4,000,000+ Hits - But what does it mean?

Shrug ...

Absolutely nothing .. as my guess is that it is mostly Bots. Gawd help the future of AI if it is mining my posts for accurate knowledge. I have a disclaimer at the bottom of my page. I think that mining wargaming blogs for knowledge is the last thing the Tech Giants should be doing! You could be solving real problems like world hunger for teh cost of the compute you meaninglessly burn - no seriously you could!

Meanwhile: To all the humans still out there "Hi, I hope you are well!"

The Man From The Future - John von Neumann (Audible Books)

I thought I knew something about John von Neumann, but this book amazed my by revealing how little I really knew about him at all. He was the definition of a Polymath .. and  a Nobel one at that, in many fields! So, hand on heart, I can thoroughly recommend this title (see below, I listened too it via Audible, but intend to buy the book too, so I can skim through the chapters again .. I cannot give a higher recommendation than that):

A tantalising peek at its contents reveals:

"The smartphones in our pockets and computers like brains. The vagaries of game theory and evolutionary biology. Self-replicating moon bases and nuclear weapons. All bear the fingerprints of one remarkable man: John von Neumann.

Born in Budapest at the turn of the century, von Neumann is one of the most influential scientists to have ever lived. His colleagues believed he had the fastest brain on the planet - bar none. He was instrumental in the Manhattan Project and helped formulate the bedrock of Cold War geopolitics and modern economic theory. He created the first ever programmable digital computer. He prophesied the potential of nanotechnology and, from his deathbed, expounded on the limits of brains and computers - and how they might be overcome."

It is also pitched at the general reader (so I didn't have that Stephen Hawkins Brief History of Time, "What does that mean?" - effect here on me).

Audible Book Completed: The Creativity Code by Marcus du Sautoy

Full title - The Creativity Code: How AI Is Learning to Write, Paint and Think, by Marcus di Sautoy (see below, for the sexy artwork that hints at robot domination, without having to show a robot. I listened to it via Audible rather than reading it, but in the end I bought a copy of the book as well, as there were sections in it you really needed to read IMHO - yes, like the ones that mentioned sums I could not do in my head!):

So, now I have finished listening to this .. it seems to be pointing out that we’ve done lots of quirky things, some of which look and feel impressive .. but we seem to be back in a loop, back to 1990 when Expert Systems (symbolic logic machines) were going to going to transform the world. Deep Learning is now the new flavour of the revolution (Artificial Neural Nets that are trained to be clever) .. but back in 1990 it was not Expert Systems that shaped the Commercial World for teh next twenty plus years. No that was the dirty old Database and Networks which transformed into a brand the new thing called the Internet .. the "What Net" are you going fishing somewhere strange? Yet it dictated the course of computing for the next 20+ years by reinventing the Network to be used by everybody and therefore everybody's concern . My personal opinion of course .. which like most things these days seems to be in the Cloud, running better on someone else's piece of tin.

Sad Note to Self -- "Ah Bisto" computing (Googlemail) moment! Finding that pesky unread Googlemail Social email (At last)!

For many years I have had an annoying "1 Unread" email in my Social mail box - like an uninvited guest that does not want to go away. It did not unduly worry me (lie) but occasionally I did find it almost (as in very) annoying. A couple of times I started a manual search but broke off .. because I had a lot more better things to do in my short time left on planet earth!

Then one long dark night (ok, yesterday), I was pondering (as in fuming silently to myself), then a little help tip (I was desperate and types a random series of pleading words into the" Help bar") came to my aid and by using the magical incantation of category:social is:unread in the search bar (and holding a lucky rabbit's foot) .. stop press .. I got it! (see below, you too can search and experiment):

And guess what. Yes. It was a totally unimportant email, from 2017 that was of no use to me, but I will sleep well tonight (in 2022)!

Hoplite Stuff...

While rambling through the Web one day I found this:

"We recreate and analyze historical hoplite warfare including the battle of Leuktra by using the awesome new steam game "Totally Accurate Battle Simulator"! Game Trailer: ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OuKjxAvD6w Alpha Sign-up: http://landfall.se/totally-accurate-b... For documentaries on classical antiquity check out this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list..."

https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/awblog/the-value-of-simulating-ancient-battles/

So I decided to play about ... with a lot of 28mm hoplies and complete a set of Warlord Games 28mm hoplites I had hidden in a box .. the result was a lot of lining up of 28mm hoplites in various formations (see below, Spartan hoplites four deep - seen enfilade):

A bunch of Greek (Spartan) boys in close shield wall self-protection mode (see below, seen head on - one long stretch of contiguous shields to pose and impenetrable wall  - this is the Mortal Gods size of forces, although no peltasts in sight):

All my unpainted hoplites out on the table .. Athens (left) versus Sparta (right), with a few 'soft' slingers and 'peltasts' thrown in on the sides for goes measure - with an Athenian Strategos to the left hand side (see below, sorting out a dispute Ancient Greek style, Athens 4+ deep while Sparta is 3-4 deep):

Now pool all these troops side by side (thinking Platea) and you have a eight rank deep mass of hoplites (see below, which gives a totally different perspective to a line of battle from than a four figure wide stand of hoplites in DBA .. one deep - moving this about is going to be a bit of a pain):

Up close and personal - now that is going to be a very restricted view of the battle (see below, I also feared that they would fall over like dominoes - but they were quite solid and "locked together" - multi poses helping here):

Next steps .. a spray can of primer and a bucket of dipping wash!

Holiday Reading Books: "The Demon in the Machine" and "Upheaval"

Despite my family trying to convert me to the Kindle I still manage to slip in "the hard stuff" trying my best to get the best of both worlds (see below):

I think there is a tenuous common thread of simulation between the two, one is about hidden connections between information and complex systems and the other is weaving a comparison between personal and national moments of crisis ;)

Please Keep Off the Grass

In the computer trade sometimes hype breaks common sense reasoning. Perhaps I too have been guilty of this. Drawn along by the Agile Manifesto I sounded out the mantra of "Move Fast and Break Things Quick". Perhaps I should also remember the simplest and most powerful of mathematical techniques - always view the validity of the inverse argument to see if it is more powerful! So from the lips of the Microsoft President:

Maybe we all can be "Muppets"! Hey those are social media weapons of mass destruction.

IT "Ground Hog Day" .. Hard Drive Failure (again)

Urk!

My stand low-spec "stop gap" Windows 7 laptop from my pre-Christmas crash gave out (probably out of despair with all the BBC Brexit reporting I was reading I was doing) and left me with an empty void. Twice in two months. Despite being 'days' over the warranty the local tradesman honoured the repair out of 'good will' which was much appreciated.

However I took advantage of the post "Xmas/January Sales" and got the family a more up-market Windows 10 beast. This one has moving internal parts - SSD  [Solid State Drive], which also means no CD which is a pity, so another 'hard disk' failure should be unlikely (but not impossible with a family of kids like mine)!

I thus return to the "blogsphere"!

I am back .. Did you miss me?

The curse of the computer struck me down. This time a "motherboard" issue that burnt out, Ho hum, at least I got all my data this time ;)

Microsoft Word 2016 "RANT" [Zoom disabled if Page Movement is set to Side-To-Side] nothing to do with Wargaming .. other than a War on Stupidity!

Update: For a Wargaming Blog this Post is getting an embarrassingly high number of hits (as in people reading it). Methinks they are not the "usual group" of readers. Apologies to those non-wargamings who then decide to prowl around the blog for other useful "IT Tips" and instead bump into Caesar (Life Tip: "Divide and Conquer"), Leonidas ("Molon labe" = Come and get them!) and Marlborough (beloved Corporal John to his troops and "the [only?] Unbeaten Captain)!

Arrrgh!:
I would simply like to state that I would like to get my tiny little hands on the Microsoft Product Owner who championed this new "charming" feature in Word 2016.

FYI: A Word document now has two modes of "Page Movement" Vertical (as the world safely once was) and the new improved "Side-To-Side" (aka the secret new way of disabling the useful "Zoom" function in your document). May I thank that said Product Owner for wasting precious hours of my life in total screen discomfort and utter bemusement, until I Googled [not Bing'ed] the answer (see below):

More "bug" information at:

Apologies for this uninteresting diatribe to my fellow wargamers :(

Normal service will be resumed once I gather up the spilled paint pots and model soldier that are scattered around the room!

Arghh .. Bit Rot

I bought them long ago. I first (with my sensible head on) tried them all to see that they all "worked" then put them back on the shelf for that rainy day when I would need them.

Then that rainy day came and I slipped the CD into the computer and .. nothing, Data .. what data? Sigh. Bit rot?

To be precise I cannot see my Wargames Illustrated CD 3 (The Green One).

Sad face!

The bizarre thing is that I was not searching for an article but for an Old Glory advert which (if my befuddled memory serves me well) showed some 15mm 1815 French Line Infantry. I wanted to use that as a basis of a painting guide. That info I can get from "other" internet image searches however that's not the point.

Instead of "painting" I find myself backing up what I still have on the "old" CDs to an external hard drive to 'make it last longer'. Oh for the cloud in this scenario! There is currently a lot of chunking from my computer's CD Drive to external Hard Drive going on just now!

Online Games .. I gotta hand it to my kids ...

.. they sure know how to play these things. They are fearless little souls who mike-up and play very collaboratively with their class mates from school. Respect. Me I am a silent, dumb "World of Tanks" Tanker who is usually burning five minutes into a battle, peppered by multi-barrelled ordnance from all directions to the disdain of my team-mates. It's all those buttons to press, but which one, I seem to press all mine at the same time and therefore do nothing but become a sitting duck! ..

Anyway I would like to share a wry smile I had as my eleven year old handed the joystick to his younger brother as he took a (long overdue) 'break' from "Plants versus Zombies Garden Warfare 2" game. He was getting "mullered" by his friends and he said to my youngest "Have a go, but don't cry as they will kill you, they are just too good, but go in and just have some fun". Respect as he was sharing and caring. With a broad wide smile and gleam in his eyes my youngest entered the fray with his favourite Zombie character, a bizarre looking Pirate. I expected him to last mere seconds but he remarkably turned the tables on my eldest's tormentors by activating a super-cannon and repeatedly "one-shotting" them. His tiny-little hands were doing something the older boys hands were finding impossible. Turns out they could activate the canon but not fire accurately whereas the tiny terror lined up his shot first then activated for a killer effect ... a useless character to the older kids was a deadly assassin in the younger's hands

:)

I will never forget the amazed "How did he do that?" a befuzzled cry came from the PS4 box. "That's my boy" I thought as the hunters became the hunted. Another inspirational thought, he was not afraid to fail but picked himself up and fearlessly tried new things, just laughing when things got tough! Inspirational.

Maybe I could also be in possession of my World of Tanks secret super weapon :)
