4,000,000+ Hits - But what does it mean?

Shrug ...

Absolutely nothing .. as my guess is that it is mostly Bots. Gawd help the future of AI if it is mining my posts for accurate knowledge. I have a disclaimer at the bottom of my page. I think that mining wargaming blogs for knowledge is the last thing the Tech Giants should be doing! You could be solving real problems like world hunger for teh cost of the compute you meaninglessly burn - no seriously you could!

Meanwhile: To all the humans still out there "Hi, I hope you are well!"

Roll of Honour for "dead" blogs: "Tidying up Blogs I Like to Read" [1]

I was checking the bottom of my "Blogs I Like to Read" list and there seems to be deadwood.
Blogs that are no longer with us (sniff).
Lest they not be forgotten, they served to amuse me, I shall miss their passing.
I honour their digital memory!

What's Going on with the Internet?

Ok so I am back blogging but I cannot understand the statistics (see below, why the spike when I was posting any new stuff?):

So .. I think .. "There is weird stuff going on all over the Internet! Again see my blog's stats. Now remember - given the fact that I really stopped posting - not much in the last six months (from over 100+ posts to less that 20 year) and I have just started posting in earnest again (as a diary without mass interest content). These stats do not reflect interest in my blog but I propose rather a "scraping" of the blog sphere and Internet in general! Where did a 300k viewing audience come from since March - given I only have 243 followers (of which only about an estimated 60 or so I would call actively viewing new posts)!"

OK bloggers - anybody else see this pattern? Is it all those AI Large Language Models (LLMs) trying to get stupidly clever?

Bots - Are we back to normal "hit levels" again?

Last post was only 56 hits after the first 24 hours. Which I think are probably real people! Compared to the thousands previous .. what has changed? Ask the Bots!

Interesting Statistic - Increased Hits? Are these just "Bot Reads" from AI Crawlers?

Hello .. this is interesting .. I have not posted in a while, but the last two of my post were "read" in the mid-hundreds? When I was posting regularly I got less than that (under a hundred reads within the few days of posting) - I thought I had maybe 50 readers from my couple of hundred subscribers. So I am thinking these reads are probably AI Bot Crawlers surfing the Internet and Blog-Sphere, scooping up everything and everything for Gen AI Chatbot Models!

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks for the comments (see in comments tab) I am in agreement with everybody here. The Bots are doing it. Interestingly this post only generated a quarter of the hits the one either side did. Perhaps it was because of the lack of images or are the AI Bots "dissing me"?

And what is the discussion at work this morning: AI Bot Driven Web Crawler activity! It sucks! Two webinars already on the subject. I think you will see some industry kickback soon, as it is useless web traffic. They are generating is obscene amounts of hits - and remember you have to burn power for those those back-end servers. So much for watching your C02 footprint "Big Tech"! "Permission based only" crawlers [maybe even charging the Bots] is probably coming next, along with fines for non-compliance! Money talks!

Taking a Twitter (X) Break

Finally done it. Thought about it for a long time. Then did it. I have deleted what was "Twitter" from my mobile phone (see below, sigh):

Feeling better for not seeing "X" already! (see below, possibly one of the worst changes of icons ever? We all, at least me, still called it Twitter anyway!):

Now more "electronic" time can be spent on Blogging! Less time looking at Gen AI images! If I miss anything import, feel free to tell me ;)

The Conference of Wargamers (CoW) 2024 - Initial Reports (from other Bloggers)

These are the early sightings of Conference of Wargamers (CoW) 2024 reports:

I also need to post my own in due course, but the Games We Play blog covers my War Plan Orange (The Great Pacific War of the 1920's [Hypothetical]).

Question to Fellow Bloggers: What to do About Bot Accounts sending Spam to the Comments Section of Posts?

This is bugging me.

I moderate all comments so I see them coming in. An obvious Spam comments totally unrelated to the Post bit sneaking in a link to an "online gambling site". I click on the ID to see who the person is and it is obviously a Bot account. I click "Report Abuse" and say it is a Spam/Bot giving details. This all takes time. I get a "Thank You" (NoReply) email back from Google. No action seems to be taken though. They still dribble in and I am pretty sure I am seeing teh same accounts being used.

Anyone else suffering from the same scenario?

As I have "Moderation On" in my settings they don't make it through to the public page.

Slowly but surely it will fill blogs with Spam links.

Is there a better way of reporting it to Google?

Wishing you all a (belated) Happy New Year!

Wishing you all a Happy New Year!

My Blogging "New Year's Resolution" seems to be reporting Spammers trying to leave betting website links in the comments sections of one my historical posts to Google.

Frustrating that!

None of them (yet) have got through to be  shown on the Blog as I have set approval before publication wrt comments.

It is a Connected World .. People who look at Geordie's Big Battles .. I spy with my little eye!

People who looked at me in the last seven days ..

Compared with all time ..

Fascinating ..

But that is not to say they have not fooled Google by a clever "jump box" in and out of a 'country' to five a false impression of who is looking.

Painting the Australian Matilda Tank Variants - Reference Point

This had been on my "to do" list for a long, long time. In a way it will be the end of my Matilda project (odyssey), which encompasses BEF 1940 (Arras, also including the\ Matilda I), the 1941-42 "Queen of the Desert" Western Desert 8th Army, Red Russia (snow camouflaged) and finally the Digger Australian Hedgehog, Flamethrower and gun tanks (see below, for current Australian reference points):

Inspirational work (see below, Mini AFV blog):

I found this You Tube video very informative (see below, nice combat and motion pictures, plus CGI reconstruction):

The majority of my Matilda fleet come from the Airfix stables, but I have one ESCI/Italeri and one resin (Britannia Miniatures - I think) addition. There are two Matilda I's metal from the old 20mm Skytrex range (where ever they are now). If I was feeling brave enough I might have a go at the Matilda Scorpion mine clearing AVRE tank.

[Footnote: Sad fact of the Internet and "links" - they can and do change. This post has been so long in the pending state that one of the two original links I had - "expired" by teh time I came to post. So I guess, pictures and words last better than links over time.]

Wing Commander Luddite - Wargaming Content on YouTube

Another example of a Wargamer taking to the Internet airwaves (YouTube) to distribute wargaming content and inspiration (see below, a wargaming friend with a nice artistic touch to his work):

Good stuff, love the basing.

WD's COW 2022 at Shrivenham

To give you a better insight into the event I can do no better than direct you to some excellent bloggers (see below, fellow WD'ers who are also far quicker than me on the keyboard):

Blog Reports:

As you can see there was a fabulous array of games to be had plus you could get up close to some dark armoured denizens (see below, an evil looking T72, not recommended if you are either claustrophobic or like like a sense of "Health and Safety" in your working environment):

The whole event was scarily brilliant!

Why so few posts this year?

I put it down to computer fatigue - the screen and keyboard time associated with work have soared during lock-down. Being a home office working and spending most of my day in front of a computer, the thought of spending extra hours in front of it typing away at a blog simply does not appeal. The social interaction of online gaming is a real buzz though, as well as Virtual Meetings with other wargamers - such as those put on recently by Wargaming Developments. The high light however is the online D&D session that has rumbled on through Covid regardless (see below, a scene from my last "Dungeon Hack" session - the party gets bounced by a 'gang of ghouls' [evil laughter] lead by an "undead" boss monster with .. ooh look ... a dangerous looking 'evil' magic item - so the party's Cleric attacks the undead with "Light Domain - Channel Divinity" ability):

More 'good news' is that I do snip away making things for my hobbies more. For some particular reason the Covid-crisis has inspired me to "put-together" plenty [too many] 28mm WWII (for Chain of Command) figures. I do seem to have organised and assessed the contents of the wargaming attic in meticulous detail - although arranging troops for my own  "big battles" has not been part of this activity. So, credit to all the other bloggers who have kept up such a prestigious rate over Covid and the good news story is that I am getting a few games of the F2F type in too, so I think the tide is a turning for the better.

As for the Dungeon Crawl (see below, spoiler alert, the adventurers were victorious .. sigh .. [as all the undead are now really well and truly, once and for all .. er, dead .. their natural state I suppose], the adventurers may have won this particular battle but the war or rather the quest goes on!):

PS: To all my fellow bloggers out there .. blog on .. I am still reading you .. and enjoying you all tremendously ;)

1,000,000+ of exactly What?

Numbers can mean everything and nothing at the same time. My blog recently passed a mile-stone of sorts but I honestly know not what it means (see below, tell me - what exactly does 1,000,000 blog hits mean to anybody [and I am not looking for self-praise]? Probably absolutely nothing [to quote Bruce Springstein about "War. What is it good for?"]):

I am just impressed that I have 'chundered' away in my own style of ramblings for over ten years documenting "thoughts on", "random interests", "successes in battles" and "failures in battles" - as well as strange "bits of interest" picked up along the way. I am not convinced that a million of anything meaningful has really been recorded of anything, This is not an online store and net-crawling bots are just self serving for their own good. As far as I can make out from passive and active contacts maybe there are between twenty to sixty readers. Most of which I know online and/or F2F. To these fine hobbyists "I salute you!", because I enjoy your work too!

Short Video of the History Of Kriegspiel

As promoted by Rex Brynen on Paxsims and other bloggers such as Murdocks Marauders, here is a nice short YoyTube video describing the development of wargaming:

Not sure that I completely agree with his final Audible book recommendation .. now a word from our sponsors!
