BMC #40013 Iwo Jima Playset (2000)

Hmmm, kinda looks like I'm getting in the mood for BMC! In the past I've posted a good deal of BMC (and their successor Americana) American Civil War and Alamo playsets and figures, but until recently haven't even touched my WWII stuff. Looks like another expedition of rediscovery out to The Cave is in order!

Here's a BMC set that was released in 2010 (the same year I started the blog), then I ended up blogging it in 2013. Unfortunately, back then I didn't do near as complete photo coverage as I do now so these are the only photos I have of the set. Since then, I've sold this set as well as nearly all my other Pacific Theater of War (ETO) toys, preferring to concentrate on the European Theater (ETO) toys. Hopefully I'll be able to photograph more of my BMC WWII stuff in the weeks and months to come.

King & Country 54mm Sands of Iwo Jima - Diorama Base

We're capping off our look at King & Country's Sands of Iwo Jima set by posting the diorama base made to display the figures. We'll also take a look at BMC's Iwo Jima playset with its plastic reproduction base.

The K&C base is made out of a dense foam of the type that would be poured into a mold and allowed to set up. The details embedded in the base are awesome, from bunkers to destroyed Jeeps there's a wealth of detail. The base itself is only about 18" square and you would be hard pressed to display all the figures made for this series. Iwo Jima is a volcanic island and is characterized by it's grey/black sand which is aptly represented here. Enjoy! Opa Fritz and Oma Bettina

BMC Iwo Jima Playset

The BMC Iwo Jima playset features a plastic reproduction of the K&C diorama base. It was molded in two pieces joined together in the middle and the mountain has a top piece (which is missing from my K&C original). Atop that would be displayed the iconic raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi based on the famous Joe Rosenthal photo from February 23, 1945. The K&C version of the flag raising would be prohibitively expensive for me so the BMC version was just fine. I sold the K&C base and the BMC set some time ago in order to concentrate on European Theater of Operations (ETO) toys. The figures are next to go!

I sold the BMC set and kept the figures sealed in their original bags so there are no photographs of the entire set-up

King & Country 54mm Sands of Iwo Jima - Japanese Prone Firing Rifle

Yesterday we featured the last Marine I have in my set of King & Country's 54mm Sands of Iwo Jima series, and today is the last Japanese figure. I only have six Japanese figure but K&C made more. Tomorrow we'll look at the diorama base issued for this set. Enjoy! Opa Fritz and Oma Bettina
