Vinyl Gang Product 370
Original VGP CD -> CD-R (nero7) -> WAV (EAC) -> FLAC (flacfrontend) -> You
Studio outtakes 1966 - 1979
Quality: Terrific Stereo
Fantastic sounding VGP release based on a legendary 2LP bootleg.
Disc 1 is basically an alternate "Emotional Rescue", with unedited/slightly different takes of some songs, added with Claudine and Keith's 2 terrific covers
Disc 2....is even better, especially the last 5 tracks on this disc are among the most enjoyable Rolling Stones outtakes, IMO
All in all, excellent bootleg. I usually enjoy having classics like this on silver disc, but I couldn't find this VGP, so I had to settle for a copy....+ the vinyl boot
Artwork included.

Steve Miller Band: Seattle 1969 (FLAC)

ScreenShot161
November 29, 1969 Seattle, Eagles Auditorium
This is another curiosity from a tapers aspect. What you get is an FM radio broadcast...but was it intended, and planned by the station KOL-FM...or is it a broadcast of a bootleg recording? I don't know.
Here's a mind numbing night with the Steve Miller Band, It's the drummer's,..Tim Davis'.... birthday, and the band makes the most of it.
What was recorded was one full side of a standard 7 inch reel at 3 3/4 ips...96 minutes officially...maybe stretched to 97 with conservative manufacturers safe area. A few spots where one channel duffs out, but this won't keep you from enjoying this wonderful show. Let's go:

*** Set One ***
01 - Can't You Hear Your Daddy's Heartbeat
02 - Don't Write Me No Letters
03 - Steppin' Stone
04 - Space Cowboy
05 - Kow Kow Calqulator
06 - Blues With A Feeling
KOL radio I.D. insert
07 - Mercury Blues w/ Happy Birthday

*** Set Two ***
08 - Gangster Of Love (14 minute jam)
09 - Motherless Children
10 - Don't Let Nobody Turn You 'Round
11 - Got Love If You want It (end is cut, and rest of show is gone)

Steve Miller - guitar/vocals
Lonnie Turner - Bass/bkg vocals
Tim Davis - Drums/bkg vocals

Said to be the worst performance of the (cut short) tour of 1977. I think of Led Zeppelin music like I do of pizza or sex - even if it's bad it's still pretty good :)
Have a great weekend, I'll have plenty more on Monday.

Upgrade Info from Torrent:
"This is my attempt at improving one of the most famous Rolling Stones bootlegs of all time, TMOQ's "Welcome to New York." Originally released in 1973 on LP, it had great stereo soundboard sound quality of the last show of the Stones' '72 US tour on Mick Jagger's 29th birthday, and a great cover drawn by William Stout. Since then, it has been re-released many times on LP and CD, in varying quality. I tried to use the best available sources for my version. Tracks 1-6 are from a second generation audience recording. Quality is pretty good for '72; I've heard a few better and many worse. I discovered this tape in 1992, on a Rolling Stones mailing list. The person I got it from got from a friend who was the taper.
He told me his friend called Madison Square Garden before the show and asked if it was ok to bring a tape recorder, and they said it was. Of course during the show someone noticed him taping and he had to stop, but somehow he managed to keep what he had recorded to that point. This is all there is. These tracks were transferred to PC in 2001 using a Nakamichi BX-300 tape deck with pitch control and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card. They have since been transferred back and forth between PC and CDR several times, always using EAC.
Tracks 7-15 are from LP. Legend has it that the soundboard tape was stolen from the person recording the show for the Stones. TMOQ's Stones tapes don't circulate, so original vinyl is the best source. I used a red vinyl original with RS-546 REI matrix, played on a Music Hall MMF-7 turntable with an Ortofon OM-20 cartridge, through an Adcom GFP-565 preamp, then into an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card. The transfer was originally done in 2006 and LP surface noise was reduced using Cool Edit Pro 2.1. I also fixed the volume drop at the end of "Midnight Rambler" as much as possible, and rearranged the tracks back to their original running order; TMOQ took it upon themselves to resequence them. For 2007, I have slightly improved the editing and indexing. Artwork is based on Vinyl Gang's "Welcome to New York" CD, which lifts its art from the original TMOQ LP. Please note that the sound on tracks 7-15 is far superior to the best known CD release which is TSP's CD (and LP) from 1989." *Many thanks to the creator of this upgrade.

Nirvana: Fire Extinguisher (Tokyo 1992) Soundboard FLAC

NIRtkyoFr
NIRtokyoBk
Nirvana: Nakano Sunplaza, Tokyo, Japan 2/19/1992 - SBD
[Laura/1CD] -> EAC -> FLAC Frontend
Sound quality is A
This is from BigO (which, by the way, quoted me in one of their articles - I was humbled).
The year Punk broke, Nirvana came to $ingapore knowing their debut mainstream album, Nevermind, was No. 1 in America. This was their first and only trip to the "Far East" and management had decided the only civilised nation to visit in South-east Asia was Singapore. The only thing an insular Kurt Cobain knew about this mysterious geographical theatre was recorded in a journal entry, "(I) found myself realising that I wouldn't be able to get drugs when we got to Japan and Australia." There was something else he found when he arrived in Singapore. He would need a government permit to play there.
No one in the Geffen office in Singapore had the presence of mind to ask Nirvana, before they arrived, whether they would like to play a promo concert here. Instead a contest was organised and the prize was a trip to Japan to watch Nirvana play. But when Cobain was accosted by fans at Changi International Airport and went through the routine of being chased to his tour bus, he wanted to play.
Unfortunately, Nirvana's stay was far too short. An entertainment permit could not be rushed out in time for America's No. 1 band to play here. There were rules to be followed. A list of the songs had to be submitted to the police and the lyrics provided for inspection. The venue had to be safe and properly policed to prevent rioting. It was 1992, the Dark Ages of $ingapore pop culture. Fire Extinguisher is a bootleg of Nirvana's final show in Tokyo at the Nakano Sunplaza on February 19, 1992, after leaving $ingapore. It was also the last time Kurt Cobain would set foot in the Far East. For the hundreds of Japanese who sensed an event and bought tickets, they would be the envy of friends having seen Nirvana live.
The set itself was trimmed of the slower numbers like Something In The Way, Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam and the new Rape Me. Japanese audiences are polite and quiet. Kurt preferred to turn on the punks in the audience with a brief but stormy show. The band is on auto-pilot in the first half with uninspired versions of Been A Son, Come As You Are, Lithium and About A Girl. But just when you think, nothing's going to happen, Kurt finally says something from the stage by way of introducing the next song, School: "...about two days ago, I got really sick. I got this really bad cold...," he tells the audience. "Like a flu, like illness, whatever." Did his Japanese fans understand?
"And ah the doctor," he continues, "gave me this stuff to drink." Cobain's voice is as innocent as an angel's when he tells them just what's in the drink.
"I think it's Chinese herbs and it has cow sperm in it and it's got like lizard penis scrapings and ahh... I feel really sick but it just makes me feel real good to know that I've been drinking cow semen..." His voice trails off as he allows the last words to make its impact. "It makes you feel good." The sarcasm is pointed at an unknown target - doctors, officialdom, record company execs, the man?
The version of School they play tonight is perhaps the most intense. "Won't you believe it, it's just my luck?" Cobain starts, referencing some unhappy recent event. Then comes the reply in the chorus of "no recess, no recess, no recess." Cobain changes it coming in the second time. Now he sings with a sinister tone changing the lyrics to, "drinking cow sperm again... drinking cow sperm again..." He repeats it over and over and then slams the breaks, screaming "no recess, no recess" for the final time. Something has obviously touched an inner chord in him to release the energy. School has always been a song about stultifying conformity. Tonight it's not only the lack of a recess break but the punishment of drinking "cow sperm again" that angers him.
For the rest of the show, the other members are like demons behind their singer. Aneurysm, Love Buzz, Polly, Territorial Pissing and the grand finale of Smells Like Teen Spirit unite the three into one single unit, pounding out pure punk - disreputable, antagonistic, iconoclastic and raging full on. But from all accounts when Kurt Cobain was in Japan, he was happy. He reportedly was quite taken by the outpouring of gifts from the Japanese and requested that they give him only Hello Kitty gifts. He was playful and bought himself new pajamas which he wore on stage. He also met his friends, the Shonen Knife, a trio of Japanese girls whom he had dinner with and later went to see them play.
Earlier, Kurt was reportedly unhappy in Australia where he had stomach pains, possibly a symptom of drug withdrawal. When he visited a hospital there, he was upset when he overheard a nurse describe him as a "junkie." But Kurt Cobain adored Japan for its unique culture. It's fitting that the only document from his Far East tour is this final concert in Japan. - Michael Cheah

The fan recording of a concert is really an extension of taking snapshots of your heroes. Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s recordable media was just making its way into households as a consumer electronic device, either an expensive reel-to-reel deck or a convenient cassette recording deck. Just imagine sneaking one of those into a concert these days. More likely, the stealth recorder of choice today would be a mini-disc recorder or your handphone. Small enough to fit your pocket.
But Michael Millard was different. He arrived early at concerts near his home, pulled out a wheelchair from the boot of his car and proceeded to wheel himself into the arena as an invalid. He managed to secure front row "seats", almost always front and centre. Hidden underneath his wheelchair was a Nakamichi stereo cassette deck hooked up to two high-quality AKG mics. Security guards in those days were probably unaware of such goings on.
His recordings were much sought after for their quality - capturing the expanse of the stage plus the great ambience of the halls. His close proximity eliminated any echo from his recordings. All the instruments recorded right off the front speakers. Plant’s voice is crystal clear. But Millard had a habit of marking his tapes when he copied them for another collector or fan. He would, for instance, lower the levels when transferring the audio to a VHS tape or lower the volume in mid-song when making a cassette copy. It has been said he detested bootleggers who pressed up his recordings onto vinyls or CDs to sell. To that end, he kept a log of all the trades he made with clear indications of what markings he did to the tapes. That way, he knew which of his trades were sent to bootleggers.
He worked as a custodian in a public school. In a fit of depression, he committed suicide in 1990. His friends say he destroyed all copies of his Led Zeppelin recordings. What has survived are the first generation copies he made and shared freely with other Zep fans. These are what are now being traded back and forth.
Millard was active from 1974 to the ‘80s and was said to have taped shows by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jethro Tull and even Kansas. To date, we have never found a copy of his Who or Tull recordings. The non-Zeppelin masters are known to be in possession of Millard’s family. Hopefully, someday they will be shared again.

Quotes from "An illustrated exploration of Underground tapes" by Luis Rey:
-Nobody's fault but mine: During NFBM, Bonzo's always a few bars behind the group, resulting in a really new arrangement of the piece.
-Since I've been living you: A great version includes a dated and gloomy organ accompaniment.
The acoustic section is extended with a nice surprise: Mystery train. Page gets into a few riff of Dancing Days during the Stomp solo.
-Kashmir:An apparently "playful" Bonzo gives the impression of destroying it, always on the edge of a mistake, but finally delivers on of the best-ever performances of the piece.
-Achilles last stand: His erratic playing hits its peak as the end of ALS looses almost any cohesion.
-Stairway to heaven: Page gets into one of his memorable trips during the solo.

The Black Knight featuring The Fishermen (David Gilmour, Rick Wright & Others)

aront-
back
Copenhagen, Denmark - August 1st 1988 (HHOCD001)

This CD contains a previously unreleased mixer board recording of the 2 Floyd performing as “The Fishermen” at a night club in Copenhagen on the early morning of August 1st 1988 (The Floyd played at Gentofte Stadium in Copenhagen on the evening of July 31). The performing artists for the night include David Gilmour (who speaks), Rick Wright (having some difficulties with his Keyboard), Jon Carin, Guy Pratt, Gary Wallis, Scott Page, Durga McBroom and an unidentified second singer. We are not sure if it's Margret Taylor or Rachel Fury.
The band performs several R’N’B covers such as “Respect”, “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love” and “Superstition”. The quality of the tape is generally in very good condition, with a fair amount of tape hiss, which we decided not to remove.
Heres a bit of the story: On the morning of August 1st 1988, several members of the touring Pink Floyd was invited to a small party at Annabels Night Club (Lille Kongensgade 16 at Kongens Nytorv, Copenhagen.). This party was arranged by the Danish branch of EMI, most likely as a Birthday party for the Floyd's personal security manager Barrie Knight. The low-key “Fishermen” gig was most likely not a planned event. Like so many times before “The Fishermen” seem to have taken to the stage using the in-house equipment, in a spur of the moment. The reason I guess this is because the person at the mixer board spend the first 20 minutes of the show struggling to get the different levels up. Guitars, vocals and piano (specifically) go up and down to a point where the otherwise, silent, David Gilmour, barks at the person at the mixer board.
The set for the evening consist of the “usual” Fishermen set of old Rhythm and Blues and motown classics, including Aretha Franklins “Respect” and “Rock Steady” and the unique rendition of Sugarhill Gangs “Rappers Delight” (First and only time you will hear the Pink Floyd play rap music).
The tape was bought on Ebay two months ago from a seller claiming to have gotten the tape from people working for the Danish branch of EMI. The tape also looks to be the original recording. However we believe it to be a 1st or 2nd gen recording.

Tracks:
1.Respect
2. Can't Get Enough
3. Blues
4. My Girl
5. Rock Steady - Rapper's Delight - Le Freak - Rock Steady
6. Master Blaster
7. Superstition

Secret soundboard recording from the summer of 1992, somewhere in Europe. Exact date is unknown, rumor has it that this comes from the 07/31 in Oslo, but surely no proof exists.
You won't believe your ears when you listen to this jewel! This recording has got the same high sound quality like for example the official live CD 'On the Night' with the exception that this is a complete concert (perhaps except for Money For Nothing). The venue and date of this concert is unknown but it is from the summer of 1992 somewhere in Europe. In contrast with On the Night, this is *really* live: no mixing, no overdubbing and with all the little mistakes. Great to have, a must for all true fans! Available on two CD-R's.
