Buck Up Old Girl!

This Eastern Color  cover for Buck Rogers signed by original Buck artist Dick Calkins shows a classic Buck Rogers dangling from the "U" of his own logo clutching a helpless Wilma Deering. The expressions on their faces are downright precious. I rather like it when artists incorporate the logo into the cover art, but this is one of the weirdest examples I've stumbled across. The perspective is rather screwy as the rocket ship in the background actually just looks little and toylike and not particularly distant. It is brightly colored, that's a plus.

Buck Against The Wall!

Vintage and truly iconic Frank Frazetta on this Eastern Color 1954 Famous Funnies cover as he shows Buck Rogers and Wilma Deering, their backs literally against the wall, bravely facing off against threatening green space ogres, admittedly threatening green space ogres with a very tiny axe. Darn perspective!

On a recent 2009 Dynamite Comics cover by Carlos Rafael pays homage to that classic Frazetta image, and gives the offending aliens a bigger bloodier axe this time. Though for some reason I think of Disney's Tron first when I see Dynamite's particular Buck Rogers. At least he still has the jodhpurs. Sigh.

Here's a better look at Frazetta's classic image.
