Don't Forget

Don't forget to live
...and don't forget that tonight Rapidshare will remove any files that haven't been downloaded for 60 days.
I lost 70GB of files when they went from no delete to a 90 day policy. Who knows what will happen tomorrow. So grab those files while they are there.

The Surgeon General has reported that file downloading causes significantly fewer hangovers than alcohol consumption but both can be known to disrupt sleep patterns ;)

In any case a happy and prosperous New Year to you all.

Thanks for all the varied support throughout the last year...a new decade awaits!
Dave

Pink Floyd: The Wall, February 8, 1980 (MoLM Remaster) shn

Front
Los Angeles Sports Arena, 2nd performance of the tour. Second night of seven scheduled performances.
First of the seven Wall show roios re-released as "THE DEFINITIVE WALL SERIES" in early 2001 by Man of Leisure Music (MoLM). These seven shows were chosen because of their high quality, unique features and, at the time, very low circulation.
This particular show had leaked out through a small number of trades, probably as much as three years before it was put out on the Floylive listserv.
Sourced and carefully re-mastered by Dan Kraft, aka Danalog.
More work went into this one than all the others combined. At least, that's the way I remember Dan describing to me all the tweaks he made to this show to clean it up, correct the speed and bring out fuller sound.
There are many reasons why this show is such a keeper. The obvious one is that the boys pulled off a much better show than the night before. (It's nice they didn't ignite the curtain this time.) This is also clearly the second best sound quality
Wall roio of the six shows that have circulated from the California gigs, 13Feb80 being the best.
There are interesting nuances to it, including what I would consider to be one of the coolest jams of the concert series! Another Brick part 3 (set one, track 12) is drawn out to an incredible 7 minutes, 45 seconds to give Wall builders that had fallen behind more time to catch up. The recorded music of the children singing during Another Brick part two fails to happen (set one, track 5, about one minute in) and the band kicks in and improvises. During Hey You, Dave sings both verses, when normally, Dave sings the first and Rog sings the second.
Originally, about 20 clones of the master copy were weeded or traded out in .wav format using EAC to rip and NTI CD-Maker to burn. Now, MoLM has embarked upon archiving all our releases in shn. Enjoy.

This is a really good audience recording. I'll leave that to you to judge. The quality is excellent for its age and there are a few slight drop outs here and there (again, these are on the original tape).
This show runs for 1 hour and 20 minutes so will fit on one cd

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice - Jesus Christ Superstar: Providence 1974 (Dan Lampinski Audience Master) FLAC (FIXED)

megaupload links fixed - see note.
JCS 1974-12-13-fr v2
Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970 rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The album musical is a musical dramatisation of the last week of the life of Jesus Christ, beginning with his entry into Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion.
The album’s story is based in large part on the Synoptic Gospels and Fulton J. Sheen’s Life of Christ, which compares and calibrates all four Gospels. However, greater emphasis is placed on the interpersonal relationships of the major characters, in particular, Jesus, Judas and Mary Magdalene. Much of the material is non-biblical.

A VERY strange thing happened at megaupload. It accepted all 7 files but named two of them part 2, two of them part 5, and two of them part 7. The previous links will all work if you know which ones to rename but I suggest a redownload. I downloaded and extracted the files and they all work perfectly now.

Pink Floyd: Earls Court 1981 (Ex- Aud) shn FIXED

17Jun81 cover
"The Handwriting on the Wall"
Recorded Live at Earls Court Arena
June 17th, 1981
Outstanding Sound Quality
Audience Recording
A Man of Leisure Music (MoLM) Production www.molm.org

***** EXCELLENT ALTERNATE SOURCE ***** (mastered directly from the source tape)
Mastered to CD from the original tape and speed corrected by Danalog of Man of Leisure Music (MoLM) www.molm.org It's likely the original tape recording machine's calibration was slightly off. MoLM got the master tape on loan from Carzi, who got it from the taper. Recorded with a Technics Single Point Stereo Microphone and a Sony TC153SD Cassette deck.
This recording has less audible background audience than the more common Golden Stars/MoLM source. It tends to have a fuller range of sound, but slightly less bass than the more circulated source from this date. This is the same taper who is known to have recorded 04Nov73, 16Nov74, 17Nov74, 06Aug80 and 17Jun81.
Compared to the incredible 06Aug80 recording, he's further back in the crowd, so the sound is just a bit more distant in nature. The August 1980 recording may be the best recording, but this last Wall show is a hard performance to beat.

This collection begins with the ten tracks that comprise the self titled album from Buckingham Nicks, their only commercially released album. While the album saw several vinyl issues, spurred on in part by curiosity after Mac became hugely successful, it has never seen any legitimate commercial release in the digital age. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks own the full rights to the album and have come close to releasing it several times. Sources close to the pair state that Stevie very much wants it to be released but that Lindsey is the reluctant party.
The source for these tracks as they appear here is the original DLedin 16 bit vinyl rip of the album. This effort is considered to be one of the few consensus “must haves” in the crowded internet music trading pool. This is due not only to the fact that the album has never been released on CD (some bootleggers have made quite a bit of money as a result), but also because the quality of DLedin’s work here is
magnificent. It is significantly better than any of the myriad for profit bootlegs that have materialized over the years. In fact, as bold of a statement as it may seem, there is ample evidence to suggest that a commercial CD release from the original master tape would fail to live up to the lofty aural standard set by the “needledrop”. First off, original album producer Keith Olsen stated that when preparing the digital master for an aborted 1999 release of the work, it was
necessary to bake the master reel due to oxide flaking of the tape. This statement could lead one to assume with some probability that even ten years ago the analog master had suffered some deterioration. Even more compelling evidence can be found by way of two tracks that have seen commercial distribution. The first s “Stephanie” from the promotional compact disc “Lindsey Buckingham Words and Music”. The second is “Long Distance Winner” which appeared on Stevie’s “Enchanted” box set. Please find those tracks and compare them to their corresponding offerings here. The results will speak for themselves.
Tracks eleven and twelve are Galemark vinyl rips of two BN singles. The first,
“Crying in the Night”, is more than a simple remix. The original session for the album track is retained, but is augmented with at least two extra guitar tracks from Lindsey (and/or perhaps session ace Waddy Wachtel) and some additional backing vocals. As a result, the song takes on a more aggressive nature that belies the
album’s laid back SoCal feel. The second single included here is “Don’t Let Me Down Again”. This one is not a rerecording or remix, but simply a single edit which relieves the track of twenty seconds of soloing at the end, making it more “radio friendly”. This drop came from a white label promo 45, having the stereo edit on one side and a mono fold down on the flip side. The mono is chosen here to present the song in it’s full 1970’s AM transistor radio glory!
The next six tracks are demo recordings which have circulated extensively under the misnomer “The Coffee Plant Demos”. This title is in reference to a small storeroom in the San Francisco coffee plant of Lindsey’s father, where they installed a used Ampex four track recorder. “Sorcerer” and “Garbo” are widely reported to have
been written after the couple moved to Los Angeles, and the tapes themselves have several characteristics that allude to them having multiple points of origin.
As odd as the title of this bootleg is, the configuration in which the songs are offered is even more unusual. The most common version of the bootleg presents seven songs. Each song is repeated for a total of fourteen tracks. Several of the tracks appear in two variations, one track with vocals and guitar only and another with
the same vocal track and bass only (as an example, they vary from song to song). Some of the songs appear twice in the same configuration, but are titled as being different (the original bootlegger may have not had very acute hearing or perhaps wanted to pad the track count). Why the tracks circulate in this form remains a mystery, but one possible explanation is that Lindsey had distributed these mixes to other members of the Buckingham Nicks touring band as a rehearsal tool, showing each player what he wanted for a given song. The songs with distinct mixes are the ones likely recorded in LA, while the others may have come from the coffee plant tapes. One song that appears on the bootlegs, “Goldfish and Ladybug” sounds as if it was recorded on an office type cassette recorder with a built in microphone. The vocals are quite distorted and the guitar is very distant in the mix. For these reasons the track was not a good candidate for remastering and is not offered here.
The fourteen track configuration is the most common way that these tracks circulate, but some enterprising individuals, realizing that the same vocal appeared on each version, have attempted to line up the tracks into a “pseudo-stereo” (sometimes referred to as “true stereo”). This offers a more complete mix, but suffers from an overly pronounced vocal track and of course a terribly inappropriate stereo soundscape. Galemark sought to relieve these problems by starting with a new
pseudo stereo alignment of the tracks. From this the goal was to perform isolations of the vocals and instruments. The vocal isos were not very good, but the instrumental versions came out with varying degrees of success. From this point, the pseudo stereo tracks and the instrumental isos were dumped into ProTools to create a four track that served as the basis for what is presented here. If the bass
appeared in the left channel of the fake stereo version, an amount of the bass iso was mixed to the right. Since the iso is mostly fundamental, the attack of the note still came from the left, but the expanse of the sound came from both channels. Similar decisions were made for each instrument in each mix down. This approach relieves many of the problems that have always been inherent in these tapes.
The volume balance is greatly improved and the stereo image is much more natural. Finally, literally hundreds of tape dropouts were corrected and a dusting of EQ and spot noise reduction was employed.
The notion that these songs are musically significant and not simple historical curiosities is borne out not merely by opinion, but by the fact that four of the six songs were resurrected at later points in the BN/FM saga. “Sorcerer” and
“Candlebright (aka Nomad)” were returned to as part of Ms. Nicks’ 2001 album
“Trouble in Shangri-La”.
They appear as two of the five Sheryl Crow produced tracks. Ms Crow is a voracious student of rock history and an unabashed Stevie Nicks fan, who once said that “Stevie bridges the gap between…Janis Joplin and Grace Slick, and what’s going on today”. Perhaps Sheryl was already familiar with these demos and suggested that the lost songs merited proper treatment. “Garbo” appeared in 1983 as the b-side of
Stevie’s “Stand Back” single and can still be found on the “Enchanted” box. Two years prior Fleetwood Mac revisited “That’s Alright” on their “Mirage” album. That leaves only two tracks that remain on the shelf. “Cathouse Blues” demonstrates that Lindsey’s finger picking technique is well suited to a style in which it is not often utilized. “Without You” serves as an apt coda to this set of demos. Lyrics like “If I’d not heard your laughter, maybe I wouldn’t love you. If I’d not sung
your music, I’d not come rolling after you” foreshadow their later use of lyric as autobiographical therapy session that became so famous in songs like “Go Your Own Way”.
Speaking of foreshadowing, the last three tracks of this set are fascinating in large part for the way in which they point to the future. This small live set remarkably is not the only live recording that exists of Buckingham Nicks, but is far and away the one with the best quality. Even with a good basic tape to work with, Galemark still had a lot of remastering work to do. The tape suffered many dropouts, not just the fine and complete type, but also large patches of tape where there was mal-alignment, causing fluctuations in the frequency curve. These were corrected or minimized as much as possible.

The Rolling Stones: The 1978 Woodstock Rehearsals

Classic Rock Bootleg

Prior to their 1978 US Tour from late May to early June the Rolling Stones took up residence for approximately two weeks in the tiny village of Woodstock in upstate New York at Todd Rundgren's Bearsville Studio for rehearsals (like normal bands do)
They were joined by Sugar Blue on harp and Ian McLagen on keyboards. During these sessions they not only rehearsed material from their latest LP's they also tried out some nifty Rock n Roll/blues numbers from way back when.
And yes they even did the odd rarity "C...sucker Blues" and briefly laid their sweaty hands on early Jagger/Richards compositions like Play With Fire and Tell Me. Plus it's all in Glorious studio soundboard stereo!
In general the sound quality is great but it does vary a bit across the two discs so I have included a short sample of a tune that I picked at random for demonstration purposes...the link to it is below.

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.
He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.
Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.
Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.
Always remember - the more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you. Kev & Carl June 2009

Lineage: 2 x Sennheiser MD-421 > Uher 4200 reel recorded at 19 ips > Audio CD > EAC > FLAC
The taper, Victor, used the following setup to record both shows: 2 x Sennheiser MD-421 > Uher 4200 reel recorded at 19 ips. Concerning his rig at the time, he had the following to say about it...
"I had my UHER "custom unbuilt" in multiple parts, so I could sneek it in more discretely. Then I built a whole "neck-holder" (like the ones Bob Dylan'd use to hold the harp), a heavy construction sewed in a tough-tissued jacked (often way to hot to bear at concerts...) and the two mics were placed niftily beside each ear hidden by the dutiful long hear..."
He said he has never released these shows directly from the master tapes, but did say, specifically concerning the 11/21/70 show, that “the ‘compilations’ I spoke about, we made them on cassettes only, so if it's the compilations circulating, it very much looks like that probably somebody copied them from these cassettes = 2nd or even 3rd generation.” He did mention that he used to have a number of parties and that, quite likely, what we have in our collections comes from someone copying this “compilation” tape, which would mean that most lineage we have could possibly be bogus.
Him and a buddy of his would usually record the same show and then combine their smaller, 13cm reels into a large reel by splicing their masters together. He describes their method as follows...
"Since we had both a Revox at home that can take the big reels as opposed to the UHER which can only take 13 cm spools and one big reel can hold up to 3 (or 4) small spools, we always recorded on the UHER Side 1 of spool A, and then Side 1 of Spool B and then Side 1 of Spool C and then Side 1 of spool D and then continued the recordings (either he or me) continuously on Side 2 of Spool D and then Side 2 of Spool C and then Side 2 of Spool B and then Side 2 of Spool A. When all spools were full, we scotched them together on one big reel... We never wasted expensive tape to copy onto. Especially since we're really buddies (from childhood), if either one of us wanted to listen to the tape, he'd have it, no problem. So why bother copy (except excerpts on cassette)?"
The transfers required Victor to do some repairs to his reel deck and bake the tapes, which he said took him about three days.
Thanks to Victor for the recording and transfer. Thanks to Travis for setting this all up. And thanks to the Y! and AFG forum communities for pitching in.
Enjoy! RonToon (December 2009)

LZ Live at Clive’s
For two days, Southampton was blessed with the presence of the world’s top rock band.
On the first, it was the turn of the town, with Led Zeppelin blowing the minds of 2500 fans at the Gaumont. But the next day, our heroes came to the Union, and played to us in the Black Hole of Calcutta, or Old Ref. as it is sometimes known.
The Gaumont concert had been pretty tight, but not as good as I would have expected from a band that had been on the road for the past two months. But all my doubts were dispelled the next day.
I don’t know if it was the atmosphere, or just being right at the front of the audience, but the Old Ref. concert was just fantastic. There’s no other word for it.
They enjoyed it, and we enjoyed it, and that’s what matters.
As usual, they were a bit slow to warm up – in fact ‘Rock n Roll’, their opening number, was very rough, and the next, ‘The Lady’, a track from LZ 5, wasn’t much better either.
‘Black Dog’ followed, and the audience joined in instantly on the ah-ah-aaah chorus, whereas it took the Gaumont audience a couple of goes to get it right.
LZ were beginning to cook. ‘Misty Mountain Hop’ and ‘Since I’ve Been Loving You’ came next, giving John Paul Jones a chance to show us his dexterity on the keyboards. Until ‘Loving You’, Jimmy Page had been churning out the riffs to make his numbers boogie, but on this one he gave us his first solo, very fast one second, and slow the next, getting everything out of each note.
Just to watch him moving his fingers up and down the fretboard made me very envious – he must have some natural gift. ‘Dancing Days’ and ‘The Song Remains The Same’, the two new numbers were the next, the first, a straight rocker very much in the LZ style, and the second, a longish complex number starting and finishing with some low tempo-melodic guitar playing, and connected with a heavy rocking bit and a superb organ solo from John Paul Jones.
The next number Robert Plant dedicated to the manager of the Gaumont – ‘Dazed and Confused’. This, a track from their first album, was used as a showpiece for Page’s long guitar solo. For part of this he used a big bow, and the highlight was when he hit the strings and got the note to echo back to him. When he’d been playing for about 10 minutes, the rest of the band joined in and stretched the number out to about 25 minutes.
Next was a beam of clear, white light, as Plant called it, ‘Stairway To Heaven’. Plant’s vocals, which had been a bit hidden by page’s guitar before, came through beautifully, the song gradually rising to the peak of that superb rocking ending. That got everybody on their feet, and shouting for every LZ number under the sun. But Plant asked everybody to shut up for a moment, while he told them about his visit to the toilet.
On the bog wall, he saw this name – Alan Whitehead – and this next number was dedicated to him. It was ‘Whole Lotta Love’. The band went into a numer of old rock and roll tunes, then ‘I Can’t Quit You Babe’, and back to ‘Whole Lotta Love’ for a tremendous climax to the show. A few minutes clapping, and they were back to give us ‘Heartbreaker’, and then ‘Thank You’, featuring John Paul Jones with a long organ intro., and back for a third time.
Plant said how much they’d enjoyed the gig, and then they proceeded to play ‘How Many More Times’, the first time they’d done it for two and a half years. But youd’ never have known it, it was so tight.
Straight into ‘Communications Breakdown’, and then it was all over. See you again, they said, and a very nackered goodnight.
This was the only gig they recorded on the whole tour – because they reckon the acoustics of the old Ref are good – and after the show Jimmy Page said there would probably be a live album later this year. Let’s hope so – it’d be a great souvenir of a great show."

Led Zeppelin: Cabala 1963-1988 (8 CD Set) FLAC

ledzeppelincabala12fronfh9
8 CDs covering Zed Zeppelin and relevent pre-Led Zeppelin material, dating from roughly 1963 through 1988.
Quality is variable, but all very listenable.

Disc One:
01. I’m Confused – Was one of the first numbers Led Zeppelin added to their set after beginning their career as the New Yardbirds. They soon changed the name of the song to “Dazed and Confused”. This version was recorded in 1968 at the Anderson Theater for one of Pages final performances with The Yardbirds.
02. Train Kept A Rollin’ – Was another song Zeppelin played during their first American Tour in 1969. The track was recorded live in New York in 1968 with Jimmy Page and The Yardbirds.
03. She Just Satisfies – Is the first solo release from James Patrick Page. Originally released in 1965 under the name of Jimmy Page, this record is now incredibly scarce. The song was written and produced by Page. The track features Jimmy on all the instruments and lead vocals.
04. Keep Movin’ – An R&B instrumental is the B-side to 21-year old Jimmy Page’s first solo release. The single was issued only in England on Fontana Records.
05. You Better Run – Is the first recording featuring a 19-year old Robert Anthony Plant. The single was released in 1966 and issued under the name of Plant’s group Listen. The track is a cover version of a Rascals tune which was later recorded by Pat Benatar.
06. Everybody’s Gonna Say – Is the B-side to Robert Plant’s first solo single. The band originally called themselves The Tennessee Teens, but changed their name to Listen. This is the first track crediting Robert Plant as songwriter.
07. Our Song – Was Robert Plant’s first solo single issued under his own name. The single was released only in England in mid-1967.
08. Long Time Coming – Was the third and final Robert Plant solo release before joining Led Zeppelin. The track was recorded by The Band of Joy in late-1967. The group included a 19-year old drummer named John Henry Bonham.
09. I’ve Got A Secret – Is the B-side to the Band of Joy’s only recording. This track also features John “Bonzo” Bonham on drums.
10. Goodnight Sweet Josephine – Was the A-side to the Yardbirds final recording with Page. The song has never appeared on any Yardbirds album and features Jimmy’s first experiments with a phased guitar.
11. Think About It – Is the B-side to The Yardbirds last single. Released in 1968, the track was never included on any album and is quite scarce. If you listen to Page’s guitar solo, you’ll hear where he got the idea for the middle of “Dazed and Confused”.
12. Hey Hey What Can I Do – Is the only track Led Zeppelin released as a single, but never included on any of their LP’s. The song was originally released as a B-side to “The Immigrant Song”.
13. Psychodasies – Is one of three Yardbirds tracks featuring Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page on guitars. This track has never been released in America, or included on any Yardbirds album.
14. Happenings Ten Years Times Ago – Was the first Yardbirds track to feature both Beck and Page on dual lead guitar.
15. Stroll On – Was the only Yardbirds track specifically recorded for a film. The song was intended for the 1967 movie “Blow Up”. The cut is basically “Train Kept A Rollin’” with different lyrics. The tune includes both Beck and Page on guitars.
16. My Babe Left Me – Is one of the earliest recording sessions featuring Jimmy Page on guitar. The single written by Arthur Cruddop is a remake of an Elvis Presley Sun records classic. The track was recorded in early 1963 with Dave Berry and the Cruisers.
17. A Certain Girl – Recorded by The First Gear features Page on guitar in 1964. The tune was popular with the British groups of the era including The Yardbirds, who also recorded it with Eric Clapton.
18. Leave My Kitten Alone – Is the B-side to “A Certain Girl”. It’s an outstanding British pop record. In 1964 the song was recorded by several British bands including the Beatles. The session was produced by Shel Talmy who also produced records for The Kinks and The Who.
19. Surprise Surprise – Was recorded by Page in 1965. The record was released by Lulu and The Luvvers. The track is a cover version of an often overlooked Rolling Stones number. Lulu later went on to fame as a pop singer with songs like “To Sir With Love”, but she began her career as an R&B singer with Page backing her up on guitar. (Godwin states that Lulu is not performing this version)
20. How Do You Feel – Was one of the final recordings featuring Page as a session guitarist. Recorded in 1966 by The Primitives, this track captures the true raw sound and feel of British rock bands of the era.
21. Jim’s Blues – Was released on an album by PJ Proby “Three Week Hero”. It was the first record including all the members of Led Zeppelin. The album was recorded several months before “Led Zeppelin I”.
22. Traveling Riverside Blues – Was originally recorded for “Led Zeppelin II”. For some unknown reason, the track remained an unreleased outtake for over twelve years.
23. You Shook Me – no details given
24. The Girl I Love – no details given (ed: later appeared on official release “BBC Sessions” as “The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair”)
(Tracks 22-24 London June 16, 1969)
