02. Correct Mic bumps.

05. Speed correct and correct pitch to match Rogoff.
06. Reduce tape hiss.

Remaster (Source 2: Rogoff)
01. Restore clipped sections.
02. Repair hard clicks and pops.
03. Re-balance tonality/EQ.
04. Repair Mic bumps.
05. Attenuate some claps.
06. Attenuate some audience whistles.
07. Correct balance.
08. Patch tape flips with Lampinski source, adds 27 seconds to the recording.
09. Correct speed, comparing to commercial live references and Lampinski source.
10. Correct pitch with Lampinski source.
11. Reduce tape hiss.

Remaster (Full Stereo)
01. Remaster Source 1.
02 Remaster Source 2.
03. Sync sources.
04. Combine recordings and create full stereo image.
05. Correct phasing and center sound.
06. Balance power and amplitude.
07. Cover non-overlap sections with single source.
08. Track as continuous performance.

Notes: Recording begins with 90 seconds of Rogoff source then Lampinski source comes in to produce the stereo image.
Sound quality suggests that the Rogoff mics were hidden at the beginning. Sound is a bit muffled until 45 seconds into Parallels when it becomes more clear at which point the full quality of the stereo recording can be appreciated.
Taper says: "It was probably the point at which enough of the people in front of us sat down to get an unobstructed, on-axis view of the PA. I was using a mike stand made from one leg of a lightweight tripod. It was held in place by a photographer's clamp on the arm of the seat. The stand was connected to the clamp with a wingnut acting as a set screw."
At the end of Close To The Edge and just before the next song (Wonderous Stories) begins, both tapers changed/flipped tapes so there is a brief fade-out/fade-in.
Given the need to patch a 16 second tape flip segment of the Lampinski source with Rogoff source, at this point in the song Awaken, the stereo field converts to single-source and then reverts back to full stereo. Careful listening allows identification of this segment.
Sound characteristics would suggest that Rogoff was further back in the venue than Lampinski who was seated in section 2 row 11. Rogoff remembers being "dead center" but has no documentation of exact seat.

Taper2 comment: There were other people recording this night (at least 2 others). I know there was another TC-152 or TC-158 recording on the right side in the 3rd row. There is also a Nak recording of the show. Quality is very good except there is a girl (probably a grandmother now) hooting between songs. I got caught up in the performance and had to make a cassette flip @ 6:13 mins into Supper's Ready. Otherwise the show is complete. A fresh transfer from my original cassettes.

Disclaimer: This recording should not be confused with the series labelled "The Dan Lampinski Tapes Volume XX". This recording represents part of Dan's earliest efforts to capture the live concert experience for posterity, hence the series name "Dan Lampinski - The Early Years Volume XX". Given the very consistent high quality of Dan's later work, it would have been easy to blow off these recordings and consign them to the dustbin of history, but there are quite a few captures in the series that are well worth circulating, if not for their rarity, but for the obsessive collector types (we know who we are) that want every single second of any recordings of their favourite musicians. So please, just accept these recordings for what they are, another part of the tapestry we weave when we collect and share such things.
Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.
Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.
Always remember - the more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you.

This recording should not be confused with the series labelled "The Dan Lampinski Tapes Volume XX".

NOTES FROM LESTAT: Many, many thanks to Mr. Lampinski, to djscomics and to Mr. Morstadt for their efforts in unearthing what may be the best quality AR of Yes from 1974 and bringing it to us.
Like everyone, I was floored when I heard this recording for the first time. Even raw it surpasses every other pre-1977 Yes AR I’m aware of for sound quality. Taper Dan’s achievement here is unique and speaks for itself.
Even the best raw AR masters made with the best, skill equipment, and media available nearly always have not just flaws but hidden strengths undetectable to most. This one makes a typical example, having some largely correctable weaknesses but more importantly a broad spectrum of detail nearly inaudible in its raw form.
When I upload original sources I make sure such things are dealt with in advance. What was possible with this recording has now been fully attained, and provides its own best illustration of why. It also generated this response from a participant in the remaster ‘beta test’, an integral part of the process -
"I just finished listening to the remastered samples over my main rig, and just did another comparison between the remastered and raw versions on my computer. As always, you have done very fine work on what was already an astounding audience capture for 1974: everything sounds considerably crisper and more defined, and you seem to have tamed a certain upper midrange harshness, making for a more pleasant
listen overall. For me, a standout moment is Howe's solo in "Sound Chaser"-- while listening, I forgot for a moment that I was not right there in the hall. The degree of holographic spatial realism you helped bring out in this tape is extraordinary (and one of the qualities I most appreciate in your mastering). "Close to the Edge" was a joy as well, and your mastering helped bring out the amazing detail in Squire's bass accompaniment at the end of "I Get Up, I Get Down," which adds an element of drama to the climax not found on the studio version.
"Particularly with your careful mastering, this tape is a real holy grail for Yes collectors like myself, who count the 1974 Relayer tour as possibly the peak of Yes live performances. The only other documents of that tour I've heard that even approach this are the Pre-FM version of the same show (which was oddly mixed, had a very harsh midrange, and was missing "Ritual"), and the (in)famous Baton Rouge recording. This release may very well sit at the very top of the heap now in terms of overall quality".
The raw master had a number of issues.
1] Pitch and tempo were both off [fast].
2] Low frequencies with poor definition or nearly absent - a common drawback of condenser microphones but Dan’s was top shelf and it got more than most. They still desperately needed ‘liberation’, as did frequencies in every other part of the spectrum except the very uppermost highs occurring prior to mid-Ritual.
3] Some quite noticeable midrange distortion occurs at different points in the raw upload, especially during Close to the Edge and Ritual. Most likely it’s in the master cassettes and a consequence of age - even well-cared for Maxells don’t last forever - although it may also be a condenser mike issue.
4] A jolting change in sound properties occurs during Ritual, at about 16:45 and constant through Roundabout. It seems likely to have started with a tape flip and probably involves a bias or Dolby switch on the record deck, or possibly a tape manufacture defect. Whatever the cause, symptoms include a severe high frequency dropout, an increase in at least one type of distortion [‘swish’] and weirdly but on the upside better low frequency definition.
All of these mitigated well except the distortion, which can only be treated with signal-damaging compression and not very effectively. While now more detailed along with more desirable sound, it does not overwhelm by any means. The dynamic range transition in Ritual-Roundabout is treated with slightly different EQ settings and less noticeable, with high frequency definition better matching the rest of the recording.
The recording’s especially miraculous hidden tones in several frequencies, including the lows, are now much more apparent. As one example, different cymbal types can now be easily discerned where in the raw recording they’re nearly indistinguishable from each other despite the absolutely fantastic uppermost frequencies [which needed
no work at all]. Other Yessounds, from nonmetal percussion to guitars to keyboards to voices, now have considerably more identity, presence, and detail in all their tones
All work was done at the 24/96 resolution, before downsampling. EQ work designed to reveal detail, as the audience heard and felt it. No attempts to alter band-crowd-venue sound balance. If crowd sound as real and detailed as band sound isn't desired, please pass this by and stick to soundboards or industry releases. No compression or noise reduction.
- Lestat, July 2009

NOTES FROM BARRY (BALROG): Up until the discovery of the Lampinksi tape, the only known audience recording of this show was the one I made with a mono recorder from
the back of the Boston Garden. Once I had a copy of the FM broadcast, I copied the "Missing Ritual," the only song not included in the broadcast, to a reel-to-reel deck. That tape, along with the master tapes, was stored at a friend's house and lost for many years.
Over the years, I received many anxious requests from people wanting to hear the "Missing Ritual" no matter how bad it might be.
Eventually, my friend dug out the reel. I digitized it and shared the raw transfer with everyone who had inquired about it.
I intended to combine Ritual with the FM broadcast to create the first-ever complete concert recording. So I asked every serious Yes trader I could find for the best source of the pro recording. I also tried to find someone with expertise willing to remaster Ritual.
I eventually received 22 different sources and narrowed them down to a "short list" of the five best. I planned to determine the winner using a blind comparison test.
However, no one remastered Ritual. Even Shaun Toole (Tooleman), the best known Yes remastering expert turned it down. Once everyone had heard the recording, it was no longer the famous "Missing Ritual." It was just another audience tape from 1974. Everyone lost interest in the project, including myself. So it sat on the shelf until a few months ago.
What brought it back to life was Lestat's willingness to do the remaster. The sound quality turned out much better than I had hoped. We were planning to upload the project to Dime. But now that the Lampinski recording has surfaced, the "Missing Ritual" project is obviously never going to see the light of day. The Lampinski is vastly superior to my audience recording and I consider it to be superior to
the professional recording made for the FM broadcast.
Some of what I had written for the "Missing Ritual" project may still be of interest. So here's an edited version.
Yes concerts have always had a very special significance in my life and 12/11/74 was my first one. It was also one of the first concerts that I taped from the audience, not knowing that the performance was being professionally recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, a nationally syndicated radio program of live concert performances.
The Relayer album was released on December 5, 1974 less than one week before the concert and roughly a month into the tour. No one in the audience knew the album very well, which was quite unfortunate. Like Tales From Topographic Oceans, the songs on Relayer are much too intense and complex to fully appreciate on the first listen.
Similarly, no one knew how the songs from the other Yes albums would sound with new band member Patrick Moraz on keyboards. I had been listening to Refugee, the album that he had recorded with Brian Davidson and Lee Jackson (formerly of The Nice) for several weeks and knew that Moraz had way too much talent and style of his own to simply fill in for Rick Wakeman.
Hearing the familiar Firebird Suite opening climax into Sound Chaser instead of the anticipated Siberian Khatru might have surprised some of the audience, but no one who was there could have possibly been disappointed with the tight but excellent performance. Make sure to read the concert page on Forgotten Yesterdays.
The original two-part broadcast, hosted by Bill Minkin, in "SQ Matrix" quadraphonic sound was aired only six weeks after the concert. It came as a complete surprise to those who had been there as nothing had been said about it being recorded for an FM broadcast.
SQ Matrix was one of several early matrix schemes from the quadraphonic era. The matrix concept was similar to today's surround sound technologies and SQ is considered by some to be the origin of Dolby Pro Logic.
The broadcast included the entire Yes concert except for one song: Ritual. It also included the entire insipid opening set by Gryphon.
That decision, to omit part of the Yes concert in favor of the entire Gryphon set, has angered countless Yes fans for more than three decades, none more than myself.
The original broadcast and subsequent rebroadcasts have been used as the source of countless collector and commercial "pirate" bootleg cassettes, LPs, and CDs. I have collected images of 21 different pieces of cover art and I'm sure there have been many more. Some contain the full setlist (except Ritual of course) and some are
partial. Some of these bootlegs claim to be from radio station (pre-FM) tapes or LPs. Based on the lack of compression, it's possible that some of these bootlegs are actually pre-FM tapes.

Warning/Disclaimer: This recording should not be confused with the series labelled "The Dan Lampinski Tapes Volume XX".

Dave Brubeck - piano
Paul Desmond - alto sax
Gerry Mulligan - bariton sax
Jack Six - bass
Allan Dawson - drums

The last track turns into O When The Saints Go Marching In, but it indeed is a jam session, on which Brubeck's sons step in, I guess.
So, the additional line-up for the last track:
Peter Madcath Ruth - harmonica
Perry Robinson - clarinet
Chris Brubeck - trombone
and possibly Dan Brubeck - drums, possibly replacing Dawson.

The performance well represents the quality of their performances at that time; Brubeck is obviously having a good night and a lot of energy! He would tour with several groups at the same time. As I understand it, he was billed as The Brubeck Trio, or alternatively The Brubeck Trio with Mulligan and Desmond, or Two Generations of Brubeck.
O When The Saints here is by Two Generations of Brubeck.

Yes: Providence 1977 (PRRP Remasters of Rogoff AND Lampinski) FLAC

PRRPSAE 08 Yes 1977 08 15 Providence Booklet Cover
And now we have Two!!
In 2009, the Lampinski team set out to make available many master tape recordings from the Dan Lampinski collection. One of these recordings was made in Boston on June 18th, 1975 at the performance of Pink Floyd. Steve Hopkins was also at that event and recorded the show as well. PRRP has provided a remastered version of each recording along with a written account of the similarities and differences between the two. Now, we have that same opportunity again. PRRP 034 was our initial remaster of Barry Rogoff's outstanding recording of Yes performing in Providence, Rhode Island on August 15th, 1977. In 2009, as part of the Lampinski project, the Dan Lampinski recording of the same show was made available. This, again, gave PRRP a rare opportunity to remaster both recordings and offer the unique listening experience of the same concert, from two different points of view.
Barry Rogoff tells us that he was in the 5th row for this concert while the ticket stub from Dan Lampinski shows that he was in section 2, row J, a bit further back. Both were experienced tapers using almost identical equipment -as noted in our info files. With both recordings, the gaps in each could be filled using material from the other. This was done to provide the most accurate audio document of the events of that evening. For example, the original PRRP remaster of Rogoff's recording did not patch the missing section at the first tape flip. This has now been done as a new remaster of Rogoff's tapes has been completed for this project. Further, there is over 5 minutes of thunderous applause after the song Roundabout at the end of the concert. This segment was not only restored to the Lampinski recording but was tracked as a separate segment for both recordings to highlight its importance. The length of this applause must have forced the band back on stage for one more song, Yours is no Disgrace, You can sense the audience practically demanding that Yes return to the stage as the applause continues and builds. For those who have actually experienced this type of event, it can be as moving as the music itself.
The presence of both recordings also allows proper judgments to be made about EQ and the speed of the tapes. Both characteristics were corrected by comparing one to the other and comparing the end result to commercial live and studio references. These adjustments were not made during the PRRP 034 remaster of Rogoff's tapes. There has been discussion on the DIME forum of synchronizing the two tape sources for a matrix recording. Given that Barry Rogoff was very close to the stage and Dan Lampinski was quite a distance away, this would make most sense in a 5.1 surround project with the Lampinski source in the back channels. Still, completely synchronizing these two tapes would be an extensive task. For this PRRP offering, the two recordings were speed corrected and matched for runtime down to the second; but no attempt was made to match them to the millisecond. All track times are identical for the show except the first track which is longer in the Rogoff recording than in Lampinski's by about 80 seconds. Mr. Rogoff began his recording before Mr. Lampinski but both men terminated their recordings at almost the exact same time, within 2 seconds of each other. Ironic. More details on the two remasters and the differences between the PRRP 034 Rogoff remaster and this new version can be found in the info files.
Below is the original description of the show from Barry Rogoff.
“As hockey rinks go, the Providence Civic Center has good acoustics. However, the PA system levels and the mix were all over the place. Later on, I read that Yes had a substitute sound man on that tour. He had high-end hearing loss which explains why the mix is so bright. (PRRP: we fixed this is the remaster process) As far as levels, the Firebird opening was okay, but when the band started playing Parallels, you could hardly hear them. The sound man was trying to let people get used to the volume slowly and overdid it. He kept nudging up the volume during All Good People. It actually got a little too loud at one point, then came back down. I was taking photographs and had an experienced friend (a Deadhead) monitoring the levels on my deck. He did his best to compensate for what was happening. Close to the Edge and Wondrous Stories were okay but the sound man jacked up the volume for the silly tour song (Colours of the Rainbow) and then dropped it way back down for Turn of the Century. (PRRP: Again, fixed in the remaster process) I think my friend was wasted by then. The levels were a little on the low side for the rest of the show.”
“…When the show started, the ushers allowed all the rowdys from the cheap seats to rush down to the stage and jam themselves into every inch of space. They were all jumping up and down, the whole building was literally shaking, and the crowd noise was unbelievable. Then, the people in the front row decided to stand up on their rickety wooden chairs, which was completely unnecessary. You can hear the people behind them yelling at them to sit down.”
“…In spite of all that, the band was on fire that night. Steve played wailing solos on Starship Trooper and Yours Is No Disgrace. I think they're the best versions I've heard other than the Close To The Edge tour in 73. Rick was superb on Close to the Edge and Awaken. Awaken was recorded on a C120 tape so it's a complete, uncut version. I've also been told by several Yes traders that it's one of a very few 100% complete Going For The One concerts with no side change in Awaken….”
“I was standing on a rickety wooden chair trying to hand-hold a 300mm telephoto lens for close-ups while the whole building was literally shaking throughout the night. Towards the end of the show, I had run out of film and was watching through binoculars, again, from the fifth row. Jon nudged Chris and pointed at me, laughing at the crazy guy who just couldn't see enough Yes up close. I miss those days.”

Remaster
1. Click and pop repair
2. Minimize and repair claps during music segments
3. Gentle Hiss reduction
4. Repair tape flips and cuts in recording using Rogoff source, restoring missing segments.
5. Dynamic adjustments to correct for peak suppressions, particularly due to loud claps
6. Adjust tonality/EQ. Taper location caused excess bass and other tonal imbalances that needed correcting
7. Reduce whistles, claps and yells by audience members
8. Speed correct and match to recording by Rogoff
9. Tracking set to be consistent with Rogoff recording with no fadeout at end of disc 1

Notes:
"sit down, sit down" much less noticable than Rogoff version.
Bass distortion during And You and I
loud clapper to the left of taper.
