HG Toys No. 867 Space Wars Playset - Pt 2 Space Station (Flying Saucer) - HP

The complete photo essay for this, with many more photos, was posted recently on 29 July. HG Toys is known for buying the tooling from other companies and then releasing the toys under their label. The top of saucer has the words "STAR STATION" / "X-5" engraved on it and I'm wondering what company and what set could have been the originator for this toy, as HG referred to it as a 'Space Station' not a 'Star Station'? In addition, the retractable ladder is way oversized for the figures included in the set which also leads me to believe the saucer was originally included in a different set with larger figures. Just a guess.

HG Toys No. 867 Space Wars Playset - Pt 1 Box and Contents

Okay folks, right up front, I'm cheating a bit with this next series of posts. How so? Well, I have everything you see in the photos except the box! The box photos were culled off the Internet. I thought it would be appropriate to show as complete and detailed breakdown of the set with what I have, vs. just a couple of cursory photos culled off the Web. Having all the bits and pieces aids in the endeavor to chronicle this vintage toy and provide historical accuracy. With the set number being '867' and with the relatively low piece count, I can only assume that this an earlier (the first?) HG Toys space playset predating their No. 877 Alien Attack Playset and  No. 892 BUCK ROGERS in The 25th Century Galactic Playset. With its contents, it lays the groundwork for those later sets.

As I don't have the box I also don't have the opportunity to photograph all sides of it to see if there's a date listed. Also, as I've just posted a bunch of the pieces in detail during the past few weeks as part of the Buck Rogers playset series, some of the posts for this series will be a bit truncated.

HG Toys Inc Space Shuttle #2 - Copper HP

Well here's the last of my HG Toys Space Shuttles / Space Ships. Again, for no other reason than it helps me keep these straight in my mind, I've designated this one #2. The HG fleet as whole comes only in copper and silver that I'm aware of and there is it at least a darker and lighter variation of the copper ships. Enjoy! Opa Fritz and Oma Bettina

Here's the lighter copper colored HG Toys Space Shuttle / Space Ship, the companion piece to the darker one posted yesterday. Enjoy! Opa Fritz and Oma Bettina

HG Toys Inc Space Shuttle #1 - Dark Copper HP

We haven't really featured much from HG Toys here on the blog and after doing some quick search on fleaBay and the Net I can see why - a lot of their stuff just doesn't float my boat. They had some nice space playsets and toys in the '70s or '80s but that was it, at least for my tastes but over the next several days I'm gonna feature some of their space ships. Now, I look at these things and see how small they are as space ships are concerned and, to me, they look more like a short distance shuttle vs. a more long range vehicle so that's what I'm calling them. I have no reference books where these appear in, no catalogs, nothing - bupkis! - so have no clue what HG Toys would have called them (I'll bet they called them 'space ships' but I'm stickin' with shuttle).

These ships came in copper and silver and most of my copper ones are the same shade - except this one. This particular specimen is noticeably darker than the others and you'll be able to see the difference in succeeding posts. This measures 3 1/2" (8.89cm) L x 3 1/8" (7.93cm) wingspan x 1 1/4" (3.17cm) H. Enjoy!

Just a few weeks ago on June 11, I posted a silver HG Toys Shuttle which I refer as #2 and this type here today is #1. Yeah, I know, things got a bit turned around but what can I say, welcome to Opa Fritz's world :-)
