Notes: The semi-famous show from the Manning Bowl, one of the summer warm up shows for the Done With Mirrors tour which would formally start in January. Seems like a wild crowd here, Tyler admonishing fights in the crowd. Interestingly there is a version of "The Movie" played here before "Same Old Song And Dance," I believe the only known live version. Also "All Your Love " is played, a semi-rarity. The quality here is dicey. You'd think the open air venue would help the sound, but too often it is muffled and uneven, but not altogether unlistenable. I did get this from the dude who recorded it and it's the only audio source I know of, so this is as good as it gets, if that is any solace. There is also about 60 minutes of rough video that was broadcast on local V-66 that exists. Here is some remberence of the show I found on the net....

"In 1985, Aerosmith played a show at The Manning Bowl in Lynn, Massachusetts with Foghat and another Boston band, Farenheit. It was Joe Perry’s birthday. About 20 of us made the trek to Lynn that day. It was a typical, hot, Indian Summer day in New England - perfect for a beer-filled, outdoor show. However, none of us were prepared for the scene when we arrived at the Bowl.
The 20,000-seat, football field was overrun with people, a lot of them bikers and local Lynn thug-types. There was an especially large showing from one of the local motorcycle gangs, called the Rumpot. When Aerosmith finally hit the stage, a couple of 1/2-naked metal chicks decided to push beyond a thick row of bikers. About two minutes later, one of them was dragged back by her hair, covered in blood by the biggest biker I have never wanted to see in my life.
The crowd, hot and agitated by Foghat’s way-too-long set, was surging forward toward the stage. People were being dragged over the stage barrier in various stages of injury and unconsciousness. Nobody was sitting in the stands, and the crowd of about 20,000 were all on the field. I’ll never forget the look of fear on Tyler’s face as he implored the crowd to move back or they would have to stop playing. This rationale only made the crowd angrier and Tyler and the bad boys from Boston pulled the plug after about an hour or so after taking the stage."

Pink Floyd: Chicago 1972 (Ex Aud Remaster) Pre-Studio DSOTM!

1
Auditorium Theatre, Chicago, IL
1972-04-28
A 'Hogweeds' remaster
Many thanks to Doinker for uploading this marvellous 'Dark Side' performance. It is a huge sonic improvement on the original Harvested release (RevA includes the entire concert).
In listening I thought there were a few things in the recording I wanted to adjust for myself, including:
i) A stereo image consistently off to the left, which I found distracting, especially on headphones.
It probably reflects the positioning of the taper within the hall. I reckon he was seated to the left side, close to the stage. Thus he would naturally have swivelled slightly right to face the stage. When he did, he'd have the audience around him and in front, but more weighted to the right. He'd also have the closest main speaker stacks above his left side, and the Floyd's surround-sound stacks behind and to the right. I think he aimed his stereo mic towards the visual focus, the stage, and thus captured the left-dominant stereo field we hear on this recording.
Changing this is an aesthetic matter. The taper's positioning was not ideal, and no adjustment will make it so. However by simply shifting the phase alignment of the channels, I have duplicated what this recording would have sounded like if the taper had pointed his mic at the acoustic focus, the primary speaker stacks, and captured the music stereo centre. It does shift the audience a bit off to the right, and some of the multi-channel speakers too, but for me, this actually brings out the 'surround' feel of the tape effects a little better. You can certainly discern the tape effects from what comes from the musicians play on stage (eg: Speak to Me)
Note also at the end of 'Money', when (I'm guessing) it sounds as though the front PA dies, leaving audio coming from the stage itself and the surround stacks.
ii) Balancing the equalisation to lift the lower frequencies, adding 'body' to the sound and a bit more punch in the bass.
iii) Repairing numerous small dropouts, and some larger glitches. No critique of Doinker, who may have corrected even worse problems (and said 'hopefully all done'), but there were quite a few in 'Breathe' and from 'Brain Damage' on, including some bad clunks in 'Eclipse'.
Superb DSOTM from Low-Gen Reel to Reel 16 bit
This is perhaps the nicest early performance this guy has ever had the pleasure to hear. As I think this tops both the Hollywood Bowl and Rainbow concerts from the same year, why do I say that? This show is so good it makes you float. The boys are relaxed and into it - I mean *really* into it, and it shows from beginning to end. The recording is also almost as good as it gets for an audience tape.

Fighting Back At the Coliseum (Empress Valley), The New Faces (Jelly Roll) & Trampled Underwood (IQ)
Jelly Roll is a single source. This source didn't capture the full show. IQ used a second source to complete the first tape. For the original source shared between JR and IQ, they are identical.
Empress Valley's release uses the tape by Jelly Roll and completes the show by using the other tape too. Furthermore, it may a third tape for even more completion, but it may not be from the same night. The many changes between the first two sources and the rest of the sound changes make it difficult to determine exactly when actual source changing occurs. For the main tape shared between the three titles, EV's tape is much louder with less background noise. It certainly must be from a better generation of tape. JR and IQ are similar in sound.

Jethro Tull: Upper Darby 1987 (Ex FM Source) FLAC

uperdarbyf
UPPER DARBY, PENNSYLVANIA: November 25,1987 Improved Version
Recorded on a reel-to-reel live from WMMR-FM
This is a new and improved version of the commercial boot Upper Darby 1987. This is from a live FM broadcast directly onto a reel to reel. The masters for this vine were supposedly taken directly from the reel to reel tape-sounds like it.

Reconstruction (including Jerry Garcia): Rheem Theater 1979 (Soundboard) FLAC

JersMusician
Reconstruction was a band formed by John Kahn to occupy him while Jerry Garcia, his long-time musical collaborator, was busy with the Grateful Dead. The band's original guitar player was Jerry Miller, best-known for performing with Moby Grape. Garcia, who wanted to play in a jazz band, replaced Miller in 1979.

Reconstruction performed only for an eight-month period in 1979. The band's first performance was January 30, 1979 at the Keystone in Berkeley, California. Its last performance was on September 22, 1979, at the Keystone in Palo Alto, California. During that period, the band played 57 concerts, all of them in California and Colorado.
The band's lineup consisted of:
Jerry Garcia - guitar, vocals
John Kahn - bass
Merl Saunders - keyboards, vocals
Ed Neumeister - trombone
Ron Stallings - tenor saxophone, vocals
Gaylord Birch - drums

Aerosmith: Ventura County Fairgrounds 1983 *Tyler Very Drunk/Stoned* (VG Aud) FLAC

Toys in the Attic

Notes: Man, what to say about this...you have to hear it to believe it. Oddly, the dude who sent it to me just had it listed as: Ventura 8-3-83 50m, no mentioned of the chaos here. I sent a copy of this show to an esteemed professor pal who wrote these notes...

"Hey, J-J-Jaded!" Let's face it: twenty-first century middle-America loves Aerosmith. Today, the Toxic Twins are clean and lead a great rock (if not corporate) band that plays to sold out houses across the nation. But we shouldn't let today's sleek edition obscure the tightrope which Aerosmith walked and sometimes fell off of during its 1979-1984 period. In particular, this 1983 Rock in a Hard Place show illuminates how erraticially Aerosmith could perform in those days thanks to a steady diet of drugs and booze. To be fair, only Tyler embarrasses himself here, and the band of Crespo, Dufay, Hamilton, and Kramer try to save him from himself by singing for him when he doesn't (No More No More) and by starting songs (Three Mile Smile) or starting solos (Sweet Emotion) when he rambles incoherently, but there efforts are all for naught. Early in the show, a blitzed Tyler tells the California crowd that "I gotta act drunk, otherwise if I don't, I'll get blamed for being something I wasn't." Um, try again, Steven. You are drunk, at minimum, who knows what was in his bloodstream this night.

Other hilarious Tylerisms:

- "California has been our new home ever since Boston, you all know that, doncha? Well doncha!. . . So when we play here they don't know when we're playing here, back there, anyway...."
- "This song ['Big Ten Inch Record'] happens to be one of [legendary rock promoter] Billy Graham's motherfucking favorite songs. I heard him tell me that last night when I whoomped his a$$ at ping-pong!"
- "I ain't gonna f^ck up on any words tonight," just prior to inventing indecipherable but undeniably unrecognizable lyrics to 'No More No More.'"
- "[You all are saying] what the f^ck is wrong with Tyler tonight? He's f^ckin' so stoned, he can't do sh^t. Well, what would you do . . . if you had six inches, had six inches [of blow? smack?] My dick is bigger than six inches!"
- "We ain't like women, you know. Women can cum anytime they want. Boys, you know, it's a two-bit shuffle, you know, doin' it?"

Mercifully, someone in the band makes the executive decision to cut about six songs from the setlist and the show ends after fifty minutes. Tyler departs with a charming "Good night, motherf^ckers!" The night before, the band played ninety minutes in Sacramento as headliners with Dio as opener. The crowd reacts to Aerosmith's early departure with a hail of obscenities and jeers, such as "Come on you f^cking a$$holes! F^cking I want my money back! F^ck you!" In sum, the performance here is so bad it is good. Scratch that, it is pure Aerosmithian genius. So let's take Tyler's 2004 advice: "Ladies and Gentlemen, Step Right Up! Let's go see the Elephant!"

Quicksilver Messenger Service: Earliest Known Soundboard Recording 1966 (FLAC)

Matrix poster
This may be the earliest known live performance of the Quicksilver Messenger Service. It does not appear to be circulating. I transferred it from a cheap 1980s cassette which was labeled as The Matrix, SF, mid '66. I was able to find information on the Internet which narrows the date down to August 9-10, 1966. I don't know which date this is, and there are several cuts in the tape, so it could be from both dates. Since there are no duplicate songs, I assume it's all from one night, possibly multiple sets.
Interesting to me, and possibly confirming this as an early show, are the lyrics to track 14. "Hair Like Sunshine" is on several other Quicksilver recordings, but on this one, the lyrics are completely different for the first part of the song: no Hair Like Sunshine, for example. The second part of the song is as usual. Track 2 is also unique as far as I know, and I'm not sure of the title. The source tape had tracks 7-16 as Side A and tracks 1-6 as Side B but I switched them; seems more correct with the incomplete Mona at the end. Tracks 1-6 sound slightly better too.

Recording quality is listenable but not great. This is a very primitive stereo soundboard tape.

Total time (SBD w.Aud patches) 148.33 min

Notes:
The largest part of Montana {0:00-4:12} sounds very weak originally, especially in the right channel.
I had to increase its volume there by 25% and additionally mix 20% of the left channel to the right, to make this part sound a bit fuller,
still perceivably muffled and hissy, compared to the rest.
An untouched version of Montana is available in separate subfolder, see below.

The overlap portion around the FOB drum solo tape change point (at 16:50), cut out in main section, is also available in that separate subfolder.

Also included, for single source purists and editors,
a bonus subfolder (63,4 MB) with these untouched tracks or portions:

01 Band Introductions (unpatched portion from beginning) [0:34]
11 Montana (untouched) [6:03]
14 Farther O'Blivion drum solo, overlap portion around tape change [2:37]

Total time (SBD source only) 118.43 min

credits:
thanks to Lagz and Drew51 for providing a raw and low gen copy of the SBD version.
thanks to the unknown Aud source taper
thanks to Murry and FlyingToAdel for the Aud tapes
and to Overnitefreak for seeding the Aud version.

Elvis Presley: A Holy Rockin' Christmas FLAC

holyroc
Another very nice collection of alternate Christmas tracks from the King - well most of them are Christmas tracks. On this one you also get the full, unadulterated recording of Don't Think Twice - all 14 minutes 25 seconds of it and unfortunately two versions of the dire I've Got Confidence but you can always plug your ears so you don't have to listen to it.
Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year everyone.

Remastering notes (from MOB): The rough recording was already very good, but needed some restoration and cleaning before being spread worldwide. Indeed, due to the age of the mastertape, a lot of crackles, tape warble and level fluctuations were present on the rough digital transfer.
These have been manually cleaned as much as possible. Also, the rough version had a lot of clipping that needed to be corrected. Some frequencies with musical content were buried in the original transfer, therefore a slight EQ was applied in order to bring clarity to the recording. There were some abrupt cuts on the mastertape (two cuts during Breathe, one cut at the beginning of Us And Them and one cut in the middle of OOTD, not to mention numerous "pause" operations by the taper during some tunings and applause between songs).
These have been restored by editing, so that the recording is now presented in a continuous way, with smooth transitions.

Notes by PE:
Almost like David Vincent, it all started with a torrent which had attracted my attention : Gong 1973-06-19, a gig at Roger Salengro's salle - Lille, France, chez les ch'tis. Contact was made with the seeder (Sous-Marin) who turned out to be the taper of this show. Sewing up, and after a few [sexual favors] I learned that he had recorded the Campus radio show AM original broadcast (1970) : Pink Floyd 1970-01-23 at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées.
I therefore encouraged him to torrent this recording. Then, on his website, I saw a date which intrigued me : Pink Floyd 1972-07-12,Lille. .... Lille? le pays des ch'tis œuf course ! but as far as I knew no recording of this particular gig were reported !...
With this new contact we discussed via emails until I learned that the taper (named ZEF) actually taped this gig and that SousMarin owns a mp3/128Kbits recording of this show.
Then began the quest for the "lossless" source of this recording... Days passing, a lot of [sexual favors] again and weeks later, an email just arrived, ZEF replied to Sous-Marin: I had a small tape recorder, the later Telefunken (R.I.P blessed tape recorder)connected to an external microphone. I digitalized the tape with Audacity (version 1.2.6) using default settings. Audacity detected my recording as being in mono. I did not correct the file or apply any filters. This was a "rough" transfer direct from tape to HD.

Bingo! we finally got it:)
