Frank Zappa: The New Year's Eve Tape 1973 Sources (FM) FLAC

sician-photo-3
"The New Year's Eve Tape" broadcast 1974-12-31
(aka "The UN concert"(various sources from 1973 mixed by FZ))

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT the 1974-12-31 New Year's Eve concert! It's a reel of material passed by Frank Zappa to various radio stations, consisting of 1973 concerts.
OU: This is perhaps the only available source for this material in this form. What's in here is the Zappa New Year's Eve concert broadcast on WLIR-FM in Garden City, New York on December 31, 1974. This was taken off-the-air on a twin push-button Realistic reel-to-reel at 7.5ips as it happened. My friend Steve and I had tried to go from our Long Island homes into Times Square in New York City, but it just didn't happen due to the bad weather. We each bought a bottle of Beaujolais instead, returned to my room, and nearly spit up the wine laughing at this show. Parts of it are still funny enough today to split your sides.
It has to be said that what's actually in the torrent is different than what the announcer says it is, and therein lay the confusion (and possibly the different variations).

Setlist (run time 53m 07s)
Announcer Introduction
Zappa's Introduction aka "Tango Chat"(Wayne, New Jersey 1973-11-11)
Pygmy Twylyte/Dummy Up (W/Coffee, unknown date/Location)
Be-Bop Tango Excerpt (unknown date/location)
The Story of Dupree's Paradise (NYC, NY 1973-11-22, late show)
Yellow Snow Suite (Sydney, Australia 1973-06-24)
Guitar Event(Lowell, Massachusetts 1973-11-30)
Bebop Tango Contest (Waterloo, Canada 1973-11-18)
Announcer's Closing Remarks

Technical notes: The Realistic deck was notorious for engaging with the buttons not completely depressed. After the commercial break, one side wasn't pushed in properly and the sound became distorted until the problem was noticed and the button was pounded in on the fly. During this portion, the distorted side was deleted and the good side was copied over. So a part of it is in mono.
Lineage: Transfer to wav 2008-10-13 ->Sound Forge ->FLAC via TLH, level 6, sectors aligned and verified, FLAC integrity checked.
Enjoy!

Original Comments: this is a different recorder than the new recorder3 that was shared here.
recorder3 is that sony recorder>BASF master>pioneer555. i think EV used this for belgian triple.
the equipment used is unknown to me for this post. in comparing this one to recorder3. i think this one is brighter with better highs. recorder3 does sound a bit closer. you make your decision. both recorders run slow but this one runs a bit closer to correct speed.

OU: The original files had DC offset which I corrected after merging the files. It also sounded as flat as a pancake, so I applied 8dB gain & EQ to 'liven up dead samples'. The downside is that is raises the already high cymbals. The whole recording sounded like it'd already had some editing between songs & it left it sounding rather disjointed. So I did some minor edits to remove dead spots & make the transition a bit more natural sounding.
I've also tried to clean up an error in Angry's banter after 'Nive Boys' a bit. I also edited out the dj banter. Unfortunately, about 4 secs of combined intro music to 'Bad Boy For Love' & 'One Of The Boys' is lost & the drum rythm skips a beat on the 2nd of the 2 songs.
Personally, I think that's a small price to pay to get rid of DJ inanities!

Geetarz Comments:
If 1980-1981 were EC's worst years, and 1982 was sort of uneven, 1983 was the year that "EC the guitar hero" came back onto the scene.
Here we have an excellent, close-miked soundboard, perfect quality, the entire performance, and a secure rip directly from the silvers.
This show is an essential part of any EC "core collection", and recommended.
Artwork, checksums (ffp, MD5, ST5), EAC extraction logs, info file, and whole-torrent MD5 included.
Even if you have this, you may appreciate this upgrade in lineage, direct from the silvers.
As always, play it loud ... and enjoy!

Bob Marley and The Wailers: Barcelona 1980 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

Booklet
Plaza de Toros La Monumental
Barcelona, Spain
June 30, 1980

This is perhaps the best possible edition of this concert so far, from three different sources.
The Disc One is a Soundboard published before by "niteshift" in reggaetraders, and then
published in Dime (I don't remember the author, as the torrent disappeared).
Disc two is an Audience Recording, tracks 1 to 4 are an Audience Recording different from niteshif of unknown origin, but with much better sound and , tracks 5 to 10 are from niteshift. The track 11 is the Spanish TV special then, is the Angel Casas Musical Express, appearing on the show interviews with Bob Marley and people around him. And also the wonderful Soundcheck of Three Little Birds and Wake Up And Live.
*The concert At the "Plaza de Toros Monumental de Barcelona" from June 30, 1980 is a favorite of collectors, as it has one specific characteristic: the Wailers sang "Three Little Birds." Why?
In 1980 in Spain, off the echoes of "Is this love" and without "Survival" got a hit-single, a television commercial Lois jeans using the music of "Three little birds" got the biggest
promotion of Jamaica ever had in Spain. That "No importa que, más da, si se mueve tu Lois, déjalo bailar" ("No matter, who cares, if you move your Lois, let it dance") became very popular.
Therefore, what the world was the single "Zimbabwe" to "Survival" on the B side (Island WIP6597 - March 1980), in Spain included "Three Little Birds" on side B (Ariola A 101 465) .. . and a cover with the title "No importa, que más da" ("No matter, who cares") referring, I've never seen anything like it in the face B of the disc.
*Extracted from a bob-marley.es review.

Stereo AUD trade tape
Trade tape > Computer WAV > Cool Edit 2000 > TLH v2.4.1 > FLAC 8

The right channel was low on the source tape, and I tried to balance things out a bit.
Beyond that, the only thing I did on the computer was place track marks before each piece.
This FLAC fileset comes from WAVs from this dub, which only needed SBE corrections in TLH; no CD-Rs or EACs.

NOTES: It is stereo, but if you're looking for high fidelity, this ain't the one to pick.
The first 3-4mins are dodgy / heads misaligned (no adjustment to my tape would help), but improves a bit after that.
And as you see, the first 5 titles have cuts all over the place. There's a couple'a cuts early in track 6, and from then on it's largely uninterrupted save for between songs near the end.
Most of the gaps related to the cuts were left as is, because they left very small short gaps.
During the last 1/4th of the show, the gaps had long silence stretches & I cut out a total of 30sec of silence from them.
Part of Circumstances was overlapped over my source tape's sides, the sound was much less hissy on Side B.
Tho pace-wise it was a seamless edit, you can hear the hiss step down right at that edit point.
- - - -
If you can get by all the above issues, what's here is a fine show.
Alice In Blunderland is sweet, and you get a taste of Too Much Time / Clear Spot / Crazy Little Thing.
And who opens an encore with a bass solo? :) Just like, who opens a show with one, no one but El Capitan.

There's some debate as to the actual date of this performance.
Per Detlef's site, this is best dated as being 1972-10-13.
Some other references include a date of 1972-10-19 or (my tape) 1972-10-30.
Whatever the date, it's a nice capture from long long ago.
I dunno about you, but when I hear stuff this old, I am REALLY grateful that people went and recorded things like this. And I'm glad traders kept them going around long enough so I could get a copy many years later.

Todd Rundgren's Utopia: Atlanta 1973 (Pre-FM) FLAC

Retrorock front
Thursday, November 8, 1973
Fox Theater, Atlanta, GA

the band:
Todd Rundgren
Hunt Sales
Tony Sales
Dave Mason
Jean "M Frog" Yves Labat

The is from the "Retrorock" Radio Broadcast which aired in the early '80's.
The Radio Show's tag was "putting the present into perspective" so it includes the songs included here plus host Meg Griffin informing us of a little of what TR was up to at the time. Not much actual information, but the songs are fantastic.
Made from the transcript LP on a great turntable > DAT > CD (with digital editing by Sandra Winters to rid the CD of clicks and pops).
This is sourced from a Bubnick CDR, one of the few where sticking a label on it didn't warp the disc enough to ruin it.
Enjoy!

02 Don't You Ever Learn? 05:14

OU Notes on the show: This was the first show featuring Roger Powell. It's an audience recording, but was remastered beautifully. The sound is rich, full, simply outstanding.
This show comes from the incredible archive of Frank Bubnick, from whom I acquired many, many Todd shows. He was always a great guy, and my eternal thanks go to him for all the work he put into leaving the best possible sounds of Todd shows. Thanks, Frank.
According to Frank's notes, he took the songs from the original masters. They were remastered by Paul Russo. Of course, if anybody has a better version of this show (I seriously doubt it, though), I'd love to hear it. So, please upload it. AND: please, support this and all other artists by buying their official output and going to see their shows. This is what we can do to keep the music we love alive! Thanks.

Eric Clapton: Buffalo 1974 (G+/VG- Aud) FLAC

Clapton at Absolute Rock Bottom
1974-07-06-buffalo-front
Eric "Drunken" Clapton
"Singing With the King"
War Memorial Stadium - Buffalo, New York, USA - July 6, 1974
ECDR 743/744 - CD-R2 - Aud 3

Disc 1:
Going Down to Brownsville
Smile
Let it Grow
Hideaway (with Freddie King)
Have You Ever Loved a Woman
Tell the Truth
Willie and the Hand Jive
Get Ready

Disc 2:
Get Ready
Steady Rollin' Man
Little Wing
Blues Power
Presence of the Lord
Little Queenie
Crossroads

The Band:
Eric Clapton Guitar, Vocals
Jamie Oldaker Drums
Dick Sims Keyboards
Carl Radle Bass
George Terry Guitar
Yvonne Elliman Backing Vocals

Geetarz Comments: Widely reported as the worst show of the 1974 tour, in fact this may be EC's lowest point on stage - ever. Eric is massively, incoherently drunk, and unintelligable at times. As the show begins with EC's 'outroduction' of emcee "Legs" Larry Smith, a member of the crowd shouts out "Clean Up Yer Act!!!!" which really says it all.
EC begins his set with a rambling "Last Train to Brownsville", and then engages in an angry tirade: "To be serious ... one more of them, I'll tell you, and YOU'RE OUT OF HERE! One more of them silly f#cking fireworks and you are out of here! Behaviour!"
As if the audience wasn't aware of his state, after "Let it Grow", Clapton shouts "I am drunk and I am ready for f#ckin' trouble!". Then, as guest Freddy King takes the stage, "he's strapping on his guitar, moving to the guest spot ... and if you haven't heard of him ... you don't f#cking deserve him! His name is Freddy ..." at this point a member of the crowd shouts out "Wanker!", presumably directed at Eric - and probably deserved.
As the solo progresss in "Hideaway", EC simply lets his guitar feed back for bar after bar, while Freddy King solos. Then in "Have You Ever Loved a Woman", after the line 'it's a shame and a sin', EC opines "don't believe them! there's no shame, there's no sin...". Freddie King then proceeds to wipe EC off the stage with his solo. Unfortunately, it's the only high point of this show!
As "Get Ready" begins, the tape source for this CD begins to exhibit lots of wow and flutter, which comes and goes for the remainder of the recording. "Blues Power" ends with the beginning of "Presence of the Lord" which continues on Disc 2. As the band segues into "Little Queenie", EC mumbles "there it is again ... mumble mumble ... what the fuck is going on? ... well, I'm happy to get going - suits me, suits you" and then finally, in what has to be the second most bizarre and/or obscure "Little Queenie" reference from the 1974 tour (the "Martin Borman - Vote Nazi!" comment from the Pittsburgh show takes the #1 slot), EC says "Meanwhile, in Birmingham ... England, that is, not here, in Alabama .... they're making Persian carpets ... at 19,000 quid apiece ... there's only 10 Pakistanis here! They can't be bad - who am I?"
Members of The Band come out and join Eric on a disjointed performance of "Chest Fever" and then by all accounts, carry the drunken Clapton off the stage.
This show is interesting in much the same way as a gruesome car accident beside the highway - you don't really want to look, but there's a certain sick curiosity that makes you! Certainly only a recording for diehard fans.

Filler on Disc 2 is "Leon Russell With Eric Clapton / Apartment Jam 1974" as found in the EC bootography:
"Leon Russell with Eric Clapton / Apartment Jam August 1974" - Zealot - Zealot 002 - sb5
5 tracks on 1 CD. Total Time: 37:35
Unknown personnel on organ, bass and drums; however it likely includes EC (Guitar)/
Leon Russell (Piano, Guitar)/Mary Russell (Vocals)
I Found Love/Down In The Bottom/Jam/Paint It Black (sic Painted Black)/Jam

www.geetarz.org Visitor Comments:
"I was doing some research about War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo when Google took me to your site. It was a page about Eric Clapton's Buffalo concert in 1974 -- a concert where he was apparently quite drunk. The venue was listed as War Memorial Stadium when the concert was actually played at Rich Stadium. The wrong venue may be the result of Clapton's own biography, which listed War Memorial as the site of the concert. This is not a big deal. I just thought I'd write to correct it. Hope this helps. " - Anon.

An essential part of any EC collection - if only to see how bad it can get!

“Planxty, curiously no official live recordings until 2004, at that memorable concert turned into a DVD.
Reviewing history and pages relating to their discography, Andy Irvine mentions a concert recorded in 1980, which appeared in cassette format, but pirate! Rescued Andy's own words on his website:
"In August, Planxty played for a week at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin. We Were a six piece band now, HAVING added Bill Whelan on Keyboards and Nollaig Casey on fiddle. Nicky WAS still doing the sound and I recalled Each evening's performance Which WAS To Have ramifications a little later. ... Pirate double cassette 'Planxty "Live at the Olympia' stopped by injunction, pero quite a lot of copies made and sold Were in UK."
The recording is in very good quality. I must admit that this is a historical jewel, because, unlike the 2004 concert, here the voices of all members are intact. The selection may call it a "Best of ...", it covers all the albums of this remarkable collection.
Technical aspects.
I (OU) took the recording and re-edited. Removed the sound of analog tape, correction of cuts and breaks between songs. -Fran Solo

Fleetwood Mac: Los Angeles 1974 (VG- Aud) FLAC

Fleetwood Mac Shrine front
Fleetwood Mac Live at the Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles, California 1974-11-30 Complete "Heros Are Hard To Find" Show from master reel to reel AUD tapd - Rare setlist, and one of Bob Welch's last shows!
This reel had become seperated from its broken tape box some time back, and had become misplaced and forgotten. The box had become damaged sometime prior to my possession in the early 1990's, and the tape had apparently been improperly stored as a result.
If you collect music the way I do, organization is a real problem. Wait, let's talk about that for a minute: most people who DO collect music the way I do generally have a spouse or family member, who either doesn't understand and says something to you about it, or... who sometimes takes matters into their own hands and rearranges all of your carefully arranged "sh!t piles" into a clean, tidy, out of the way place... where you can't find anything anymore.
Does this sound familiar?
Mrs. Doinker is NOT like that, she's a very understanding woman. She's even asked to be quoted here: "Once in a while I get tired of being alone. Sometimes I come come and the first thing you do is go up on that dammed computer. Then, when you finally come to bed, you expect me to be bright and cheerful. But, I'm not. I'm smarter than you".
Great... just great... LOLOL!!!
But hey, anyway, as I was saying, organizing stuff is a bit of a problem around here. So, the box destoyed itself, and the reel disappeared for over two years.
The reel was located open on a shelf while trying to reorganize CDr's. A faulty transfer had been made when the tapes were first received, and I found that. From there a search went on for the reel.
No amount of tape baking will work on this tape. It's mechanically damaged and the oxide is no longer there for parts of it. What you will hear is a reconstruction that took many hours to do. Recording levels were altered many times, and one portion was reconstructed from scratch with overlays from other material within the concert due to unrecoverable damage. It still isn't perfect, but it is listenable to.
Identifying the show was another matter. The tape only says "Shrine" on it, and there was nothing else to go by. Through the kind courtesy of FMLegacy.com, the date of 1974-11-30 was given as a possibility. On this date, Fleetwood Mac opened for the Jefferson Starship. A quick search turned up the Starship reel, and the dates matched.

It's a great set, with rarely heard material:
Setlist:
Disk 1
Intro - Coming Home
The Green Manalishi
Spare Me A Little Of Your Love
Sentimental Lady
Future Games
Bermuda Triangle (over 12 mins!)
Why
Nightwatch

Disk 2
Believe Me
BlacK Magic Woman
Oh Well
Band Intro Blues - Band Intros
Rattlesnake Shake
Hypnotized

Check out the "World Turning" style drum solo during "Nightwatch"!

Personnel:
Bob Welch
Christine McVie
John McVie
Mick Fleetwood
Bobby Hunt

Bobby Hunt's tenure with the band was extremely short-lived. It is sure that he only played with the band from September through December, and that he was the second, and final keyboardist before Welch's departure. This show was recorded during a very turbulent time in the band's history, right at the end of the band's second era.
With the acquisition of Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks toward the end of the following year, greater treasures lay ahead. But at the time of this recording, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer's weird departures had dug such a black hole, that it threatened to put the group out of business forever.
Enjoy!

Mono camera audio track from Master Betacam tapes
Details: On 07Aug87, a TV crew filmed Pink Floyd rehearsing for the upcoming world tour (the tour started on 09Sep87 in Ottawa), inside a big hangar at Pearson Airport, Toronto.
The total length of these rushes filmed during the band's rehearsals is around 55 minutes.
Two different mono audio tracks were recorded by the TV cameras: one directly from the soundboard, the other being simply the audio recorded by the cameras microphones
(technically very similar to an audience recording).
The present recording comes from an audio transfer from the master Betacam videotapes. The soundboard source was used as much as possible, the exceptions being On The Turning Away, One Of These Days and Time, for which only the audience track seems to have been recorded (the worst sound quality is during Time, when the camera was filming from the right side of the stage, capturing a strange mix of sound coming from both the main speakers and the musicians monitors).
The audio was carefully mastered (levels adjustments, editing, slight EQ, and manual cleaning of some buzzes here and there). This mastering was also used for the SBD
audio track on "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason Rehearsals" DVD authored by JME from Cochon Production.
Apart from Signs Of Life, the songs are incomplete and there are cuts during some of them (the TV crew didn't film continuously). However, songs like Echoes, Learning To Fly, The Dogs Of War and Wish You Were Here, are very enjoyable because they are captured almost completely.
And the sound quality of the soundboard tracks is just fantastic!
Enjoy!

QUALITY: A+ Stereo Studio Recording

NOTES: This album was recorded in early 1976 but never released. This particular dub was made from an ANA(1) copy given to a record company employee by Beefheart himself. This same tape has been bootlegged on CDR with excessive noise reduction, but this fresh new transfer is completely free of NR. Don't be fooled by the European bootleg "Dust Sucker" which comes from a very poor quality tape, and not the "Captain's original tapes" as the liner notes claim. This copy is the real deal!
