Deep Striker Empress Valley - EVSD 26-29 - 4CD
June 27, 1977 The Forum - Los Angeles, CA.Audio: 9+ AUD
One of the most expensive bootlegs I have ever had the pleasure of owning and an incredibly hard set to locate on the collector market as well. Caution must be given when buying this set as there are bad copies of disc number 3 in circulation. The "bad" disc 3 has a mastering fault and has a 1 second gap in between tracks. The matrix number of the bad disc 3 is TG5093. The matrix number of the corrected disc 3 is TI5060. Be warned when shopping around for this expensive set. I got lucky in that my copy came with both the "good" and "bad" copy of disc 3, so my set contains 5CDs in all and not the standard 4CDs. The package is the "Empress Valley" long box - a hard cardboard block trimmed out in the center to hold the discs. The tray is housed in a glossy cardstock open-ended slipcover. The individual discs are housed in cream paper sleeves with the Empress Valley logo printed in gold on the lower right corner. The last night in the LA Forum in excellent quality courtesy of the late great Mike Millard's fantastic audience source tapes. The tape starts out with the cheering masses anxiously awaiting the start of the show. There are initial tape balance issues, but these seem to be resolved during the soundcheck just prior to the opening of The Song Remains The Same. The source tape is excellent quality - typical of Mike Millard source tapes - it's taped near the stage, is very clear, well balanced and displays an incredible sense of depth. The tape is slightly hissy, but it in no way detracts the recording. There is also a detectable ripple effect audible in some of the quieter parts of the tape - probably an accidental by product of the tape recorder. The opening audience cheer sound as if it has been looped (TDOLZ's Sunset also has this issue) for several seconds extending the hysteria prior to the start of the show. Nobody's Fault But Mine has a seamless tape splice for several seconds at about the 1 minute 42 second mark on the disc. The audio quality remains consistent, but there is a definite variance in tone there - superb splice though. The start of No Quarter contains some quick tape swaps, again seamlessly done. The section of tape after Ten Years Gone is sliced in and lasts until just prior to the start of The Battle Of Evermore. The tape flutter becomes increasingly apparent during the acoustic set but not to the point that it ruins it. At around 4 minutes 5 seconds into Kashmir we switch over to an alternate tape for 9 seconds before seamlessly switching back to the main tape. There also appears to be a several second tape swap in the empty space after Trampled underfoot and another after Bonzo's Over The Top drum solo. Achilles Last Stand contains a cut in the tape that causes audio to be lost. I am fairly certain that there are no available bootlegs that have this section intact. Stairway To Heaven had a number of seamless tape swaps. The last night in L.A. didn't quite have the party atmosphere that was present on the Eddie or Badgeholders nights, but it was a solid show and a worthy addition to any collection. Due to the staggering cost that this set trades for on the collector market though, I have to recommend the TDOLZ title Sunset over this one on the cost factor alone. Unless you have deep pockets or are actively collecting EVSD, I can't see any merit in spending the admission price. Deep Striker is an improvement over Sunset, but given the cost differences between the two sets, it's not that big of an improvement. Track it down on CDR if you just absolutely have to have a copy. If you are in the market to buy, don't forget to verify the matrix number of disc 3 prior to buying. Highlights for me from this show include Sick Again, Ten Years Gone, the acoustic Dancing Days snippet and Achilles Last Stand (tape cut or not!). (Steve Prendergast July 03)
