Patti Smith: Hamburg 1996 (FM) FLAC

by request
Artwork - front
1 August 1996 - Musikhalle, Hamburg
German FM radio broadcast

OU: This is a great show which has appeared several times in various formats (audience and FM). I initially wanted to tone down the DJ comments, which were a bit loud but otherwise not too intrusive, and realigned the two CDs, so that the announcements come at the end of each disc. Since then, however, I have discovered the joys of audiofile.exe, and put anything too long for a single CD onto single DVD-Audio. So I removed the DJ comments entirely. Then I found that the last track broadcast, "Crystal Ship", was in fact played after "About a Boy". So I edited it back into its original place. Fortunately, the applause is suspiciously similar after each song (i.e. mixed in by the radio station people), so it was all fairly straightforward. Except "Dancing barefoot", which had a drop in volume at around 0:20 for 30 seconds - a piece may have been edited in, as the EQ changes to a drop in bass and a loss of echo. I raised the volume and applied some EQ to match the rest of the track. After a few tries over the years, I've managed to get it to a reasonably smooth flow.
Other edits -
- A small gap between "Gloria" and "Farewell Reel" has been removed.
- "Beneath the Southern Cross" had a pop at 0:21 which has been removed. A couple of others in other tracks have also been removed ("Wing" at 0:55, "About a Boy" at 1:20, among others).
- The band intro has been combined with "Because the Night".
- The "People have the Power" / "Gone Again" medley has been split into two tracks.
- Before "Because the Night", the brief "Please be my Guy" (?) is sung off-key at the end as a joke. It has been made into a separate track.
- The "When Doves Cry" / "Ain’t it Strange" medley has not been split, as it goes back to the lyrics of the first song towards the end. This song starts abruptly, with some hesitation between the channels, which I corrected using a repeat of the same drum beat.

As the show heats up, the volume increases, but a bit of distortion creeps in, either at source or from the taper, and there is tape hiss throughout. Having said that, it's a tremendous build up to the last tracks (though the encores are quieter).
There are a couple of tracks played missing from this version, which are bracketed below.

01. Wing <4:53>
02. People Have the Power <4:04>
03. Dancing Barefoot <5:24>
04. Summer Cannibals <4:00>
(Smoke on the Water)
05. Wicked Messenger <4:28>
06. Ghost Dance <5:02>
07. Beneath the Southern Cross <5:36>
(Hands of Faith - Lenny)
08. Redondo Beach <4:32>
09. Free Money <4:23>
10. About a Boy <10:02>
11. The Crystal Ship <3:13>
12. When Doves Cry / Ain’t it Strange <10:10>
13. Wild Leaves <5:39>
14. People Have the Power <2:14> >
15. Gone Again <4:40>
16. Please Be my guy <0:26>
17. Because the Night + Band Intro <4:00>
18. Land/Gloria <9:52>
19. Farewell Reel <3:46>
Total time 96:24

Lineage: Onkyo FM tuner > Onkyo Tapedeck(analogue) > PC music cleaning lab > CDR > EAC > Flac > wav > Nero > wav > Cool edit pro > wav > flac (aligned on SBs)

Original notes - Ok , tis is it , my first upload here. I picked out this performance from Patti Smith from 1996. This is my own recording I and I think the sound quality is very good. I picked this one for the fantastic performance from Patti Smith and Band Outstanding for me is the performance of "When Doves Cry ". I could not create checksums , although I tried very hard. Artwork included.
If you want to split it into two discs, 1-11 and 12-20 would be the way to go. As it stands, it's ready to go onto one DVD-Audio seamlessly, but there's a CD version of Track 11 with a fade-out at the end.

Patti Smith: New York City 2004 (Soundboard/Aud Matrix) FLAC

ps2004-12-29front
December 29, 2004 - Bowery Ballroom, New York City, USA

OU: *SBD/AUD Matrix mix*
I beg you, please do everything you can to keep this recording from showing up someplace like eBay, because I'd love to be able to share more of AJ's great work, and I will share more of his Patti Matrix mixes only under this condition: Absolutely no selling! If the band's wishes in this are disregarded, the well becomes dry, period. So please share freely only to those who will only share freely.
SQ: Very good, I rate it between "B+" and "B" (I grade hard and use all the letters ABCDF); instruments sound better than vocals. The original posting of this torrent received 159 Snatches and remained on the tracker 468 days.
Edited and mixed by AJ; many thanks AJ!
*Lineage*
SBD/AUD Matrix mix CDR I got by mail directly from AJ>EAC>Sound Forge>FLAC(level 8)
AUD source: Senn404 mics
Artwork included; many thanks to G. The C-ck for creating the very cool artwork!
(All the jpegs and FLAC files are identical to those in the original files. I had to remove the .txt suffix from the Fingerprint filename, so I added the .md5 checksum and changed the info.txt file.)

Patti Smith: San Francisco 1976 (FM) FLAC

ps19760215rm-front
Full info from bootlegzone:
Patti Smith - Live 1976-02-15 San Francisco, Boarding House (FM)

HQ Scans: Front insert (2 folds - in & outside)Back insert (1 fold - outside) Publisher: Coyote
Date: 2007
Quality: FM radio
Total duration: 56:34

Patti Smith's performance at the Boarding House, San Francisco, California, on 15 February 1976, as broadcast of FM radio. There were several versions of this circuating, which have been speed corrected, EQ'ed and edited together to create the best-sounding complete version in May 2007 - this in turn was given a going over to tweak a few remaining glitches that August.

From the notes of its creator, coyote - "Highly recommended, much of it sounds great, it's my favorite Patti recording. According to http://setlists.pattismithlogbook.info/ there were 2 shows on this date; it is unknown if this recording is from the first or the second show. This is a significant upgrade. I've remastered all of, and made fixes to, the previous (May 2007) version. Only the artwork remains the same. I prefer as little processing as possible, but while listening a million times I found more was necessary.
First version
This combines 3 incomplete sources, all from FM broadcast on KSAN -
Source 1 (~32 minutes): CDR. Excellent, I rate it "A" (in places it varies as low as "B+")
Source 2 (~2 minutes): from WAV files. Good, I rate it "B" (I grade hard and use all the letters ABCDF)
Source 3 (~22 minutes): from WAV files. OK, I rate it "B-"
Patching and remastering: WAV>Cool Edit Pro 2.1>FLAC(level 8)
Source 1 of this complete "best" version is the excellent-SQ version in circulation. It's 42 minutes long, but unfortunately the last 10 minutes are corrupted by digital noise and distortion, so here it is patched with other sources. Towards the end of the uncorrupted part of Source 1, I remastered to balance level fluctuations (for 1 minute 2 seconds starting 1 second into Louie Louie).
Source 3 is the last 22:31 (from the middle of Pumping to the end), where it sounds better than Source 2.
Source 2 (53:56) was patched by Vineland from other sources. I used Source 2 to patch numerous gaps in Source 1, mostly between songs (I'll speculate that many of these gaps might be the result of edits before the rebroadcast). The gaps are: the first 5 seconds, 5 sec @2:16, 6 sec @2:26, 5 sec @6:36, 0.2 sec patching diginoise@27:08, 14 sec @30:09, 36 sec @32:16, and 55 sec @33:05. Most of the gaps weren't obvious, including the 14 seconds@30:09 in the middle of Pale Blue Eyes. Many thanks to Vineland also for Source 2 and Source 3 (and Source 4 which was not used)!
Second version -
1. Source 1 was remastered to balance level drops, with special attention to many spots where I improved levels or the mix.
2. Both sources used for the first 6 seconds faded in; I raised the levels to 'unfade' them, fixing some noise that became audible in doing so.
3. During the talk between the first two songs, t1 between 2:48 and 3:11 the levels had jumped up too high so I lowered them to match.
4. I eliminated a half-second of overlap t6@3:11
5. I patched a glitch on Source 3 with Source 2 t12@7:01
Absolutely no selling! Please share freely. Please only convert to mp3 for your own use. Please support the artists.
