I have been to Heaven (again): Barter Books

When in Alnwick I always try to go to Barter Books. It is the biggest eclectic collection of second hand books I have ever had the pleasure to see. More library than bookstore. You never quite know what to expect as the stock turns over so quickly. So,f you see something you like, you had better get it otherwise (and I have been there) you will regret it. It also helps that it has a lovely cafe in this former railway station, that in itself adds character to the place. The is also a "O Gauge" (or bigger) tainset that rumbles around over your heads [so cool] - in one part of the shop (see below, my favourite sign that translates as "heaven" to me):

Even "just looking" you will find something that you cannot put back on the shelves (see below. what is not to like about early war RN Destroyer Actions in The Phoney War and my inner "WWI Dreadnought Battleship Gunnery" nerd had to get the Barr and Stroud history - they made the ranging instruments for the Grand Fleet amongst other achievements):

As well as the books I got the Barter Books Plastic Bag and infamous Keep Calm and Carry On mug, to replaced the demised previous one I had (see below, the place is quality that gives out bargains - highly recommended):

In the words or Arnold Schwarzenegger "I will be back!"

1/3000 WW2 RN Destroyers bulk basing!

The WWII RN Destroyers get their basing call and proudly get squished together like the good mates they are, or rather the sisters they are (see below, they have been waiting in that box a good few years for this treatment):

These range from early to mid war, where possible (according to budget) I like to get all of the iconic classes like the Tribals.

WWII Naval Book: Atlantic Escorts and HTML5 Browser Bismarck Game

I have a very soft, weak compulsive spot for WWII naval stuff, so when David Manly recommends a "good" book I am a sucker, albeit a happy one (see below, the checklist was easy to complete - naval, WWII, Battle of the Atlantic, RN, escorts .. what is not to like):

And in addition I already had three of David K Brown's books on warship design through the World War eras (to complement my Conway and Janes). In short, as you would expect, when a naval maritime designer recommends a naval constructor's book and says "it is good" then, it is good. One thing to shout out is that it does concentrate on the technical bits. WATU (Western Approaches Tactical Unit) is not mentioned (well not in the index - as I have just started reading it I might come across it yet). The Raspberry, Pineapple, Beta Search, Step Aside tactics are not mentioned.

For more details on these see:

Or see the BBC interactive game:

It "was" a great game but you need Flash 7 (a now deprecated multi-media scripting language) that most modern browsers have moved away from (aka uninstalled and blocked).

Update I: Some Flash games can still be accessed (there are clever people in the world):

Note: I have not (as yet tried this myself)

Update II: HTML5 WWII Games - Addictive ...

"Defenders of the Atlantic" is VERY ADDICTIVE
