Note to Self: Game: Urban Operations - YouTube Walk Through

This is a game I have and so want to "get into". I have it from the first edition, already a second edition is out. I so want to transfer it to tabletop with miniatures (see below, the pedigree of the designer is incredible):

The above YouTube video will be a good starting point.

Interestingly a new game (noy yet attained by myself) but from the same stable of French School of Infantry Combat (three graduates rather than the teacher [Sebastien de Peyret]) called CO-OPS (see below, image and link below):

One to put on the "For the Future" bucket list!

The 2026 Royal Navy - 1/3000 Scale

I am big on WWI and WWII 1/3000 world navies, from anything that could fight in either, so that includes a few pre-dreadnoughts as well as hypothetical (inter-war) ships and WWII-era ships that were never completed (not quite as crazy as the Z-Plan). My interest in moderns was strictly limited to the Falklands 1982 Campaign, a few cold war US/RN/USSR subs and a US Litoral/Carrier Task Force. Looking at the Navwar listing and I saw that the RN 2026 Fleet listing it was "almost" there. There were the Boomers (4 xV-Class SSBN), Destroyers (6 x T45 - Daring Class) and Frigates (7 x T-23 Duke Class) and things that are "close enough" for the minesweepers (5 x Hunt Class). I was missing the CVs (Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales) and the six Astute Attack Subs. For the former a friend printed for me (two) in resin (aka Black Magic spell that summoned out of the "resin goop") and for the latter I cheated as I made do with some older attack subs - they are supposed to be submerged most of the time anyway (see below, metal ships on cardboard bases [un textured and unpainted] - our "new" Grand Fleet of 2026 - I apologize is this sounds rather ironic):

Note: Since the photograph was taken, one T23 has been decommissioned (HMS Richmond) and another is stripped of its weapons and sensors and is classed as inactive (HMS Iron Duke).

If the above picture looked small, what is a lot smaller is [on a random day of asking] the ships that were at sea or ready for sea duties (as in not in refit or repair) - T45 x 1, V-Boat x 1 [continuous nuclear deterrence patrol], T-23 x 2 and  MS x 2 [which I must confess was a guess (40%)]! We seem to have a lot of active admirals and not enough active ships to be honest (see below, the "on-patrol fleet and ready for action fleet" - naturally at the day of asking the CVs must have been "in preparation" for something like an extended cruise):

Ideally we would have one to two of "these" to worry hostile states with (see below, a "RN CV Task Force" consisting of - 1 x CV, 1 x T-23, 1 x T45, 1 x SSN):

Note to Self: I really should try and field Fleet Auxiliaries too, there are not that many either, but that is another resin printer request I think!.

Airfix - F35B Lightning II

Something modern, the F35B Lightning II - RAF/RN flying off the Queen Elizabeth or Prince of Wales aircraft carriers (see below, the plastic has been put together, next grey paint scheme):

It was a bit of a strange modelling experience as you can see that there is such technical complexity in the airframe, there is intricate detailing, but most of the tech stuff is hidden inside a smooth stealth anti-radar shape!

The Three Block War

Once upon a time the professional soldiery side of the West, there was the prevailing thought was that they only ever face the "Three Block War" problem and it was a matter of training (see link below, courtesy of the US Marine Corp):

https://www.mca-marines.org/wp-content/uploads/1999-Jan-The-strategic-corporal-Leadership-in-the-three-block-war.pdf

Then came along the prospect of a peer adversary conflict in a First World setting, and a resurgent Southern Hemisphere "New World Order" to contend with! The times are certainly "a changing"!

Airfix Lightning IIB

I was visiting my local model shop. I really wanted to make a purchase, but I was struggling to find a "pocket money" sized treat for myself. That is an infrequent purchase bouncing around the £10-£20 mark that is not a major purchase. I looked and looked but was about to give up hope. Then I saw an Airfix starter kit of the new RAF (RNAS?)  Lightning IIB that is supposed to be equipping the Royal Navy's  HMS Queen Elizabeth CV and maybe at some time in the future HMS Prince of Wales CV [or just a spare trans-shipping deck?] too (see below. she is a quirky looking bird but like the Typhoon I should really get one and find an unused piece of ceiling to hang it from):

By making a model it always helps you spot and identify a real one in the sky, if it pops up quick out of the blue on a spontaneous fly by!

Map of Ukraine 1943/44: Strategy and Tactics 118 - The Tigers are Burning

Although this is an old S&T Ziplock game from way back when (in 1988, when I had stopped wargaming, RPG's and the like, foolish child that I was, instead my head was full of  busy computer science undergraduate stuff). The territory and the underlying terrain are now all too familiar subject matter for students of the 2022 to 2025+ Russo-Ukrainian "Continuation War" (see below, since 2014 this has been fought over between these two protagonists, before that there was the Second World War, before that the Russian Civil War, before that the First World War, before that the Russo-Turkish War, before that the Crimean War and it goes on and on):

Not sure at all how history will play this one out!

Welcome to the Jungle: Purple Haze - Vietnam Tactical RPG

I was closely watching this game (Purple Haze) , having spotted it a long. long time back and although I did not step in at the Kick Starter phase I joined the fan-base when I pre-ordered it through Zatu Games (after too much sitting on the fence). It is Vietnam, it is very atmospheric, the playing material of of great quality, the mechanisms look very intriguing and apart from the game itself (that looks so good) it meshes with my existing 20mm kit and in the end it was just too good not to get (see below, can you hear the Hendrix guitar rifts and "All along teh Watchtower" kicking off in the background? I can"):

The unboxing took quite a lot of time, this was a very heavy box! Elements of it will also graduate to teh tabletop.

Chessboards that are of a Global Nature: The Important Place of Ukraine has as a Playing Piece

I was fascinated to hear repeated from several sources a comment from a presidential advisor called Zbigniew Brzezinski. He reported to the US President Jimmy Carter in teh 1980's, and stated the importance of Ukraine to Russia. Simply put without Ukraine, Russia cannot call itself an empire, with it, then it can. Ukraine has (or at least had) 40 million people, while Russia 140 million, but Russia desperately wants to claim these 40 million as its own, as well as the strategic importance of the land and sea access (see below, perhaps Brzezinski can shed more light on how Russia and America "really see the rest of the world"):

I will have to read "The Grand Chessboard" the old fashioned way with the Mark One eyeball!

Footnote: The date of paperback publication I am reading was back in 1997, last century. I feel old saying that!

Twilight 2000 or is it really Twilight 2025?

What I have recently acquired having missed it first time round in the 1980's I decided to get the "reboot version" (see below, a seemingly innocuous pile of gaming material seems to be steadily growing):

But anyone reading the news lately can be forgiven for thinking it is more like (see below, an ad-hoc bespoke to the game cover):

We seem to be talking about the same part of the world!

Afghanistan 2006-2007 : 3 Commando's First Tour of Duty

Following on from 3 Para's deployment in the 16th Air Assault Brigade in Afghanistan, 3 Brigade Royal Marine Commandos took their tour of duty in Afghanistan (2006-2007). They had the benefit of digesting hard "lessons learned" from the previous six months tour by the Paras and a lull ("phoney peace") of a Taliban cease-fire as they came "in country". To the commanding officers and staff can be credited as adopting a new strategy, as they had seen the punishment that static defences brought on garrison troops (Forward Operating Bases and District Centres) and planned for a more "manoeuvre orientated" approach, "going too the Taliban", in their backyard and "kicking the hornet's nest". The political pressures from teh Afghanistan government seem to be more controlled and knee-jerk reaction (that plagued the Para deployment), for teh most part seemed to be avoided. The advantage of the offensive mind-set being you do not sandwich yourself between the civilian population and the Taliban, Identification of teh enemy is easier because you are attacking identified strongholds - giving them no rest and unhinging their confidence. The initiative rests with teh attacker. MOGs (Mobile Operation Groups) were the order of the day to support bastion garrison points and the concept of "advance to ambush". This approach did pay dividends. as it was backed with overwhelming air power in an uncontested air space, tremendous firepower could be deployed "away" from danger close (although when "needs must" it can come in, without civilians to think about) to friendly and civilian population centres (see below, the Royal Marines were continually mixing it but importantly" on their terms"):

Again a fascinating read. The destruction wrought on the province of Helmand cannot be escaped and one pities the local inhabitants trying to just live their lives. More "country building projects" were initiated, more active OMLTs (Operational Mentoring Liasson Teams) see Doug Beattie's book [as there was an overlap in deployment], the security or secure region around the hydroelectric dam was extended. The work seemed endless, as at the end of 3 Commando's deployment they dutifully handed over to the 12th Mechanised Brigade (see Patrick Hennessy's book) with the COIN war continuing. The distinction 3 Commando seemed to make was in ensuring they killed the more "serious" Taliban, the better trained Pakistani teams (for example, leaders, mortar and weapons teams) rather than the second tier enforced locals. The Taliban losses were painful, but here religious zeal seems to overtake military professionalism.

Audible Book: Nuclear War A Scenario

Well the title grabs your attention for sure. The theme tune of "Protect and Survive" rings in my ears but this is an American slant, so the melting milk bottles of Sheffield are not mentioned (see Threads, "THE" Nuclear War film). Nevertheless the scientific effects of nuclear hydrogen (H) bombs are chillingly accurate, well researched and repeats successfully what others have already stated, nuclear war is an Armageddon that you don't want to experience  (see below, the mushroom cloud cover will sell the book for sure):

Despite the warnings from history we never seem to earn and we are only happy when we are playing with fire. Annie Jacobsen then spins a scenario to draw the reader into a plausible sequence of events, albeit "unlikely" whereby a nuclear armed minor state (spoiler alert - North Korea) launches an attack on the United States of America .. twice, an ICBM and a submarine launched one. The response (because there may well be a third) is to obliterate North Korea, but because of technology defects on the Russia monitoring satellites they believe (falsely?) that this is an attack on Mother Russia and immediately fall into the "dead-man's hand" counter-strike mentality because they cannot talk to the US President (because he is "unavailable"). The Kremlin-Washington hotline goes very cold. What China would do in response to it meanwhile soaking up radioactivity by the mega-Currie is not deliberated, or India or Pakistan. The decapitation effect of not getting the President of the United States out of Washington in time is though. This is a curious thought experiment of things not going to plan.

I have friends who are sceptical as to the plausibility of the scenario, stating that sixties-to-nineties technologies have been modernised (despite what detractors say of all things Russian) and the kind of mistakes Annie says could happen just don't add up. I do hope so. There is much that does not add up in the real world, but that is my worry. I read it (or rather listened to it) and had that morbid fascination of 'good when finished'. It did feel that Dr Strangelove had undergone a year 2000+ makeover, but highlighted that command elements of the Superpowers are (or could be) stuck in the 1970s.

That's another book read: 3 Para - Afghanistan

It all started for the UK with this deployment, other UK troops had been "in theatre" but now it was ISAF, War on Terror and "nation" rebuilding (with the intention of creating a Western mindset nation, in Afghanistan - that swallowed Alexander the Great, the Colonial British Empire [how many Afghan Wars?] and the post war Soviets .. their Vietnam). Good luck. The British intension was to follow the Malayan "ink blot" counterinsurgency plan, so Afghanistan could "nation build" (using their own troops) but "one political favour" right at the start of the deployment scuppered all this. "Hold this place first with your troops then we will take over with ANA (Army) and ANP (Police)". From that moment on 3 Para were forced into a static "blockhouse holding" strategy which at best was a long drawn out "draw". To quote Frazer from Dad's Army "We're doomed!" The ANA and ANP were woefully under resourced, infiltrated by the Taliban and suffered from corrupt levels of officials - taking the official money for themselves. Then to make matters worse, take a world class elite force (full of offensive spirit) and make them sit tight with bullseye targets on their chests! Everybody knew it was wrong but nobody could see a sensible alternative path forward .. Greek tragedy lived out in the twenty first century (see below, it is a very good read and outlines the actions in subtle matter of fact light and tells a fascinating story of professional soldiering):

It is a harrowing read though, total respect for the boys in 3 Para who were put in all the wrong places, to do a series of tasks that were simply impossible to achieve without destroying the very fabric of society there were trying to nurture. Take for example that Immediate Impact Project for a local hospital, a simple bit of plumbing, it never happened, the washing machine stayed in its original packaging .. as slowly all hell broke loose outside .. sadly, I kid you not. The Paras, 3 Para, showed incredible courage in adversity - "taking it" from the Taliban and then "giving it back" in Spades but under strict rules of engagement (the Taliban free by comparison to do whatever they wished). But after six months - what was it for? The Western political establishment never addressed the endemic corruption at teh core of the Afghan government or understood the Tribal logic or dare I say philosophy, the Afghan way. It was the Afghan Elders who eventually told both sides to stop, the real Afghanistan villagers would not support either of the sides .. they demanded and got a "ceasefire". 3 Para rolled out in this lull and 3 Commando rolled in. No surprises what my next book is then!

Another physical book read: "An Ordinary Soldier" by Doug Beattie - Afghanistan 2006

This certainly was a read from the "sharp end" of Afghanistan combat with a spoiler alert, after surviving and thinking that is it for Captain Beattie he goes back for more (see below, the cover seems to sum up teh combat very well):

Interesting back story of why and how Doug Beattie joined the Army, the hideous hazing he got as a recruit, then sanctuary as he joined up with the Irish Guards and his older brothers, his early career - then Afghanistan. Very emotional in his reflections and understanding of the paradoxes that is Afghanistan in a power vacuum.

Caesar Miniatures - 1/72 Modern US Infantry

In the "box of goodies" in the loft I found two of the excellent Caesar Miniatures sets of modern US figures (see below, Iraq and Afghanistan are covered here):

The sculpting is of an incredibly high standard (see below, certainly for one like me who was used to a variable Airfix standard as a child [of the late seventies and eighties] - the Caesar semi-rigid plastic is very forgiving, not too brittle not to soft):

For a more European (ETO) feel a similar group of figures and poses was found in this set (see below, excellent sculpts):

The basing process has now started, PVA and grit to follow, then prime. I think I will skip the PVA coat (as I think it would cover up too much detail) and rely on generous coat of varnish to hold the figures rigid (see below, a nice little platoon formation):

They should mix well with the old, but still good, Italeri [as in old ESCI mould] US Modern set I have got to the partially painted status!

Thoughts on Urban Operations - Board Game

Is this "the one" for Urban Operations - could be, as the pedigree of  Sebastion de Peyret is first class (see below, does it not look good and sexy, but how do you play it?):

Nuts - Game Publisher Web-Site (currently waiting for a Version 2 printing in 2024, I have the original version 1):

Board Game Geek reference (what do the other folks say about it?):

The box is a collection of magic tricks to me. Excellent reference material, historical and hypothetical (Cold War gone Hot Style), innovative game play, fog of war and realistic decision based (without the benefit of being a 10,000 foot tall general). The pain is sitting down and learning the mechanisms well enough for quick play.
