Led Zeppelin: Birmingham 1977 (G Aud) FLAC

PREVIOUSLY UNCIRCULATED ALTERNATE SOURCE
front cover
BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA - MAY 18 1977

PREVIOUSLY UNCIRCULATED ALTERNATE SOURCE (Thanks to Jon Meacham in Birmingham for finding the recording and having it professionally transferred)
8 TRACK MASTER CASSETTES (as in 70's style 8 track tapes!) digitally transferred in Birmingham by a company that wishes to remain 'nameless' ;)
8 track cassette master > professional digital transfer to CDR > EAC > WAV > Sony Sound Forge 8 (track editing, speed/pitch correcting and EQ; alternate sources used to patch cuts- see below) > WAV > TLH > FLAC

OU: I patched the major cuts in the recording using the following:
"Out Of The Way" silver CDs > EAC > WAV > Sony Sound Forge 8
"Dixie" silver CDs > EAC > WAV > Sony Sound Forge 8
SQ 6-7

MC/Crowd intro
The Song Remains The Same
The Rover > Sick Again
Nobody's Fault But Mine
In My Time Of Dying (ending cut; patched w/ OOTW & Dixie sources)
Since I've Been Loving You
No Quarter
Ten Years Gone
Battle Of Evermore
Going To California (ending cut; patched w/ OOTW source)
Black Country Woman > Bron Y Aur Stomp (slight cut during BYAS; patched w/ OOTW source)
White Summer > Black Mountain Side
Kashmir (temporary volume drop in middle)
Over The Top (slight cut during tympani section)
Noise Solo
Achilles Last Stand
Stairway To Heaven
Rock And Roll

OU: Jon Meacham's brother and a couple of friends attended the concert and made this recording. In true 70's fashion they taped the show using 8 track tapes. After his brother's passing Jon discovered the 8 track tapes; then he went to a company in Birmingham that does digital transfers of analog audio and video recordings. He then contacted me over at the official Led Zeppelin website for advice where I was known for my 'expertise' on the '77 tour and recordings.) He offered to send me a copy of the raw digital transfer, so that I could try to improve the sound quality. And here is the end result; the raw recording played at least a step fast, so I did some speed and pitch correcting on it. I also re-EQ'd and boosted the volume of the recording, as the raw recording was very boomy in the low end (not to mention quiet). That said, it is by no means perfect; there are a few cuts here and there, the most major ones I "patched" using my Birmingham "Out Of The Way" and "Dixie" CDs. There were also some tape issues (flutter and warbling) during the acoustic set, not to mention a bit of digital static (presumably made during the digital transfer) also during the acoustic set.
These issues are nothing too serious, though (I've heard worse.) Still listenable. That aside, sound quality wise, IMO this alternate source is much better than the "Dixie" recording but still a notch or two below the "Out Of The Way" source.
DO NOT SELL THIS RECORDING, as the 'cover design' Mr Meacham lashed together clearly states :). Enjoy!

Led Zeppelin: Los Angeles 1977 (Ex Aud) FLAC

- Deep Striker
Deep Striker - front
Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles, CA, USA
June 27, 1977
Audience recording
Empress Valley Supreme Disc EVSD 26-29
this is 4cd version of audience recordings from bootleg label EVSD

argenteumastrum.com says:
DEEP STRIKER - EMPRESS VALLEY SUPREME DISC EVSD 26/27/28/29
Recording: Excellent to Superb stereo audience.
Source: The Forum, Inglewood, Los Angeles, California June 27 '77.
Comments: Japanese bootleg. Deluxe long box with CDs housed inside. The usual sticker in placed on the back of the cover. The first pressing contains a faulty disc no. 3 (with #TG5095) including one second gaps between all tracks, quickly repaired (with #TI5060). Limited edition to a few hundred copies. (One of the most hard to find and expensive Empress Valley efforts.)

uuweb.led-zeppelin.us says:
Deep Striker Empress Valley - EVSD 26-29 - 4CD
June 27, 1977 The Forum - Los Angeles, CA.Audio: 9+ AUD
One of the most expensive bootlegs I have ever had the pleasure of owning and an incredibly hard set to locate on the collector market as well. Caution must be given when buying this set as there are bad copies of disc number 3 in circulation. The "bad" disc 3 has a mastering fault and has a 1 second gap in between tracks. The matrix number of the bad disc 3 is TG5093. The matrix number of the corrected disc 3 is TI5060. Be warned when shopping around for this expensive set. I got lucky in that my copy came with both the "good" and "bad" copy of disc 3, so my set contains 5CDs in all and not the standard 4CDs. The package is the "Empress Valley" long box - a hard cardboard block trimmed out in the center to hold the discs. The tray is housed in a glossy cardstock open-ended slipcover. The individual discs are housed in cream paper sleeves with the Empress Valley logo printed in gold on the lower right corner. The last night in the LA Forum in excellent quality courtesy of the late great Mike Millard's fantastic audience source tapes. The tape starts out with the cheering masses anxiously awaiting the start of the show. There are initial tape balance issues, but these seem to be resolved during the soundcheck just prior to the opening of The Song Remains The Same. The source tape is excellent quality - typical of Mike Millard source tapes - it's taped near the stage, is very clear, well balanced and displays an incredible sense of depth. The tape is slightly hissy, but it in no way detracts the recording. There is also a detectable ripple effect audible in some of the quieter parts of the tape - probably an accidental by product of the tape recorder. The opening audience cheer sound as if it has been looped (TDOLZ's Sunset also has this issue) for several seconds extending the hysteria prior to the start of the show. Nobody's Fault But Mine has a seamless tape splice for several seconds at about the 1 minute 42 second mark on the disc. The audio quality remains consistent, but there is a definite variance in tone there - superb splice though. The start of No Quarter contains some quick tape swaps, again seamlessly done. The section of tape after Ten Years Gone is sliced in and lasts until just prior to the start of The Battle Of Evermore. The tape flutter becomes increasingly apparent during the acoustic set but not to the point that it ruins it. At around 4 minutes 5 seconds into Kashmir we switch over to an alternate tape for 9 seconds before seamlessly switching back to the main tape. There also appears to be a several second tape swap in the empty space after Trampled underfoot and another after Bonzo's Over The Top drum solo. Achilles Last Stand contains a cut in the tape that causes audio to be lost. I am fairly certain that there are no available bootlegs that have this section intact. Stairway To Heaven had a number of seamless tape swaps. The last night in L.A. didn't quite have the party atmosphere that was present on the Eddie or Badgeholders nights, but it was a solid show and a worthy addition to any collection. Due to the staggering cost that this set trades for on the collector market though, I have to recommend the TDOLZ title Sunset over this one on the cost factor alone. Unless you have deep pockets or are actively collecting EVSD, I can't see any merit in spending the admission price. Deep Striker is an improvement over Sunset, but given the cost differences between the two sets, it's not that big of an improvement. Track it down on CDR if you just absolutely have to have a copy. If you are in the market to buy, don't forget to verify the matrix number of disc 3 prior to buying. Highlights for me from this show include Sick Again, Ten Years Gone, the acoustic Dancing Days snippet and Achilles Last Stand (tape cut or not!). (Steve Prendergast July 03)

Pink Floyd: Zurich 1977 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

pink floyd pig
**Tracks That The Community Assumed Were Not Recorded.......But Thanks to Kbrubaker, Here They Are In Great Quality**
Hallenstadion, Zurich, Switzerland - 3 February 1977

Lineage: Maxell UD C60 Cassette > *Technics RS-B965-M > Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 > Audacity 1.3 > FLAC (24bit/96kHz)
*The Technics RS-B965-M is a modified deck - for details see the Tapeheads.net forum
xACT used to create FFP

OU: A raw, high resolution transfer of what are almost certainly the previously missing tracks taped by recorder 1. Recorder 1 is the version of the concert that is about 83 minutes long and the best generally circulating copy is a DAT > CDR. This taper made arguably one of the best stereo audience recordings of Pink Floyd's 1977 European tour.
The exciting thing about the tape, other than it being a very strong stereo recording, is that before now it was assumed that POTW2 and Pigs were simply not recorded. Unfortunately Kbrubaker's tape contains only these two songs. They appear to have been added as fillers, along with the copy of WTTM mentioned by Littlepieces below.

01 Pigs On The Wing, Part 2
02 Pigs (Three Different Ones)
Total running time 21 mins 27 secs

**Littlepieces' Notes On This Recording**
-This is 1977-02-03 since Roger can clearly be heard saying "eight" at ~3.11m and ~11.32m of Pigs.
-During POTW, Part 2 you can here the same applause, whistles, yells, and feedback as on recorder 2 for 1977-02-03.
-Not recorder 2 as that is mono and lessor quality.
-Not recorder 3 (Pacco) as that is mono, recorded from the rear of venue and much lesser quality.
-Though possible, seems extremely unlikely that it is the recorder 4 Grolsch mentioned in Pacco's original 16-44 recorder 3 torrent. Recorder 4 is supposed to be mostly incomplete tracks due to many reel changes. The chances that these are recorder 4 tracks that are complete and have the same output level/pattern across spectrum as those found on recorder 1 seems very remote.

Conclusion: Since the HQ stereo audience recorder 1 is missing Potw pt2 and Pigs and this recording is of 1977-02-03 and is also a HQ stereo audience recording that is not apparently any of the other recorders, then it seems reasonable to conclude that they are the missing tracks from 1977-02-03.
Additional Note: Kbrubaker's tape also contained a very poor quality recording of 'Welcome To The Machine' that is not from the 3rd. After EQing it to make Dave's vocals more audible, it's clear he is not laughing during the lyrics to 'Welcome To The Machine' at ~5m as he is on the 2-3 recordings.

Pink Floyd: Anaheim 1977 (G+ Aud) FLAC

Cali_pigs_frnt
RoIO title: CALIFORNIA NIGHTS
date/venue: 1977 May 07 - Anaheim, Anaheim Stadium, California, USA
source: audience - gen : ? (low?) > SHN > FLAC

Cd1
01 Sheep
02 Pigs On The Wing Part 1
03 Dogs
04 Pigs On The Wing Part 2
05 Pigs (Three Different Ones)

Cd2
01 Soycd (Parts 1-5)
02 Welcome To The Machine
03 Have A Cigar
04 Wish You Were Here
05 Soycd (Parts 6-9)
06 Money
TOT LENGTH: 125.49

OU Notes: mmm not really an excellent recording, but the performance is better than what you can probably expect from a few circulating recording like this. The audience is pretty excited too.
Sounds as sourced from a low generation tape since it's enough bright, though a bit hissy and at times distorted. the speed is not always right ... again I dunno why but I catch it always on Pigs (bah).
Money has serious speed problems, seems like from a different source, but it's not ... I guess it sounds not so well just because of the taper changing of place between the end of the show and he beginning of the encore and almost certainly because of problems with the recorder’s batteries. oh, well better this way than nothing at all.
the "California Pigs" RoIO is hardly circulating reporting this date but it's really Frankfurt 27 Jan. 77
Waters screeches 30-10 at 13.49 (3rd verse) on Pigs (3DO) someone suppose it sounds rather as 32 ..

Pink Floyd: Animal Instincts Rev. B 1977 FLAC (Must Have!)

another "Top 10" - reposted by request
21ef51
OU: It was my discussions with Ron concerning the clicks, pops, and other glitches in AI (rev0) that led to my joining the team.
One of my earliest contributions was to deglitch AI and the first rev A edition was released.
As the years went by, a much lower generation source for this show emerged. My first knowledge of its existance was the RoIO Mr Pig. Although the SQ on Mr Pig was better than AI (you can hear many subtleties not detectable on AI revA), Mr Pig had other problems, like clipping, gaps during the tape flips, unbalanced, etc. So the thoughts of doing a rev B began.
That was two years ago...
About six months ago, we decided to do it. We got another source, a better source than Mr Pig. One that didn't have the clipping problem. Then Marc-Olivier
went to work.
Marc-Oliver spent quite sometime remastering this new source and expertly patching the tape flips. Then it was my turn.
So here it is! Animal Instincts rev B (HRV-CDR-014)
Pink Floyd recorded live at the Oakland Coliseum
May 9, 1977.
photo from the audience:

Disc One:
Sheep
Pigs On The Wing (part 1)
Dogs
Pigs On The Wing (part 2)

Disc Two:
Have A Cigar
Wish You Were Here
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts 6-9)

For me, the highlight of this show is SoYCD6-9. It's the best version of this song ever.

"Here Come the Pigs!"
Pink Floyd were ready with their new album “Animals”. The album was recorded during the summer and fall of 1976 in a new studio built in Islington, North London and contained both old and new material. Ever since the end of 1974, and all the way through the many legs of the 1975 tour, the band frequently performed ‘Raving and Drooling’ and ‘You’ve Gotta Be Crazy’, two brand new songs that failed to make the final cut of “Wish You Were Here”. Reluctant to throw away such good material, the band re-structured the two unreleased songs around the concept of the new album, respectively re-naming them ‘Sheep’ and ‘Dogs’. New material written to accompany those two older number included “Pigs (Three Different Ones)” and a two-part song called ‘Pigs on a Wing’. Roger describes this as a love song to his wife Carolyne. Other motivations for the album, according to Waters, included moralist Mary Whitehouse and the rising conservative politician Margaret Thatcher. Both received the brunt of his scathing sarcasm.
As always, the band wanted the world to take notice of their new work. They adopted the new floating pig mascot for both symbolic and practical reasons. The cover of the new album shows the pig floating over the London Battersea power station. To get this picture, the graphic artist wanted to superimpose the pig into a standard picture. The band had other plans and insisted that a 40 foot helium filled Zeppelin of a pig be made, inflated, and launched over the site. This spectacle was arranged with a film crew, tethering crew and even a sharp shooter in case the giant pig broke loose and needed to be shot down. Unfortunately, the first day’s attempt was unsuccessful due to weather. The next day the photographs were taken but before they would return the zeppelin to the ground, the wind broke the tethering lines and the huge inflatable pig was loose. This problem was further complicated by the fact that no one remembered to ask the sharp shooter to come back for the second day. The pig floated around London for quite a while before landing in a field near Canterbury. Though it was obviously unplanned, the band could not have asked for a better publicity event.
This brings us to the present PRRP release. Dortmund, Germany, January 23rd 1977 was to witness the very first show of the 1977 Animals Tour. The new album was to be released the day of this performance, therefore no one in the audience was very familiar with the new material.
Saxaphonist Dick Perry joined the band again on this tour, while Terrance “Snowy” White was asked to provide back-up rhythm guitar. Pink Floyd once more split the show into two sets. The first set consists of the whole “Animals” album while the second presented –for the first time- the complete “Wish You Were Here” album. Two encores were also provided, both taken from the “Dark Side of the Moon” album. The combination provided an excellent chronicle of the Pink Floyd approach to music at the time and received a warm reception for this very enthusiastic German crowd.

Notes from the Re-Master
The source for this audience recording is generally good but a number of problems needed to be fixed. For some reason, many of the songs were spliced together, making an abrupt cut during the audience applause. We presume this was done to shorten the recording but none the less we had to smooth these transitions in order to maintain the flow of the concert. The hiss level was quite high so it was localized and reduced. The sound quality was good with music signal clearly present up to 11,000 Hz but the tonality needed adjustment. The low treble range was particularly harsh and piercing during Gilmour’s guitar solos and the saxophone leads.
Selective attenuation of those frequencies reduced this audible annoyance. At rare times the bass overwhelmed the other instruments and needed to be reduced as well.
During a five minute segment on disc 2 the left channel lost significant treble. This was restored as well as possible. At the end of “shine on you crazy diamond” the recorder probably had battery failure since the pitch and tempo fall noticeably. This was adjusted to be consistent with the rest of the show but brief variations remain. Conversely, during a section of disc 1 the tempo and pitch are unusually increased. This section was slowed back to the tempo and pitch of the rest of the show. Many brief dropouts occurred. Some were removed while others were pasted over to be less noticeable.

SGT. Page's Badgeholders Club Band Tarantura 2000 - TCD-YUZUKI-3 - 3CD
June 23, 1977 The Forum - Los Angeles, CA. Audio: 9+/9.5 EXCELLENT
This show has been released numerous times over the years and instead of giving a play by play of what's happening on-stage, I am going to instead only offer my comments on the source tape mix and Tarantura's handling of the mastering. If you want the detailed overview of this concert, please reference my comments on the TDOLZ version, For Badgeholders Only, and then come back here. The overall audio is excellent. The main chunk of source tape used here is outstanding - much cleaner, crisper and fuller than the TDOLZ version with little tape hiss and more bottom end. It could very well give the Eddie tape a run for it's money. This is the same source tape used on the TDOLZ For Badgeholders Only set. The flip side of the tweaking of the sound is that some of the higher range portions of the tape begin to distort and break under the equalization. It's not as bad as it sounds but it is worth mentioning. I really noticed this during the guitar solo in Over The Hills And Far Away. There is a tape swap after Over The Hills And Far Away that is executed perfectly with only the slightest change in tape depth and a two second section of tape that has an echo effect on the audience cheer that is the result of the two source tapes being faded in/out at the same time but a fraction off on the timing (it's an old club DJ trick). The tape cut in TDOLZ's Since I've Been Loving You has been fixed in this release and is patched with the alternate source. The mysterious "heartbeat" found on the TDOLZ set during No Quarter is thankfully absent here. It's really hard to comprehend that this is the same source tape issued by TDOLZ as the differences in sound and completeness are night and day. Ten Years Gone features the splice in the solo just prior to the "Do the eyes not sparkle" lyric. The Stomp also features the familiar tape gaps nicely filled. Trampled Underfoot features a 4 second patch of tape at 03:50 that has an odd metallic sounding echo that disappears almost as fast at it started. There is a glitch in the tape at 06:09 in Achilles Last Stand. A split second of tape overlap is what it sounds like. There seems to be another one of these at the 08:39 stamp as well. The Millard tape recorder ripple becomes noticeable on the 3rd disc - especially during Stairway To Heaven - it's like a low pulsing flutter. This is also very noticeable on Millard's tape used by Empress Valley for Deep Striker. I do not know what causes it but it must be due to something with his recorder. The artwork and packaging I have a mixed opinion of. I bought the promotional prototype edition that is limited to 50 copies and I really like the shuffle pack format that this set came in. I am undecided on the whole The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's parody sleeve design, but I am absolutely aghast at the piss poor psychedelic rainbow backgrounds and the (at times) goofy graphics and designs. Empress Valley is much more refined and mature on their graphics design and they ooze class. This almost borders on tacky but it's tolerable due to the cool shuffle pack format I'm going to take the stance that if all I can bitch about is the goofy artwork, it's a winner - especially when one takes into consideration this label's reputation for molesting their source tapes. The only real complaint I have is that the tracks were split up a bit too much for my liking (ie we don't need to split The Rover Intro into Sick Again and make it 2 separate tracks. Thankfully CoolMixMan and Black Dog Studios are no longer a part of this label. Perhaps we can now expect quality product from this label. One can only hope. In my opinion, this set is highly recommended and is the definitive commercial version of this show. WOW! I can't believe I actually said that about a Tarantura 2000 release! Yes: New York 1977 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

The Lostbrook Tape Series Volume 121
YES MSG, NYC, NY 1977-08-07-front
The Yes party continued on our third and final night at Madison Square Garden. After "Parallels," you'll hear Jody say, "Nice Howe seats!" - a reference to our fourth row location directly in front of Steve Howe.
This was our fifth Yes concert in six days in two different cities. Reasonable people might have called it quits after this, but Reason took a vacation during the Summer of '77. In the end, we were punished for our gluttony. See Volume 122 for details.

OU: Dirty Deeds is I think from the roio "Ride On Bon" but I'm not 100% sure. The rest is definitely from a pre-broadcast version of the 2007 radio broadcast. The key there's no ads which makes this far better on the ear.

So to the gig:
The setlist played that night:
1) Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
2) She's Got Balls
3) Problem Child
4) Live Wire
5) The Jack
6) Jailbreak
7) TNT
8) Can I Sit Next to You Girl?

3) The Jack
4) Can I Sit Next to You Girl?

04. Repair Mic bumps.
05. Attenuate some claps.

Notes: Recording begins with 90 seconds of Rogoff source then Lampinski source comes in to produce the stereo image.
Sound quality suggests that the Rogoff mics were hidden at the beginning. Sound is a bit muffled until 45 seconds into Parallels when it becomes more clear at which point the full quality of the stereo recording can be appreciated.
Taper says: "It was probably the point at which enough of the people in front of us sat down to get an unobstructed, on-axis view of the PA. I was using a mike stand made from one leg of a lightweight tripod. It was held in place by a photographer's clamp on the arm of the seat. The stand was connected to the clamp with a wingnut acting as a set screw."
At the end of Close To The Edge and just before the next song (Wonderous Stories) begins, both tapers changed/flipped tapes so there is a brief fade-out/fade-in.
Given the need to patch a 16 second tape flip segment of the Lampinski source with Rogoff source, at this point in the song Awaken, the stereo field converts to single-source and then reverts back to full stereo. Careful listening allows identification of this segment.
Sound characteristics would suggest that Rogoff was further back in the venue than Lampinski who was seated in section 2 row 11. Rogoff remembers being "dead center" but has no documentation of exact seat.
