ErikP - Digging Up Old Friends or Undead on the Rise for Midgard (points 35)

Hello Everyone,

For this week I have been digging these up from the grave.  Here are thirty-three (33) Wargames Atlantic 10mm foot Skeletons for the unit and command stand.

When I was starting to base these figures, I realized that somehow I miscounted how many figures I needed to paint. I was short a 5-man strip short.  As you can see here, the stand on the right side is missing the second rank. I'll finish the missing 5-Skeletons up when I paint up the next unit.

Other than that miscount, these figures have painted up pretty well.

The only issue may be that these figures are a bit thin as compared to some of the other undead that I have seen for this scale.  I used grass tuffs to add a little contrast and detail to the bases.

Recently BruceR submitted some great 10mm skeletons that had very nice bulk to them.  He did a really wonderful job on his army, posted on Wednesday 28 Jan, his figures are from Forest Dragon, 3D printed and they are pretty nice.

I am planning on using my undead figures for playing Midgard Heroic Battles rules by James Morris.  This was a test unit and Command base that I wanted to try.  I also picked up Orcs, Dwarves, and Samuri & Ashigaru from Wargames Atlantic as well, so this is the start of another big project getting back into 10mm fantasy battles.

I plan on using movement trays of four stands for using Midgard rules.  I envision vast armies fighting the battle of five armies.

These are going to replace the GW Warmaster Undead army I sold about 5-6 years ago, along with High Elves, and Chaos armies, what a mistake that was... Got to remember never sell projects you think you'll never go back too.  Leason learned, I hope.

These were primed with GW Bone Color, then washed with Army Painter Strong Tone, followed by Speed Paints for shields and the banner. Since they are just skeletons, I kept it simple and just highlighted the bones with Vallejo's Off White, and Vallejo metallics for weapons.

Command stand banner Skull is decal from an old GW Imperial Guard transfer sheet I had in a drawer.

Thank you for talking a look.

Summary of Points:

33 x 10mm foot @ 1 point = 33 points.

Total = 33 points.

Squirrel Points = +1 (Prussian Epic [13.5mm], Farmer Civilians 28mm, and Undead 10mm)

Total Squirrel Points = 3.

And + Skull Points = 35 Skull points.

From DaveD . Nice skellies. Thin undead somehow seem right to me. Well at least you get to paint new skellies to replace the old . , and it’s a cracking job . The banner is excellent , getting decals on in that space and the rest to do it deserves a little something . 35 it is

From BruceR: Still Warmaster just new army, Vampire Counts (257 points)

It's been in the deep freeze here in the North US so easy to stay inside and paint.  I continued on with my Warmaster  project/obsession with a new army.

Over the summer I had painted a box of Wargames Atlantic Orcs and tried out ordering 10mm 3d prints from etsy.  More Orcs so an army was formed.  I took off the shelf a Byzantine army I had painted while deployed in 2008, which had never found an opponent.  My empire force was born.  A gaming compadre flew in before Xmas and we played no less than 5 Warmaster games and the crew was hooked.  I maybe somewhat of a driving force with our crew and why not.  Now four others have launched armies, but who knows how long before they will be ready, so....

I ordered a Vampire Counts 1000-point army to add to my Orcs for flavor.  I usually seem to play good or at least not evil forces so I thought I would give them a shot being a couple of the mates have used undead when we had played WHFB.

Who doesn't need an evil vampire lord or lady terrorizing the villages and hamlets of the empire.

Wait!

That's more like it.

I set to work on one unit, then another, then another, .....Oh well.  I Have 80% of the 1000-point force done.

The force requires two skeleton units and two zombie units.  So, these were done first.
Lots of speed paints and a few highlights.  Grey base coat.  Mix of washes for the bone and then blue speed paint for clothes and shields.

Skeleton Regiment #1

Skeleton Regiment #2

On to the Zombies.  I tried to hit the flesh with a light green color (dead flesh).  Some white highlight were bone shows.  Next in with differing colors for clothes/rags.  A wash and done.

Brains!

Zombie Regiment #1 command stand

Zombie Regiment #2 Command Stand

Madness continued and on to the ghouls.  Decided a very lighter flesh was what I wanted and already used green for the zombies.  Once they were white primed, I hit them with speed paint light flesh. Decided they needed something else and went for some blood on hands and faces.  Not really into gore, yet they needed something and being wee figures doesn't really show unless you zoom into them.  Scraps of clothes hit and done.  The ghouls are not undead in Warmaster so can initiative charge, unlike the other undead forces.  Plus, they have 4 attacks per stand.

Ghouls

Next up was the ethereal host.  Terror causing phantasms.  These also ignore benefits when attacking defensive positions.  These might be cheating to claim points for painting.  Primed them white and hit them with speed paint (plasmatic bolt-army  painter).  Based them and done.

Ethereal Host

I next started the Grave Guard.  Armored skeletons, as medium infantry.  These I primed black and started by giving them a light brown dry brush to bring out detail.  Next highlighting the bone areas.  Red cloaks and armor.  I left the shields black with the light brown highlight and hit the skulls embossed on the shields.

The "Mortis" Grave Guard

To control these walking dead the army came with a number of character figures.  I choose a vampiress and a necromancer.

The vampire is mounted and really is a cool looking figure.  Some red, some black, some white skin and tried for a red lip.  Very fun.

To assist the general is the necromancer.  I still am in awe of 3d sculpts.  This guy is raising skeletons and you barely see the magic smoke leading to a hand coming out of the dirt.

These shambling dead took the field this weekend past.  A friend, who played undead in WHFB years ago, used them and almost wiped them out to a man/undead.  They have been blooded or unblooded.  Not sure.

The undead horde.

Before the game Sunday I did need another hero for the forces of good and hit this Witch Hunter before the game.

Deiter Von Helmutstein

Whew, that's it for me this week.  Very productive and the game was great with 5 of us playing with around 3000 points of baddies attacking a village defended by about 2300 points of humans.  Humans won as the undead and orcs were unable to destroy most of the village and the citadel.  Fun stuff.

21 stands of 12x 10mm undead @ 1pt      = 252 pts
 2 characters on foot @ 1pt                        =    2 pts
 1 character mounted @ 3 pts                    =    3 pts

Total                                                             257 pts

Skull dual entry (108 skeletons + 24 skull emblems and assorted skulls) Total 132.
I have been honored with skull of the week earlier so feel obligated to join.

I hope you enjoy.  Thanks to everybody once again.  I do believe this group helps support the hobby and at times us personally.  I would be fooling myself if I didn't think hitting my hobby desk helped me to pull away from the news and the absolute S#&t show we have been subjected to in the past week.

So, Thanks.  Be well and safe.

Sylvain: There is so much details in your tiny figurines that it blows my mind. Your variations in color, nicely done, bring a level of realism to your fantasy miniatures. I'm sure your army must be quite the attraction among your gaming group and most certainly a "trigger" for collecting armies. I adjusted the points because one of your heroes is mounted. Bravo!

From KillianF - 10mm Skeletons (35 points)

Good day all,

I managed to power through and finish three bases of the Wargames Atlantic Boneblades from their "Classic Fantasy Battle" range. I picked these guys up after signing up to the challenge, for the aforementioned reason that I reckoned they could look pretty good with some simple wash and drybrushing. Although this took me slightly longer than planned, I have finished a third of the box.

As per my previous post, having worked on these I think I prefer 3d printed 10mm. The necessities of injection moulding create some rather flat dimensions in plastic. However, for an entry point these are excellent, and provide significant value. There are some individual models along with 2, 3 and 5 skeleton strips, which mean they can be individually based and used for micro-scale skirmishing if desired. And at the end of the day, skeletons are skeletons.

Side shot really highlights the lack of depth.

I tried to give the impression on the shields of a variety of original colours having faded. The weapons got a brown and then orange wash to similarly age them.

I handpainted the banner again. I went back and forth as to what skeletons actually would have on a banner.

The classic skull didn't really appeal to me, and I couldn't get my head around doing a bronze age-esque rune or similar. I eventually alighted on an hourglass, following the imagery associated with death often found in medieval European art. The execution unfortunately went more in the direction of MS Clip Art: in my defence it is a tiny canvas. I'm not going to mess with it now, as from 2-3 feet away it is serviceable.

Points claim:

33x 10mm Infantry: 33 points

Squirrel points: 1 (4 total)

Thanks for reading!

And special thanks to Dave for dealing with my last minute shenanigans.

Killian

From DaveD . No worries , these are worth waiting for .They are impressive en masse , I look forward to seeing the rest of the box completed . Hand painting the banner is still cool and worthy of recognition. Let’s make that 35 points for you .

Not a bad showing Sunday crew !

From Ross M: 28mm Skeleton Archers (60 points)

These figures were not meant to be a part of this challenge or anything at present however, plans are made to be changed and changed they were.

There is a mixture of old and new in this so starting with the new, well nearly all of the new at eleven Oathmark skeleton based as a regiment for Kings of War. There is a twelfth figure on another base that will be here shortly.

When I say new, I should say newly painted as the figures have been in the pile of shame for several years now. The colour scheme was painted to match the previously painted figures as best as possible and there is one of the rear right hand group that does just that.

Here are both groups together, with the newly painted to the right of screen as viewed and the previously painted to the left. Same figures, paints, painting methods and varnishing; the difference between left and right has been a different primer. The newly painted were primed with grey car primer the previously painted skeletons had been primed with Army Painter Skeleton Bone....just goes to show how a little change can make a difference.

Basing these has been interesting and very similar to basing Impetus armies about a decade or so ago. The multi-figure base allows more use of flocks, tufts and foliage to create a theme on the basing and as a result across the army.

Hope that you like these and that I'll be able to sneak a post in before the end of the week. In terms of points I make this to be:

12 x 28mm infantry at 5 each = 60 points
12 skulls at 1 each = 12 points

Total for this entry being 72 points

Thanks for looking and if I am unable to post for the 20th, its been great being part of this in 2024/25.

Cheers for now.

The best plans are those that incorporate agility to shift with our ever changing whims Ross! And I'm thrilled that these bony lads made the cut. They really come together well en mass and the purple wildflowers on the basing give a great splash of colour to bring them together. Good stuff!

60 points for the figs (skulls don't get extra points that I'm tracking, sorry)
