Pink Floyd: Reeling on Pink Floyd #24 1970 (EX+ Audience) shn

268714
'Reeling On Pink Floyd' - Tape 24
Altes Casino
Montreux, Switzerland
November 21st 1970
Source: Audience
Sound Quality: EX/EX+
Lineage: Claimed Master Reel > DAT(0)@48khz > WAV@48khz > SHN@48khz
Total time = 142:24m (has 20 seconds of silence so actual timing is around 142m)
art from other bootlegs of the same show included

all in one big SHN file
1. Astronomy Domine
2. Fat Old Sun
3. Cymbaline
4. Atom Heart Mother
5. The Embryo
6. Green Is The Colour
7. Careful With That Axe, Eugene
8. Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
9. A Saucerful Of Secrets
10. Interstellar Overdrive cut

Amazing. I was impressed with the 4th generation, but this one is just THE version. No hiss, no turbulences, no speed issues, and glorious bright sound. Still some dropouts but that seems native to the recording at this point. Claimed master reel, I dont have any info to say they're right or wrong. In any case, it's much lower generation than the 4th generation for sure. IO still cuts out at the very end but I think this one has some more seconds. Instant upgrade.
This was taken from the 'Reeling on Pink Floyd' DVD set weeded on the Floyd Artifacts mailing list, so all credits to them. And whoever put this megaset out there, a big THANK YOU!

Led Zeppelin: The End of the Marathon 1975 (EX Millard Audience Master) shn

THE END OF THE MARATHON - L.A. 3-27-75 - FRONT
no label
3 cd
The Forum
Inglewood,California
March 27, 1975
Superior audience recording
This is the infamous last show of the 1975 North American Tour with Linda Lovelace introducing the band. The lineage I have on this source is mentioned below.
This audience source sounds great and should be a great addition to any Zeppelin collection. Enjoy!
1st gen from Millard Master plus alternate
source used to fill in the gaps.
Millard Master > DAT > WAVE > SHN
Alternate source - unknown gen.
One man who did probably more than anyone else, and whose efforts have left us with some superb sounding recordings, is the late Mike Millard, the taper behind the best sounding audience recordings of Led Zeppelin. The shows he taped (with the best version on CD named after each show) are as follows:-
Long Beach Arena, 11 March 1975. 3CD "CALIFORNIA GRAFFITI " (Masterport).
Long Beach Arena, 12 March 1975. Only the last part of the show was recorded by Mike Millard, and can be found on "LONG BEACH ARENA FRAGMENT" (Holy). It is understood that he had a car accident on the way to the venue, and was considerably delayed.
LA Forum, 24 March 1975. 3CD "DEEP THROAT I" (Empress Valley).
LA Forum, 25 Forum March 1975. 3CD "DEEP THROAT II " (Empress Valley).
LA Forum, 27 March 1975. 3CD "DEEP THROAT III " (Empress Valley).
San Diego Sports Coliseum, 19 June 1977. 3CD "MYSTERY TRAIN " (Badgeholders).
LA Forum, 21 June 1977. 3CD "WATCH AND LISTEN TO THIS EDDIE" (Genuine Masters).
LA Forum, 23 June 1977. 3CD "FOR BADGEHOLDERS ONLY" (Tarantura). Millard's tape is incomplete (he accidentally left the pause button switched on at the start of the concert) and his recording can be found on 3CD "FOR BADGE HOLDERS ONLY" (Balboa).
LA Forum, 25 June 1977. 3CD "DELIRIUM TREATMENT " (Tarantura).
LA Forum, 27 June 1977. 4CD "DEEP STRIKER" (Empress Valley).
Millard used a wheelchair for a recording prop. His taping equipment was a Nakamichi stereo cassette deck and AKG microphones. Various transfers from his masters were done over the years. Often the 1st generation copies would be slightly sabotaged by Millard. This was done by him to see who traded each version of his master. For example, low recording levels on the VHS copies or a few cuts here and there. Sadly Millard, during his depression, destroyed most of his masters, certainly all the Led Zeppelin ones. Tragically he committed suicide in 1990, but his family still own all the masters. The shows that he captured on tape and saved for posterity are among the best ever concerts Led Zeppelin performed. He recorded a number of other famous bands such as Pink Floyd, Yes, and the Rolling Stones.

Notes from original poster:
This came to me in trade in 1994; I can't prove the lineage although it was represented to me as a 2nd gen. from the soundboard. It sounds as though it comes from the pro shot video source; whether the generation is counted as being from the original video master or whatever source tape was used down the line. In any case, it is a low generation recording -- the fidelity is pretty good and there is minimal tape hiss. There is more crowd than one typically hears in a board tape, but I think the crowd was miked pretty loudly.
This show happened at what I think is the peak of the post-Moon era; the performance is great and the band are in great spirits. The show sold out so quickly that the show was broadcast via closed-circuit to movie theaters throughout the Chicago area; Roger, Pete, and John occasionally shout out to the various suburbs with funny comments. I think the heavy crowd miking was for the benefit of the remote audiences to create more a "live" feel.
I burned this onto audio-grade CDRs with a stand-alone CD burner, then used Magix Audio Cleaning Lab to break up the tracks and apply light dehissing. No further processing was done.
Enjoy!

This is the Steely Dan Orchestra at their finest, they are really tight - blending from one tune to the next seamlessly at times. The filler, I believe, includes the tunes that closed the Saratoga show had it only been preserved, because there's no way the closed with Peg.

Enjoy!

Genesis: Live in Groningen 1975 (Soundboard) FLAC

by request!
GEN750410TM inlay
Martinihal-Centrum
April 10, 1975
Transferred from the original master soundboard tape
(open-air-microphone recording).
CEDAR Cambridge restoration, mastering and cover design by tom 2008.

The master tape was played back on a STUDER A721 three-head dual capstan professional machine (120 µs - ’normal’ setting, tape head azimuth manually aligned), directly connected to a Prism Sound 24 bit A/D converter which fed the digital output to be recorded by the Cedar Cambridge 5 in 24 bit 44.1 KHz onto hard drive.
This remaster used the same 24 bit source that was used for GASP 17. Two snippets from other shows were used to fill the missing intro of the title track and the tape-flip-gap between Lamia and Waiting Room.

A TM Production.

Shamrock Records' CD > CDR > EAC > Cool Edit Pro 1.2a > CDWav > SHN (MKW)
Numberous pops and glitches were removed with CEP. Discs were re-indexed using CDWav at (slightly) different points in comparison to the original indices. In the Rehearsal discs, some tracks were faded in/out for a smoother transition, for the
original discs had abrupt transitions and pops. Static noise were removed in few places. I adjusted the amplitude of R/L signal because the L channel was much louder.
No other processing or EQ have been applied.
The recording is distorted slightly (rehearsal is distorted much more), as if the signal is too hot. (Nice square waves! in many places :) oh well.....

This is the version that originated with JN from his 1st gen tape, to which he applied some mild NR resulting in high frequency drop off beginning at about 18 K. Despite this, the sound quality is still very good; also, it may well be that without the NR it would sound worse; this can't be determined until if and when the unaltered version comes to light. This is NOT the MP3 version available previously.

Track 2&4 - Live At 'Beat Club' - German TV, 1970-05-25
Recorded live in the studio in Germany's now legendary Radio Bremen studios on May 25th, 1970, this session aired on Episode #55 of The Beat Club on May 30th. It is the earliest video that we currently have of the band performing live. This live-in-the studio rendition of Black Sabbath begins with the same rain and church bells intro that opens their debut album. This is a slow, plodding and primal reading of the song, but it's raw and dangerous sounding. The real treat here is getting to see the boys so early on in their careers! Next, they launch into a high-octane version of the Carl Perkins rock and roll staple Blue Suede Shoes with an intensity that is in complete contrast to the song they played before. Ozzy sings in the characteristically nasal tone that he had during this period, while Iommi spews out a spiraling guitar solo over the frantic shuffle beat. This is the only recorded version of Sabbath playing this song. The band didn't intend for this soundcheck recording to air, but the producers thought it was worthy of the program.
Track 1 & 3 - Live At 'Beat Club' - German TV, 1970-09-26
These tracks are taken from the audio portion of their 2nd appearance on German music program 'Beat Club episode #59'. This was shortly after the release of the PARANOID album. Sabbath performed live on this TV soundstage with loaned equipment, leaving many viewers to believe that the band really used Orange amps! The new equipment may be at least some of the reason that the band isn't sounding as stunning as usual. Tony's guitar goes slightly out of tune during Iron Man and he seems to be generally going through the motions to make this one work. Ozzy completely messes up the first two verses and ends up inverting and reusing several earlier lines from the song.

The Wh?: Spectrum 1973 (Soundboard) FLAC

who_spectrum
Venue: Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA.USA
Date: 1973-12-04
Source: SBD -> ? -> CD -> EAC -> FLAC
This is sourced from Japanese double CD.
Of all the shows on The Who’s legendary Quardrophenia tour in 1973, none stands out more than the penultimate show in Philadelphia on December 4th. Parts of this show were broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour and titles surfaced almost immediately taped directly from the radio broadcast. The first is the famous Tales From The Who (TMOQ) which featured one of William Stout’s most well known covers featuring the band in cages a la a box of animal crackers cookies. This release was copied on Who Are You (Ruthless Rhymes), copy of the TMQ release with five songs from a 1971 audience recording. The Ruthless Rhymes release was copied on the German release Mods & Rockers (Ruthless Rhymes) and on another German title called Mods & Rockers (Slipped Disc) in 1974.

The final vinyl release was Decidedly Belated Response (TAKRL). The very first Who release featured this broadcast on Tales From The Who (Great Dane) and American Tour 1973(Swingin’ Pig) both in 1989. These releases had only ”The Real Me,” “Bell Boy,” “Doctor Jimmy,” “I Can’t Explain,” “Summertime Blues,” “My Generation,” “Pinball Wizard,” “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” in upgraded sound quality. This new release contains the recently surfaced, more complete version of the Sepectrum show for the first time ever. “Substitute,” “The Punk And The Godfather,” “5:15,” “Drowned,” “Naked Eye” are new to on this release with only “Love, Reign O’er Me” being the only song missing from the setlist.

The sound quality on this release is nothing short of phenomenal. Given the phenomenal performance, this is simply a fantastic release. The set begins with a few older numbers to warm up the audience. After a moment of audience buzz the band launch into “Substitute” and “I Can’t Explain.” After their cover of Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues” Daltrey says, “Thank you Philly. Here’s a song featuring a geezer whose done a lot on his own, an awful lot with the Who, John Entwistle.” After a blistering seven minute version of “My Wife” Daltrey explains, ”I think of all the cities in America apart from New York and Detroit, Philly was the first to hear this one from the horrible Who. MY GENERATION!” The middle part of the show is taken up with their latest magnum opus, the songs from the new album Quadrophenia.

Pete Townsend begins the narrative by explaining, ”Now we’d like to play for you the better part of an album. what we wrote about something that is very dear to us when we were little. it’s a story about a mod kid and we call it Quadrophenia, since there are four of us. It’s sort of an in joke. Being mod meant a lot more in England than it ever did in America. I think you think of it as a Carnaby Street bullshit thing. And it’s not just a looking back, but a bringing up to date. Quadrophenia is about where we are today and maybe you too. The story is set on a rock in the middle of a stormy sea. Quadraphonic, of course. The story of Jimmy.”

The whooses of the wave and sea fill the speakers during the “I Am The Sea” as a prelude before the raging fury of “The Real Me” and the great “The Punk And The Godfather.” Afterwards Townsend gives a lengthy introduction, saying, “The next song is a song called ‘I Am One’ that I sing. And it’s all about the way I felt, because I wrote it.” Someone in the front row shouts, “Mr. Peter Townsend!!” “Yea thank you. When I was an effer, I used to feel that the guitar was all I had. I could have been right of course. I wasn’t tough enough to be a member of the gang, not good looking enough to be in with the birds, not clever enough to make it at school, not good enough with the feet to make it at football player. I was a fucking loser. And I think everybody feels that way at some point. Somehow being a mod, even though I was too old to be a mod, Jimmy the hero of the story is thinking he doesn’t have much going for himself, but at least he’s one.” This song, which some call a sequel to “Behind Blue Eyes” is very pretty and emotional but unfortunately is the shortest song played in the Quadrophenia set, clocking in at two and a half minutes and seems to end right after it begins.

Daltrey continues the narration by saying, “England is about twice the size of Philly, so you’re never far from the sea…he gets on the 5:15!” The set gathers tremendous momentum with “Drowned” to which Townsend says, “He gets really turned on being back at the beach. And he remembers the great days with thousands of kids. All mods, all listening to the Who, they really were. All gathered down at the beach at Brighton. And for the first time ever he realizes it’s not just the beach and the sea and the bullshit, but the sea is very attractive of itself.” The song lasts about ten minutes long and includes some inspired jamming in between Daltrey’s screams of “drowned!!” Townsend and Entwhistle have fun playing their games off of one another and thankfully this recording is well balanced enough to bring that out. Keith Moon gets his time in the spotlight in ”Bell Boy,” providing the Cockney voice for Ace-Face and his joy at being a bell boy.

“Doctor Jimmy” is a very dramatic eight minutes long, but it is a shame the finale “Love, Reign O’er Me” is cut in this recording. “Won’t Get Fooled Again” has the opening notes cut out but otherwise is complete and in excellent quality. The set ends with two tracks from Tommy. “Pinball Wizard” is introduced as “Pineball Blizzard” and is followed by “See Me, Feel Me.” There is almost eight solid minutes of audience cheering left uncut on the tape. There are many chants of “We want the Who,” begging for an encore before the band oblige and come out again. “Naked Eye” lasts for thirteen sublime minutes. The jamming ignites into such intensity that Townsend destroys his Les Paul at the song’s conclusion and the listener is left with undifferentiated feedback and fuzz and a very exausted band at the end.

Pink Floyd: Eclipse of the Darkside 1972 (FLAC)

1972-01-22-cov
Wintergardens, Bournemouth, England
January 22nd 1972
Recorder 2
lineage: cass[low] > Original Silver CDs > EAC > WAV > SoundForge 7.0 > SHN > WAV > CEP 2 > FLAC
total time: 44:30m
Sound Quality: VG+/EX- (vocals clear but slightly distant)
Taken from the roio 'Eclipse of the Darkside' (Gold Standard label). I reindexed some tracks to give it a better running order. No EQ or NR or nothing applied to the sound, it sounds 100% the same as the original roio.
Sound quality is nice, almost an EX...
1. Breathe (2:43)
2. On the Run (8:02)
3. Time (6:17)
4. Breathe (Reprise) (1:03)
5. The Mortality Sequence (4:00)
6. Money (7:50)
7. Us And Them (7:04)
8. Any Colour You Like (1:27)
9. Brain Damage (3:15)
10. Prototype Eclipse (2:49)

Pink Floyd: The Fireman's Oakland Master 1977 (FLAC)

1977.05.09_FiremansOaklandMaster_front
1977-05-09 Oakland Coliseum Oakland, CA
Cassette Master > PCM Beta > DAT > CDR Master
CDR > EAC > wav > flac
This recording comes directly from a known master, taped by the same recorder who did the Hollywood Bowl master (see, The Fireman's Tapes, Volume II).
A direct comparison with the other EX+ common roio from this date "Mr. Pig" reveals virtually identical recordings, certainly from the same recorder. Mr. Pig sounds like it was boosted and EQ'd (a little too bright for my tastes), while this recording has been untouched (levels are lower).
CwtAE is a nice touch for a 1977 show.

CD1
01 Sheep (11:17)
02 Pigs on the Wing (Part I) (2:15)

A great capture of a great show. Early Billy Joel playing in N.Y. - home turf and all that.
No more info on lineage is available to me. That being said, the quality of the recording is top notch. The lack of any noticable tape hiss and clarity of the recording makes me believe this was taped during a fairly recent rebroadcast of the show.

Stray Cats: Alley Cat Rumble (CD Image) .ape

Bootleg Release Date: August 08, 2006
Label: Music Avenue
Alley Cat Rumble contains a combination of studio outtakes, guest appearances, and live tracks that capture the raw energy of the Stray Cats in their prime. Inspired acoustic takes of "Stray Cat Strut", "Lust N' Love", "Mystery Train", "Oh Boy", and "Summertime Blues" are tame compared to the raucous live tracks recorded at the Roxy in 1981. The four bonus tracks are credited to the "Good Rockin' Cats" which adds to the lineup Danny B. Harvey, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Johnny Ramone, and Lemmy Kilmister. The sound is a bit thin, especially since Slim Jim Phantom used a minimal drum kit of snare, cymbal, and bass drum. Listening to the performances of "Fishnet Stockings", "Rumble in Brighton", "Double Talkin' Baby", and "Rock This Town" remind you why this band, rockabilly or otherwise, was one of the most exciting of the early '80s.

5. Green Grass and High Tides Forever

The levels in tracks 1 through 8 were uneven -- too low at the begining of the show, then relatively higher until the band introductions at the end of track 8. I used Wavelab to lower the leves and even things out, and also to mute a loud section at 1:33 on track two where the left channel was raised significantly for a second or so. I then used the Waves L1-Ultramaximizer to restore the volume and increase headroom.
There is some annoying mic buzz during times when lead singer's mic is on, but it's only audible when there's no other music.
The commercials at the begining of track 1 are amusing. The advertising of blank audio tape prior to a live concert broadcast speaks volumes about the recording and copying of live music in 1979. As for why they opened the show with the Star Wars theme, it beats me. The show was broadcast on WLIR on Long Island and WILQ in Philadelphia.
