Lido Space Car - Silver HP

From the 'Forgotten Files' archive comes this silver hard plastic Space/Race/Futuristic car from Lido. We last posted one of these in blue SP back on Dec 22, 2012 and apparently this was to follow next because these pics were taken in January of 2013 but somehow they got overlooked. Renwal #88 Speed King Racer

Renwal was a major American toy manufacturer of plastic toys and model kits and I certainly remember building a plethora of their kits as a youngin'. Today's toy is the #88 Speed King Racer which measures 4 3/4" (12.1cm) L x 1 3/4" (4.4cm) W x 1 1/4" (3.2cm) H manufactured from 1949-54. There were two plastic versions of the Speed King, a short one measuring 3 1/4" long having the number '6' molded on the top of the hood, and this larger version both of which are styled after land speed record type cars of the period. Like many toys of the time the car was offered in a variety of bright, playful colors. Mine does have some minor condition issues but as these are quite popular and command higher prices than I'm willing to pay for mint examples that's quite alright by me. Many eBay sellers tend to identify these as 'space cars' and with their sleek styling they do in fact look good next to spaceships of the time. Take a look at the last photos and decide for yourself. Goodee Products Space Car / Race Car

Here's a tiny delight from the early '50s from Goodee Products of New Brunswick, New Jersey. I have seen this car in a Goodee Products Service Station #8000 set from 1953 so we know it dates to at least then. The trouble is, everything I know about Goodee I just told you :-(  I have absolutely no reference books on die cast toys and when you try to do a Google search, it keeps changing the spelling from 'Goodee' to 'Goody' and brings up info on some hair accessories company!!!  When these come up for auction on eBay they are sometimes referred to as space cars and sometimes as race cars or salt flat racers. Personally, I'm inclined to believe these were racers and not space cars but we'll leave that up to your imagination. At 3" (7.6cm) long the cars are small and look at home alongside TootsieToy die cast toys. My car is an orange color but I've seen them in yellow and green so most likely they were available in a wide range of colors. Enjoy The Berg's :)
