Prawn Star

Don't You Dare Call Me A Shrimp

Photograph copyright: DAVID McMAHON

Sometimes, ya just have to be lucky. About a month ago, I was walking through Federation Square when I saw this prawn walking towards me. Okay, so it wasn't a real prawn, but this is how my thought process went: "Wow, imagine a prawn that size on my barbecue".

Then, a couple of seconds later, my brain, not generally known for dexterity or nimble manoeuvring, suddenly switched into gear and prompted me: "Get your mind off food and concentrate on what you should be doing. Photograph the prawn."

Lucky I take the camera everywhere. I switched it on and shot the first frame a couple of seconds after the giant prawn walked out of one of the entrances.

For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what the person in the costume was carrying in his or her hands, then I realised (and you can see what I mean if you look closely at the first frame) that they were gloves to match the outfit.

Then I realised the photo-op was getting better with each passing second and that there was a frog out on the walkway as well ....

And like all good performers, they both had to subject themselves to a quick once-over from the costume department.

And all of that leads me to the inescapable conclusion that if there were three singing prawns named after Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and the late Luciano Pavarotti, they'd have to call themselves The Three Antennas.
