgle marine for the Challenge a few years ago- they're wonderfully ridiculously overdetailed, and quite draining to paint. But I enjoyed it, and a few more have landed in my pile of potential. Last year I painted a lot of zombies, and some had a more orange tint that I liked. So this is a new Nurgle lord that I'm using for 'Gluttony'. He's a cheerful chap, generously handing out Grandfather's gifts. I quite like the cartoony splashes of vibrant colours.

I'm very happy with the hot pustules on his knee. Ready to burst!

His cloak is crawling with maggots.

To get to this circle, I summoned these Ynfernael Hulks from the Descent boardgame. Over a white undercoat I painted the same orange as the marine (Army Painter Speed Paint 2.0 Zealot Yellow) and drybrushed them black then grey. I'm not quite satisfied with the eyes.

That's three big boys; each is on a 50mm base. I'm claiming 8 points each, and +20 for the Glutton.

3 x monsters 24 points

Gluttony +20 points

Can opener side duel +8

From Millsy:

The title of this post made me laugh out loud and for that you have my thanks Barks! If there's anything more appropriate for the Gluttony bonus then I have no idea what it is.

He's absolutely revolting and I love him, from the tip of his hideous pestilent horns to the tips of his disgusting pus filled boots. The saturated green really gives off a vibe of something clearly not right and the yellow armour is a great choice as it really works and I'm sure I've never seen yellow Death Guard before.

Chuck in a couple of creepy lava monsters and you're earned a tidy 44 points. Nice one mate!

Cheers,
Millsy

ByronM - Maggotkin of Nurgle: Daemons, Warcry Warband [115 Points]

For this entry I am submitting my pestilent Maggotkin of Nurgle: Daemons warband for the Games Workshop game of Warcry.  Warcry is never a game I really wanted to get into as it is really simplistic and doesn't have much tactical depth, however...  I ended up jumping in on it for two reasons.

First, both of my sons started playing it recently and kept bugging me to play it with them.  Since they have never before really shown interest in many miniature games, despite years of trying to get them to play, I figured I kind of had to jump in with them.  Secondly, I have lusted after the Nurgle Plague Drone models since they came out years ago, thinking they looked too cool and would be a challenge to paint.

So with those two reasons I jumped all in and got some Plague Drones, and dug up a box of Plague Bearers from my endless pile of GW shame and got to work on my warband.   With my slightly evil and warped sense of humour, I affectionately refer to my warband as "The Vaccinated" as they have lovingly accepted every injection of filth that Grandfather Nurgle has offered.

These models were a lot of fun to paint, but a pain in the @$$ to photograph, and the pictures still didn't turn out well after almost a whole afternoon of trying to get good ones.  The issue is that they are missing so much of the glazes that show up in person.  They have multiple glazes of greens, oranges, blues, and purples in different shades that show up as rotted/bruised flesh, but no matter how many pictures in different lights I take, they just do not show up well.  So the images you see are all you get, as I gave up in frustration.

The painting method was pretty simple, I primed brown, then zenithal highlighted bleached bone.  From there it was a matter of various Vallejo Xpress colours layering over the primer to build up greens and then reds around wounds, then blues, purples, oranges around the sours and various skin areas.  Once all that was done and dry I used dead flesh to highlight all the edges and the pustules.  It was a fairly easy process that looks great (to me at least) in person, but shit in these pictures, sorry guys.

For the weapons I used silver then build up layers of browns, reds and oranges for a super rusty and old look.  The banner was done as bronze and then a layer of verdigris was added to give it that old weathered look.  I might have to go add some more, but I haven't decided for sure yet.

The Plague drones were something I have wanted to do forever, hence the Lust points for them, but was never sure I could pull them off, and unfortunately I don't know if I really have.  They are certainly filthy and disgusting, but I am not sure I got the wings or carapace right, but not sure what else to do with either item, so am open to ideas from you guys.

Overall though, while there are parts of these models that I know others could do better, I am actually happy with them (which is very uncommon for me) and proud to show them off, although I wish they showed up here as they do in real life.  But I still think they look good and feel the plain grey base helps make the figures themselves pop a bit more, and the brightly coloured flowers help add a bit of an alien feel to them.

Lastly, if anyone out there wants to try Warcry, in a very NON-GW move, GW has all the rules and faction lists up online for free here: Warcrier.net.  Overall it's not a bad game, and I get the appeal of a lot of the rules and how it plays, it's just not my cup of tea, but for a chance to play with my boys, I had to paint up a force for it.

Wonderful work on this host of Father Nurgle, Byron ('The Vaccinated' prompts a big eyeroll, but whatever). They look suitably and impressively revolting (and I say that in the nicest possible way). I like all the colours and textures that you've provided - amazing. Painting figures in order to play with your kids sounds like a great idea even if the rules are not to your liking. It won't be long when spending time with you may not be their first choice so I agree that you should grab the nettle while you can.

We'll put the Plague Drones as 15 a piece giving you a grand total of 115 points. Great work and enjoy rolling out these little monstrosities against your boys.

From GeoffreyT: The final library shelf (Rare and Antique books, 73 points)

Hello Challengers,

I have reached the final destination and have negotiated with the snow lord for the final challenge.  It is a retro 1987 Palanquin of Nurgle by Citadel Miniatures.  I picked it up in a sale of old stock for a gobsmackingling low price of $10.  Such a bargain that it should be in the true crime section.

This is a difficult miniature to paint, and I dont think I really did this awesome sculpt justice, but had a fair crack.  So much detail, and with all the muted colours I needed black-lining to delineate areas.

Next is the king of the jungle, a giant ape holding his friend by the hand.  This is an old Reaper metal model.  Does his friend count as another half a miniature?

This is a 3d printed post box.

Here are a bunch more 3d printed widgets I picked up at a bring and buy. Will be excellent as post apocalyptic loot tokens.

That is all for the bonus points for me, will be hard work from now on.

Palanquin = 1 mounted 28mm = 10 points [Millsy - let's call this a vehicle @ 20pts]

Kong = 1 x 40 mm figure = 7 points

6 widgets, 1 each = 6

Rare and Antique books = 40 points.

Total = 63 points. [Millsy - adjusted to 73 points]

Kind Regards

Geoff.

From Millsy: I'm so utterly gobsmacked by the bargain you got with the Palanquin of Nurgle I'm struggling to write something meaningful! What an amazing find and I am more than a little jealous Geoff. I love that you've leaned right into the vintage nature of the model with the flame effect on the plasma pistol. The other stuff is very well done too but I only have eyes for Nurgle right now...

From Millsy: Nurgle? Ewwwww!!! (90 points)

All things foul and pestilent
All creatures bloated by rot
All things foetid and maggoty
Papa Nurgle corrupted the lot.

G'day All,

I'd wanted these finished last week but there's so much fiddly detail they've taken much longer. You simply can't rush disgusting it seems. So what do we have here?

Death Guard Space Marine Heroes

I'd already said once before I was done painting Death Guard and then these finally appeared at a price that didn't make my eyes water so what are you going to do? Only Morslug is missing so if you have one and are willing to part with him let me know as we can maybe cut a deal.

Great Unclean Ones

These two were part of a lot from eBay which also included the Daemon Prince below. They were incorrectly listed as metal and turned out to be resin, but the seller was a generous chap and refunded 2/3 of the purchase price given his error so one of these two plus the Daemon Prince effectively ended up being free. They needed a lot of clean up and repair work beyond just stripping the original paint job but I think they came out alright in the end. We might need a new version of the Skullz tally for hideous boils now...

Quite what I will do with two of these I don't know. If someone would like to swap the chap without the horns and tongue thingy for something else let me know.

Chaos Daemon Prince

Is this the worst resin min ever made by GW? Quite possibly! It was full of miscast sections, fitted together really poorly and (no fault of GW) was missing his sword. No suitable replacement was available and I wasn't going to buy one so he got a leftover sword from a Death Guard Terminator. It looks ridiculously small in his ham fist and makes me laugh every time I look at it.

I've decided he annoyed Papa Nurgle enough that having lost his sword he was forced to use a small cheese knife instead. For those interested, the Plaguefather does have his own cheese line called Stilton. Wikipedia says it has a "characteristic smell and taste" which is like saying the ocean is a little damp. I once spent a day in a camper van with a wheel of this stuff whilst bringing it home from a trip for my grandfather and the smell really is no joke.

Points-wise...

  • 6 x 32 (28mm) infantry = 30 points
  • 3 x "giant-sized" critters @ 20 points each = 60 points

Total = 90 points

Anyway, that's all the unpainted Nurgle stuff I had left. Pleased to have cleared the decks on another project with a few odds and sods left to do. Hopefully anyone who looked at this hasn't lost their lunch. Apologies if that's the case!

Cheers,
Millsy

***

Hello Millsy - and hello again to all AHPC participants. My thanks to Millsy and the other Minions for their efforts stepping in to cover my duties for the past couple of weeks while I had to focus on moving to our new house. The move is now out of the way! The packing, not so much...but the worst part is done, at least...so I can devote some time to the Challenge again!

And what a project to return to! Nurgle figures make me laugh, as they inspire quite the fan following, which GW nourishes by issuing a pretty steady stream of new figures and characters through every generation of figures. The Nurgle figures always attract the talents and efforts of excellent brush folks - just like Millsy here...sigh...Nurgle is like the Bon Jovi of the Chaos gods...but I digress...

You have done great work here Millsy, catching every detail with your brush. Nurgle figures are notorious for offering all sorts of small details, and you have honoured the sculptors' work with your brushes! The magical effects, the terrifying symbol, the censor...all well done, and that is before we come to the slumbering monster daemons!

That's 90 points for you! Congrats on getting another project done and dusted...and perhaps a Challenger can help you track down that missing Morslug?

Paul O'G: Pestigors in the Old World (50 points)

Those who study forbidden tomes know that within the dark forests of the Old World brood the evil  Beastmen, but some are dedicated to specific chaos powers. Those that choose the God of Decay and Pestilence are known as Magic the Gathering players Pestigors.

Pestigors: Baptised in Pus!

Amongst my stash of figs were these models begging for attention. These are metal 6th edition figures from 2003 and it took awhile to amass enough for the units size I desired under the old rules. I suspect that under the new system, small units may be more flexible so I will instead build them as 2 x 10 figure units.

Quite happy with the overall effect of the verdigris and rust effects!

To stand out amongst my Beastmen horde of mostly green and brown figures, I departed from the usual Nurgly greens. Instead, lighter sickly shades make the festering yellow and pink pustules look even lovelier. You're welcome!

Papa Nurgle's "Dream Team" take the field!

Just a small submission from me this week; 10 figs @ 5 points = 50 points. Sadly I've already used the Fantasy and Overdue bonuses but this will take me to my target, representing 8,000 points across the 10 AHPC seasons I've participated in.

And happy Australia Day today to all my fellow Aussies!

From Millsy: Happy Australia Day mate! Hope you avagoodun. Great looking Pestigors Paul, especially the rust effect and khaki shades on the clothing. These guys are properly intimidating. The Old World is getting a lot of existing lead painted up which is a positive if it achieves nothing else. 50 more points for your tally my friend.

From Barks: Zombies & Galadriel & new Challenger (Science Fiction, Library Cart) (197 points)

I'm finishing off my whirlwind library trip.

Firstly, thirty Poxwalkers. These are GW's science fiction zombies, and as such are overly detailed. They have these quite nice grins, and are erupting with tentacles and horns. One is turning into a fly. There are maggots crawling in and on the figures. My main complaint with the miniatures is that there is no simple route for customisation. I'd prefer to be able to adjust the angles of the arms, try out different heads etc, but I'm stuck with repeats of the same ten distinct monopose figures. Sure, I could convert them, but it's a bit too much work for fodder. I stuck to a limited palette with yellow accents.

Thirty poxwalkers

That finishes off my library tasks- so I summon Lady Sarah's Library Cart to take me to the Snowlord's shelves. This is a 3D print of the lady Galadriel and her mirror (Printing Goes Ever On). I threw in a quick eye of Sauron, which stands out much more than I had anticipated! I wonder if I should make the edges darker. Should I give it a coat of gloss?

30x 28mm Poxwalkers (150 points)

Science Fiction (20 points)

Lady Galadriel and mirror (7 points)

Sarah's Library Cart (20 points)

Now I'm ready to face the Snowlord's Challenge!

Addendum: I've added a new Challenger! The Skirt-Swisher has used her in-built 3D printer for a long print, I've removed the supports and washed off the residue.

I'm looking for name suggestions:
  • Boudica
  • Hive Queen
  • Montgomerina
  • Rommelina
  • Napoleonette
  • ?
From Millsy: Firstly, congrats to the both of you on the new arrival mate! So good to see your latest creation healthy and happy with her Dad. Remember its never too soon to start them on the brushes. Might I suggest Skullzette for a name? It has a lovely feminine tone and just rolls off the tongue.

On to more important matters and you've got another great entry here. I second your thoughts on the customisation options (or lack thereof) for the poxwalkers but as you say they're just chaff.

Galadriel is wonderful The Eye of Sauron is just brilliant. My first thought is she's thinking "Bugger. I knew washing the palantir in this thing was a bad idea!"
