Britains DSG 54mm English Lancers #2
While this figure may beg for snarkiness, that overturned wash pail on this guys head was a thing at one time. Called the Crusader Helmet, Great Helm, Bucket Helm, or Barrel Helm its simplest form is the one seen here on this figure. A flat-topped cylinder plopped on the head with only a couple of slits for the eyes. It was in use from the late 12th century to the 15th century. This figure from Britains DSG appears to be a modification of the lancer wearing the skull cap (Lancer #1 featured yesterday) as all other parts of the casting are identical save for the helmet. Britains DSG 54mm English Lancers #1
This next set of Britains DSG Medieval figures I bought was called "English Lancers" but one of the six figures is actually a swordsman. Four of the lancers wear what I believe is a skull cap type helmet called a cervelliere with chain mail protection extending from the bottom rim. This evolved into the Bascinet type helmet in which the armor itself extended downward from the back and side and had a more pointy top and came in many styles through the Medieval period. The lone warrior who looks like he's wearing an overturned garbage pail on his head is wearing a Crusader Helmet which also came in a variety of styles. In regards to the swordsman, it was pointed out in one of the hobby groups I'm in that he's holding the the sword in his left hand making him a south paw (aka lefty, left handed person) and his scabbard - which has another sword in it - is also on his left side. Left handed swordsmen would have their scabbards on their right side! Soooo, maybe our intrepid warrior is ambidextrous?? Just saying. Enjoy! Opa Fritz and Oma Bettina
