Camel: San Francisco 1976 (FM) FLAC

b
OU believes this is possibly the best unreleased recording of a complete show from the 'Moonmadness' tour....(Including the PRRP remaster!)

Boarding House, San Francisco, California
26th June 1976
Radio broadcast, A-, 71min

This recording is one of the best documents of the band's 'Moonmadness' tour. Date is usually credited as 26th June, but 23rd is also mentioned. After their UK tour in support of the new album, Camel made a brief visit to the US, and this concert was recorded for FM radio broadcast. The set is similar to what they were playing at the time, with 'Another Night' instead of 'Lady Fantasy' being played as encore. Note that Mel Collins is not present on this recording, as he joined the band a little later in the year for live shows.
This recording has been widely traded since its first broadcast on KSAN FM, so there are many tape versions of varying quality floating around (some shorter ones missing 'Song Within a Song'). They all seem to originate from off-air masters, and the program seems to have been aired at least twice, judging by slight variations in station ID announcements.
A more contemporary version comes via the PRRP team, but their remaster 'Another Night' runs a little fast, and has noticeable denoising, muffling and artefacts. This version comes to me from a 3rd-generation tape in the custodianship of David D, radio broadcast researcher and collector extraordinare. It is possibly the best source for this show that has come to light so far.
My thanks to David for offering me a fine tape transcription, which I have remastered; balancing the volumes throughout the program (they were all over the place), reduced to mono to stabilise the stereo image (as it is a mono recording), and applying a very gentle equalisation curve (a little more punch in the bass, and drop the brightness in the upper mids), and editing the set together. The recording sounds quite bright in places, and a little dull in others. I've concluded that is not the eq, so much as an erratic live mix, and the prominence of Latimer's guitar, which seemed to have a particularly edgy tone on this occasion.
So here it is, an upgrade for all of you, I hope. Enjoy!

The Story Cometh…
“…The Great Marsh lies on the Essex coast between the village of Chelmbury and the ancient Saxon oyster-fishing hamlet of Wickaeldroth”
So begins the short story, “The Snow Goose” written by Paul Gallico. This was the inspiration for the famous Camel suite of the same name. A wonderful history of the band Camel describing the state of the band and how they came to write the music inspired by “The Snow Goose” can be found in the liner notes for their remastered studio album. There, we learn that Pete Bardens suggested creating a concept album based on Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha or his equally famous Steppenwolf; both of which were rejected by the band. It was bassist Doug Ferguson who suggested Paul Gallico’s story of “The Snow Goose” which was eventually accepted. Paul Gallico is most famous for writing “The Poseidon Adventure” but wrote “The Snow Goose” in 1941. As an American watching the development of World War II, Mr. Gallico was inspired to write a short story about a man, a young girl and both the joy and sadness that could occur at a time of war. Critically acclaimed, “The Snow Goose” became a story commonly read by many in England after the war. Obviously familiar with the story, the members of Camel set out to write a single piece of music with many movements, each pertaining to a different part of the book. For those unfamiliar with the story, the titles of the different movements of “The Snow Goose” suite will be meaningless. So, below is a summary of the story with underlined phrases and words corresponding to the titles used by Camel for the different movements of the suite
The sequence of movements and their titles correspond to the progression of the story.
The Great March was the setting for the story. There, in 1930 a man named Rhayader came to live alone in a lighthouse. He was a crippled man with a hunchback and a withered left arm. He spent most of his time painting and caring for the birds of the area. When Rhayader goes to town for supplies he is usually mocked by villagers and seen as “…that queer painter chap who lives down to the lighthouse”.
Because fowling as a popular sport in the region, the birds quickly learned that they could avoid the deadly gunfire by seeking Sanctuary at the lighthouse. One day a small girl named Fritha came to the lighthouse with an injured bird in her hands. It was The Snow Goose. Though initially afraid of the strange looking man she knew that he would be able to help the creature and so she overcame her fear and went to his aid. As the bird slowly recovered over the winter months the man and the young girl formed a Friendship. Though she lived in town, Fritha would come to visit the lighthouse and the two new friends she had there. By June of the next year the snow goose was healthy again and took flight, going on Migration with the other birds that stop each year at the lighthouse. The snow goose was indigenous to Canada but had come to Essex after a bad storm had thrown it off course. Rhayader and Fritha assumed that it would return again to its homeland once healed, but that was not the
case as they would discover later. With the snow goose gone, Fritha no longer came to the lighthouse. This left Rhayader alone again, with no friends or human companionship. Later that year, as fall arrived in October, Rhayader was greeted by the return of the snow goose. He quickly sent word to Fritha who was overjoyed to be reunited with her two friends again. Summer would come and the snow goose would again leave but would return again in the fall. So, the Flight of the Snow Goose was met with eager anticipation with each year’s changing of the seasons.
Eventually, the snow goose became a permanent resident of the lighthouse and a constant companion of Rhayader. But one day, upon a visit to her two friends Fritha discovered that Rhayader was planning a trip. The Preparation involved securing the lighthouse and adding supplies to his boat. He had heard men talking in the village. “He must go to Dunkirk; A hundred miles across the North Sea. A British army was trapped there on the sands, awaiting destruction at the hands of the advancing Germans.” It was 1940 and England was in the midst of war. Rhayader felt he
needed to help in any way that he could. Unfit for normal duty, he reasoned that helping to save these men with his boat was his only way to help the war effort. As he set off on his task, the snow goose followed, staying with him for the entire journey across the North Sea. Back and forth he went, carrying soldiers to safety, all the while being chaperoned by his feathered friend. Sadly, in a cruel twist of the story, Rhayader dies from German gunfire. A British destroyer comes upon the boat carrying his lifeless body noting the beautiful bird at his side. Eventually, he and his boat are sunk by the explosion of a floating mine, left by the Germans. The snow goose was un-harmed and flew back to its home.
In an Epitaph, British soldiers recounted the story of this “little dark man wiv a beard, a claw for a ‘and an’ a ‘ump on ‘is back” accompanied by “a bloomin goose”. They told of how they were saved by this man, for surely they would have died at the hands of the Germans if he had not come to their rescue. Fritha was alone back at the lighthouse and sensed that Rhayader was dead, never to return. Not long afterwards, she heard the familiar sound of the snow goose, that they named La Prince Perdue so many years ago, return for a final visit to the lighthouse. As the bird passed by, she felt it was carrying Rhayader’s soul to Heaven on its final journey back to its original home. With the loss of her two friends Fritha decided
never to visit the lighthouse again. The story ends with a German attack plane mistaking the lighthouse for a military site and destroying it with a single pass. The Great Marsh had been returned to its natural state with all evidence of Rhayader, his paintings, Fritha and the snow goose gone forever. PRRP Staff

Notes from the Re-Master
As Peter Bardens says during the show, this is the last performance of “The Snow Goose”, here, in December, 1975 in Reading, England. Fortunately, someone was there to tape it. And tape it, they did. This is an outstanding recording for its time. The exact equipment used and lineage of the source are unknown. We have to thank Andrew “Hogweeds” Skeoch for the torrented source of this show. It appears to be low generation and complete as the setlist matches set lists for other shows on the tour. It consists of two songs from the album “Mirage” followed by a fade-out. It seems as if the taper knew the set list and knew that he wanted a separate tape to be used for the Snow Goose suite. A fade in then captures Peter Bardens introducing
“The Snow Goose” and the fact that this will be it’s last performance. The whole suite is played with the exception of the section called Friendship. This may have been at a tape flip but the whole movement is missing and Friendship is missing from other performances given during the tour as well. The one noted exception is the performance at Royal Albert Hall in London with the Symphony Orchestra. As good as this recording is, there were still a number of flaws that needed correcting. The speed of the recording was found to be in error and was fixed. A gentle noise reduction was used to allow more subtle detail to be heard. Lots of tape clicks and pops were found and repaired. Because of the venue acoustics, an adjustment to the tonality was made. Dynamics were adjusted and channel balance was corrected. Finally, the show was tracked using standard live and studio references.

It is a direct copy of a single disc I have entitled "ANOTHER NIGHT". It was recorded at the Boarding House, San Francisco, California on 1976-06-26. It is on the RH Productions 2003 record label Cat Nos PRRP 002 (Remastered by Progressive Rock Remaster Project)
As to the sound quality quite easily 8/10 it is a very very good radio broadcast.

Camel: Snow Goose Tour Hamburg 1975 (VG+ Aud) FLAC (Repost)

Camel_1975
Continuing this series of Camel recordings, the second of their few known recordings of their 'Snow Goose' tour of 1975...

Musikhalle, Hamburg, Germany
5th December 1975
Aud, B+, 73min

This recording is one of the better documents of a complete 'Snow Goose' show. It is a very good stereo cassette recording, well traded over the years. It is also known as 5th Dec 1976, 5th September 1975 and 12th May 1975, however 5th December 1975 is the correct date, verified from a promotional poster. The setlist is typical of this time.

I have this from two traded CDRs:
* version 1: 73min, OK sound; 1. Snow Goose, 2. White Rider, 3. Supertwister, 4. Lady Fantasy (complete)
* version 2: 61min, better sound; 1. White Rider, 2. Supertwister, 3-19. Snow Goose, 20. Lady Fantasy (only the first two minutes).

I have compiled the two sources, putting in correct setlist order, and adding the complete Lady Fantasy to the better sounding version.

1. White Rider
2. Supertwister
3. The Great Marsh
4. Rhayader
5. Rhayader Goes to Town
6. Sanctuary
7. Fritha
8. The Snow Goose
9. Migration
10. Rhayader Alone
11. Flight of the Snow Goose
12. Preparation
13. Dunkirk
14. Epitaph
15. Fritha Alone
16. La Princesse Purdue
17. The Great Marsh
18. Lady Fantasy

Camel:
Andy Latimer; guitars
Pete Bardens; keyboards
Doug Ferguson; bass
Andy Ward; drums

Camel: San Jose Center 1979 (FM Source) shn

Front
CD>mkw Audio Compresion Tool>SHN
Not the exact data of this concert, in the cover of the CD say that it is of 1979 in San Jose Center, I deduce that in California. The sound is very good, the source is of FM or soundboard.
corrected info from biboprof (thanks):
Andy Latimer - guitar, vocals & flute
Jan Schelhaas & David Sinclair - keyboards
Mel Collins - saxophones, clarinets & flutes
Richard Sinclair - bass & vocals
Andy Ward - drums

Here is the right setlist:
1. Medley: Earthrise - First Light - Unevensong (there is no evidence of Rhayader here)
2. Song within a song
3.The sleeper
4. Supertwister (not Nirmrodel)
5. The Procession - The White Rider
6.Tell Me
7. Extract from the Snow Goose - this one is correct, but unfortunately fade out during the sax solo, 2.30 minutes before the end.

1. La princesse perdue
2. Rainbow's end
3. Echoes
4. Never Let Go
5. One of theese days i'll get an early night
6. Lady Fantasy (not performed on this tour but from BBC 1974. A wonderful version indeed that has been officially released on GODS OF LIGHT (Camel Productions 2000). Here it fades out two minutes before the end.

Camel: Düsseldorf 1979 (Aud) FLAC

9 November 1979
audience recording from the I Can See Your House From Here tour.

Even though Camel were going into a more and more "accessible" direction, this recording still proves the point of their excellent musicianship and the emphasis on instrumental parts. The mixture they found for the setlist is quite satisfying from that point of view!
I'd rate the sound quality as B to B+. Unfortunately, I did not get any information about the lineage from the trader.
So my lineage is: traded FLACs --> dB Poweramp (converting to wav) --> setlist check, lossiness check --> checksums --> you

Source: Audience
Rating: B+/A-

A very good show from I Can See Your House From Here Tour. Although recorded from audience, it has a pretty good sound.
The setlist is very interesting either, comprising most of I Can See... album, plus old classics. There is a very good Snow Goose selection, with shortened versions, but with more songs. And it includes the rare and unrealeased Nobody Knows.
Despite its shortness, a fantastic document.
Artwork is included.

Camel: Helsinki, Finland 1976 (Aud) FLAC

moonrise helsinki front
MOONRISE live at Kulttuuritalo
20 September 1976
audience recording

A recording from the Moonmadness tour. I'd rate the sound quality as B. Unfortunately, I did not get any information about the lineage from the trader. There are some dropouts, e.g. on Rhayader, occasionally the sound is somewhat unbalanced, but all in all this is of OK quality - hey, this was 1976!

This was the first tour when Mel Collins joined the band on saxes and flute. After ther first three songs from the Snow Goose, Peter Bardens makes an announcement for Supertwister, but the song that follows is Song Within A Song. What probably happened with the introduction is that the recording was cut and this piece was put in the wrong place. You can hear a faint cut after the Supertwister intro and Song Within A Song.

Camel: Sheffield City Hall, UK 1978 (FLAC)

BY REQUEST!
breathless sheffield front
20 September 1978
This one comes from the Breathless tour in 1978. Pete Bardens had left the band immediately after the album had been finished. The artistic problems between Pete and Andy Latimer had grown to such an extent that Pete decided to leave, being of the opinion that Andy drifted too much towards a mainstream market. Bass-player Richard Sinclair convinced his cousin and ex-Caravan band-mate David Sinclair to join Camel on tour, but the band even enlisted a second keyboard player, Jan Schelhaas being the choice. David had promised to help out only on that specific tour and left the band after that, Jan stayed with Camel until 1981.
The recording is quite a nice one, not perfect, perhaps a B+, but with a very fine setlist.
Again, this recording comes from a trade, and unfortunately, I don't have any information about recording gear, lineage etc. I got these in a trade as FLACs and only converted them to WAV to create the setlist and check for lossiness.
