Guinness Tout

At His Beckon Call

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

No, it's not a real publican offering you a glass of Guinness through an open window. This is a first-floor mural painted above the entrance to a popular South Melbourne watering hole called The Palmerston Hotel.

FOOTNOTE: He seems ale and hearty.

Standing Tall

Winter Silhouette On A Sunny Afternoon

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

This shot was taken at lunchtime, for Brian In Oxford, who wanted to see Melbourne in winter. It was a balmy day, about 15 Celsius after a chilly start, and I was lucky enough to capture some beautiful colour down by the Yarra. There was hardly any cloud and plenty of sunshine. Then I suddenly saw this sight on Sturt Street in South Melbourne. The sun was just in the perfect position to give me part of the city skyline in silhouette. Interestingly enough, because of the configuration of the buildings on the left and their relative heights, it gives the shot a slight fisheye effect.

Beyond A Shadow Of Doubt

No, It's Not Really Swede Revenge

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

It might look like some patriotic Swedish gesture, but it's just a wall in South Melbourne. The blue-and-yellow pattern caught my eye about ten days ago. As I pulled over and got out of the car to take this photograph, I noticed the contrast of the shadow across the striking blue of the wall. It also struck me as being unusual that the shadow was so strongly diagonal. The strong colours, the effect of the shadow, and the pattern of the checked netting across the wall just drew me straight in. Just a simple sight, but I reckon it made a photograph with a difference.
