Foreigner
Kansas/Styx/Foreigner
Road Runner Mobile Amphitheatre
Charlotte, NC [USA]
2010- June 8

Recorder: UNIVONC
Seat: VIP (Right Stack Facing Stage Directly Back)
OU NOTES: This was really a "shitty" day and the recording does not reflect it.
I am currently establishing a new medical practice (bitter lawsuit) and had to deal with all the crap with that.
I had a loaner car that day while my car was serviced.
I got rear ended in an accident. (not my fault) My back hurt that evening.
I sat in my seat and during this show some guy just "appears" in the box. I point him out during "cold as ice" and he is asked to leave. He then replies "all you had to do was ask". I replied, "get out." (I agree, all he had to do was ask and he could have sat in the box)......
During "hot blooded" the manager of the amphitheatre comes in and wants to sit down.
(He is a good friend)
However, my rig was in the seat and gets dumped on the ground. He has no clue what it was and I scooped it up. Unfortunately I feel my run of recording has come to an end. You may hear some brief discussion during "hot Blooded".
I got flustered and went home before "Juke Box Hero". This was really an awful day personally.
However, I refused to listen to the recording thinking it was plain crap BUT, I got surprised.
The recording is really really good and there is absolutely NO EQ done. It was cut and uploaded.
The torrent is true Master.
No fluff whatsoever.

Kansas

2010- June 8

Recorder: UNIVONC
Seat: VIP (Right Stack Facing Stage Directly Back)

OU NOTES:
Kansas has always been very special to me. It was one of the first four 8 tracks I ever purchased. I have ALWAYS wanted to see them and I was NOT one bit disappointed.
My 18 year old son saw me tearing up when they started. (embarrassed to say, but it was a wonderful to bring my youth past and thelove for this band to FINALLY see them!)
I would like to give special thanks to Belexes who has provided me with such wonderful recordings of concerts and especially Kansas.
This would be a very good recording...... BUT Since Kansas was the opening band, people were going to their seats, talking. (it can be heard minimally)
I unfortunately and subconsciously found myself whispering (singing) to the second stance of "Miracles" and it can vaugely by heard.
Lastly, during "Hold On" guitar solo, some a-hole walks up to me and asks how much was my Bud Light. I ignored him and then he asks again. I gave him an a-hole answer of "20 bucks" just so he would be pissed and leave.

Geetarz Comments: The 1988 Tour celebrated Clapton's 25th Anniversary in the music business, and coincided with the resurgence of classic roots rock and blues in the public eye. The tour was received warmly, and the crowd in Phildelphia was off the hook, which really took the energy level of the band up a notch as well.
Sourced from a low generation copy of a pro-shot Video in wide circulation among collectors - then remastered by the 3BR team.
Great, crisp soundboard recording. The mix, in particular, is very up-front and close-miked.
IMO, this is superior to the Tarantura release "Vivela Slowhand", which apears to have been sourced from a lower quality, higher-generation source and suffers from a bit of VHS tracking noise.

Sonic Youth: Peel Session 1989 (FM) FLAC

John Peel Sessions

recorded 12 March 1989
broadcast 20 March 1989
cassette > CDR > WAV > trader's little helper > FLAC

This session is an upgrade from other sources. It is taken from a first generation source. This isn't considered their finest hour (or thirteen minutes) but I actually quite like this session, even though it is instrumental and doesn't have the power of a lot of Sonic Youth. It is definitely worth a listen.

Hole (with Kurt Cobain): Triclops Sound Studios 1993 (FLAC)

courtney3497ab
10/93 Triclops Sound Studios, Atlanta, Georgia
Halfway through 1993, Love reassembled Hole with Erlandson, adding bassist Kristen M. Pfaff and drummer Patty Schemel. Hole was set to release their first major-label album, the more pop-oriented Live Through This, on DGC Records in April of 1994. Advance word on the album was overwhelmingly positive, with many critics calling it one of the best records of the year. Four days before the album was released, Kurt Cobain's body was discovered in the couple's Seattle home; he had died of a self-inflicted shotgun wound three days before.
This is an early mix of Hole's Album "Live Through This", including the outtakes "Old Age" and "Rockstar". You'll surely notice several differences compared to the final mix.
There are also some between song studio noises and count-in's on here not found anywhere else.
This tape was owned by Hole's bassist Kristen Pfaff and is thought to be of pretty low generation.
Mixed by Sean Slade.

Generation: CASS(x) > Flac
Transferred on a NAK Deck and other high quality equipment. Tracked with EAC.

Personnel:
Courtney Love - vocals, rhythm guitar
Eric Erlandson - lead guitar
Kristen Pfaff - bass guitar, piano, backing vocals
Patty Schemel - drums
Dana Kletter - additional vocals
Kurt Cobain - additional vocals

Hatfield and the North: BBC Radio Sessions 1973-1974 (FLAC)

H&TNBooklet
Unreleased recordings sourced from first generation copy of BBC master tape
EAC rip
Artwork

The band grew out of a line-up of Delivery in mid-1972 consisting of Phil Miller (guitar, from Matching Mole), Steve Miller (keyboards; Phil's brother), Pip Pyle (drums, from Gong) and Richard Sinclair (bass and vocals, from Caravan)
The band played a few live shows between July and September that year, but with Steve Miller being replaced by Dave Sinclair (from Matching Mole and Caravan), the band soon changed its name to Hatfield and the North. The Delivery line-up reunited for a BBC session in November 1972 with Steve Miller, Phil Miller, Lol Coxhill, Roy Babbington (bass), Pip Pyle, and Richard Sinclair on vocals. (Steve Miller went on to release a couple of duo albums with Coxhill in 1973/74.)
Dave Sinclair left in January 1973, shortly after the band's appearance (with Robert Wyatt on guest vocals) on the French TV programme "Rockenstock", and was quickly replaced by Dave Stewart (from Egg) before the band's first recordings were made.
The band recorded two albums, Hatfield and the North and The Rotters' Club. [1]Backing vocals on the two albums were sung by The Northettes: Amanda Parsons, Barbara Gaskin and Ann Rosenthal. On the Autumn 1974 "Crisis Tour", which Hatfield co-headlined with Kevin Coyne, the opening act was a duo of Steve Miller and Lol Coxhill (also previously of Delivery) and Coxhill usually guested with Hatfield on the jamming sections of "Mumps".
After disbanding, Dave Stewart joined National Health with Alan Gowen from Gilgamesh; Miller was a member throughout the band's existence, and Pyle joined in 1977. (Richard Sinclair also sat in on a couple of gigs and a BBC radio session that year.) Hatfield and the North and Gilgamesh had played a couple of shows together in late 1973, including a joint "double quartet" set, in some ways the prototype for National Health. Miller, Stewart, Pyle and Sinclair also worked together in various combinations on other projects. Wikipedia
Although excerpts have surfaced on the recently released archive compilations 'Hatwise Choice' and 'Hattitude', the sessions are yet to enjoy commercial release in unabridged form. Although bootleg versions of these sessions have surfaced, they are mostly of very poor audio quality. These release quality recordings were transferred to CD directly from a first generation copy of the original master tape belonging to a member of the band.

Pink Floyd: Meddled 1971 (.shn!) A TRUE Must Have!

now includes mega and fileserve links!
One of the best Floyd ROIO's ever made, bar none.
CDR001CVR
Harvested CDR 001
Paris Cinema, London, England
September 30, 1971

Here it is, the infamous Meddled ROIO, feverishly sought after by Floyd fans wanting to hear what Meddler was supposed to sound like before being mistakenly edited to mono.
It came from an FM broadcast over the BBC in England. The stereo dimension adds so much to the recording, you can actually hear very distinctly what each band member is doing.
This ROIO is just an incredible listen from start to finish. The sound is amazing as is the performance of the Floyd. Fat Old Sun never sounded better. It is important to note, Embryo and Blues came from a different original source I believe. You can read all about this title (and Meddler) at the following URL:
http://www.pf-roio.de/roio/roio-cd/meddler.cd.html

Setlist is as follows:
01 Fat Old Sun 15:29
02 One Of These Days 7:31
03 Echoes 26:35
04 Embryo 10:05
05 Blues 4:56

Amon Duul 2: London 1996 (Soundboard) FLAC

by request
amon-duul-2
Astoria Theatre, London, UK 1996-04-19 SDB

OU NOTE: cassette was simply labelled London `96, hence it would theoretically be possible that this is from Little Empire, Sheperd«s Bush, London 21st of September 1996. But all research that has been done, points more towards this being in fact from Astoria in April. All in all a very enjoyable, well balanced sdb recording from the mixing desk. This tape was given to one of the band members after the concert.

OU notes: I was suffering from technical difficulties with my mics unfortunately all night. Static and pops can be heard throughout all my recordings from all 4 mics, I did what I could to clean it up. I mixed all the channels down and did some editing, but tried retaining as much as the original as possible. I listened to all of them on my ipod all day long at work, and was content, on a couple different stereos you can hear the popping and static more dominately though. The line-up was awesome, Living Sacrifice tore it up...actually everyone did quite well, the sound folks only had a couple minor issues.

10 Killed in Montana Plane Crash
Published: July 6, 1987
Firefighters hosing down the wreckage of a twin-engine plane that crashed Saturday night at Flathead Lake. All six members of the Montana Band, a bluegrass group, were killed in the crash, along with the pilot, a friend of the pilot, the band's road manager and the 12-year-old son of a band member. The musicians had played at the lake resort and were flying to Post Falls for another engagement.
Give this band a listen and see what was almost the big time for them.
Great Local NW USA Band!!

As Freddie sang, "Another one bites the dust!"

friend6c
I received this this morning from my friend Bret:
Hey Dave,
Stadium Studios has been shut down permanently. Not surprising.

I wouldn't ask you to but if you wanted to post a message on your blog sometime about the demise of Stadium Studios, it would warm my heart and maybe let a lot of confused fans know what is up...
And if you do, please tell them they are all my friends and I will miss them and I wish them all well now and in the future. Maybe you can even find a nice headstone and put Stadium Studios on it... ha, ha.

Bret (formerly of Stadium Studios)

ok Bret if you want a headstone I'll use this one:
Santa_Gravestone

Pink Floyd Top 10

top-10
I have been asked numerous times to compile a list of the Top 10 Pink Floyd boots.
Anyone who loves Floyd can appreciate the impossibleness of fulfilling such a wish accurately and to the satisfaction of all.
Questions that belabor the request include questions such as
- What time period in their muscianship do you include?
Early Floyd is clearly more experimental and psychadelic but not everyone enjoys this seemingly split personality in the band (sorry Syd).
- Is three man Floyd "Floyd"?
- Is Roger (or David for that matter) "Floyd"?
- Do you favor a fantastic recording that has captured a less-than-inspiring performance?
- Do you include rare concerts setlists although the tape grades poor?
- Do you include studio outtakes?
- How can this be objectively even considered?
- Etc.

With that said, and with absolute certainty that this will not please everyone. I begin my first choice with the one posted below (the Hopkins recording). In the future look for "Pink Floyd Top Ten Boots" in the artist column. I know what I want to include but I will make additions only after I have had the time to check links (or repost).
If Mike Millard's unreleased Floyd recordings ever surface then we may need to redo this ;)

For years, there have been two sources and many versions of this show available. Earlier in the PRRP series a new A/D conversion of the recording generally referred to as "source 2" was obtained directly from the taper Steve Hopkins and this was used to produce the remaster named PRRP038. In the fall of 2009, a taper named Dan Lampinski allowed his treasure chest of recordings to be digitized and released to the public via torrent. One of these tapes was his recording of this Boston Pink Floyd show on June 18th of 1975. His recording will probably be referred to as source 3 by the trade community. As with his other recordings, this Lampinski capture of the Pink Floyd performance was outstanding. With both recordings essentially complete and of outstanding quality, there was an opportunity to produce a remaster of each using each as a reference for the other.
The Hopkins recording had tape flips during applause so there was no missing music. The Lampinski recording had tape flips during the music so the Hopkins recording could be used to restore the missing segments of Lampinski. As with most cassette tape recordings from the 1970's, there was a speed error identified in each recording. This was not corrected in the original PRRP038. Using standard references, the speed error of each tape was more easily identified and corrected. The EQ or tonality of the recordings was compared and matched as much as possible. From the clarity of the two recordings it is assumed that both tapers used excellent equipment and were both in a good location for a good capture. When comparing the two tapes, similarities and differences were noted....

Talking can be heard in Hopkins that is not in Lampinski at 22 seconds after last beat of You've Gotta Be Crazy.
Fire crackers 6 seconds before Roger's introduction of Raving and Drooling has "Yea" in Hopkins but not Lampinski.
Roger's introduction of Raving and Drooling sounds a bit more distant in Hopkins than Lampinski.
During Speak to Me someone says "Jesus" and can be heard in Hopkins but not Lampinski.
Talking can be heard in R channel of Hopkins but not Lampinski at 4:06 of Any Colour you like.
Acoustics seem very similar so the two tapers were probably close to each other. Single claps at 10:54 of You Gotta Be Crazy are heard in both so both tapers were in a similar location.
"nice and easy" heard in both recordings during slow guitar segment of Money at 5:14.
Carrier signal at 15,700Hz in Hopkins source, but not in the Lampinski source so clearly different recordings.
The two recordings in a remastered form can now be appreciated for their similarities and differences. Both are available here. Each has a separate information file identifying the source, the track times and the general process used for the remastering.

OU: Most likely you have heard, or at least heard about, this soundboard recording from the first leg of the Test For Echo tour. The source for this release is closer to the master than anything previously circulated. Therefore, it has a much cleaner, fuller and brighter sound. It is the complete show with excellent stereo sound quality. This is a must have for any collection.
Some have said this source is a ALD (Assisted Listening Device) others have claimed it's a true sound board. This is the second version of this I have received, the first did sound like an ALD device, this one however sounds like a true sound board.

Liner Notes: And Now For Something Completely Different?
The year was 1972 and Jethro Tull was on a roll. “Aqualung” and “Thick As A Brick” had been very successful albums and the band was receiving the praise and attention that they deserved. The music press of England had been kind in their reviews and noted music journalist Chris Welch was even considered a good friend. So what was next? The Tull website describes it well.
“…Work began in Switzerland (in August of 1972), then studios in France (mostly to escape high British tax rates). Enough tracks to fill three sides of a double album were developed when technical problems in the studio, and band members' longing for home, caused all but four tracks to be scrapped (some of this material, like 'Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of A New Day,' would appear on 'War Child'). The dreadful experience lead Ian to dub the Chateau d'Herouville studio as the 'Chateau D'Isaster.' With only seventeen days left before the American tour, Ian wrote new material and vastly restructured some of the 'Chateau d'Isaster' ideas and the band recorded the 45-minute album, 'A Passion Play'…. Thematically, the concept album chronicles, as the title implies, a story of life and death, beginning with a recently deceased man viewing his own funeral, descending into purgatory and Hell, then reincarnated.” - J-Tull.com
This new album was tracked only as “part one” and “part two”, each taking up a full side of the original LP record. It was not until the 1998 release of the Gold Remaster version of 'A Passion Play” that the originally intended tracking of the show was known and used. From that listing, one can see that the only track to survive from the Chateau d'Herouville sessions and make it onto this album was the song “Critique Oblique”, though “Tiger Toon” was re-worked to produce the Passion Play's “Prelude”. The album was to rise to number one in the United States and number 13 in England, but not without a few bumps along the way.
The new tour with “A Passion Play” was supposed to begin on April 28th, 1973 at the Wembley Empire Pool but this two-night booking was cancelled, despite sold out shows. Tull fans then looked to the start of the US tour for the first performance of the new material. On May 4th, the performance began in Evansville, Indiana with the opening “lifebeats” but the accompanying film was not shown. Later in the show, the “Hare” film was shown out of context but broke down, as it did on May 30th in Toronto. The next night in Clemson, SC the equipment truck arrived late and so the soundcheck was performed in front of the audience. Since the show did not start until 10pm, “A Passion Play” was omitted from the set. The next night's show in Maryland was cancelled because the equipment truck broke down. Great confusion exists regarding the next 10 days in Tull history. Some claim that the band spent 4 days in Knoxville, TN rehearsing the new material, while others claim (with inconsistency) that Jethro Tull concerts were performed and attended. Finally, according to written account, “A Passion Play” was definitely performed in Hampton, VA on May 17th and Richmond, VA on May 18th.
After finishing the first leg of the American Tour, and in a move that defies logistical sanity, the band returned to England in June to play the two previously cancelled shows at the Empire Pool, June 22nd and 23rd, the only English shows of the tour. As reported in Melody Maker on June 23rd, Tull's manager Terry Ellis admitted that all the proceeds from the two gigs would likely be used just to cover the cost of returning the equipment from the US, and then flying it all back out again for the second leg of the American tour.
Once familiar with the material in the live setting, the band expected smooth sailing. “A Passion Play” was released in England on July 6th and was then released in the US on July 23rd, the day of this Oakland show. Audiences, who had understandably never heard the new material, seemed to receive it warmly. Sadly, the critics had other ideas. After playing three nights in Inglewood, CA (July 20-22), the Los Angeles Times printed these comments from Robert Hilburn: “By the time Tull left the stage Sunday night, nearly 75,000 persons had paid upwards of $400,000 to see the English rock group …I only hope they found the show more rewarding than I did. There were, to be sure, moments of high style and imagination, particularly in the use of film, but there were also some moments of extremely tedious music. While the group's stage antics at that time - highlighted by Anderson's flitting around like a wild-eyed, super-charged Captain Hook gone mad - and fire-breathing instrumental arrangements dominated by a sort of huff-and-puff flute sound - were among the most colorful in rock, there was a lack of strong, central focus to Anderson's lyrics that kept the group's music from realizing its full potential.
Things did, however, begin impressively at the Forum. Following a spirited set by Steeleye Span (an English group which has effectively merged traditional folk with modern electronics), the Tull portion of the evening began when a small white dot appeared on a movie screen at the rear of the stage. The dot flashed off and on in time with an amplified heartbeat. Slowly, the dot grew larger and larger. After several minutes it turned red, and a ballerina joined it on screen. At first, the dancer was lying motionless on her back. Slowly coming alive, she eventually leaped through a mirror in what was a stunning piece of film. At that instant, the screen was raised and the group came on stage to begin A Passion Play, a chiefly instrumental work that alternates, in typical Tull fashion, between gentle moments and sudden, dramatic bursts of power.
While it holds your attention for a while, its instrumental repetitiousness and its un-arresting, inaccessible lyrics eventually undercut its impact. After 20 minutes, mercifully, the group gave way to another engaging Anderson film (The Hare). After the film, the group returned with another numbing 20 minutes of A Passion Play and then 15 minutes of Thick As A Brick. It then moved into some of the better known tunes from Aqualung. If there was ever any question about the rambling, disjointed nature of Anderson's longer works, the placement of these punchier, crisper, more concise pieces from Aqualung on the same show answered it. Anderson remains a talented, serious, imaginative artist, but his extended works need more easily identifiable, engaging themes and varied musical elements if they are to be worthy of the attention he wants for them.” R. Hilburn 24th July 1973
Chris Welch, attending the Empire Pool shows, describes other aspects of the show and adds his own commentary:
“…One and a half hours solid good music by Jethro Tull at the Empire Pool, Wembley, would have been sufficient to send home many more contented fans. Instead, an over-long over-produced marathon seriously impaired their impact - and their reputation…. The Passion Play which constituted the first part of the concert, and is the basis of their next album, was a disappointment….(Yet), Ian played soprano sax with a bug attachment, with considerable facility, which added a new tonal dimension to the band sound. Jeffery Hammond-Hammond their bass player charged around the stage in a suit and Panama hat, in a kind of Monty Python-ish silly walk that seemed a parody of the natural movements of a musician inspired by his music.
The piece continued unabated, and bearing in mind we haven't heard the album yet, seemed to take a considerable time to show any signs of cohesion. The structure had a kind of Elizabethan mode, with a plethora of changes that did not resolve into any satisfying or logical direction….The lyrics or story of the Passion Play did not communicate one whit….Part of the play was taken up with a movie (The Hare), filmed in color featuring members of the group and a ballet company. This fell flat at first, greeted with yells of 'No substitute,' with which I was bound to agree, although a colleague who thought the whole show terrible, said the film was the best part, which at least shows how opinions can differ….” C. Welch, Melody Maker 30th June 1973
Ian Anderson was not too pleased with the reviews of the new Tull material. There were even rumors of a plan to halt the tour and disband Jethro Tull permanently. Fortunately for Tull fans the band has continued well into the 21st century. Most serious Jethro Tull fans have a strong opinion of “A Passion Play”, either positive or negative but all will agree that it was a unique experience in the history of the band.
Now let's move on to this recording; July 23rd, 1973 in Oakland, California. The show is from the master tape and is almost complete. Sadly, only a segment of the song “No Rehearsal” was present and was tracked separately. This is a song created during the Chateau d'Herouville sessions which was played during live performances in 1973. The drum solo is also cut at the beginning and we chose not to patch it. At the beginning of the recording we have tracked the entire Passion Play using the originally intended listing provided by the band. Towards the end, if you listen closely to the extended instrumental section of “Wind-up” you will hear segments that clearly become “Minstrel in the Gallery” later on in 1975. Finally, Anderson ends the show with the ringing telephone which was a metaphor for the time.
PRRP Staff

Notes from the Re-Master
We began with a FLAC encoded, digitized copy of the master tape. With the first listen it was clear that the hiss level was excessive and reduced appreciation of the subtle aspects of the show. There were also many microphone bumps that needed to be removed or reduced as much as possible along with other clicks and pops. The complete show is here except for a truncated “No Rehearsal” and the incomplete beginning of the drum solo. We chose to leave those segments un-altered rather than patching them from another source. For a 1973 audience recording this is quite good quality. Still, the frequency response drops significantly above 7,500Hz. Tonality needed adjustment given midrange excesses and excessive high-bass frequencies. Because auto-record-level circuits were in play, there were a number of partial dropouts found requiring repair. There were other single channel partial dropouts that also needed repair.
The original master tracked the Passion Play section as a single track. We added tracking to reflect the full tracking intended by Jethro Tull at the time. We also adjusted other track points. Finally, analysis showed that speed correction was needed and was applied to the whole show.
