From GrahameH: More of the same - 15mm Midianites & Prussian Napoleonics (940 Points)

 More of the same I am afraid but I have now finished the Midianites (Essex Miniatures)

The Midianites

So first up the last of the Midianite Warbands. Two units, each of 30 figures. I have no idea why but I have always wanted this army and have had the figures for years. So really pleased that the Challenge has given me the opportunity to paint them. I do try to paint a small army for the Challenge each year, so this is this years army.

Some bowmen (3 units each containing 18 figures)

Two units of skirmishing slingers (9 figures each)

And finally, for the Midianites my last camels (Hurrah!!). These will be added to the baggage

Midianites Points

Warband (60 Figures) = 120pts

Bowmen (54 Figures) = 108pts

Slingers (18 Figures) = 36pts

Camels (7 Figures) = 14pts

Total = 278pts

Napoleonic Prussian

I thought I had nearly finished this army, but I have just purchased 32 more cavalry, purely because I liked the uniform! As they say armies are never finished.

So, I have painted some cannon for the army. I painted the crew about a year ago, but the thought of painting some many cannons was rather off putting. However, all done now. 25 cannons of various calibre.

Also five Limbers (AB Miniatures)

And of course more cavalry (all AB miniatures)

Cuirassier Regt.

A Uhlan Regt.

Finally, my favourite, the 2nd (Leib) Hussars.

That is it for the Prussians. I need to decide which Napoleonics to do next. I dare say it will involve cavalry.

Points

25 Cannon at 4pts = 100pts

5 Limbers 9 Figures = 110pts ed:58pts

Cuirassiers = 32 Cavalry figures = 128pts

Uhlans = 32 Cavalry figures = 128pts

Hussars = 32 Cavalry figures = 128pts

Total 594pts

LOTR Men of Gondor

24 Gondor Infantry

Pts for Gondor = 120

I think that this brings this entries total to 992pts

Friday Minion: Wow, awesome points bomb once again Grahame. The hordes of Prussian cavalry, magnificent, and your basing is most effective on them.

On points, I think your tallies were right, except the limbers, that I scored as 15mm vehicles at 8 points a piece then added 2 points for each rider. I arrived at 940 points.

From GrahameH: Another 15mm Mix

 I am still focusing on getting some armies finished. So some more 15mm Midianites, Galatians, Prussian Napoleonic Cavalry and Early Republican Romans.

15mm Midianites (Essex Figures)

I can honestly say I am a bit fed up painting camels, but these, apart from some to be used with the baggage, are the last of them. Same as last time 16 double crew camels.

I felt that natural colours on the saddle cloths were a bit dull so I painted them brighter colours, so they would stand out more. However, not sure that was a good idea, so I painted the generals cloths in duller colours which now seems better. Oh well, live and learn, and they aren't too bad.

Next the General, two Sub-General (spot the old DBM players) and three camels on their own. I have started painting figures that are left in the packs once the army is completed. They can act as Heros in Too the Strongest rules or just extra baggage, but more importantly I don't want loads of unpainted figures hanging around and I can't bring my self to throw them away.

Points wise (see if I can get it right this time)

2 X Camel units of 16 camels (each camel = 3 figures) 96 X 2 = 192 pts
The General (9 Figures) = 18 pts
Sub Generals (10 Figures) = 20
The "Extras" (6 Figures) = 12 Points

Total = 242 points

The Early Republican Romans

I have now finished this army apart from the camp, which I will probably do after the challenge has finish. For some reason I think I am wasting time painting terrain when I could be painting figures!!

Three units of Triarii (Chariot Miniatures). Each unit is made up of 16 figures, rather than my usual 24, as they tended to operation in smaller units. I painted my Early Imperial Army red so, for a change, I painted this army white.

Then finally some Italian Allied Cavalry (12 cavalry) made by Essex Miniatures. These figures come in the same poses, so I turned their heads at different angles just to try and make the figures look different. Many a figure has been decapitated by turning them too far.

Another army finished (well apart from the Marching Fort).

Triarii = Each unit 16 Figures (32 points) - 3 units = 96 pts.
Allied Cavalry = 12 Cavalry = 48 pts

Total = 141

Galatians

A mentioned before I was going to sell this army, as I didn't really take to the figures, but I hate parting with figures, but I already had an Ancient Briton Army. So I thought I could use these as a small Galatian army, which I think is what Museum Miniatures call them. I read somewhere that the units on a table should never be more than the tables length multiplied by the tables width. I have a 6 X 4 table, therefore the total units on the table should be 24. 12 units per army, plus perhaps some skirmishers. So I thought I give this a try, but for some reason my armies seem to become large than this. No idea why.

The Last of the Galatian are some Skirmishers (3 to a base, 15 bases)

The General and Extras (13 Figures)

Some Galatian Cavalry (Essex Miniatures - I am a bit of an Essex Fan-Boy) 16 Cavalry

And finally three Scythed Chariots.

Apparently Galatians used these, although I'm not sure they has as many as I have painted? Added the reins too. It would seem I hate doing reins as much as I hate painting camels.

Skirmisher (15 bases each of 3 figures = 45 figures) 90 pts
General etc (13 Figures) = 26 pts
Cavalry (16 Cavalry = 32 Figures) = 64 Pts
Scythed Chariots (3 made up of 5 Figures and the Chariot - 10pts for the Crew & Horses, 5 for the chariot) T= 45 pts

Total = 225 pts

Napoleonic Prussian Cavalry (AB Figures)

My treat for painting the above, painting some more Napoleonics 😊

This is the the 6th Hussar Regiment (2nd Silesia). Some Prussians seemed to have two names just to confuse ME. (32 Cavalry). This regiment was painted as it was Green, and not BLUE, having got bored painting  a load of blue on Prussian Infantry prior to the challenge). You can obviously see now I get bored very easily.

The 5th (Pomeranian) Hussars (back to Blue) (32 Cavalry)

64 Cavalry = 256pts

And that is it until next Time.

Total

Midianites = 242
Roman = 141
Galatian = 225
Napoleonic Prussians = 256

Grand Total = 837 pts

Minion Miles: Now this is a post worthy of exclamation! 15mm Nappys FTW!  I came up with a slightly different total 846 points but thats your fault because I had to add up all the infantry and cav to get it in the spreadsheet

From GrahameH: Mixture of Stuff, but mainly 15mm (1447 Points)

Made it. My first post just in time (again). I am always impressed by the challengers who plan for this event every year, knowing exactly what they are going to paint, and have everything ready to go on the starting date. Although, I say every year that this time it will be different, I am going to plan etc, I never do. It may be because I always seem to be painting, having more opportunity to paint and collect rather than game. This, and I get bored easily, it seems every year, I am already in the middle of painting a number of armies. So it was this year, therefore, my first entry is a bit of a mish-mash.

Early Republican Roman

These are 15mm Chariot Miniatures figures. This is not a new army but having watched the Yorkshire Gamers You Tube video I decided my army was too small. I am now down to the last few units, but below are some of the units I have managed to complete during the challenge.

These are Roman Hastati. There are 16 figures to a unit as I wanted to make them smaller than my usual units of 24 figures. Total Points = 64pts

Next some Velites. I was really short of these as the army expanded, so I had to paint a further 39. Points = 78

15mm Galatians (Museum Miniatures)

This wasn't a complete army, and I was going to get rid of it as I already had a Ancient Briton army, but I hate selling painted soldiers so I thought I just buy a few more units and use it as Galatians. I think that what the figures are supposed to be anyhow.

Each unit is made up of 30 figures, as they warbands, so I add a few extra figures and put them on deeper bases. There are four units, the ones with white shields are naked fanatics (I have taken the picture of them at an angle to save their modesty and to try not offend anyone). Points 240

15mm Midianites (Essex Miniatures)

I decided that regardless of how much is currently I have on my painting table, I need something new to give my the feeling I had achieved something extra during this challenge. So having spent a couple of days going through my metal mountain (yes it is that bad), I decided that some camels could be fun. They weren't and I still have a few more units to paint.

Anyhow the camels. Currently, I have painted one Scout unit (12 X Camels). These are camels with single rider (48 points). Then four units of 16 camels with 2 riders (although 3 on the units have a leader who is mounted on a camel by himself  (so that's 3 units at 94 pts and one unit at 96 pts). Points total 378 pts. Sorry about the pictures but surprisingly the sun came out in the UK and I didn't notice.

The Foot Warriors. There are three warbands (30 figures each), a bow unit (18 figures) and a skirmish unit (9 figures). Points = 234

WW2 Italian Paratroopers . The "Folgore" Brigade (Battle Front Miniatures, and some 3D printed vehicles)

I really enjoy putting Rapid Fire units together in 15mm so below is part of the "Folgore" Brigade in North Africa. I had already painted the first Parachute Battalion so I have added another two Battalions, an Engineer Battalion, an HQ (vehicles are 3D prints) and 2 20mm AA vehicles (Battle Front), during the challenge.

Para Battalion X 2 = each of 34 figures = 136pts
Para Engineers = 36 figures and 1 gun = 76pts
2 AA Vehicles, each with 2 crew = 24pts
HQ 2 vehicles and 3 figures 22pts
Grand Total = 258pts

Photos of the two Para Bns are first, which are much the same and the Engineer Bn at the end (has more flamethrowers).

Prussian Napoleonic (AB Figures)

I couldn't do the challenge without painting figures for my favourite period, Napoleonic. Not sure I made the right deciding a few years back to base my figures on General de Brigade units. They take ages to paint and are expensive to collect. However, once done I do like the look of them in their big units. Anyhow two Prussian Cavalry Units completed each of 32 figures.
The first is the 3rd Brandenburg Uhlan Regiment and, the ones in a lighter blue coat, the 2nd Neumark Landwehr Cavalry (I had to replace some of the lances that broke off - the only problem I have with AB figures is lances, swords and bayonets are very delicate). 128 Pts

Finally something different for me - Games Workshop Gondor Infantry

Just fancied something different and these have been sitting on the shelves for years. A quick paint job, and another sneaky 60 points

Nearly forgot I also painted 3 tents for the Midianites (5pts)

So really finally I think that works out at 1205 points and a very big apology to the Friday Minion. SORRY.

Friday Minion: Holy Smokes Batman, what have we here? This seems like waaaay too much maths for first thing in the morning, but I think we got there.

It would be super helpful to my Friday morning minion brain to get the number of figures per scoring category claimed as a summary at the end of the post, because I came out with quite a different points tally. You can also break up your post into more than entry.

I make this out to be:

15mm infantry 359 models x 2 points each = 718
15mm cavalry and gun: 141 x 4 points each = 564
15mm vehicles 4 x 8 points each = 32
28mm infantry 12 x 5 points each = 60
Half a terrain cube for another 10 points

=1384

That leave us to deal with the extra 63 camel riders, at say 1 point each, for another 63.

I make that a grand total of 1447 points.

Of these, I particular appreciated the desert war Italians, with excellent definition, colour choices and groundwork they're a great looking force. The ancients hordes are very nice too, particualrly those Galatians with their jaunty shields and those Prussian cavalry with all their fluttering pennants look wonderful.

You may not have had a plan for the challenge, but you've made astounding progress this past month - what's next?
