Verse And Worse

Random Wit, Errant Rhyme. Not A Literary Crime

In geometry lectures he was so complacent
He got confused with parallel and adjacent
In algebra he floundered at every equation
In first aid he couldn’t dress an abrasion

Plastic Fantastic

Yes, There's Beauty In Mundane Objects Too

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

So why did I take this shot? Not just because there were two crates stacked neatly on top of each other, but because the geometrical aspect appealed to me. What geometry? Look carefully at the shot and you'll see large squares in the mid-frame area, but smaller diamonds in the top and bottom sections.

It also intrigued me that there was a topsy-turvy orange crate in the background, which gave me an interesting counterpoint as far as depth of field was concerned. Just because something's a grey object, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a grey subject as well.

Yes, I know I'm getting into a grey area here ....

Vertical Limit

Time To Make A Blind Guess

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Maybe I paid more attention to geometry during my school days than I realised at the time. I guess that’s why the simplest of sights, such as this, stop me in my tracks.

I shot this during a day in Fremantle, the West Australian port city known simply, in the endearingly abbreviated style beloved by all and sundry in this sunburnt country, as "Freo".

The horizontal blinds had seen better days. So had the vertical segment of the painted window sill. But if I composed a really tight frame, a mundane sight might produce competing colours and contrasting aspects if shot correctly.

That’s the thing with geometry. You can always find the right angle.

Verse And Worse

Random Wit, Errant Rhyme. Not A Literary Crime

Geometry is all about checking every angle
Harmony is all about avoiding every tangle
Algebra is just the art of sorting out equations
Diplomacy is what you use at family occasions

Verse And Worse

Random Wit, Errant Rhyme. Not A Literary Crime

Physics always gets my vote
Geometry gets me into tangles
Euclid somehow gets my goat
But you gotta admire acute angles

I'd like to say a very heartfelt thank you to all of you, as I am now more than halfway to a quarter of a million page views. This week I clocked up my 130,000th page view as well as my 80,000th hit.

And a big vote of thanks to San Merideth for her amazing tribute titled The Physics of Encouragement, which is such a big validation of how I interact with my fellow bloggers, writers and photographers.

Also, a big wave to blog friends who have their own nicknames for me - Daryl who calls me Den Mom; Sandi McBride who calls me Deano, as in Dean Martin and Blog Princess G who calls me Ace Boy Photographer. Most of all, thank you to the gentle, thoughtful teenager who wrote the first-ever comment on my blog. I've never forgotten your kindness ....

Square Route

Biggest Draughts Board I've Ever Seen

Photographs copyright: DAVID McMAHON

While geometry never really held a major fascination for me in school, geometrical shapes certainly catch my eye now that I am a photographer. I shot this picture (above) on Monday and composed the frame so that there was not a hint of what the subject was. The second frame, (below) shows you that it is actually a four-storey protective wrap-around on a construction site. And don't be fooled by the blue sky. It' s still winter here and while the temperature was a mild 12 Celsius, the wind was icy!
