Jethro Tull: Milwaukee 1972 (VG- Aud) FLAC

I was only 9 when this show came to town...
Tull Milwaukee 6-6-72 Front
MECCA Arena
Milwaukee, WI
June 6, 1972
"Don't Sh!t a Brick"

Lineage: first-gen tape -> audio CD's -> TheTooleMan (mastered May, 2004) -> FLAC
A great but incomplete (as usual) Thick as a Brick show, this one from Milwaukee. One of the better recordings of this tour, with a small, mostly undetectable patch for a tape flip at the end of "News and Weather" and beginning of part two of the title track. Thanks to Gr8BigBoy for providing the tape.
If this recording seems familiar, it's because I probably seeded it somewhere a long time ago. The FLAC files have not changed since then, but the FFP's are new.
Photos, design and layout by TheTooleMan
Please note: you have been warned that the tape is incomplete, so when it ends abruptly...
DON'T SHIT A BRICK!
TheTooleMan, June 2011

CD1
Tracks 1-15: Thick as a Brick (I'm not sure why it was done this way, but why change it now?)

CD2
Track 1: Cross-Eyed Mary
Track 2: A New Day Yesterday
Track 3: Aqualung
Track 4: Wind-up
Track 5: Locomotive Breath (well, some of it)

Jethro Tull: Anaheim 1970 (VG+ Aud Vinyl Rip) FLAC

1970 - Jethro Tull - Di, Di, My Lovely
October 19, 1970
Anaheim Convention Center
Anaheim, California

LP > Denon DJ101 Turntable > Pioneer SX-790 > Audacity 24/96(tracked and dithered to 16/44.1) Normalized/DC Offsets corrected > Flac6

OU: I found this record at Princeton Record Exchange for 10 or 12 bucks. The vinyl appears in very nice condition, I'd say VG+ conservatively, but then I do hear plenty of dusty sounds when played, so this record was probably made from one of the TMOQ versions that wasn't the best copy condition wise. I have no scanner, so I added pics of it. One (2nd from the right) of the girls looks like Pamela DeBarres of groupie fame in the late 60's early 70's in the LA area, but not positive on that. From the pics of Lady Di I am assuming this vinyl bootleg was made not long after that Lady Di boobs falling out of her dress incident. So, if anyone knows more about this bootleg, let us all know and I can update the info .txt file and attach it in a message to replace the current one.

02 - My God (10:30)

OU: I checked this setlist with one from the Ministry of Information. I never heard Carmina Burana sound like this before; I'm used to the intro that Ozzy Osbourne used to use. I'm aware that Carmina is a large work with several movements but MOI could be mistaken.
Tracks 9 & 13 are instrumentals. I'll assume that those titles are correct. MOI claims that Look Into The Sun appears right after ANDY. This is not the case. Track 17 is a solo guitar piece. Anyone know its title ? Finally, Track 21. LB = Locomotive Breath, BS = Black Sunday and DM = Dambuster's March. If you find any mistakes, post the corrections here! TIA !

I did not attend or tape this show so this will be relatively short and sweet. I acquired this tape over 15 years ago; I bought it at a record show in either Milwaukee or Chicago from a guy who dealt in audio tapes and claimed to be the taper. I paid no more than $12 US. He said he was getting out of the business so this was like a fire sale. The tape sounded pretty good to me so I grabbed it. Fast forward to June 2011. I was sitting around trying to decide what Tull to upload next when I remembered this tape so I dug it out and listened to it on headphones. Still sounded pretty good but I noticed an occasional low-frequency rumble. The tape also sounded a bit "trebly" to me (not a lot of bass response). I think that this was recorded on a high-quality machine that was old & on its way out. This sounds like it was recorded close to the stage since Ian's vocals and stage banter are very clear as is the instrumentation. Speaking of stage banter, I have a comment to make about Ian's stage banter and I'm curious to see what the rest of you long-time JT fans think.
I've been a Tull fan since 1970 but didn't get introduced to bootleg Tull until about 1986. I've listened to at least 100 different shows and have noticed that in more recent concerts, Ian's stage banter gets fairly insulting towards his band mates. In this show, Ian mocks Doane Perry's failure to have sex with some Indian waitress who was serving them in an Indian restaurant. Ian claims that Martin Barre has "no f-ng clue" as to what song they're going to play next. The line between kidding around and insulting somebody is fairly thin and I can't help but wonder if this is part of the reason that (correct me if I'm wrong) as of 2011, Ian is the only original member of JT still on stage.
Maybe I'm being hypersensitive but I'm curious as to what the rest of you think. It's as if Ian thinks he's the BIG GENIUS and the rest of the band are just LITTLE TURDS or that he's the DYNAMIC CEO and the band are just CORPORATE LACKEYS. Ya know what I mean ????
Finally, no buy, no sell, no mp3. I think you'll find that this is a really good-sounding tape and a welcome addition to any Jethro Tull fan's collection. Well, thanks for reading this and by all means, enjoy the concert!!!

Notes: JEMS master recording. This is an excellent sounding recording. This show captures Jethro Tull touring in support of their War Child album. This recording has circulated for years but this is the first time the master reels have ever been properly digitized (April 2010). This is an excellent show and performance with an early taste of an excerpt of Minstrel In The Gallery which would not be released until later in 75. Ian's in between song banter at this show is as entertaining if not more entertaining than music. Also of note this show took place on the 25th of July not the 27th as some other sources have speculated in the past.

Despite live performances which were well received, many music critics were un-impressed with Tull's A Passion Play. Ian Anderson's disagreed with the criticism but knew that a different approach was needed for the next album. Warchild was recorded at Morgan Studios in London during the spring of 1974 and was named after a Roy Harper song called Little Lady in which the term was used. The album was eventually released in October of that year, reaching number 2 on the US charts and number 14 in Britain. Many fans have been critical of the album through the years but songs from the album such as Skating Away, Back Door Angels and Sealion have been included in many set lists since they were originally recorded. Tours in Japan and Australia initially presented the new material during the fall and winter of 1974.
This seemed appropriate since a picture of Melbourne, Australia was used to produce the Warchild album cover. The year ended with a brief tour of Europe. During these tours, a small segment of unrecorded material was played as part of a medley which later became the song Minstrel in the Gallery. Apparently encouraged that Warchild was not meeting the same scathing rebuke as the prior album, Ian Anderson decided to rent a house in Montreux, Switzerland to enjoy the 1974 Christmas holiday and write his next album, Minstrel in the Gallery. A tour of Europe during April of 1975 consisted of 15 shows and had set lists which were still dominated by Warchild and older album material. The tour was briefly interrupted when Ian Anderson suffered a sprained ankle during a performance in Germany. Once on the mend, the band was back on the road to complete the tour. The Minstrel album was recorded during the next few months in Monte Carlo, Monaco before starting a summer tour. Six more shows in Europe and then on to the United States.
The second show of the North American tour was in Seattle, Washington on July 25th, 1975. There has been some confusion regarding the date of this show as many people had originally believed that it had been on July 27th. However, the taper of this show and quoted newspaper advertisements both confirm July 25th to be the correct date. The set list was similar to shows over the past 6 months. There were seven songs from the Warchild album (Warchild, Warchild suite, Ladies, Back-Door Angels, Bungle in the Jungle, Sealion and Skating Away) with the rest of the set taken from the previous albums. The short segment of the Minstrel song was still included but despite completing and recording this new album, no other parts of Minstrel were played.
In the face of all the criticism of A Passion Play, parts of that album were still included in the show.
The Critique Oblique segment was played after an excerpt of Wind-up, almost as if Anderson was hoping that no one would notice that it was Passion Play material. In a more obvious attempt to include -but not really include- Passion Play segments, The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles begins after a segment of Bungle in the Jungle but is quickly morphed into an introduction for Aqualung rather than a legitimate segment of the much-maligned album. Of course, there were other highlights of the show as well. The omnipresent flute solo was incorporated into My God and included parts from God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Bourée and Living In The Past. Jeffery Hammond-Hammond was featured as both the subject of the introduction story for Bungle in the Jungle and as a solo performer, demonstrating his skills as a juggler of unusual items. The items turned out to be black and white tennis balls that came out of the back side of a pantomime zebra which would join him on stage at that point. Given that Mr. Hammond was dressed in his usual black and white striped outfit, it must have been a spectacle to behold. Later in the show Mr. Anderson informs the audience that the song Skating Away was the only song salvaged from the 1973 recording sessions at Château d'Hérouville studios in France. The rest of the material was akin to Mr. Hammond's juggling material, by his own estimation. A string quartet was also part of the band at the time and was featured prominently during the Warchild suite.
These shows were considered a success by critics and fans alike. Chris Charlesworth of Melody Maker wrote at the time, "Jethro Tull are back once again playing the kind of music that won them their hard earned reputation as brilliant showmen and inventive instrumentalists....." We hope that you agree.

Notes from the Re-Master
This project began with a lossless FLAC copy of the torrented Master tape made available in the spring of 2010. The taper, JEMS is well known in trading groups as an avid fan who consistently obtained high quality recordings. According to the taper, the show was recorded using a Tandberg Model 11 R2R reel-to-reel deck and a Sony ECM-22P microphone. Pictures of this massive equipment (by today's standards) were included with the original release. Using this setup, only one break in the recording for a tape change was needed. This "tape flip" has been repaired and hopefully is now, unnoticeable.
The reel-to-reel tape setup was also very accurate for tape speed. Only minor speed adjustments were made during the remastering process. The recording was made in mono so one of the first tasks was to create a stereo image for the sound. The EQ was then adjusted to re-balance the sound and correct the clear excesses that were present.
Because this was a mono recording, channel balance was not an issue but dynamics were adjusted to enhance the recording. The show was then re-tracked and split for the CD format along a segment of applause so no music was interrupted.

Jethro Tull Live At The LA Forum 1972-06-23 Master AUD reel-to-reel - a true Doinker/Tooleman conspiracy with artwork by G The Cok, plus a 78 minute "Brick"... what more could you ask for?

OU: 'nuff said...
This fantastic, fabulous, unbelievable show has not really been heard until now. The master reel was recorded on a unit with weak batteries. As the show progressed, the reels slowed down. So, the pitch speeded up. Four semitones up...
It sometimes takes a lot to get me motivated to send things off. I don't know if any of you have ever had this experience: You make a trade with someone, you send, but you never receive? I had been burned so many times with false promises, that I really didn't want to part with this under any circumstances.
But, I have to tell you, The TooleMan is one helluva dude. Not only did he keep his promises about doing the work, he has graciously allowed me to seed as well. Not does that only benefit us, it benefits you as well. Hey guy! Want more?
The artwork is specially created for you as well by G The Cok, one of Dime's premier artwork makers... A very big thank you!!!!

Enjoy!
A DoinkerTape

other notes:
Remastered 9/2007 by TheTooleMan from Doinker's tape
This tape had extreme speed problems. By the end, it was running about 4 times normal. That's probably why the entire show fit on one cassette, with just a couple of small cuts. The left channel of the stereo recording was not as "bright" as the right channel.
The recording was slowed down using Sound Forge. Once pitch was fixed, the two channels were equalized to give a similar sound to both. Each channel had many variations in levels, which were ironed out. The tape had a distant sound, and the audience was loud and much more present sounding, so dynamic compression was used to bring the music "closer." Part of the beginning of Aqualung was missing, with a jump in the first verse, so the missing part was patched in from the repeat of the first verse. A small cut in "A New Day Yesterday" was also remedied with some editing.
This process took many hours, but this is a great show and well worth the invested time. The band and audience are really into the performance. It's going to be well worth the 35 year wait to hear it at the right speed.

OU comments:
the 91 set was part of Catfish Rising Promo Week of Tull in the U.S., which also included an appearance at Electric Lady Studio in NYC, one on Late Night with David Letterman TV, and another on "Rockline" radio, all including live music. WBCN played lots of Tull up to around this time so it was a fitting place to do this promo set.
Call it my Sunday Tull, actually it's Saturday but this is good soundtrack for a "spot of Sunday tea" as they say in the U.K. on Sunday or any day. this is two wbcn appearances I recorded with the "Tull Trio". the second was in 92 with the same cast of clowns.
This is the miniature Tull tour. they couldn't afford to drag Andy and Doane along for these. at some point in 91 interview they played "this is not love" from the Catfish Rising album, that song is not included in here but all the interview and live music is (this edit does not hurt the recording continuity at all, I edited it out before I'd ever heard of "torrents" or "uploads"). they talk about salmon farming and touring in Turkey and Jerusalem and some other interesting subjects. any fan of the tull will enjoy hearing this, the sound quality is pretty good, just a little static in a bit of it but most is clear and bright (but she's not there... this isn't Santana.) It's a nice set with some good tunes along with the Most Overrated Tull songs Ever I would prefer the aqualocosundaysalad anyway, to the full monty of Tull's 2 most overplayed songs ever, and you get an acoustic version of one of my favorite Catfish songs. I'll have 2 shows of that to share a bit later, but this is the catfish set in season right now.

The Port Chester Restoration project
Capitol Theatre- Port Chester, NY
Audience recordings by Ken and Judy Lee
1970-1971

Ken and Judy Lee didn't think anyone would be interested in hearing their recordings...
Between the years 1970 and 1971, Ken worked security at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, while his girlfriend Judy ran movie projections between sets. One of a few live music taping enthusiasts of the time, Ken was granted exclusive permission by club promoter Howard Stein to record the shows at the theatre for his own personal use. Judy was on hand to perform the tape flips while Ken was busy doing his job.
In 1968, the couple took Judy's brother Mark, who was nine years old to his first concert at "Cafe Wha?" in New York City. The Monkees were on tour and Jimi Hendrix was along for the ride as their opening act.
Several years later, Mark was introduced to the music of the Grateful Dead at the Nassau Coliseum on March 19th, 1973 in Uniondale, Long Island. This single event marked the beginning of a life long odyssey of musical experiences with the band that affected him most deeply. Along with his good friend, John Jay Hance, who Mark met at a Dead show in 1979, the two traveled around the United States with the band in search of the ultimate musical experience, attending over 350 shows together. The two also shared a common interest in seeing live music of a wide variety of genres, and during the 23 years that they knew each other attended more than 1000 total concerts together, until Mark's untimely death in November of 2002.
Mark knew of brother in-law Ken's recordings from the Capitol Theatre, and had a strong interest in having the shows circulated; however, being true to his word to Howard Stein, Ken kept the recordings under wraps and the tapes never saw the light of the trading domain (One noteworthy bending of this rule occurred when Ken agreed at Mark's request to circulate the late show that the Grateful Dead did on June 24th of 1970. This show is highly regarded as an all-time magical performance by the Dead during their 30 year history as a band).
It was not until John Jay, who also knew Ken Lee, and of the Port Chester tapes, ran into Ken at Mark's funeral in 2002 that the fateful discussion of having the recordings released occurred. At that time, Ken didn't think anyone would have any desire to listen to his tapes. They had been sitting up in the attic of his present home for over 20 years going through the early stages of decay.
Because such a great deal of time had elapsed since Ken made his agreement with Howard Stein, and the fact that John Jay was insisting that there was an overwhelming interest by music lovers to hear these recordings, Ken agreed to open the flood gates and the Port Chester Restoration Project began, which is ultimately a tribute to Mark Cohen's passion for live music.
By fortune and coincidence, John Jay Hance, a master at the art of recording and restoring live music himself had already developed his own method for preserving fragile, decaying audio tapes with a heating method commonly known as "baking." The process of restoring Ken's recordings presents an even greater challenge, however. The cassette shells which encase the audio tapes first have to be removed and replaced because they are too fragile to be played. This is extremely difficult, being that these cassettes were glued together during manufacturing (as opposed to the use of screws, today). The halves of the shell must be carefully removed without doing damage to the tape inside.
Once the analog tape is restored and rebuilt, it must then be then played back one time through an analog to digital converter onto a cd, which is then cleaned of hiss and other extraneous noises. Then it can be replicated and introduced to the world of music trading. For the cleanup job, John Jay enlisted the help of "Sound Forge" software guru Peter G to help make what exists from the master tapes sound just exactly perfect. Having listened to the first installment of this project, Janis Joplin and Full Tilt Boogie from August 8, 1970 several times, I can tell you that the sound is brilliant!
Keep in mind that Ken and Judy recorded nearly EVERY show at the Capitol during '70 and '71, on an estimated 300-500 cassettes (one box of cassettes is believed to be missing). While many are labeled with correct dates and the music they contain, much of what exists is still a mystery. Several gems containing long forgotten performances and musical collaborations have already surfaced. Expect some nice surprises in the years to come.
Enjoy Ken and Judy's recordings from the Capitol Theatre and appreciate the great care and quality of craftsmanship that went into their creation and is currently going into their preservation.

CD Art included
This is the artwork I made for the first transfer. The times won't match up because the tracking is a bit different. Still, I really like the front cover. I wish I could make still make cover art. Unfortunately, I've lost that ability.
Tull played 2 shows at the Fillmore on both May 4 and May 5. The 2nd show on the 5th was Clive's last show with the band. Two of the shows have been bootlegged previously as "The Fillmore East 1971" and "Clive's Last Show" and "Hymn 43".
Since I don't own either of those I can't say if this is one of them. On my tape Ian does say "Welcome to the Fillmore East." Later "It's nice to be back in Pittsburgh."
He's joking about Pittsburgh. Maybe someone who has one of those could compare times (of course a difference in tape speed and tracking could make comparisons difficult).
The Ministry of Information lists Hymn 43 as only being played on May 4. So this is most likely the 4th. Of course the MOI has been wrong before and given the passage of time, inaccurate record keeping, hazy memories, the vagaries of bootlegging, and the like, this could actually be any of those four shows. Who cares? It's a great band performing at one of their creative peaks. Enjoy.
The band is clearly energized by the new music they are playing. All but two of the songs performed here are from Aqualung, an album that very few in the audience knew, though My God had been played live for the better part of the previous year. Pretty nervy of the band. But then Tull has always challenged their audience.
This line-up lasted only 5 months from January to May 1971. Clive would be replaced in June by Barrie Barlow. Everyone, except Jeffrey, gets an extended solo (you don't get that these days). The album Aqualung had been released just a few weeks earlier and the crowd's minimal reaction to the now-classic songs is thus explained.
I'll bet that in 1971 the band never dreamed they'd be playing some of these songs 35+ years later and some of them (Aqualung, Locomotive Breath) on an almost nightly basis for the better part of those 30 years.
The quality and energy of the performance more than transcends the limitations of the sound quality (not too good) preserved by some unknown taper 35 years ago.
Check it out.

PERSONNEL:
Ian Anderson - vocals, flute, guitar
Martin Barre - electric guitar
John Evan - keyboards
Clive Bunker - drums
Jeffrey Hammond - bass

THE SOUND:
Monophonic Audience recording
Mediocre at best, it was 1971 after all.
But this is worth getting because the band is FANTASTIC!

I was going to concerts at that time and frankly, in most instances, the sound stunk. What you hear here is not much worse than if you were in the crowd that night 35 years ago. Sound systems have improved immeasurably since the early 70's. The quality and energy of the performance more than transcends the limitations of the sound quality (crummy). GIVE IT A LISTEN ANYWAY

THE LINEAGE: audience tape > tape (unknown # of generations) > FLAC 8 via xAct

Liner Notes: Another Decade for Tull….
Jethro Tull has always been thought of as a quintessential 1970’s English progressive rock band. After the successes of the late 1970’s albums “Songs from the Wood” and “Heavy Horses” Tull ended the decade with “Stormwatch” going Gold in the US. But the 1980’s would see a new direction for Ian Anderson and the rest of the gang. For the next album, “A”, released in 1980, previous band members Barrie Barlow, John Glascock, John Evans and David Palmer were replaced by Dave Pegg and Mark Craney. Eddie Jobson, having just left the band U.K. was also brought in to provide both keyboard and violin. Sadly, despite the new look and sound, the “A” album spent just 5 weeks on the charts reaching only #25 in the rankings. “Broadsword and the Beast” was next and was received well by fans. Sold out venues during the tour for that album provided encouragement but did not translate into the expected commercial success. Sales in Europe were strong but the Americans did not take to the new offering as much as previous albums. Still, Ian Anderson was pleased with the work describing “Broadsword” as one of his favorite albums. This was the first Tull album for yet another new keyboard player Peter-John Vettese who replaced Jobson after just one album. Vettese actually contributed much to the new Tull sound and helped with many of the instrumental sections of the new album.
In 1983 Ian Anderson decided to produce a solo album called “Walk into the Light”. For this album, Anderson decided to include Peter-John Vettese as the only other musician. Though not a great commercial success, the album was an opportunity for Vettese and Anderson to gain more experience working together to produce a unified sound. By 1984, Ian and Peter-John were ready to re-join Martin Barre and the rest of Tull for the next Jethro Tull album, “Under Wraps”. When asked about these two albums and the new Jethro Tull sound, Anderson had this to say, “I wanted to take the opportunity to experiment with something outside the Jethro Tull music of the time….I wanted to get away from doing what I was known for, and do something more electronic. It was the beginning of the techno age, of sequencers and samplers, and it all seemed very exciting….I was interested in the idea of combining the songs that could have been Tull songs, with a more mechanical and disciplined arrangement that would come from computer driven music. It (Walk into the Light) was in a way a direct precursor of the Tull album “Under Wraps”….It is interesting that both albums were resoundingly unsuccessful commercially…as that marked a rather more experimental period with technology…” They even used a drum machine instead of a live drummer for this new Tull album.
