TRANSFER/EDITING NOTES: The description of the source of this recording says it was taken from a stereo mixdown tape off the radio station master reel. If this is so, the tape used for the mixdown must have been either low quality/taped over multiple times, or the mixdown was badly eq'd, and/or the tape was badly stored before the transfer to digital took place. It is a PREFM source and it does retains the qualities of a nicely spaced stereo mix. but the overall sound is quitestill b boomy and muddy sounding. Thankfully, I was able to get rid of some of this muddiness while maintaining the qualitiy of the original recording. The quality of the original mix is a little hidden in the source recording. Even after attenuating the frequencies causing trouble, the recording is still bass heavy. Apart from readjusting the frequency spectrum of every track, quite a bit of level adjustment was made to bring up the level of a very quiet recording. The level from track to track on the source recording seems to fluctuate from time to time so I tried to match track levels as much as possible. Finally, some slight compression was used to bring out some of the drowned out elements in the mix and maintain a more balanced overall sound. Conclusively, the recording is now clear, crisper, louder and more balanced. There are some clips and pops throughout the recording that I didnt really pay much attention to. They don't hinder listening enjoyment significantly in my opinion. Here is my gift to the legions of the Kink Kingdom. Enjoy!

The Kinks: Konk Studios 1993? (Studio) FLAC

art
Kinky Rehearsals - The Club Vegas Sessions. Recorded live at The Kinks' North London Konk Studios.

Lineage: SBD -> cassette tape -> CD .wav -> .shn >encoded to FLAC (Level 6) and tested with TLH tested ok (files decodable without error).

Notes: This is from a rehearsal session prior to one of their early '90's tours. The date is not known and has been speculated as being anywhere from 1989-1994. Most sources list it as 1993, but is not really known. It is clear that it is a rehearsal, as the informal session consists of many partial songs, instrumental run-throughs, or vocals added only in bits and pieces here and there. This edited tape of the session (between song talk, misc., etc. removed) was reportedly leaked by a sound engineer or someone else that was there. The source is a CD Bootleg called 'Kinky Rehearsals". It's an interesting and unique look at the band, and they do (at least parts of ) a wide range of songs from all phases of their career, some with quite different arrangements. This is an excellent minus (ex-) quality recording.

01 - Club Vegas Intro
02 - Catch Me Now I'm Falling
03 - Dedicated Follower of Fashion
04 - I'm Not Like Everybody Else (Dave)
05 - Now and Then
06 - Victoria
07 - Hard Way
08 - I'm Not Like Everybody Else (instrumental)
09 - Come Dancing
10 - Till the End of the Day
11 - Top of the Pops
12 - Tired of Waiting
13 - Set Me Free
14 - Well Respected Man
15 - Muswell Hillbilly

18 - Sunny Afternoon

20 - David Watts
21 - "Satisfaction" jam
22 - Autumn Almanac
23 - Around the Dial
24 - Low Budget
25 - Welcome to Sleazy Town

OU comments: Mick Avory left the Kinks after the release of "word of mouth" in 1984.
the rest of the lineup is the same as heard on the studio album. Three songs from the previous album, "state of Confusion" are included in this concert, and a good collection from earlier ones. The Kinks can be bluesy and sometimes a little rockabilly country (Muswell Hillbillies era) but they are best known for rock and roll and they play a lot of that in this show. a couple of tracks are slightly cut as the taper edited a couple of times for encore breaks and the tape flip cuts in slightly, but most of the show is in the recording.

This recording should not be confused with the series labelled "The Dan Lampinski Tapes Volume XX". This recording represents part of Dan's earliest efforts to capture the live concert experience for posterity, hence the series name "Dan Lampinski - The Early Years Volume XX". Given the very consistent high quality of Dan's later work, it would have been easy to blow off these recordings and consign them to the dustbin of history, but there are quite a few captures in the series that are well worth circulating, if not for their rarity, but for the obsessive collector types (we know who we are) that want every single second of any recordings of their favourite musicians. So please, just accept these recordings for what they are, another part of the tapestry we weave when we collect and share such things.
Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.
Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.
Always remember - the more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you.

The Kinks: Croyden 1975 (FM) FLAC

ck
December 1975 Croyden.
Partial "Soap Opera" concert FM
From The Moose Track Collection

Sony TC-RX410 Cassette Deck>Alesis 9500 Masterlink (no EQ)>AIFF
File conversion done with xACT setting of 6

This is a part two to a part one I never had. You an hear a radio announcer at the end of the final track.

The story of The Moose Track collection: In the late 80’s a buddy of mine in Pennsylvania told me during my visit to the East coast about a tiny independent record store in Port Jervis, NY called Moose track Records. He thought I be interested in a box of live tapes he saw for sale in there. I went over almost immediately and sure enough there it was, a box of 72 cassettes. Some without labels. Some were generic white cassettes with a white cardboard insert. Most were TDK normal bias. Some were from the sixties, most from the seventies. Some were from BBC, most were audience recordings from the NY/east coast area. I bought them all at 50 cents a tape. Bands I knew: Devo, NY Dolls, Capt. Beefheart, Runaways,Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Led Zeppelin, Graham Parker, Rockpile, Damned. Bands I didn’t know: Ducks Deluxe, Eddie and The Hotrods, Frankie Miller. Some cool oddballs: Johnny Rotten DJ-ing at the BBC, Monty Python in a radio appearance, a 10 minute radio clip devoted to the death of Paul McCarthy.
Yes, I’ve digitized them all with no EQ. All are a bit hissy, some have drop outs, the listening qualities vary wildly and I’ll do my best to describe them and post samples.
A lot has surfaced in better qualities over the years so feel free to ask about anything I’ve mentioned, you might already have it.
ALSO! Feel free to EQ or tweak the pitch or whatever. If you can genuinely clean up any of these please do it and post it. If you do, just be clear that it’s your whatever version. I hear the potential in a lot of these recordings, but I simply don’t have the time or place to do it myself.
Over the 2010 Christmas holiday break I retransferred all the remaining cassettes. Some had deteriorated forcing me to use the DAT back-up recordings. But I have them all and I will attempt to post as many as possible. I will also be posting scans of the actual cassettes in the comments section.
-Hitwitstuff2

UPDATE: January 15, 2011:
OU: I am pretty sure I know where those tapes come from. The white cassettes are BASF bulk tapes that were sold in lots of 1,000 for commercial use. I bet those tape boxes are 2 part clear plastic. The tapes are probably all C-90's and C-60 but there were several C-45's too. The C-45 may have been black shells.
Back in the mid 70's there was a girl named Amy Friedman from Queens NY who was a known bootlegger. She made her living by selling those tapes. She had trading partners all over the world and her and a big tall guy named Arnie (who looked like Bozo the Clown) did quite a bit of NY concert taping.
All of my collection of well over 1,000 shows is on those same white tapes. I used to go halves with her when she bought the tapes and the tape boxes. I know that at one time we got black cassettes but I cannot remember which were first the black or the white shells.
Anyway I lost touch with her in the '80's and heard that she moved upstate somewhere. If those are not her personal collection then they are someone's that she sold too. But she typed those label just like the pictures you have.

FROM A COPY OF THE MASTER 5" REELS
SOURCE: Sennheiser 805 shotgun microphone > Uher 4000 7 1-2 ips 1/4" x 5" Reel - to - Reel > REVOX B77 w/Dolby (me) > SONY DTC 690 @ 16/32
RESTORATION AND TRANSFER BY MIKE MARTIN: SONY DTC-690 > AUDIGY 4 (via Toslink) > AUDACITY (conversion to 16/44.1 and editing of Dropouts) > CD Wav > Flac (Level 8)

Dropouts needed to be addressed. The recording equipment had transport issues and there would be a series of dropouts when each new reel was stared. For the first few minutes of each tape there are gaps about every second (think 5 " reel turning once at 7 1/2 ips).
chunk chunk chunk chunk chunk chunk.
There were also dropouts throughout the tape but not as many as the beginning of each reel. Similar issues affect many recordings from this source. These tapes have been relegated to storage boxes all these years because of the quality issues. The wave files have been reviewed with headphones to find the dropout gaps which were then spliced together.
Audacity is a nice wave editor and between delete and repair I removed the majority of the defects. At this time the loudest claps between the songs were removed one clap at a time. Some of the bumps and bruises of this tape can still be heard if you listen hard enough. There were hundreds.
Even knowing this stuff you would likely agree that this tape sounds great for it's time.
This concert really shows how good the KINKS were back then. Loved the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium!
Enjoy

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.
He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.
Kev & Carl June 2009

206. Welcome To Sleazy Town
207. Deutschland
208. Lola
209. Days
210. Twist And Shout

Editing notes:
* Almost all of the original FLACs had microgaps at the ends of the files; these gaps were manually removed via Nero's wave editor
* Re-tracked show by combining in Nero, splitting with CD Wave
* There was a 3-second dip in the volume in "You Really Got Me" (from the 0:52 mark to the 0:55 mark); increased the volume of this section by 5 dB with Nero
* There was a small gap in "Celluloid Heroes" right before Ray says the word "street"--I reduced the gap as best I could so that it's not as noticeable
* There were 4 instances where a piece of the recording was repeated (similar to when a vinyl record "skips"...maybe it was a bad CD rip???). I manually deleted the unneeded repititions in these 4 spots:
1. "Do It Again": removed an extra "Do it again" at end of song
2. "All Day And All Of The Night": removed an extra "relief" at end of song
3. "Scattered": removed an extra closing note at end of song
4. "Welcome To Sleazy Town": removed an extra cymbal at close of song
